"Seventh visit to PRDO."
We booked to come back to a spot we love, for our 40th anniversary and my husband's 60th birthday. Our last visit was in 2011. Upon arrival, the clerk asked us if this was our first time, Somewhere along the line, the ball was dropped as to our returning guest / anniversary/ birthday etc. The PR girl the next day was extremely helpful in trying to make this right and booked us an anniversary dinner and a returning guest dinner. She was very attentive and great at her job! ( She left on pregnancy leave shortly.) The staff, the property and the gardens are as lovely as we remember. Much appreciation to them for keeping that up. Unfortunately, we found the hotel has slipped in quality in other ways. Dress code at night was very lax and/or non existent. Quality of food in the buffet is definitely down.. ( calamari was not real, for example) no oysters on ice. ) I know people mention the birds a lot, and there are, but they also reduced the cat population which , if cared for, could help with numbers of birds.. ( spay and neuter , not remove from the property) Our frig ( stayed in superior bungalow) was sporadically stocked, even after talking to the man who did stock it. Our show table at the Japanese did not do a show at all.. the table beside us, had the complete show, with fire and guests taking turns up there. We also had to ask for plates and silverware , as the guests at the outside tables were served before us, and no one came back to the three couples waiting. Pool restaurant staff was consistently good and attentive.. We are sorry to see this, after such fond memories of our last visits.. I can see from other reviews, we are not alone in this. Hoping the corporation/management is responsive to concerns brought to them. Once again, thank you staff.. you are doing an excellent job!
"Not worth the money!!!!"
Having stayed at the melia cayo cocco in 2015 which was fabulous and had not one single complaint! My wife and I and our friends decided to book the prdo as it's part of the same melia group and the extra £1.000.00 paid We thought we would be getting a really special holiday however! This is an honest review and we are no snobs and not nit pickers, traveled with Thomas cook from Manchester no problems there, arrived at the resort to towels and a glass of fizz, check in fine and taken to our room buy way of buggy, The room was fine spacious, air con a bit weak, and a refurbished bathroom was nice. The resort itself is layed out lovely and the grounds are beautiful, the pool is lovely and big with plenty of sun beds maybe could do with a few more sun brollies though. The beach and the sea looks very picturesque but rocky not just where you see the rocks on the pictures there are all the way up the beach under the sand so use of swim shoes is advised. Snorkelling is good here. We decided the beach wasn't really for us (which isn't a complaint) so spent most of the days round the pool which was nice. Where my niggles start is the food and we aren't picky eaters far from it! Breakfast in the buffet is your normal spread for an all inclusive resort, but the food is cold maybe warm at least, Lunch through the day is either the beach restaurant or pool restaurant both serve pizza, chips, sandwiches etc However unbeknown to us we wanted to use the buffet for lunch now and then to have a bit of variety, it's open from 1pm We sat in the lobby from 1pm to 2pm waiting for it to open and it never did, however when we enquired why this was we were told it's served in the international al a carte on lunch time, no information of this anywhere, So decided to go the following day as wanting some variety, I have never seen anything like at any resorts I've been too There was on tray of chips which were stone cold, pork that was stone cold and couldn't even cut it, a few cold meats and ice cream and that's it, very poor to say the least. Dinner at the buffet was ok however you had to go to the food stations to get warm food but we managed. So eating during the day was pretty dia for a two week holiday. Came across some lovely and acomadating staff especially Danilo. tipping isn't compulsory so tip when you feel like it. The maid for our room did a top notch job the whole two weeks as did the bottle man (forgot his name) and hope the birth of your baby goes well, and the kettle will help a lot. Overall the Cuban people are lovely, but definitely not worth the extra £1000 as said above I would highly recommend the melia cayo cocco, to say they are part of the same melia group it's disappointing that the prdo is surposed to be the best and in my opinion it's not
"royal service at the paradisus rio de oro"
We have just returned from the Paradisus Rio de Oro, where we stayed in the royal service for 2 weeks in room. We had a fantastic holiday. The room and air conditioning were fantastic. The room was cleaned daily to a very high standard. The food was excellent. The staff were all professional and friendly and polite. The staff in the Helechos restaurant were wonderful, nothing was too much trouble and their English was amazing. The royal service front desk staff Taimi, Edgar, liubel and julio were so helpful, friendly and professional. They made us feel very welcome. The bell boys were friendly and polite. The bar staff in the royal service Maricelis, Olga, Maylin and Arnaldo were so professional, polite and definately gave us the royal service. The areas around the royal service and the toilets were kept immaculate at all times by the cleaners. The butlers Norge, Hector, Yunior and Rolando were helpful and very professional at all times. And finally a big thank you to Lina and Raul for their professionalism and making our holiday a wonderful experience, and making it really feel like home. We are already planning our holiday for next year and we will definately be staying at the Paradisus Rio de Oro in the royal service. Thank you to everyone from Kumud and Roberto.
