Over Paradisus Rio de Oro Resort & Spa

Our favorite

"P.D.R.O. 2017"

   24-04-2017
Sorry about the length of this review as I am long winded and long of tooth. Well we are back from our April trip to P.D.R.O. . . . We booked this as our second trip this winter there so that when we came back it was supposed to be summer in Canada. This was our sixth time staying at Paradisus Rio de Oro since starting in 2013. Now the good stuff: All the staff will usually go out of their way to do everything in there power to make your stay enjoyable. Of special note are people from the lobby, the chamber maids, the beach, the lobby bar, the cigar shop, the store, and the spa, and the a la cartes, all did what they could to make the stay a great vacation. The facilities even though somewhat dated as the resort is eighteen years old or so are generally in good repair and there is always some renovations/maintenance going on somewhere. This year we stayed in the ocean view junior suite which was an upgrade from the usual junior suites that we stay in but with the view, small yard and patio and outdoor shower we have become lovers of buildings 28 and 30. The tall gentleman that cooks the fish at dinner makes the perca (I think I got it right) to die for, salt, pepper butter and garlic make it turn out better than any fish I have ever had even our northern walleye. We haven’t been to other countries so we have not seen what it is like else where but P.D.R.O. and Guardavalaca is a better location than Varadero was for us with better walking/ hiking and not as busy or touristy. And the people make you feel like you are back at home away from home. Now the not so good: Sunwing. On our March trip the Sunwing rep at the airport at the door of the terminal said bus number three, well bus number three driver said he doesn’t go to our resort. Back to the Sunwing rep and get the four digit number of the bus which now has the Sunwing sign and the number three showing, now there are two number three buses and one has a Sunwing sign. The four digit number and the Sunwing sign are a dead give away even for this tired traveller. Thank God they sell beer in the café, but poor communication by the Sunwing rep and the driver for not having the sign up. And as to Sunwing I am leaning towards calling it Sardine airlines as I have developed a hate on for the 737-800 even in Elite Plus seating. The six hours of cramped space is absolute torture, flying was a luxury years ago can we not have some seating on the plane for those of us that want to pay extra for that would be roomy and comfortable?? But the cabin crew are what saves this airline; they are such nice helpful people that work in very difficult circumstances The resort: On the second trip the room was not ready on arrival late in the afternoon. Not a big deal but it would have been nice to freshen up in our room but the lobby bar is a good place to wait. They could use more cleaning staff to ease the workload of the chamber maids. Coffee machine in room was slow so when I was going past the front desk I said so and they said that they all are. The next morning I called room service for a jug of coffee to get me going but after over an hour I was ready to go for breakfast and still no coffee, so I called to cancel it and they had no record of me calling and said it was because of shift change!! Buffet: The service poor and slow at times, tables not being fully reset after some else sat there or right off the bat. Not to often did they ask if we wanted water, coffee or wine. And at the end the menu other than the main meat or fish was getting repetitive. The coffee bar service in the mornings at the lobby is very friendly but slow they could use a couple more helpers there. The suite had wonderful windows to bad it did not have and screens to keep the cats and critters out and let the wonderful night air in. And the side window blinds were a nice roll up style but behind the blind was a couple pieces of vinyl for privacy that must have been an afterthought and looked terrible and cheap. All in all the resorts location is wonderful, most of the staff are as well, but it seems that cost cutting is rating the place down. Rating the resort would be like rating a stay at a loved relative’s home. Five stars – no but a four would be fair to say in terms of a Cuban resort. Would we come back well of course we will. Will it be twice again in a winter well maybe not both times here but twice to Cuba of course.

"Paradises for snorkeling and diving"

   23-04-2017
Just love this place. Clean rooms, good food in buffet and al la carte, even free wines are pretty good. When we were there, Mr. Castro passed away. So they cancelled big shows but kept small bands playing. The only problem was many people smoking cigars in public places. Many activities organized by the entertain team. We had a nice hiking to the nearby hills. If you snorkel, you would love this place. There are dense coral right near the beach, and you could swim a couple of hundred yards, a huge area full of corals. In addition, the resorts offer FREE SCUBA diving. Can't beat the deal.

