This was our first trip to Cuba, before we left, I checked various sites including trip advisor and numerous reviews and thought that some were a bit unkind. With the knowledge of Cuba’s history, I did not expect luxury, far from it, and thought it was a chance to experience some of the country. Although I found the people to be amazing, especially at this hotel, I felt the staff to be very friendly, and cannot do enough for you, unfortunately all the staff deserve a better hotel to work in, as I experienced the poor facilities they are expected to work with to be extremely outdated and in need of a lot of repair. The food....recent storms have left this country with limited crops and my word, I do believe this is the only holiday I’ve taken where I’ve managed to loose weight, me being very open minded and literally eat anything, was horrified to find sprouts, along with other vegetables, cooked from frozen to be served at breakfast?! Then again at lunch, and again on pizza for dinner, flies regularly landing on all hot plates and food which is understandable as it’s a hot country, but not to the extent in which I witnessed to be very unhygienic! I found numerous human hair in my food regularly and very limited food to choose from, meat at meat station was flash fried and broke one of my teeth it was that tough and hard to bite into, I didn’t even want to attempt the fish station incase I increased the risk of food poisoning and don’t expect any potatoes at all, smash was always on the menu only and unless you fancied fries which had been refried to the point of desecration! The worst food I have ever had! Although I may return to Cuba in the future, I will not be returning to this hotel! Very disappointing as location, staff and climate are fantastic, hotel in need of huge investment and repair and restaurants need decent food.
"First time to Cuba...won’t be the last"
We have just returned from this resort through Westjet Vacations. Sorry for the long review. Points on the resort and our experience. We upgraded to a Standard Oceanview room, which we would forego next visit, as we spent little time in the room. The view was gorgeous and the room was comfortable. Some minor things (hot water took awhile, plug wouldn’t release in the tub, needs a renovation which we hear is coming). The hot water and plug were corrected right away. Overall, met our needs. It was safe and veryclean. The staff at the resort were helpful, friendly and seemed genuine. They seemed to have respect for one another. Many had a good understanding of English and were helpful in teaching words in Spanish to guests. We appreciated seeing that employees got a meal at the buffet during their shift. Some employee shifts are 16 hrs and they have to travel a good distance by bus to get there. Not sure how many hours per week they worked, as they had time off too. Many may only work between October-April as that is tourist season and operators don’t offer many flights in the off season. Tipping is appreciated by the staff, 1-2 CUC will go along way for them. We were told the basic average Cuban salary is 10-13 CUC per month. If you put that in perspective, many of our restaurant meals at home cost more than that per persons monthly salary. Bringing items from home (as gifts: gum, toothpaste, personal hygiene, candy, clothing, toys…) for them helps, as the cost can be quite high to purchase. Try to avoid tipping in your home currency coins as the bank will not take the coins, so the staff have to try to convert the coins into bills and then convert to their currency. You may want to use the bank on the resort property, as the line was very long at the currency exchange at the airport. The resort reception desk will also convert, but the rate is higher than the bank. We converted $150CDN, the reception desk rate was 108 CUC, the bank rate was 114.75CUC. Ask for a receipt from the bank and recount the amount as we were shorted 4.75, which was promptly corrected when brought to their attention. If you arrive after 6pm, use reception to convert a small amount to CUC, to get you through the evening. The bank opens around 8 or 9 am until 6pm. There are two Cuban currencies; CUC which we have referred to in this review for tourists and locals and CUP which is just for locals. For easy conversion, 1 CUC = 24 CUP. A tip we were given, is the bills and coins have pictures of monuments on the CUC, and the CUP have pictures of faces on the front of the bills. The a la carte restaurants were good. Our favourite was the International, followed by Cuban, then Mediterranean and Italian. We would skip the Italian and go for as many of the other three options, as allowed, depending on your duration. Book your a la cartes between 9am-12pm & 2pm-3pm in the Luna lobby on your first day for your stay, don’t delay in booking, as there is limited amount of seating. We appreciated Ronald, as he was a huge help with our reservations for dinners. We had lunch on the beach restaurant one day, in the snack bar another day and other days at the buffet. The snack bar served breakfast (eggs/omelette, bacon, toast, coffee, juice). In the afternoon and evenings there was thin crust pizza which was delicious. The buffet offered a number of choices for people to find something to eat. There is a coffee bar in the Mares lobby which served a great options. There is a steak and lobster option for an additional 18CUC. Entertainment was offered at all times of the day. You can be as busy as you want or keep to yourself. There are single travellers, along with couples, families and groups of all ages. There were plenty of lounge chairs around the pools and at the beach so we did not need to go there early to reserve them. We were a group of 8, so this can be challenging, but did not have an issue staying together, even at the main pool on the Mares side. The Luna pools is smaller and quieter. Someone will help bring chairs for you at the beach, who we tipped accordingly, to the number of chairs we needed. The beach was awesome, clean. Lots of shade. We walked from end to end in about 20 mins. Interesting shells can be found along with sand dollars. It was windy when we were there, so there were not many bugs, only a few ants, nothing to worry about. The property was fogged once when we were there for insects. We brought snorkel equipment and went to the end of the beach (to the right). You can swim out to the reef, where there are lots of different fish. We did see 2-3 big catamarans of people coming from other areas, to this reef to snorkel. Save your money on a snorkelling excursion, as the reef is so close by. Not sure if the resort offers snorkel equipment, if you don’t bring your own. The resort offers small catamarans up to four passengers, with an operator, which was an awesome 25 minute trip. Recommend tipping 5 - 10 CUC. The sailing/cats were only available 2 days during our trip, due to high winds.. Take advantage when open (don’t delay as wind is not predictable). They have paddle boats and windsurfers, which can only be used with calm weather. There are some uneven surfaces at this resort which can be hazardous. We saw at least 5 people with fresh foot casts for sprains, dislocated shoulder, face bandages. There were a few people in wheelchairs, walkers and strollers which may be a bit of a struggle on the uneven stones and steep grades. The washrooms are not accessible. The building in which our room was located in did not have an elevator in it. With our room on the thirds floor, this was fine for us, as the extra exercise was appreciated. Others may need a building with the elevator or on the ground floor. If you have particular needs, you may want to contact the hotel ahead of time to emphasize your requirements. Getting to the some of the a la Cartes and beach may be tricky though. The resort offers wifi for a fee, although it was not working everyday. We chose not to use the wifi, and only used our devices for the time, as there were no clock in the rooms. It was great to disconnect. Family had the phone number of the resort and Facebook messenger for the resort, if contact was required. The Westjet rep met us at the airport, directed us to the transfer buses. Pablo or Jorge (the Westjet reps) were onsite each day for a limited time and available by phone 24/7,which was helpful. Westjet offered some excursions that you can sign up at the resort through the Westjet rep. Prices ranged from 35 CUC to visit a Cuban farm to 300 CUC for Deep Sea fishing. We did one excursion called Inside Cuba for 59 CUC where we visited a cigar factory, Holguin, Loma de Cruz, Gibara and lunch out. The train through the sugar cane plantation was not operating that day, so we were offered a partial refund. The tour was operated by Viajes Cubancan. Marta, who was the guide and did an awesome job. Osmar drove us there safely. This was a whole day activity, which was great value and well worth it. There are other excursion options also available at the resort. The airport transfer was approximately 1 hour, 15 minutes, with 2 stops along the way. Marta was giving commentary along part of the way, which was very informative. There are private transfer options that cost around 25 CUC per person if with a group of 8 or more, that may have arrived a little sooner, but not necessary. Overall, great trip that we would recommend. We will be back to this resort in the future, if Cuba is the destination. This was our first time in Cuba and won’t be the last.