I tried to honestly review this resort previously but I guess the folks at Trip Advisor decided it was too truthful. I guess I couldn't contain my anger about my experience when I got back to Canada. Its been several months and I have had time to get over it so let me try again. I researched this place to death and based on those reviews I booked. Sadly the resort did not live up to its advertisement. The facility itself is truly lovely and well kept so hats off to the hardworking staff who take care of it. My room was nice although the air con was weak and the bathroom flooded every time we showered causing my wife to fall on the very slippery floor. It seems the drainage is inadequate so shower water bubbles up through the floor drain and floods. Luckily she was not hurt. Apparently this room had been recently remodeled. Nice work...... The towel game is alive and well here despite the minuscule sign at the beach counselling otherwise. Other resorts I have visited can control this but apparently not here according to the general manager I complained to about it. To those who play the game, thank you for ruining it for everyone else who paid to be there too. Incredibly selfish and arrogant. Enough about that. As for the food, all the a la carte restaurants are very good most notably the Japanese restaurant. Book your reservations online before you arrive to avoid the lineup and inevitable disappointment. They tell you that you can only go once but if you go right to the door and tip them you are in. I ate Japanese 3 times. The main buffet was simply too repetitive to be enjoyable (Breakfast, lunch and dinner). It was basically the same thing night after night, day after day. Coupled with the extremely inefficient layout, getting a hot meal was virtually impossible (A la cartes were much better) I have been going to Cuba since the 80's and I even had occasion to work in Cuba for the military and the Parque Central Hotel in Havana when it was being constructed. My experience over the years has been how great the workers are at these resorts i.e. waiters etc It seems the workers at this resort only look after the repeat guests and service at the lobby bar is poor. I was very surprised by the poor service and apathy that I came up against every day whether I was changing currency or trying to get a drink. We decided to try a few days on the "Royal Service" side in what I was told was the most sought after room at the resort. This was perhaps the most disappointing part of our stay. The room had a spectacular view but the air con was so noisy that my wife and I could not sleep and spent half the night wandering around the resort. Maintenance was informed and nothing was ever done The plug in the bath tub was broken so the much hyped "Candle lit bath" was a no-go. The so-called "private concierge" is reached by calling the operator. This is the same number used for room service. They may or may not respond so I am not sure what the benefit is here. The dreaded towel game is played here too but it is worse here because there are fewer chairs. If you are not out in the middle of the night laying claim to the handful of loungers you are out of luck. The restaurant here was just so-so and included a mangy and sickly cat wandering between the tables on the patio begging for food. Poor thing. Service around the pool was bad. Front desk staff were very rude whenever you asked a question. They always acted like you were wasting their time. This is "Royal Service"? I felt ripped off. I have read the responses from the resort general manager to those who complain on Trip Advisor that we should give them a chance to make it right. It took 3 days to get the managers attention and his response was "Hey, what can I do?" My advice, don't waste your time looking for them to "make it right" They won't.I have been going to Cuba almost every year since 1985 and this was my first disappointment. Sadly, I use to love Cuba and the people but this trip turned me totally off the place. Not just the resort, but the country. Even those who had been coming for years said the resort has been in decline ever since the so called "Royal Service" side was built. The funny thing is, the best service we had throughout our entire stay was that provided by Sunwing and their site reps. They were extremely helpful and felt bad for our experience and confided that they too have seen a major decline in customer satisfaction at this resort. No fault on the part of Sunwing. The airport lounge was also good service so I would recommend getting the private airport lounge for your departure. Hopefully my review will help others make better choices as to where to stay in Cuba. My advice? Avoid this resort.
"Stay in Royal Service"
Having travelled to Cuba on many occasions this was our first time at this hotel We stayed in the royal service section of the hotel from 29th June -11th July celebrating our wedding anniversary. Travelling with TC we were collected from the airport in a minibus with one other couple. On arrival first impressions were good , lovely looking hotel and friendly attentive staff. Our room 8824 had a wonderful view of the sea and was spacious immaculately clean and beautifully cool. We found the whole royal service are to be 5* Staff were helpful our Butlers Augustus, Hector and Yunior were very helpful and insured our every need was met. We ate in all of the Al a cates in the main hotel and found the food a very good standard for Cuba with the exception of the Mediterranean which wasn’t to our liking. The RS restaurant was superb and the Waitresses a Somalia polite and attentive. We did use the spa on two occasions and the massages were nice and the beach there very beautiful. We had no problem with mosquitos apart from when dining at the Cuban restaurant so if you eat there do make sure you use some repellent. I would happily recommend this hotel to anyone but I would personally say if you want true 5 * you need to be in RS section the main hotel is very similar to Playa Pesquero hotel which Thomas cook rate as a 4*. Thank you PRDO RS for an amazing holiday and we hope to see you again next year
