Over Paradisus Rio de Oro Resort & Spa

Our favorite

"Good but no longer a five star resort"

Went with three other travelers who have been to many 3/4/5 star all inclusive resorts in different countries. We had been repeat guests at Paradisus/Sol and Pesquero. We really liked the food at the Cuban a la carte and the Friday beach Barbeque. We also had some very good service at the lobby bar, beach restaurant and a la carte's. We also enjoyed gin and tonics and Irish whisky at the lobby bar. But the entertainment, standard and variety of food and wine available was nothing like my last visit to this resort six years ago. Its really apparent that management is cutting corners and trying to sell extras such as massages, repeat guest/romantic dinners, and better wines with discount coupons of little value. They did renovate the pool, pool snack bar and beach restaurant and were working on renovating the Asian a la carte. There was also the foundation of a pier at the beach that was a bit of an eyesore. I did ask about the repeat guest dinner but they did not get back to me. When I went to purchase a better wine at a dinner only a very few wines were actually available. Overall it was OK and it still has a nice if rocky beach.

"Still unsure of our visit .."

We travelled with another couple to celebrate my husbands 40th birthday. This hotel definitely caters to an older crowd I'm sure we could count about 5 young couples while we were there. We stayed from November 25-Dec 2 unfortunately for us Castro passed the day we arrived! There was no music, no activities what so ever, we saw one show all week. Nightly entertainment consisted of someone playing a clarinet or flute, someone singing but all mellow, put you to sleep music. It led to a very depressing and almost annoying week. Everything shut down at 10:30 pm and we were back to complete silence!! Maybe we didn't get to experience everything the hotel has to offer on a normal day?!? I'm still unsure! Nothing was done for my husbands birthday, which was a little disappointing! We ate at 3 of the A la cart restaurants as the Japanese is closed for renovations. We were not impressed with any of the meals, the lasagne at the Mediterranean restaurant was disgusting! It looked pretty but not eatable! We are not picky eaters at all! Better to just eat at the buffet. We had lunch several times at the restaurant on the beach, fish & shrimp were very good. We were in a renovated room at first but then we upgraded to an ocean view which was not updated and could really use a face lift in the outdoor shower! Two days in a row our fridge was not refilled so we had to call room service to get water to drink. Overall there were many small issues that may have added up to us being so unsatisfied. I expected so much more from a 5 star hotel. I just don't see what makes it so special!!

"A Restful Vacation"

My wife and I are moderately seasoned travelers. This includes all inclusive destination resorts, cruising, and extended vacations. Our trip to Paradisus Rio de Oro had to be one of the most satisfying and relaxing vacations. After a comfortable one-hour transfer in an air-conditioned highway coach, we arrived at the Paradisus Rio de Oro Resort and Spa. What a lush and picturesque retreat. The “Check In” was brief and efficiently done by a warm and welcoming staff It was followed by an electric shuttle ride to our Luxury Junior Suite (5131). This was located close to the main pool, volleyball court, and only a short walk to the Ocean. The large suite looked out on a garden and had any amenity you could wish for. The chefs in all of the eating facilities were creative and presented the meals attractively and in an inviting fashion. The specialty restaurants went to great lengths to plate the meals attractively. All the food was delicious and fresh and in the specialty restaurants, was sized reasonably. We were in Cuba, during the passing of Fidel Castro. The resort management did their very best to make this event transparent to our vacation. The entertainment was modified to reflect the somber occasion. The staff at all of the bars and restaurants went out of their way to make the vacation “Fun”. They treated you as if you were their only guest. Likewise, the garden and house keeping staff always had a smile and a friendly “Hola”. Can’t wait for an opportunity to return. Regards.. harrjohn

"Age 22"

This a lovely hotel in a beautiful location the beach is amazing for snorkelling i feel it could do with a upgrade to replicate its 5 star rating as I've stayed on better four star hotels but on a whole an amazing place proberly the most beautiful place I've been to I'd be Shaw to visit again!

My other review appeared to be removed??? I'll keep this one brief. If you have an appreciation and a desire to eat nice quality, licaly sourced , freshly made and cooked food, then DO NOT go here. The food is awful. I can't describe how bad it is. It's pre-prepared, pre-cooked and preheated. The onside restaurants are the worst. I never finished a meal in any of them during my 2 weeks. The buffet is the best only because you can choose what you want and have someone cook it but even that becomes very repetitive and boring after 14 days. Keep in mind this resort is supposed to be 5 star luxury etc etc. I've eaten better food in MacDonald, to be honest. Today....we walked out of both the pool and beach restaurants because the food was inedible. So sad to see this resort go so badly down hill. It's a lovely place and the staff do their best but it's a million miles from what it should be and sadly lacks any quality or understanding of what a top end resort should deliver. It maintains its popularity because the standard of clientele are more focused on quantity then quality so it's suits them. There's many other faults but these pale into insignificance because the food standards make the headlines. I would advise anyone to ask themselves what they actually want from a holiday before they book here. I will never be back....even it given for free. Sadly this has been my worst holiday experience to date. .....hence why I'm writing this.
