"May 2018 Diving Vacation"

   19-05-2018
First class resort. Great rooms, great views, great beach, great dive shop, great dive boat operations! Have been diving Bonaire on and off for more than 30 years. Harbour Village seems to be the only purpose built vacation resort on the island. My only negative is the on-site restaurant, La Balandra. Spotty food, service, chef.

"The BEST resort on Bonaire!"

   16-05-2018
I honestly do not know where to start! Everything at this resort was far and away better than anywhere else we've stayed on Bonaire since we've been coming to this island since 2000. Let me start with the exclusivity. A very welcoming staff greets you at the gate. Once they have met you and know that you are a guest, they always recognize you and greet you when they see you. If you are NOT a guest, sorry, but there is no way to get in! Bonaire is a generally safe island, but this extra measure made us feel especially secure during our stay. For example, we could go to the beach (across a walkway from our room) and not have a worry in the world about leaving our door unlocked. The beach! Ah, the beach. The only private beach on Bonaire. Only guests of Harbour Village are allowed to use it, so it is never crowded and always pristine. I included a couple pics for reference. The sun sets over the water there also, which looked beautiful from our back patio, the beach, or the restaurant! We enjoyed the restaurant, but that might be our only gripe. There is just one restaurant on the premises. It was never difficult to get a reservation or table, but the hours were a little limited for our taste. I think breakfast service stopped at 10:30 am or so. One day we went to the gym in the morning and by the time we arrived at the restaurant breakfast had ended. They initially offered us some "light fare" items, but after hearing us debate what to order the bartender came over and said that she checked with the kitchen and they re-opened their kitchen and we could order whatever we wanted from the full breakfast menu! That caliber of service is unusual to find not just in Bonaire, but anywhere in the Caribbean! Our room was unbelievable (it's hard to go wrong with beachfront)! It was spacious and included a little mini kitchenette area with a fridge, microwave, and sink. This came in handy when we hosted a few friends for a little cocktail party with snacks and drinks that we picked up in town. And I already gushed about the back patio and ocean views... Lastly, we found every staff member there to be friendly and polite. We met the GM more than once and she even remembered us each time we would run into her. One afternoon we asked our housekeeper if there was a sharper knife in the room than what we found (to cut some of the snacks we bought) and she said there was not, but then went out on her own to the restaurant and brought back a sharper one (without us even asking)! Touches like those can transform a good vacation into a GREAT one! In closing, my wife and I can't wait to stay there again next year when we go back for our annual trip. It was our first time staying at the Harbour, but it will be hard to stay anywhere else now that we've been spoiled there!

"Disappointing!"

