"For Thomas Cook customers"
Please be aware that the hotel is unfortunately closing the pool from June for a refurbishment but Thomas Cook seem not to be passing this information onto it’s customers. The compensation that they are offering their customers is a pittance.
"WOW..... We loved it.... And will be back "
This is a long but probably the most honest review I think you’ll read on here..... The one question you’ll want to know is if we stayed in Royal Service? The answer to that is no.... and we won’t be when we return either because the main hotel was just beautiful and perfect. And one thing I will point out is that a lot of the Royal Service guests were at the main pool anyway so that goes to show how lovely it is. We arrived to the most welcoming service and couldn’t have asked for more before being shown to our room.... our room was beautiful with an outdoor shower and a sea view.... just stunning. Yes ok..... the bathroom was a little outdated but who cares or even uses the bathroom when you’ve got the luxury of an outdoor shower!! Overall absolutely beautiful and kept so lovely and clean too. The grounds are amazing and kept beautiful, the gardeners work so hard day in day out.... one lovely guy came and gave us a fresh coconut that’d just fallen from the tree... which brings me to the staff...... we absolutely loved everyone but there are a few people that we feel need a mention in this review.... Odalys..... just a beautiful lady who made our special day so perfect and is so kind.... if you are celebrating anything special this lady will take care of everything.... we became really fond of her. Thank you so much for everything and we love you 💕 Lorenzo! Well..... he is the nicest bartender you’ll meet and works at the pool bar.... he is amazing and will make you any drink you request! Even moose light without vodka!! again just a lovely guy...... who remembers you and makes you feel so welcome. Alien.... he was so friendly and gave some fantastic advice when it came to rum and cigars to take home.... he also works at the pool bar and in the main bar at night with the very special rums on offer! Great guy... The staff are one of the main reason we’re looking to return next year or if not the year after..... but the whole place is lovely..... The beach is amazing and sea is just beautifully clear and a joy to be in.... snorkelling is a must as there’s some fantastic fish to be seen and the hog roast is a great lunch by the beach too... one not to miss. Yes there are a few rocks but nothing to make a fuss of and no one we saw wore beach shoes to go in the water! Absolutely stunning beach. Ok..... food..... well I don’t know how anyone can be negative about the food!!! The main buffet restaurant was again perfect..... there is SO much variety for breakfast, lunch and dinner..... you can choose from freshly cooked meats, fish, omelet, pasta etc.... the list goes on..... we had lunch at the beach bar or on the beach but on two occasions did eat at the restaurant and most evenings too and it’s just fantastic..... I recommend the lovely little lady on the salad bar (didn’t catch her name) but so sweet and will remember your order quickly for the next day. Everyone in the restaurants work so hard to keep you all happy and that’s exactly what they do.... we can only praise the good and staff in there.... AND not one upset tummy in two weeks so that says it all.... we ate smoked salmon and salads etc.... both felt really well the whole time. Entertainment.... we absolutely loved it..... we loved the opera and loved the dancers and every evening they provided everyone with a fantastic show.... how anyone can fault them is beyond me!!!! Great entertainment throughout. A bit of advice for anyone travelling here anytime soon..... We went on a day out called ‘the green path’ definitely one we’d recommend as it was the most amazing day out ever..... if you do book this and get the Jeep’s then our advice would be to ask for Dan as he made our day out one we will never forget, thank you so much to him too..... Also we’d recommend the Japanese restaurant as that was an amazing experience and again delicious food. Just ignore any negative reviews on this hotel and look forward to paradise in Cuba because that’s exactly what you’ll be heading to and you’ll be treated so well.... they are the MOST welcoming people we have met and we also met the manager himself who couldn’t have been more welcoming..... the whole staff team deserve a praise for making our time so wonderful and trust me.... anyone thinking of going should book and go because you won’t be disappointed. JUST BEAUTIFUL 💕
"Gorgeous Guardalavaca @ Paradisus Rio de Oro"
