"Best Hotel in all of Cayo Coco"

My husband and I traveled here with two friends in January. From the moment we arrived to the hotel until our departure, the experience was spectacular. Something to note, this is not a "party" resort. Most guests are couples, 50+ and on the quiet side... which is in our opinion, the perfect resort! The resort is smaller with 250 Rooms, which is perfect because most areas are less than a 5 minute walk from your room. The villas are 2 storeys are rooms are spacious and well appointed. We opted for a regular room rather than the lagoon rooms, as the regular ones are closer to the beach. Our room in building faced the ocean. Although many buildings face the ocean directly, they may not all have a view of the ocean, due to the vegetation in between. The vegetation does provide excellent protection from the ocean winds and we were very happy viewing the birds in the trees from our balcony and listening to the waves crash on the beach. Pool: This resort has ONE very large pool. It is quiet and perfect for cooling off and playing volleyball. If you want a swim-up bar or a DJ blasing music all day, this resort is not for you. We do not like swim-up bars or loud music while we relax. Beach: The beach is fresh, wide and long with plenty of loungers and shady spots. The beach bar and restaurant are close by and the food is wonderful. Activities: There is no shortage of activities and the staff make it enjoyable for all to participate, As someone who does not usually participate, I found myself excited to engage in the games and activities with the other guests. The animation crew has a special gift for keeping everyone in a great mood! The energy and joy they bring to their job actually makes the other guests more pleasant to be around. At other resorts, I've encountered so many miserable guests. At the Melia, you will see all around you that everyone seems to be smiling and very friendly. I attribute this to the staff's dedication to making everyone's stay wonderful. Special thanks to the animation team at the pool and beach - I don't remember all their names (Lea, Ahizarys, Ani, Eduardo, Yandy, Carlos and everyone else) however every single one of them made you feel like a friend. Pedro in the Sport Club is one of our favourites, especially for the Archery and Rifle shooting activities. He makes it so much fun and builds camaraderie among all guests. I appreciate that he is very concerned about safety and takes the time to teach correct use of the equipment and makes sure the equipment is well cared for. The billiard bar was so much fun and we preferred it over the disco. The disco was never busy, but this resort is mostly 50+ couples and we were not bothered in the least. Food - Food is great, especially the snack bar! We preferred the International Restaurant over any others. If you order the lobster, it is enormous and we wished we shared it! Our favourite servers were Diosvany, Orlando, Dago, Delmis, and Osvaldo. Our favourite bartender was Yamil at the beach bar and all the staff at the snack bar. In fact, we did not meet a single staff member who did not make us feel like friends. We see why most guests return again and again - we can't wait to return!

"Would go again"

First trip to Cuba. The room was dated but clean and the staff did a good job of keeping it clean. The food choices were numerous but nothing stood out as exceptional ( this is Cuba remember). The food must have been OK because I gained 10 pounds in one week. The drinks were fine, lots of choices. The staff were all very helpful and polite. The beach was beautiful. Special thanks to Dago for the great friendly service in the buffet.

"Fantastic again, but....."

had another great stay at this hotel and a big thank you to Gypsy for arranging our room request again. this was our 4th visit to this hotel and the weather was hot although very windy so not so many people on the beach. the great thing about this place is the staff new and old because they are so helpful and always smiling and will always have a laugh with you. the beach has been widened and is much better, the pool looked ok and was always cleaned by the pool guy and no need to get up early for sun beds as these were always available. met lots of returning guests which were great to see again (Colin and Jackie, Ginge and Sue, Paul and Elizabeth from UK and Rod and Holly from Canada thanks for making it a great holiday) now just a few niggles to note. there was no Cava for the whole 2 weeks and we always liked to have a glass or 2 at 12.30 and 4.30 up in the lobby bar so this was a big disappointment however management did arrange for a few bottles to be sent to our room so thank you for that. also it has to be the first time that we noted plastic cups around the pool area which had not been collected and there were 3 cups that had been there for at least 3 days. some of the soap and toilet roll dispensers were either hanging off the wall or did not work but lobby bar toilets always good. the Italian restaurant food was not good at all but previous years was ok. the biggest niggle is the price for January 2018 and I think we will struggle to visit again it seems like standards have slipped yet prices have gone up??? anyway lets see if Thomas Cook can offer us a deal as we will return if the price is right

"Another great vacation at the Melia Cayo Coco"

