Over Florida Hotel

"Standard hotel - bar With dans"

This hotel has a good location and Big rooms. The bathrooms is old and need soon renovation. We only eath breakfast in the restaurant and it was ok. There is a bar where ther is salsa dans every evening but you can't hear the Music on your room. You Can by card to the internet in a shop in the hotel and use it in the lobby. The staff is not smiling to the guests only to eachother.

"Visit in december for 2 nights"

Beautiful building with a nice inner court. The location is great, in the center of the old town. Rooms are ok, but not the most hygienic. Staff is quite friendly, but you do not have the real Cuban feeling.

"Perfect location but a maximum 3* hotel per European standards"

The hotel is located on one of the busiest roads in Havana right in the heart of the old Havana. Perfect location. From there you can walk the entire old part of the town. The hotel is very old (1885). It is a beautiful building with a big busy lobby and a popular piano bar where there is salsa dancing every night. These are the good attributes of the hotel. Everything else is from acceptable to terrible. There is a confirmed hot water problem with rooms 1, 2 and 3 (possibly others too). There is simply no water running when you open the hot knob. We heard people complaining about it when we were checking in and realised in the evening that we had the same problem. When we went down to reception to complain, they sent a girl to check and we were told that everything was fine as we had water! So for them an issue arises only if you cannot flush the toilet! After going back to reception we were given an option of another room at the back of the hotel which had warm (not hot) water but was absolutely terrible. I ended up having a shower there as I was desparate after a 2 hour salsa class and told them that if the problem continued the following day they would need to change us room. Second day same issue so in the end we were moved to a room on the second floor which was much nicer and had hot warer (even though it was coming in waves!). Reception was not very helpful the first day but the girl who was on shift the second day was more helpful. Breakfast is rather poor but you can have a coffee and a toast with some butter and jam/cheese to start the day. Having said these, I guess this is how Havana is. A 5* hotel there is an equivalent of a 3* European hotel. So unless you want to pay a lot of money for the top end ones, $250 a night will only get you as far as Florida hotel. You also need to book well in advance as there is limited availability of rooms in Havana and the good hotels sell out go quickly. I attach some pictures of room 3 which had the problems and which was also very noisy as it faces the main street. Do NOT stay there.

"Convenient location in Old Town"

No glass in the bedroom windows, only wooden shutters, so rooms are noisy. Fairly old fashioned rooms but AC worked. We had a room on the side of hotel, and were there during Fidel's mourning period, so there was no music. It was still quite noisy. Breakfast was a buffet, things ran out, unidentifiable food items appeared, and it was nothing to write home about. The hotel management had their own table in the dining room and were waited on with freshly cooked eggs; an option not available for guests!! However the location allowed us to walk around the old town, see the sites and find places for dinner, etc.

"Good location but hotel needs work"

We spent 5 days at the Florida in September and it was not what we were expecting, even making exceptions for Cuba and its difficulties. On our first night we stayed in room number 2 and were greeted by a musty smell, which was caused by an established leak in the ceiling, consequently the floor was soaking and I had to listen to a drip all night as they were unable to give us a new room until the following morning, The pillows smelt like feet and the walls seemed to be moulding in certain places to the extent you could write your name on them. Thankfully the next day we moved into room 7 without any apology, the new room was an improvement but still remained unbelievably noisy and dark. The rest of the hotel did not make up for the short falls of the rooms. We found the staff to be unhelpful and incredible rude generally, breakfast was very poor and the staff seemed completely unaware of guests, for the best part of breakfast the staff sat at the bar chatting. I don't believe hotels styled as colonial have any excuse to provide facilities and services such as the above. I would not recommend this hotel, from what I've seen of Havana there appear to be numerous nice hotels which may be better suited.