This was our 5th visit to Cuba, but our first in Guardalavaca. Absolutely stunning area. Having been to Cayo Santa Maria, Cayo Coco, and Varadaro, we were looking forward to views of the mountains and the sea. We upgraded to royal service ocean view. Worth the upgrade. When we arrived at the airport we had a private bus (in that the royal service guests (6 in total when we arrived) had their own bus. On the way home we had a van. We usually book royal service, but this was a first in regards to transportation. The service was impeccable. Everyone who worked there, whether royal service or not, went over and above. We were greeted by our butler on the royal service area and checked in. A very calm process. Really! We sat on the couch and he brought paper work to us. The concierge told us that our room was at the further end of the ocean views and therefore the view may not be the best ( we upgraded a week before we left, so understood) however, there would be guests checking out the following day and we could choose which room we would prefer. We really appreciated the gesture and took him up on the offer. Rooms: The view from the end suite (9311) was beautiful, but yes, the ocean view was somewhat obscured by the trees. The following afternoon we moved to the first suite (8511) of the ocean views. Stunning. The suites are amazing! Comfortable king size bed facing the ocean. HUGE bathroom, double sinks set apart. Awesome outdoor shower (one of our favourite amenities found in some Melia/Paradisus resorts) and jacuzzi tub. The walk in closets are large. I especially appreciated the huge mirror in the closet. Naturally with Royal Service you get the robes and slippers. The bed was comfortable. The only issue we had was with crickets. They were massive and loud! A few got into our room which only annoyed us because they were noisy when we wanted to sleep. However, my husband found the little crack they were getting in from and plugged it up. Also the staff sprayed the room during the week. This was a minor issue that was resolved quickly. Royal side in general: you get a real feel of Zen here. It is quiet with many spots to just stop, sit and take it all in. The Royal service area is on top of the hill. If you have mobility issues, no worries because you can ask the concierge to call for a driver to take you to and from the main area. On the times we did request a driver (usually because we were running late for a dinner reservation) he arrived within a few minutes. Often times while walking either up or down the hill, the driver would stop and ask us if we wanted a lift. We enjoyed the walk though because we saw various lizards and even crabs crossing one evening. Big ones! Plus there are some beautiful view points that look out over the ocean. Customer Service: I can't say enough about the staff. Wendy Valiente! You rock!! She handled all my queries from a week before we left, literally until the day before we had to sadly leave. She checked in with me 3x via face book messenger to see how we were enjoying our stay, offered advice and support if needed. We never did because everything was so perfect. Butlers were great. We didn't see much of Junior, but only because we didn't require much when he was on duty. We saw more of and appreciated the amazing service from Renaldo. Suggestion: make sure your butler reserves dinners for you the day you arrive. Junior didn't, and so the following day, Renaldo had to scramble for reservations for the week, some of which were a bit later than we would have liked. We appreciated the two special jacuzzi baths set up for us, one we paid for the other complimentary. Both with floating petals and oils and champagne on ice. Another shout out to Lina (I hope I have it right) who always greeted us with a smile. I appreciated her professionalism and kindness when I thought my sandals had been left behind in the first room we stayed in. When we had the room checked, they were not there. They questioned the maid who said she didn't see them we she cleaned the room. The next thing you know, they had security involved. I never suggested they were stolen, only that I may have left them there and as we have many times in the past left behind items for staff to take. When I triple checked my bags, the sandals were found and I was thoroughly embarrassed. But the staff were fantastic and just laughed it off. Obviously they take lost items very seriously. To be clear, I have NEVER been worried about stealing in any of the resorts I have stayed in (always Melia or Paradisus) and consider Cuba to be one of the safest places ever. I only mention this to show the level of service you will receive at Paradisus. Food: On the royal side there is one restaurant for royal guests. It is excellent. We tried the buffet on the non royal side a few times, but were disappointed in the breakfast selection. As its been reported in other reviews, the food isn't as hot as one might come to expect. There isn't a great selection (at least for breakfast). However, I must commend the food and beverage manager. The first time we tried the buffet for breakfast, I asked for a cappuccino but was told by the server, I would have to go to the lobby bar to get it. I did. The following day, I went to the bar and ordered it first. The manager approached me and said he noticed I brought the cappuccino in. He was very emphatic that I should NOT have to do that and that if I wanted it, the server would get it. I really appreciated this. We only did lunch in the buffet once and it was ok. A fairly good selection. We didn't do dinner there. The royal service restaurant had the best breakfasts by far. You could take fresh fruit, cheeses etc from the mini buffet and order al a carte. They made the most delicious lobster eggs benedict. I had it 3x! Lunch and Dinner was also