"Relaxation and New Friends..."

   23-04-2017
We have been to Cuba several times. This Hotel was the best in all aspects. The room was spacious. It was attractive and linens were nice. The bed was the most comfortable of all the beds in Cuba to date. No issues at all. The rooms in the main section are all "garden view". However, this was not an issue and the serenity offered by the gardens was actually a welcome change. Lots of song birds to wake up to and there was a great little garden area that was actually their own tree nursery. I especially enjoyed sitting on my balcony at night if there was still music. They set the grounds up like a garden area with paths and benches. Nice touch. The resort had a small boutique hotel feel, but with all the amenities. We were easily able to make 4 reservations for A la cartes. Our least favourite was Cuban, still good but not our favourite. We loved the effort made by Manny our "Japanese" chef. What a lovely young man. The food was very good in the Japanese. The meal in the Mediterranean was very good, and we thought that would be the best but then we went to El Patio and it was even better. The difference here than other Cuban resorts is the specialty resteraunts actually serve a completely different meal selection, very high end. Nice effort was made in serving. Wine and drink was always offered and staff were attentive. No request was too much. Lately at other Cuban resorts the servers and staff always seemed to be avoiding eye contact. Not here. They all went out of their way to greet you and offer you services. From the front desk staff who had exceptional English and took a few minutes with every guest to explain all, to the bar tenders who were very professional and always made the extra effort to add in a straw or a slice of lime. The bank was open when we arrived, quick service. We were hours early, but had a room available. We were only a bldg from main lobby, which meant it was a bit of a walk to beach, but great pathways to walk on. We even had some staff tell us that we did not need to tip them! Never had that happen before. The staff are genuinely happy. They enjoy being together and laughing. They greet each other each am with kisses on the cheek and a hug. They quickly greet returning guests they recognize in the same warm fashion. This genuinely pleasant staff spills over onto the guests. This comes directly from management creating a relaxed atmosphere. The buffet was very good. Lots of selection. I do wish they allowed self service for coffee/tea. We started to go to the lobby lobby bar and have a beautiful, artisitc cappacino prior to breakfast, so in the end it was a great way to start our day. The breakfast ladies would recognize you and warmly greet you the next day. The beach was the biggest drawback for me. Directly in front of the hotel the beach has large areas of a shale kind of rock/coral. It is impossible to enter there really. You do need to walk about 200-300 feet up the beach to get into the water safely. . My husband didn't mind it as he snorkels. He saw a lot of great fish. However, I will say that there are people that go there 3 times a year. I asked one elderly lady why she goes every year. She said she has a business. Only has one week off and she knows that her vacation will always be A1. No surprises. No disappointments. She feels safe and comfortable. I think many liked that aspect of it. Plus it has a feeling of being cared for and people are very welcoming. The beach itself was beautiful to sit and we never had a problem getting seating under shade, no matter if it was 08:00 or 11:00. Oh I must mention the music. Phenomenal. I love that the resort stayed Cuban. Lovely guitar music, violin, traditional singing, dance music at times in evening for guests. Not over whelming. Just perfect. No hokey shows. I can see why so many do return. Great job by management.

"paradisus rio de oro"

fantastic experience. rooms were great and very close to the pool and beaches. staff were amazing at taking care of everything, nicest people ever. food was far better than expected. a visit to the spa is a must for anyone contemplating it. 7 days was great but next time we will book 10. cant wait to go back.

"Our anniversary chill out resort"

   22-04-2017
We have stayed here several times in the past combining it with stays in Havana. Still one of the best places we have ever been for chilling and to relax. The staff are excellent the gardens also excellent. The pool bar restaurant food and the staff who work there cannot be faulted. If anything has changed it is the entertainment mostly during the day, for some reason archery and shooting are no longer on so if you do not do exercises in the water or do water volley ball forget it. Don't let that you put you off going it is just something we use to enjoy when we came. We were here to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary and finally managed to get the wife out snorkeling which she really enjoyed to the degree could not get her out again. The room we stayed in was looking a little tired and in need of redecorating but still plenty of room and only really used it to sleep and shower in anyway. The question is would we go back again ? the answer - No hesitation look forward to it.
