Over Paradisus Rio de Oro Resort & Spa

Our favorite

"Paradise it is!!"

This was our third trip to the Paradisus in celebration of our 25th wedding anniversary we emailed the resort before hand and requested the same second-floor Bungalow that we had in the past and to our surprise were given th same room. We were also treated to a special dinner at the royal reserve with an anniversary cake and all . This resort is one of the best we have visited in Cuba. The food was fantastic having enjoyed lobster every night. The rooms are very clean and spacious. Having been returning guests we were also treated to a returning guest dinner which was very good. We returned home just one week prior to hurricane Irma and we hope that this beautiful resort was not affected. We are planning to return again in the winter of 2018.

"First time in Holguin"

Arrival was delayed but a very good reception. Room keys and paperwork done, cocktail and buffet was waiting for us even at these early hours. Next morning was time for discovering the site, very nice place. Beach was very nice white sand. Plenty of fish to see, even corals not too far away. Our room was cleaned everyday, perfect. the rooms is a copy of Melia Antillas Varadero. Food was very very good, not used to have this quality food in Cuba even at the buffet. Speciality restaurant were very good, steak is not there strenght but was minor. Staff were always friendly and helpful.

"Ignore the bad reviews!- RS"

Me and my partner have just returned from this paradise, having a ten night holiday 4-14th September. Before coming to this hotel, due to us booking so in advance we made sure to do our research on the hotel, including taking a look at a LOT of reviews. You will notice that the great reviews far outweigh the bad and I upon returning from this hotel, simply couldn't understand how anyone could have something bad to say about this place. (We stayed in the RS for the duration- due to Irma we ended up having to stay in main resort for three nights- I will say that I found RS to be much much better than the main resort in regards to the rooms- more notably the room size and air con.) Room- our room was absolutely beautiful and photos do not give it justice to their size- so spacious, comfy and the air con works perfect- we even had to turn it down some nights as it got too cold- it could be worse! The maid (we stayed in 8612- special shout out to our maids beautiful towel art placed on our bed everyday) Food- again due to Irma (no fault of the hotels) we only experienced the royal service restaurant, Buffett and Japanese. All food we found to be amazing especially at the Japanese and Royal Service- only problem I had with the Buffett was I like an air conditioned/cool room when I eat on holiday, and due to it being open there was none of that- the food was still lovely. Definitely recommend the show table at the Japanese!! Beach/pool were amazing- absolutely amazing. Water is not too cold but not too warm- just perfect for when you wanted a cool down. Sea is beaming with sea life so take goggles and go near the rock edge on the RS beach! Watch where you walk though, I thought I touched a rock and ended up being nipped by a crab! Hotel- the RS lobby was nothing less than breathtaking, upon entering you straight away see the view of the open turquoise ocean and I don't think I've seen anything more beautiful in my life. Upon arrival we were greeted with cool towels and a glass of champagne, never had to go through check in- just hand over your passport and all is sorted for you while you sit and cool down! Unfortunately I'm terrible at remembering names but all staff such as bar staff, waiters, butlers, receptions and cart drivers were all amazing- Cuban hospitality is like no other. Although we arrived just before Irma hit, I will not say it ruined our holiday. It was truly sad to see the gardens damaged the day after but all staffs families, homes and all guests were safe during the storm and that should be all that matters- the staff are a credit to the hotel and the clean up operation when Irma passed was amazing, I left and it looked the same as when I came. Excursion- due to Irma we only managed one which was the island paradise- which is amazing it is definitely what it says, full of wildlife, amazing beaches and amazing views, with a open bar catamaran and a stop for snorkelling- what more could we ask for? The staff never seem to make it seem a chore to help you with any request and I can say 100% I will be returning with hope to see the same faces. Thank you paradisus for everything, for making mine and my partners first holiday together something we will never forget, it was a pleasure meeting you all, until next time!

"Shortened Vacation due to Irma"

We only lost one day of our vacation due to Irma. our airline got us out 24 hours before the hurricane hit. Up until then our 6 days were fantastic. Hottest place in the Caribbean we have been. Rooms were clean, staff very friendly, food good, drinks were ok, beach fantastic, loved our walks on the long sandy beach, and snorkelling was great. Thank you PRORS, my husband and I had a great vacation, hoping everyone made out ok, our prayers are with you all.