"Amazing 6th vacation at out second home"
We return to SRLM 6th time and were not disappointed. Custom Service was excellent. They responded quick on our problems and fixed them right away. Fresh painted room was always clean, bed was comfortable. We got bottle of water and coffee every day. All appliances, safe and air conditioner were working. We always had hot water .SLMR located in a beautiful place, close to wonderful wide and long beach with a lot of sun beds . You can change beach towels on the beach. It's perfect place for snorkeling. There are sail boats, pedal boats, kayaks,. There are 2 bars on the beach. Resort is clean everywhere. Mares Lobby and some rooms are renovated, they continue to renovate rooms at Mares and will start to renovate rooms an Luna soon.. All staff (in customer service, buffet, a la carte restaurants, bars, maids) were always polite, friendly, did everything and beyond to make our vacation perfect. Wide varieties of food in buffet, always fresh. Cooks are amazing. A lot of coffee varieties at the coffee bar at Mares, a lot of varieties of drinks at all bars. Service was perfect everywhere. A lot of activities for kids and adults at Mares side at day and entertainment at night time. Luna side is quiet. It's easy to walk around Mares and Luna, it doesn't take a long time. Luna is better for people who don't like loud music. There is paid WIFI at Mares Lobby. There is a bank at Mares side but you can change your money at Mares reception too. It's hard to they what we like the best. We like everything - Cuban people, service, room, a la carte restaurants, beach. It's hard to say what we like the least. We are returning customers. We see improvement every year. And we will come again.
"Depends on what your expectations are... The great, the good and the "needs improvement""
Disclaimer: this is the first time I have been to Cuba- and have only been to 3 other all-inclusives south of the U.S. (Mexico, Costa Rica and Colombia) so my experience is somewhat limited. We returned from Sol Rio de Luna y Mares last night. Weather during our week was fabulous. We had a great vacation, but it took a day after we arrived to come to appreciate it. The property is advertised as a 4-star. When we pulled up, it looked pretty nice from he front- but when you enter you have to wonder... who makes up these 'star' ratings? Check in was efficient, rooms were assigned. I've read from other Trip Advisor reviews that some rooms were renovated... didn't know how many or where- when I asked the reception if we could get a renovated room, I was told that they were unavailable (only to find out later that there were very few- however there were nice pictures posted showing what they will look like- and we understand that quite possibly they are working on this reno later this year, one side at a time). We stayed on the Mares side, and entered our room to realize it is an older, tired room with a bit of a musty smell. As we have traveled through Europe, the condition and odour didn't bother us too much- but was a bit disappointed seeing as we spent a 'premium' to be here. Ocean view nice, but the other (standard) view from these rooms would have been fine too. Our flat screen TV hosted 2 'fuzzy' channels- but I understand that others in our group had more channels and better reception. King size bed was well-used, thin but firm. A group in our party had 2 double beds pushed together- they were offered another room when they inquired. Furnishings are worn but ample storage. Our iron didn't work but no problem- just went to dinner more wrinkled than normal. Everything was fine in the bathroom- again older fixtures but ample water pressure and temperature. We were only in our room to sleep (other than freshening up late afternoon for dinner and entertainment)- so the condition wasn't a deal breaker for us. The complex- grounds well manicured, buildings from the outside could use a cleaning and coat of paint to be more attractive. Beware the unevenness of the paths- during the week we have seen some patrons trip while navigating. Ample coffee and drink bars, including one swim-up bar (Mares pool). The Mares pool offers quite a few outdoor activities and constant music. The Luna pool is smaller and quieter. Pools are freshwater and chlorinated- a little cool when you enter but refreshing. There was entertainment every evening at the Mares side and some quieter entertainment at the Luna side and the theatre... one evening was a 'retro night' that was loud- but wrapped up at around 10:30 pm for those of us who pack it in early. The large buffet at the Mares side always presented with a nice variety for all 3 sittings. Service was good, seating adequate for the population. Luna side offers a basic 24h