   14-05-2018
I’m not one to write long reviews, but I feel obligated to share my experience after reading all of the wonderful reviews of this place. My husband and I decided to come to Bonaire for our honeymoon. The Harbour Village seemed to be the nicest hotel on the island, so we decided to book there. For starters, the hotel transportation that was supposed to be arranged from the airport was not there upon our arrival. We stood around for 10-15 minutes waiting, but no one ever came. We also called the hotel a few times, but no one answered the phone. We ended up taking a taxi to the hotel and when we arrived at reception, the front desk agent said that the transportation was there at the airport, we just didn’t see him. Ironically, we looked all over the place. One would think that they might have had a sign with our name on it at arrivals? Also, we thought we had a rental car confirmed through the reservation manager by email confirmations, but when we checked with the front desk, one had not been made. This would have been okay, but the entire island was sold out of rental cars that week. Imagine how that would have ruined our honeymoon plans to bomb around for various shore dives. Luckily, we were resourceful and found another guest who had a rental car they were going to return and worked out a deal with them. We had an ocean view suite, and it was very spacious, but pretty dated. The bed was very uncomfortable. My husband and I woke up every morning with back pain and we are relatively young. Also, it seems that each room has its own water heater, so after 10 minutes in the shower, we would run out of hot water. As newlyweds, we solved this problem by just showering together, which seemed like the obvious solution. 😊 Let’s move on to the service, shall we? Oh. My. God. Outside of the blonde male manger of the restaurant, the entire staff was a complete disaster. We understand that folks on an island operate on island time, but this was to the next level. Each morning at breakfast, we would arrive and we felt like we were inconveniencing the staff to serve us. We always had to cover our plates with napkins after finishing to keep the birds away from our uncleared plates. We also had to walk up to the front to close out our check every morning. We booked the romance package, which included a private dinner on the beach, couple’s massage, bottle of champagne and hammock lounge. The bottle of champagne included was Moet White Star, which was a pleasant surprise. We booked our dinner for a Monday night and upon arrival, the manager told us that he did not have a booking for us. He did act quickly with the staff to set up another table on the beach, but there was a wait. I overheard him tell the next couple that arrived the same thing and the lady lost it on him. I ended up chatting with the couple later in the evening and they said that they have stayed at Harbour Village several times before due to their great service, but something seemed to be completely off on this visit for them. They said the service had also been extremely bad for them the entire week. We also booked those massages that were included in our package for Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 and 4:00. We had to book separately, as they have only one therapist on site. We arrived back at the hotel at 2:00 from diving to get showered before our treatments only to be informed by the dive shop that our massages had been cancelled due to the therapist calling in sick. We immediately called the front desk to ask them if they could find someone else. The agent told my husband that they would have to call us back. We literally sat in our room next to the phone for 30 minutes, when we would have much rather have been sitting out on the beach. After a half hour, my husband called back and asked for an update. The agent said that they had tried to call us back several times, but there was no answer. He explained to her that we had been sitting by the phone the whole time and asked her to hang up and call us back to see if there was something wrong with our phone. She called right back and the phone rang. Eventually, the found another therapist. She didn’t speak English, so it was impossible to tell her that her massage felt like dying butterflies were dancing on our backs, but at least they found someone. It was just a bit frustrating that we had to ask them to find an alternate solution, instead of being proactive. The folks at the dive shop were the only redeeming quality of this place. Both dive masters were super friendly and fun to talk to. However, we had a couple of issues there, too. Full concierge dive service is what was advertised and promised, but there was one day we had to leave at 7:30am for a boat dive with another company on the other side of the island. We had asked if we could grab tanks the night prior so we could go on afternoon shore dives after our two morning boat dives. They didn’t want to give us the tanks the night prior, but promised to have them at the front when we left the next day. It turns out that someone did not send them until 8:00am the next day, so we had to come all the way back for them, which added 45 minutes of unscheduled travel time. In the grand scheme of things, this wasn’t such a big deal, just a bit inconvenient. Outside of that, our experience with the dive shop was really, really good. Overall, for what we paid, we were both extremely disappointed. If we come back to Bonaire, we definitely would not stay at Harbour Village again.

"Vacation to Paradise"

   07-05-2018
This was our fifth trip to Harbour Village and it was the very best. We had a very comfortable Primere Suite overlooking the beach with a large bedroom, good size living room, huge bathroom and small, very adequate kitchen. Everyone was so accommodating and helpful to us. I have sensitivities to fragrances and the housekeeping staff cleaned our room so well that I was totally comfortable. I also have food sensitivities and Luis, the chef, made delicious food for us all fifteen nights we were there. Luis was so kind and always wanted to please us with each meal. I did the Discovery dives since I am not a certified diver and Ken, the dive master who taught me and dived with me, was so helpful and kind. He was very intentional about showing me the most interesting fish and corals. We also snorkeled every day and always saw many fish and many varied species of fish right off the beach. Americo was very helpful to us when we needed anything and Melissa, the General Manager always followed up on whatever we needed. Lying under the palm trees, listening to the exotic birds, and listening to the waves instead of loud music(like at some resorts) was so relaxing that I could stay there forever.

"Best Beach and Accommodations on Bonaire"

   07-05-2018
The property is very well kept! From the front gate to the check in process the staff are friendly and helpful. The dive shop staff are fun, helpful and informative. The beach is beautiful and the sunsets are amazing. This was our second visit. The Restaurant gets a bad rating from us. The staff ignores you. Twice we sat at the bar for 10 minuets and no one even acknowledged we were there. Many restaurant staff walked by. The only food staff that seemed to put effort in customer service were the young girls and one lady. The food is terrible. Bar snacks are not fresh but made from pre-made frozen yuk. Dinner was not good either. Breakfast is OK. Great place to stay eat somewhere else.