"Five stars in the Royal Service section!"

I often travel to resorts in Cuba and other destinations, so I know that a Cuban five star is not like a five star resort elsewhere. Overall, this was a resort with beautiful grounds, plenty of lovely landscaping, excellent service, but average food. We transferred to the Royal section on our third day following a tour of the place - the beach was much nicer! If we return, it would only be for Royal Service. It is worth the upgrade. Read on for a full breakdown. Resort guests: mostly couples, 40s and up. Not a party resort, but great for lounging and catching up on reading! Room: your average junior suite is very spacious and beautifully decorated. The air-conditioning worked well, despite the 35-38C heat. Minibar was a bit lacking - sodas, water, and beer. No premium alcohol in the minibar, but you could order room service. While some rooms are showing wear and tear, the management is in the process of updating them. Royal Service rooms are about the same size, but have an outdoor shower and jacuzzi tub. Pool: tons of loungers, bali beds, and shade around the pool. Not many activities going on around the pool, but that suited us. Really beautiful landscaping around the pool and beach. Beach (main section): a fairly long beach which is nice for walks. There is another resort that shares the beach, and unfortunately their beach is nicer. The Paradisus beach has a rocky entry to the water - definitely wear water shoes! The palapas were close together as well. No waiter service on the beach, which we would expect from a five star resort. Main buffet: this was a huge let down. Repetitive food. No air-conditioning, no overhead fans, and not a breath of air. So all the food is sitting out in the open in temperatures of 30+ celsius. Members of our group became sick on two occasions, and we suspect it was due to the buffet. If you have stronger stomachs than us, you'll enjoy the omelette station at breakfast, and the flambe dessert station at dinner. Restaurants: A good selection of cuisines, however in the off-season, they usually only have one a-la-carte restaurant open per day. Food in Cuba is not the same quality or selection as elsewhere, and I would only give it four stars. The manager is aware of this and does try to make improvements. The house wine was fantastic, there's no need to use your resort vouchers to buy wine at dinner. Entertainment: the aqua-ballet is fantastic and must be seen! All other evening entertainment was mediocre. The disco was not air conditioned and just too hot to be enjoyable. Spa: We wanted to use our resort vouchers for the spa, however the spa prices were unbelievably high. 115 CUC (about 140 CDN) for a massage - I can pay less than that for a massage at a luxury spa in Toronto. In fact, the Melia Buenavista in Cayo Santa Maria, which is owned by the same company, has much more reasonable prices for spa services. Royal Service: You can ask at the front desk for a tour of the Royal Service section if you are considering an upgrade. At check in, you are given hotel vouchers, including a 400 CUC voucher for a room upgrade. Let me tell you, the mathematics they use to explain how 400 CUC only covers one night of a 130 CUC room will leave you scratching your head. Anyway. After our tour, we decided it was worth the upgrade to Royal Service even if we ended up paying about 500 CDN more per person (next time we will book straight into it!). Royal Service restaurant: excellent food. Fantastic service. I cannot say enough wonderful things about our waitresses - they were all exceptional. The staff went above and beyond. When we were sick, the chef made chicken soup just for us! The gazpacho tastes as if it were coming directly from Andalusia. Royal Service lobby bar: again, fantastic. The bartender knew our orders and had them ready as soon as she saw us coming. You can order food from the lobby bar as well, and it is delicious! Worth the wait. The lobby bar also had live music in the evenings, which was lovely. Royal Service beach: This beach was the reason we upgraded! It is gorgeous. Powdery white sand, no rocks, and some nice snorkelling! Fantastic waiter service on the beach! Julio C was quick and pleasant with bringing whatever you needed. He even brought you fresh fruit and sandwiches. This beach and this service is the reason the resort has a five star rating! Just be aware that all beaches are public beaches in Cuba, and the 3-4 local families at the beach every day were a bit noisy. They kept to themselves and were mostly well-behaved. We had a chance to speak to the General Manager of the resort, Jean-Marc, who is aware of the shortcomings of the resort and does his best to keep things running smoothly. He was very approachable and honest. It is clear that he cares about maintaining the standard of the resort, and we would return to his resort again in the future.