My wife and I travelled to the Melia Cayo Coco from 2017 01 05 to 2017 01 12. This was our third time staying at this resort, the last time being 2012. The two biggest changes were the new widen beach with a lot more Palapas which had eliminated the dreaded towel game. The second change was adding a new bar with staff in the garden area off the main lobby. The checkin was very smooth and quick with the reception upgrading us to the Lagoon Superior room which we had paid for the previous two visits. This was very nice and greatly appreciated. Although there have been many new employees since our last visit, the service was still exceptional and always with a smiling face. The staff who were there on our previous visits did remember us and warmly greeted us. These type of things make this place such a great place to return to!! We ate at all of the restaurants with all but the Italian being good to very good. The Italian restaurant was honestly terrible but that can't necessarily be faulted by the staff as this is Cuba and some food items are hard to obtain. The only other complaint which is also very minor was the draft cervezas at the buffet, Italian and sports bars was flat most times, the other bars were fine. They also ran out of Cristal and coke for the room fridges. They substituted Cristal with Buccanerro, sorry but Cristal is SOOO much better but what can you do. These minor issues did not ruin our trip or our view of this resort at all. I dove with the onsite dive centre, Blue Diving, which I had done on our previous two visits. They were excellent as usual, Marin, also taught my wife to dive with the intro to diving course and took care of her which she greatly appreciated. "El" Nino and the others took 10 of us on a full day excursion by bus to Trinidad for two shore reef wall dives after the weather turned bad and stopped the local diving. Nino and the guys did an exceptional job, the made this a personal tour stopping at a local restaurant on the way for coffee, the two dives, local cooked lunch overlooking the Caribbean Sea, a walking tour of Trinidad then sunset on top of the mountain just outside of the city overlooking the sea and mountain range. And of course, way too much rum and cervezas on the bus ride back to the resort. They even cleaned all of our gear and left it drying in their centre. If you get the chance to do this excursion, do it!! These guys are amazing and treat you like family, this is not the typical excursion, very personal which we loved. Thanks again to all of the dive staff!! In closing, my wife and I had a great vacation and will definitely be back....

"Wonderful holiday, fantastic staff"

My mom and I stayed at Melia Cayo Coco from Jan. 10 - 17, 2017. This was my third time staying at this resort (fifth time in Cayo Coco, sixth in Cuba) and my mom's second time. It is a very short drive from the airport. The check-in process is always a bit slow, but not terrible, and they bring you welcome drinks. We arrived around 1 p.m. and our room was ready. The rooms are clean and spacious but are outdated and could use a refresh, especially the bathroom. Unfortunately, it was very windy the whole week, so we couldn't go to the beach, and the red flag was up, so there was no swimming in the ocean. Instead, we went to the pool every day. The beach is normally wonderful, though—well-maintained, sandy. They even widened the beach since our last time there. The pool and pool area are very nice and well-maintained. The staff at the pool bar/snack bar are hard-working and friendly. Yamira (short dark hair) was very sweet and mixed good drinks. Yamil is always kind and friendly. Joel and others come around the pool area to take your drink orders and are lovely. The animation/activities team really make the experience special. Special shoutouts to Lea, Ani, Maité, and Olexis! They are AMAZING. There are always activities you can choose to take part in by the pool: water aerobics, dancing lessons, painting, etc. The lobby bar is lovely and has a great atmosphere. Leonisdel and Jovel always take great care of us and are very kind and friendly. We ate at the buffet for all meals and really appreciated the friendly service from Arisleidy on the patio and from Tony, Dago, and Yunior inside. We really appreciate the great salad bar, which includes beans, rice, veggies, potatoes, and lots of options for dressing. The pasta bar is great too, but they should use separate ladles for the different kinds of sauces to make sure they don't contaminate each other. We would have liked to see more vegan options as well as gluten-free options. The "Vegetarian Corner" at lunch and dinner is poorly situated behind the raw meat and fish grilling station, and you have to get past the people waiting in line at the grill to access the vegetarian food. Also, you cannot trust that the vegetarian food is actually vegetarian—more than once I found pieces of meat or fish in a dish there, which is not okay. The front desk staff were good and were able to deal with multiple requests at a time. Andres was very helpful when we wanted to find out if the pharmacy at the market carried a product we needed. He called to find out that they had it and then called us a cab to take us there. Overall, this resort is wonderful, the staff is outstanding, and we will certainly be back.
