"Good place with tourist friendly staff"
The hotel has nice rooms with amazing views to the lake. The staff was courteous and tourist friendly. The thai restaurant was excellent with live thai performances. Spa was expensive compared to pattaya and Phuket. Breakfast was decent with minimal veg options. The shuttle to night market was good and safe.
"Faded glory in good location"
We have always said that the Royal Orchid Sheraton was our hotel in Bangkok. We have been many times, and always stay here. Why? Because the hotel's decor was very traditional in the rooms, the staff were always pleasant, and it had sentimental value to us. When we stayed here recently, it seemed that things were not as they once were. The rooms, once full of Thai character, have been turned into the "standard western hotel room" - bland, unassuming, standardised, cheap, blah. They could have been anywhere in the world. The staff seemed a little snippy, and pressured, and were always trying to upsell you into something which I really find annoying. If I wanted to spend an extra $200 to have a better room with a choice of two breakfast spots I would have spent it in the first place when making my initial booking. However, there are many good points: It is very close to the wharf, which makes getting on the ferries easy and travelling up to Wat Arun, Wat Po etc is very easy (read: chaotic, but easy); very close to River City shopping (the antiques shops are out of this world); the pools are lovely as is the spa (there are two - one in a garden setting with a swim up bar, and the other more a decked pool right on the river); the views are good of the river (even though there's construction going on across the way - and you look straight into it); and the Thai restaurant (Tara Thong) is superb. But it just lacked something - a shine had been taken off. So overall, just ok - I wish I could say it was great, but the low quality of the bland rooms does it a disservice (especially for the price one pays). Final word: people come to Thailand to have an experience of Thai culture... why not have it in the room too? Is it too much to ask to have the rooms in a Thai style?
"One of the best Sheratons around"
Beautiful location on the Chao Phraya River in a bustling neighborhood. Make sure to get rooms on non smoking floors as the smell can be overwhelming. Nearly all rooms have beautiful views. The breakfast food is great and the Italian restaurant is your best choice for the evening as the other restaurants are overpriced by Thai standards.
This hotel is really Pefrect, and it is really good and worth that you go there cause of breakfast and see sighting and kind people also perfect rooms , result is , you can close your eyes and go to this hotel .
"Generally excellent staff let down by seemingly uncommitted management"
I have been staying at this hotel for many years and with their refurbished rooms and excellent club lounge it provides a very comfortable base for visiting Bangkok.Generally the staff are excellent particularly the admirable Nimit who has been an outstanding and helpful mainstay for years. The club lounge is one of the best in Bangkok. Apart from providing exceptionally beautiful views of the river and the city beyond, food and drink are supplied in abundance with great variety and more than a casual nod to vegetarians, The one area where the usually high standards of service are notably lacking is the terrace pool where the staff are lackadaisical, apparently unsupervised and lazy. No one seems to care too much whether or not guests have towels and there is no attempt whatsoever to arrange the towels and ensure guests are comfortably seated. This is in marked contrast to the standards of pool side service provided in other hotels. I fell over on a part of the terrace adjacent to the pool and when I pointed out to the staff how dangerous it was to ;leave something akin to a skid-pad between the pool and the toilets I was met with total indifference. I subsequently reported the incident to another member of staff who was extremely concerned and made a report but I never received any follow up from the management or any enquiry as to whether I suffered any lasting ill effects. Managers can be seen wandering around the hotel from time to time but do not make a point of speaking to as many guests as they can, as occurs in such hotels as the Sheraton Grand Sukhumvit where general manager Richard Chapman makes a point of doing a round of the guests every evening. Notwithstanding this lacuna the management are lucky to have other senior staff members who do show an interest in looking after the guests.