good. Although usually we missed lunch because we spent most days on the beach (more about that later). Not a problem though, we often ordered room service for lunch, eating on the terrace while enjoying the gorgeous sea view, watching falcons soar overhead. Dinner selections didn't change, so we only ate at the royal service restaurant twice. Both times, excellent. The other al a cartes were really good. Although the Japanese was average, the show was fun at the teppanyaki table. Spa: Having traveled extensively to many resorts around the world, I have to say that the spa at Paradisus is one of the best I have ever been to.The service was fabulous The view from the rooms amazing, and the exclusive spa beach..to die for! Service on the beach there as well. One gentleman came down to ask us if we wanted a drink or sandwich. We took him up on both. Although, I believe it is only if you have a massage or other service booked. The spa also has a salt water pool and a lovely relaxing room that although enclosed, over looks the spa area. I highly recommend using the spa and their services. I wish I could remember the names of the wonderful women who did the couples massages, but we enjoyed them so much we went back a few days later. Royal Service Beach: I can't speak to the main beach because we stuck to the royal service side. It is small but we never had trouble getting a lounger. On days we arrived a bit late, we couldn't always get an umbrella, but it wasn't a huge concern. Yes, people leave towels on the loungers when they go for lunch, but the beach was never crowded (seriously, we never saw more than 6 couples at a time during March break). The sand is white, the water turquoise. Snorkeling wasn't the greatest off the beach. I did try a few times from the spa beach and was more successful, however, be sure to take water shoes or use flippers to over the coral reef. It is quite high up in some spots. Excursions: We didn't do too much this time around, although as always, we do the catamaran for a day of snorkeling. Unfortunately this was the worst experience we have had. Not because of the catamaran operators or tour guides, but because we traveled an hour from the resort to go to the pier in Holguin, were on the catamaran for another hour (beautiful views with the mountains and sea) only to land up right back in front of our resort (just further out). There were no fish except where the tour guides chummed the water. We proceeded to another site, again in front of a different resort and although this time, the guides said we would see more fish if we ventured out further, it wasn't the case. I did see a bit more but not as much as I had hoped. However, the best part of what would have otherwise been a sub par excursion was the lobster lunch we enjoyed at an eco park. Great food, wonderful music by the chef and others. If you don't eat seafood, chicken was an option. Please keep in mind this excursion is no fault of the resort. I was more upset with West jet because the agent didn't inform us of the the route the catamaran would take. I didn't have to pay 150.00 CUC to snorkel in an area I could snorkel at for free. The 2nd excursion we took was into Guardalavaca to the market. The market was small and pretty much the same as every other market in Cuba. No worries though, I found what I wanted. The highlight was the last minute decision to take a horse and buggy! If you can, do this. It was a great experience. Luis was wonderful (ask for him) and the resort is familiar with him. It was 25 CUC for the trip, but I'm not sure how much others may charge. He was so informative during our ride and offered much information about the different plantations in the area. You can stay as long as you want, just let him know when to pick you back up. He showed us good places to eat and see. However, since it was so hot that day, we spent 1/2 hour at the market and went back to the resort. Luis offered to take us to the town the following day for fresh fruit etc, but we didn't think we could fit it into our day. We are so sorry we declined. Next time for sure! Main area: The lobby and surrounding areas of the main area are really beautiful. There was so much detail in the decor and architecture. Every time we looked around we saw something we hadn't noticed before. One day, we took a walk around the main resort and were happy to see some vendors set up. Even is the lobby by the bar/entertainment area we saw some beautiful crafts for sale. However it was our last night and we didn't have enough cash on us. Exchange: we found it slightly better to exchange funds with the bank in the main resort rather than the Royal area desk. Not for convenience, way easier to exchange in Royal service, but the exchange rate was slightly lower at the resort bank. You can also exchange funds in Guardalavaca. Don't forget to take your passport to do so. Overall the rate difference was negligible. Paradisus Rio de Oro is a fantastic resort. It is beautiful and clean. The service is A+. We went for rest and relaxation and that is exactly what we got. Days spent on the beach; evenings watching the shows while enjoying a spanish coffee. Thank you Paradisus for a memorable, fantastic vacation. We will definitely be returning.
