"Nice beach!!! Hotel in desperate need of major renovations!!!"

   18-06-2018
Good place for someone, who enjoy sea and beach. Hotel must be renovated ASAP!!!! Had an episode of falling ceiling in the bathroom on my head. Also our front door was not operated well- sometimes it was impossible to close.Food is ok.

"Questions about a few changes"

   13-06-2018
We had a fabulous time last year at this resort . We wish to return this july but we are a little worried about some of the reviews. Will the restaurants be open every night? Can we get sparkling wine anywhere in resort as part of the package since it is the only type I enjoyed last time. Is there a schedule when the bands play at the restaurants ? We were lucky to hear them a few times but never knew when or where they would show up . Thankyou in advance

"First time in Holguin"

   13-06-2018
Boy boyfriend and I (early 50s) were at the resort the last week of June (2018) and had a pretty good time. We wanted a nice beach and great weather and that is exactly what we got. This was our first time in Holguin (we have been to Cayo Santa Maria once and to Varadero many times...still our favorite in Cuba,) and we really enjoyed the green, tropical, mountainous scenary along with the wildlife. The food was okay if you're not overly picky. I generally had an omelette made to order for breakfast with fresh fruit and lots of seafood for lunch and supper. If you get the fish grilled to order in the buffet, make sure you choose the basa fish. If you love mango, you need to go when the buffet is opening or it's sure to run out. It is also good to go early if you don't like standing in line for your made to order food. You only get two a la carte reservations and I thought the Italian was the better choice. The pool area was too hot for us so we spent a lot of time at the beach which was beautiful and breezy. The ocean was lovely and warm. This was the only resort I've been to in Cuba where you can't just take your beach chair. There are workers who will bring it to where you want it and take it away the moment you leave (tips!) The entertainment is okay but lacking during the day. I love to dance and the dance lessons are extremely short. The disco on the beach can be fun if you like to stay up to drink/dance. The best show by far was the retro night on our last night with a fun live band that got a lot of people up dancing. As you may have read, the rooms need upgrading and we changed our room (Luna side) do to the poor air-conditioning and the poor condition of the room in general. The room we were given the next day was better but we had to call the technician a couple of times do to water dripping from the air conditioner onto the marble floor (dangerous!) On the plus side, we had a beautiful view from our room and fairly large balcony which we enjoyed sitting on while sipping our favorite drinks. If you like to workout, the gym is fairly decent with a nice view of the ocean (and it is air-conditioned!) In general the staff are friendly but a standout for us was Betty on the animacion team and several of the dining room staff (be sure to go to the outside area immediately to the right of the entrance for the best service.) Get your pesos at the front desk or the hotel bank (I was told that the hotel bank has the best rate.) Tipping: 1 peso every day for the maid (we gave a peso and gift each day and were 'rewarded' with a creative towel creation and handwritten note,) 1 peso at meals and 1 peso for every other drink. The bus to and from the airport is close to one hour so not too bad. We had sandwiches to go from the snack bar which we ate at the airport. The waiting at the airport going home is a bit long as there is not much to do there. The shopping and food areas are very limited. We bought some rum (you can take 2 bottles of 750 ml pp) and some coffee (pretty good!) We went with an open mind as we always do when going to Cuba and we made the most of our week. I hope this review helps you to have a great vacation!

"Best vacation ive ever been on"

   08-06-2018
Honestly the view of the hotel room is magnificent, the staff are very friendly and put their time and effort into their customer service, and most especially a particular entertainer, Betty, was the most amazingly kind person at the resort. She was so outgoing and put her time to make my family and i feel at home. Overall the week i spent here was marvellous!!

"Nice hotel, geat people."

   06-06-2018
This is the 3rd time my girlfriend and I have stayed at the Luna Mares and it was great to be back in Cuba. As other people have said the hotel is nice but some of the rooms are a little dated. But you dont go to Cuba to sit in your rooms. The strength of this hotel is the location and the lovely people. Most of the staff cannot do enough for you. The average wage in Cuba is low compared to most other places so tip often even if it is small amounts. You will get good service in any case but tipping ensures it. The beach here is great, golden sand and palm trees with umbrellas scattered about to rest in the shade from the sun which is very hot. We went in the back end of May and it was between 30-34 most days but there was a nice breeze on the beach to cool you down. The sea is choppy but not so strong as you cant swim in it. Most days you could see people snorkeling along the seeing the fish which there are a few if you go to the right place towards the right hand side of the beach. There are several restaurants in the hotel - The main one where you will have most of your meals is called the Colon and it is a buffet style. There are several stations offering fresh cooked food from Pasta and Pizzas to Seafood and fresh meats. Most days there is also a roast meat too. The food can be a little repetitive but you can always find something to eat. There are also a few others around the hotel. La Pinta is set on the beach and also has a bar. At night it serves as the Mediterranean restaurant. The Italian or Santa Maria restaurant is located just off the Luna reception and does the nicest Lobster ( according to my girlfriend) The French restaurant is located just past the pool in the Luna side and is decorated lovely inside. The Cuban restaurant to located next to the Mares side pool and has open sides with a great view of the beach and sunsets. I was disappointed that the restaurants were only open one night each per week this trip where previously they werre open every night and you could go as many times as you liked, so long as there were spaces free. I dont know if they are cutting costs but a lot of people were disappointed who I had spoken too. We never got invited to the returning guests meal either which was the same again as most people we spoke too. It was a nice touch on previous holidays here. Overall the holiday was good ( not counting the flights) with only the complaints were the cutbacks in the restaurants which otherwise would have been perfect.
