Over Paradisus Rio de Oro Resort & Spa

Our favorite

"Lovely hotel, amazing people!! "

We had a great holiday. The hotel is clean, well kept and the food is good. What makes this hotel is the beautiful staff. And we shall be returning. The beach is gorgeous, pool clean but a little cold for me. The sea is just perfect. Had a great time fishing, snorkelling, scuba diving was all inclusive in the price of the holiday. Orlando looked after us so well on every excursion. A big Thank you to Delia at the lobby bar for your attentive care, Luis at the beach bar for the laughs and mojitos. And John in the Cuban restaurant We can’t name all the staff but they really are what makes this hotel a place we will forever remember and return soon. Our Cuban family! The hotel could do with a few touch ups but this is cuba We read the negative reviews and have to disagree apart from the food being a little below our normal standards in 5* hotels across the world. But taking into consideration that in Cuba they can not always have access to certain things it’s completely understandable and not once warranted a complaint. Can’t wait to come back. Thank you all for making our holiday one that will always be in our hearts.

"Very nice inclusive resort ... and the food is good!"

Our room was fantastic! And the shower! Amazing. It was cleaned to perfection every day. The buffet was good, lots of selection and freshly cooked seafood, and an excellent breakfast offering. Two of the restaurants were good, one not so much. The Mediterranean offered one good meal and three lobster dinners that were sooooo overcooked. Terrible. Only thing wrong with our whole stay. The beach is clean and the water perfect. The pig roast on the beach - terrific! Best meal. Entertainment was good but got a bit repetitive. Fun though. Lots of great rum and good service. Definitely will go back. No kids - liked that!

"Wonderful Cuban Hotel"

Every member of staff went out of their way to be helpful and always with a smile. The buffet had something for everyone. Speciality restaurants were excellent, pre booking was essential. Our rooms were cleaned every day to a very good standard and towels were also changed daily. The junior suite was very spacious and the extra large double bed was soooo comfortable and pillows too ( I slept better than at home ). The gardeners worked very hard to keep the grounds tidy and with pretty colourful shrubs. The entertainment each evening was mostly Cuban singing and dancing and was a good standard. Some mornings there would be a pianist in the lobby after breakfast, sometimes accompanied by a couple of waiters who sang opera excellently. There is a nice walk along the beach, which is white sand. The sea could be a bit rough and as is normal in this part of the world rocky in parts. Quite good for scuba diving and small catamarans. The hotel although kept very clean was in need of a slight tidy up. We chose this part of Cuba as it was quieter but it would have been better for us if there had been a nice walk to an out of the way typically Cuban bar.

"Still our favourite resort"

We keep coming back to the Paradisus Royal Service year after year. We love the landscape, the view(s), the beach, etc, Above all, the wonderful staff and the good food makes us want to return. The resort is getting older and some upgrades/repairs are needed. We saw some improvements since our last visit in April 2017 but some broken equipment (e.g. steam bath at the spa and treadmill in the gym) have not yet been fixed since last year. We will be back at the Paradisus Royal Service but we may consider other resorts in the future if this trend continues.

"Give it a few days......."

First trip to Cuba so wasn’t sure what to expect. I needed a few days to adjust to the quiet slow pace. Sunny weather, nice beach, a large pool that was never busy. No chair wars, plenty of lounge chairs and cabanas at pool. This is a very quiet resort. Check in was fast and easy. You won’t get a lot of information, no welcome newsletter, dining times, or map of resort. You just have to ask questions or poke around the resort. They have signs posted as well as activities listed outside the buffet. The orientation seemed a waste of time. They just try selling you excursions. A walking tour of the resort would have been better. You just have to go with the flow.....activities can be added or deleted based on participation. If they see a lot of people around the pool, they might do an impromptu salsa lesson for example. Water ballet performers might show up in afternoon for a practice or tease for a nightly show. I didn’t see many utilizing the free water sports but I guess it was a little choppy. They make fresh omelettes or eggs at the buffet for breakfast. For lunch, there is pizza or hot dog/ burger fries at grill or you can go to lunch buffet. It doesn’t open until 1:00 pm. They serve fresh pasta, grilled fish, chicken, etc. You won’t find their sauces or syrups labeled, just trial and error. Ice cream sundaes good but I could never find a teaspoon in the buffet, just large soup spoons. Our favorite restaurant was the Japanese show table. We had an outstanding confident 23 year old chef named Jorge. He was funny and very entertaining while cooking a great meal. I had a pork and vegetable fried dumpling for appetizer. The main course you pick from beef, chicken, shrimp or vegetables. He stir fries in front of you with rice and vegetables. I had fried ice cream for dessert which was very good. El Patio was our second favorite. I had slow roasted pork and mashed potatoes. They brought us a coconut anniversary cake. The grounds keepers work hard everyday and it shows. We didn’t have luck with our mixed drinks for some reason. Maybe language barrier. We’d get drinks we didn’t order. The pina colada and strawberry daiquiri seemed to have right ingredients but weren’t blended or icy. After a few days in, we started drinking wine. Used the 24 hour room service once for club sandwich, fruit plate, and pastry plate which were good. Don’t count on room service on last day if you have early flight before buffet opens at 7:30 am. We were told they were too busy to guarantee. The grill by the pool serves light breakfast depending where your room location is and how far you want to walk. We had a standard room, 2nd floor, king size bed, balcony. We were close to lobby and theatre so could hear entertainment til around 11:00 pm but this didn’t bother us. There is USB plug in to charge cell phones on the side of clock radio if anyone is looking for it. Remember to make dinner reservations online before you go or as soon as you get there. The rule is you can only visit each ala cart once and the rest of your evening meals would be at buffet. Pablo was very accommodating and if they aren’t busy, they might be able to squeeze you in if you find a favorite. All evening meals are dress code including buffet so men are to have long pants and closed toe shoes. Now I saw the waters tested with men wearing jeans and sneakers which met the criteria and no one was ever questioned. The Holguín Airport was a nightmare coming home. They only had 2 wickets open when 3 coach buses dumped off their passengers. Same for security, just 2 lines for hundreds of people. But we survived. It was a nice getaway but can’t say we’d be returning. Don’t think Cuba as a destination is for us.