"Good value for the price paid"
Just returned from a week at this resort. We booked junior suite ( base category) building 12. I have a mixed review but would definitely return at the right price point. Overall the resort is not a 5 star (Cuba standards), probably for the royal service which is beautiful for sure but certainly not 5 star for junior suite or junior suite deluxe. Good 4 star. As well, I think the resort really focuses on the up sell....that base junior suite room is acceptable and the maid keeps it very clean but in no way is it 5 star...once you arrive the concierge really pushed hard to up sell....they will show you the royal suite rooms for an extra 140 CUC a day or a junior suite deluxe for 70 cuc. Thankfully we stayed in our base room and were pleased with the value that we got for the price paid. Pros: excellent price for junior suite. We paid $1350 for a week, Great food-best in Cuba (and we have visited quite a few resorts in Cuba). The pool bar is excellent. Great choice for the day. El patio and the Mediterranean are excellent. Buffet is great as well..good grill and pasta section. Great pool area and beach. Staff are excellent- they appreciate a tip but give Great service without it. Our mad was excellent. Pool bar staff were awesome as well as he staff at the el patio and Mediterranean restaurant. Room service - great. Cons: Main resort is in need of tender loving care. Rooms need upgrading, new paint, curtains, beds. Our bed was terrible...we were offered a topper and thankfully that worked or we would have had to move buildings. Landscape and building: need care, new paint, lawn needs tending, flowers and trees need landscaping. At other resort you always see people cutting the lawn, tending to flowers, painting but you rarely seen that at this resort when we were there. That said there are some areas that showed improvement but not many. Entertainment was terrible....too much Opera, Cuban dancing, singers for my taste. The aqua show was excellent and the day we left, a rock show was planned. I was very disappointed. The resort really needs to work on their entertainment to be interesting to a variety of audiences. Beverages: most bartenders did not know how to mix a drink....the resort should pay attention to this and many drinks were left or returned. Cuban restaurant: terrible . So many people just get up and leave in the middle of the meal. The upsell Mini bar in fridge- not well stocked...had to use room service three times to bring pop and beer that was not put in fridge. At the right price point, I would recommend the resort. Food is really good, excellent for Cuba. If you do not mind the fact that the resort is older, and needs work then you will be fine and of course.
"Still our favorite resort."
This was our fifth visit to this resort and hopefully not our last. As other reviewers have noted, it is the wonderful staff members that make this such a pleasant place to visit. I would like to mention our favourites but that would be too long a list. The grounds were even nicer than in previous visits. Everything was lush and green because of all the rain in January. Our room was kept spotless and the fridge topped up with drinks daily. The food was very good at all of the eating locations although there was a shortage of potatoes and orange juice for a week. Had no issues with the new menus – still lots of selection. We didn’t see many of the stage shows but certainly enjoyed the many varied musical entertainers at the lobby, pool and beach restaurant. There was excellent service and drinks at all of the bars. We can’t wait to return again next year.