snack and drink service for those night owls and people who do not want simpler fare. There is a smaller lunch only offering at the beach as well. Everyone has different standards for food so the only comment I have is that my wife and I were content (meals outdoors in February- what more can you ask for). We were able to book some restaurants during our stay- remember, this is Cuba and the menus/food don't always translate to our expectations... but great service, ambiance and presentation. The beach was large, well-shaded for us really white folks and ample sun during our stay for those who enjoy soaking it up. White sand and blue warm waters. Ample quantity of lounge chairs. Was able to snorkel at the end of the beach. This property also offered a wind-powered Catamaran ride (a MUST do) and paddleboats. I understand the wind here was strong enough to keep the mosquitos away but not an issue otherwise. All workers at this resort were pleasant and helpful. I was trying to go out of my way to tip some of the non-frontline staff as well (groundskeepers, security). The wages are poor here- but I ask that you do your own research first and decide how you can best help these people. We understand that baseball caps, toys for children, clothing, hygiene products, analgesics, etc. are appreciated. We ventured into the 'Market' in Guardalavaca via horse-drawn carriage- only to realize the market was small and only offered tourist trinkets (which you can get in the resort as well)- the rest of the village seemed off-limits to tourism. The only off-site excursion we enjoyed was 'Inside Cuba'. Well worth it- spent an time in the centre of Holguin (included a cigar factory tour and look-out), and drove through rural Cuba to a fisherman's village for Lunch and back. This tour certainly gives a real perspective of Cuban life. After speaking to other travellers, we realized we made a good decision on choosing this location and property. Visitors who stayed at other properties in the area had similar comments. Some people we met at the resort were repeat customers. If you were patient enough to read this review to the end- please remember: - clean up after yourself. It was not pleasant to see used plastic cups and cigarette butts left behind in the sand because someone was too lazy to walk to the trash, or empty drink glasses scattered throughout the grounds. Yes you are on vacation, but others don't need to experience the mess you leave- I am hoping you do not do this in your own home or community. - please share. There were a few vacationers that believe they can take as much as they want in excess, when they want it (i.e. whole full plates of desserts, heaping meal plates and only finishing less than half, for example). Take what you need and leave the rest for others- there is a limited supply, so when it's gone then people behind you are without. Last comments- enjoy the warmth, the water, the people!
We have arrived on the 30th of January and left on the 13th of February. Yes, the rooms aren’t new at the Luna side, yes, there might be a light is not working or the keycard is not opening the door (do not keep it close to your phone), but the atmosphere and people there are something you won’t forget for the rest of your life. I have never ever met nicer people, same as never cried when had to leave. The only issue l had is there’s no kids menu. My little one has eaten tost, french fries and bananas all two weeks. Also the meet is very hard, so if you go to a le carte, choose sea food, the were 10 of us, so we have ordered different meals at the restaurants and the sea food was the best. Ive been to Varadero 5 years ago, l also enjoyed it a lot and its been my no1 hol till now, now l think this stay was the best ever. Rosy from kids club has made my stay much easier, thank you hunny! You’re the best! It doesn’t matter that not much equipment in the kids club, she really loves kids a lot and makes them busy and entertained, the Cuban nature is very rich, so they had so much fun. My little one didn’t want to leave. Jose and Felix have made lots of our days too. Felix, thanks for all the tricks with the cards. Danil the gardener is also an angel, thanks for all the coconuts! Two senjoritas at the 24 h bar were also the best! Sorry, can’t remember their names, but if you want to come and kiss the staff when leaving, it means a lot. We’ve had great beach party with live music band just before we left and then great party at disco, the dj is great too, he always plays the music you ask. We’ve had amazing birthday party at the wedding gazebo, l will upload some pictures, it was like a fairytale... The customer service staff and Thomas Cook rep were very helpfull too. Thank you!!! I hope l will be back one day <3
