"Simply Fabulous!"

   27-02-2017
We have stayed at Sol Rio de Luna y Mares six times over the past 19 years. (The first time at Luna when they were separate hotels.) Whenever we go we ask ourselves why we bother to go anywhere else. Playa Esmeralda is beautiful and area landscape, mountainy. We have been to many different places in Cuba as well as Mexico, D.R., St. Lucia and Jamaica, but for us nothing is better than Luna y Mares. Just stayed Feb 15-25. BEACH Being an older hotel (Luna side, 1991 and Mares side, 1994), it has the advantage of being built along the beach rather than back from the beach as is the case with new hotels. Wherever you are at this hotel, you are never far from the beach, which is deep and shaded with trees. The colours of the water are incredible: aquas, teals, indigoes, the likes we have never seen anywhere else. Great for swimming and playing in the waves. To the right, at the neighbouring Paradisus Rio de Oro beach, is a beautiful coral reef, which makes for great snorkelling. ROOM We emailed the hotel to request a room, which was provided to us: Luna side, block 6, which is closest to the beach. Beautiful balcony view. Lots of birds: finches, red-headed woodpeckers, among them. Comfortable king size bed, good storage for clothes, lots of hangers. Flat screen TV. It's an older hotel so some might consider rooms a bit tired, but always clean. More than suited us. FOOD We thought the food was excellent by any standard. The buffet could perhaps have been a bit better but there are so many options for dining it was not an issue. We had breakfast at the outdoor Cuba restaurant a la carte daily: eggs, omelletes, bacon, grilled tomatoes made to order. Almost every night we were able to book an a la carte for dinner. (Reservations may be made in the afternoon if space is available.) There are 5 a la cartes (three outdoor, two indoor) and all were wonderful. Being repeat guests we were also invited to a special lobster dinner served by the pool on Luna side, complete with a Cuban band. Good Spanish wine with all dinners, Cristal beer on tap, always cold. Great daiquiris too. TIPPING The staff are excellent: always smiling, very friendly, and often showing that great Cuban humour! We tip in Cuba as we would tip in Canada. Usually a CUC for drinks, 2 CUC for beach chairs, 3 CUC for housekeeping, and 10 CUC for an a la carte dinner. We also tipped musicians. (They played some evenings in the Mares lobby, and sometimes at the beach restaurant, Pinta, at lunch.) That said, tips are not expected and you would still receive the same excellent service, but honestly why wouldn't you tip for such great service? ENTERTAINMENT Loved the evening entertainment from the water ballet to the dance shows in the theatre - truly amazing!! Not glitzy, fancy shows but spectacular dancing that left us in awe. Just sit back and take it in. Incredible what they can do. Always something going on in Mares lobby in evenings:Cuban musicians, rock-type bands, singers. There's also a pool table and ping-pong table. A hub of activity! For the most part not a late night party place. Early to bed, early to rise. RUSTIC CHARM For us, Luna y Mares is more than perfect. It has always had a rustic charm, which we prefer. If you are looking for fancy, glitzy, splashy and new then probably not for you. If you want a fabulous beach, great staff, good food, occasions to meet lots of new friends, you can't go wrong with Luna y Mares. (Complimentary late check-out to 4 pm for repeat guests too, which made for a perfect last day before an evening flight home.) Our sincere thanks to everyone - too many to name - for giving us another dream holiday. Salud y hasta la vista!

"Excellent hotel"

   27-02-2017
We have just returned from our second visit to Luna y Mares. We rarely return to a visited hotel but have no regrets. The setting of the hotel is excellent with good views over the ocean and a stunning beach. The food was of a good standard and amenities good. The staff were excellent and were very helpful without being overbearing. The hotel provides ample entertainment and activities provided by a good animation team. We like the atmosphere of the hotel . In all a very good break.

"High expectations met with disappointment"

   26-02-2017
Was really looking forward to staying here but was disappointed after having such high expectations. Of course it's Cuba, and we've been to Cuba before so we know to take it with a grain of salt...have traveled lots in Caribbean and know what to expect, usually! Knew that there were going to be some renos going on but expected the rooms to be a lot better for a 4-star. The beach was also a disappointment, didn't expect that part of the beach to be so rough. Based on reviews there was rave reviews about snorkeling...don't fall for it! Next time I won't waste my time bringing my snorkeling gear. Staff was friendly, especially at meals...didn't really get to know our bartending staff like we're normally used to when we travel...but that's ok. Was disapointed in shows & entertainment, for Cuba we're used to better shows and did not like the lack of Cuban/Latino Music...if I wanted to hear American music and dance music, I can hear that at home anytime! Another issue was that they ran out of favorite drinks a lot....like the mojitos! We're in Cuba and you run out of the most popular drink?! Would definitely come back to the area as we love the country & Cuban people but would stay closer to downtown.

"No Way is this a 4 star resort"

   26-02-2017
Went with group of 5 couples. Room was run down, and 4 out of the 5 couples changed their rooms. Expected more for a 4 star. Resort always ran out of drinks (ex. mojitos). Beach was not that nice, water was rough every day. Resort did not have much in way of entertainment and played very little Cuban/Latino music which is what we look forward to when we go to Cuba...played way too much American music (i.e. stuff we hear all the time back home). Lobby was rather run down even after renovations in other parts of it, there was a leak that was there all week and was never fixed. Day we left was still leaking and had buckets & caution signs around it. On a positive note, staff were nice and always tried their best. Definitely have no intentions of staying here again.

"Really Fun"

   25-02-2017
The hotel room was OK. I don't know why everyone is complaining about the food because it was perfectly fine and if you want a variety, just go to different restaurants. The beach was amazing; very clear water. Nightlife was pretty fun, my favourite night was White Night, it was really cool. The staff was really friendly and kind. If you decide to go here, I recommend you stay on the Mares side. The Luna side is kinda boring. Overall, great trip. Stayed from Feb.18th to Feb.24th
