"Really friendly staff and beautiful hotel couldn't do enough for you"

My and my wife went on the 26th September for our honeymoon.we enjoyed it that much the day after returning we booked for next year. The staff were so friendly and couldn't do enough for you. The pools were cleaned daily and there was a massive selection of food

"Has Seen Better Days..."

We just returned from a week at Sol Rio de Luna y Mares. We stayed Oct 14th to the 21st. This was our second visit; having previously stayed in March 2013. I’ll start by saying that we’ve been to Cuba 17 times since 2008. Being a resort-bum and not much of an explorer, I’m very aware of what to expect in terms of accomodation, food, etc.. On our first visit 3 years ago, I rated this hotel a 4- “very good”. Although even looking a little worn back then, we found that the facilities and service were much better on our first stay. I can now only call this place “average”- and it even struggles to be in some areas. My opinion- the reviews that rate this property as an excellent hotel mainly come from repeat guests that are in love with the staff and their “second home”. The reality is, it’s not what it once was. I wasn’t a happy Cuba-camper the night we arrived. It was late, maybe I was a little crabby from my travels. We took a cab from the airport and I guess the driver wasn’t aware that the Mares reception was completely closed. So, we pulled up there first and got a first hand look at the renos going on. This is a total construction zone- not a minor, non-disruptive upgrading as I had thought before we left. We obviously could not check in there (or even get out of the car) so, off to the Luna lobby we went. Things looked a lot better over there of course. We were a group of six. My husband and I, being repeat guests emailed the hotel ahead of time; trying to get an oceanview upgrade. We figured since it was low season, and the majority of the hotel is oceanview anyway, it was worth a shot. All of our friends were assigned Luna rooms in block 8. We were given Mares 3004. I was so excited! Well, as it turns out… we were on the 3rd floor but facing out the front of the building, towards the dolphinarium. The room was super old and the AC just barely worked. My friends in Luna had much nicer, newer looking rooms (and partial oceanview from the top floor!) I cannot for the life of me, figure out why they thought they had given us an upgrade. We considered asking for a change but honestly, it just seemed so far away to move. We called maintenance about the AC but it didn’t improve much. They were back the next day when our toilet quit flushing (fixed). Anyway, we just stuck it out. With the Mares lobby under construction, they've kept the Mares bar open, as the 24 hour one. Yes, there's a bar but it's surrounded by a temporary wall and has neon lighting. It's so uninviting. It feels industrial... definitely no old fashioned Cuban ambience up in there. Needless to say we didn't visit often. The daytime and early evening service was fine.. but after 11pm, Good Lord. The single bartender would take one order at a time and fill it, before going to the next person. Example: "One Spanish coffee please". Time lapse of 2 mins while he makes it. Then, "three Spanish coffees please". You get the idea. Wouldn't it make sense to fill up the beer orders while the coffee brews? I really wanted to climb the bar and serve myself a Bucanero. (Sorry, no Cristal). If you're up past 11pm, you're much better off at the Luna snack bar or the beach disco. It's actually a good time down there! Lots of people dancing, and fast service. Verrry loud music though! We pulled up some chairs and stuck our feet in the sand farther away so we could hear each other. Our main spot was the Luna lobby bar. We were always sad when it closed. The staff there is super friendly and service is reasonably quick. We spent our mornings there having coffee, our late afternoons having boozy coffees and happy hours before dinner. They usually remembered our orders and had no trouble chilling our duty free wine for us. (I always find wine in Cuba terrible, for some reason particularly in Holguin). They're a good bunch at that bar. There's also the cigar bar that's now upstairs from the Italian. It's nice inside and has a rooftop terrace but no music at all? I don't know why. We brought our own to sit outside. We did other things besides hang in bars. We ate! I don't have a whole lot to say about the food. It was perfectly average. The buffet has a decent selection. We were allowed only two a la cartes. We had Mediterranean and French. As everyone agrees, the French is the better one. We went into Holguin city and had dinner at a place called Los Almendros. The food was incredible. I'll have to write a whole separate review for that restaurant. It ruined us for the rest of the week. I'd pay good money for that meal at home. Lunch was typical lunch stuff at the Luna snack bar - usually pizza, or the Pinta on the beach. The one thing that just doesn't change and won't disappoint is that amazing beach. We spent as much time there as possible! We were there following some crazy weather so the waves were big and there was quite a lot of seaweed, but they worked very hard to clean it up. The beach chair guys are really fast (I always felt bad asking for six chairs!) and work their butts off out there. We visited both pools, both are nice. The Luna is very quiet, good for reading or siesta time. Mares has a swimup bar and entertainment. So, I'll get to my bottom line here. The views are still spectacular. It's still a very tropical setting. The grounds are very nice and well kept. The buildings are really looking run down now. Yes, they're working on it and I'm sure the Mares side will be beautiful when it's done. Don't be mistaken though, right now it's definitely a construction zone. It's a lot of little things that make a hotel memorable or forgettable. The little thing list is long (not enough towels, forgot our water AGAIN..no toilet paper, random sewage smells.. I could go on). No huge deal breakers. A good time was had by all, despite the annoyances. Sorry SRLM, I don't think a 3rd visit is in our future. We debated whether we should have spent the extra money and went to Playa Pesquero, and we were sorry we didn't. It's worth the price difference.

"Great Family Holiday"

This is a very good standard of hotel for Cuba and I have travelled to many parts of Cuba and stayed in Casa's. This hotel was value for money booked via Thomas Cook. I travelled with my parents and also my 9 yr old daughter. We stayed in the Luna section of the Hotel in Block 8 which was the furthest from Luna reception however it was only 5 mins walk to the Mares side. Our hotel room on the ground floor was very clean with adequate furniture and storage and a firm bed - no issues there. The benefit of our block was it was very quiet at night and it also has path down to the beach for easy access. The beach is fantastic, quiet with natural shade from trees and has free water sports included (pedalos, canoes, small boats and catamorans). The swimming with dolphins is within 5 mins walk to the right of the Mares reception as you look out and if you go at 1.30pm you can miss the tours and get a smaller group with the Dolphins for a cheaper price. On the left of the Hotel Luna reception is the stables for horse riding. The hotel also has a doctor and spa on site which is very handy. My daughter enjoyed the water sports and also the new pool table and the new table tennis in the lobby bar which had been refurbished. Yes there is some refurbishment going on however at the beach or the Luna area you cant hear this so we were not affected by the work. Kids club is available and my daughter did use it. The hotel has a new head chef and we felt the standard of food was good but was also improving during our stay. We visited the French restaurant which was first class. Weather was much hotter and humid than I expected and we occasionally had some short spells of rain. All of the staff were friendly and work very hard to make your stay enjoyable. I would go back to this hotel.

"Will definitely be back"

"Great holls"

Myself and partner have just had a holiday here and I must say it's been one of the most fantastic holidays we have had I cannot understand why people sit and complain about the hotel you should read the reviews and if it's not for you don't go hotel room was very nice cleaned everyday nothing was too much trouble food was absolutely fabulous it catered for everybody anybody could say they didn't have anything to eat is beyond me staff at the bar were really friendly don't really know what else I can say myself and Darrell had a brilliant time and yes we will go back again reception staff really friendly nothing too much trouble
