Over Florida Hotel

"Fantastic location"

We recently stayed at the Hotel Florida for Father's Day. We had three rooms, all towards the front of the hotel (101,102, 103) The staff could not have been more helpful. We used our broken Spanish and they used their very fine English to converse with us. Knowing that we had three rooms (Grandparents. Parents and 2 grown daughters), the hotel was very knowledgeable on how they assigned the rooms. The daughters got room 103, over the salsa bar-they can sleep through anything. My in-laws got 102 with the larger bedroom but two twin beds that we pushed together. We got the "matrimonial bed,' thank you, Hotel Florida! 101 and 102 face the street which gives an amazing view in both directions to the old city. I read the reviews, both good and bad, and can see where the folks were coming from with their complaints but this is Cuba, people! It's an experience. You can stay in some of the newer hotels in New Havana but then you are missing the incredible experience that is Old Havana. I highly recommend getting a tour guide to show you the old city. We secured a horse and buggy ride and it made our weekend. Our guide knew where the great food was (think eating inside someone's kitchen). The people in Cuba were as kind as they come and we felt completely safe in the city.

"An excellent place to stay while exploring the city"

I've read a lot of negative comments, but they come primarily from the Ugly Americans, who travel to other countries for the express purpose of complaining that not everything exactly as they would have it in America. I have no time for such people. Look, the Hotel Florida is an older hotel, so this isn't the Ritz. The room furnishings are old. But, the bathroom was very comfortable with none of the issues that Americans seem to have with the lack of toilet paper or whatever. The A/C worked fine. TV was a little staticky, but I didn't come to Cuba to watch TV. The hotel breakfast isn't great, but if you stick to eggs, sausage, fruit, and bread, it's fine. I didn't have any issues with the staff. To the contrary, the staff went above and beyond for us and were very helpful. But, then again, unlike many of our fellow Americans, we make an effort to speak Spanish and tip when warranted. But, the building itself is beautiful and you couldn't be in a more convenient spot from which to explore the city. There are plenty of great bars and restaurants within a block or two. We had a very pleasant stay and look forward to coming back.

"Cuban quirks at a great location "

Stayed here for 3 nights on a recent holiday in Cuba. We had a fairly large double room with en suite bathroom. There was glass in the windows though other reviewers have had a different experience. Air con worked fine. Furniture is from the 1940s which was part of the charm but it was also prone to falling apart. This is an old building and must have been very grand in its day but like many in Cuba it hasn't been well maintained. Also the water runs out periodically and there can be a wait for the new supply to be pumped in. We took that in our stride, we were there to experience Cuba after all. Staff were mostly very helpful though some of the Receptionists didn't always look pleased to see us and the bar staff seemed put out if we disturbed them to buy a drink. Wifi works in the lobby area. You can buy wifi cards at the hotel shop at more than double the cost as from the Etecsa shop along the road, but we did this rather than stand in the queue at the shop. Breakfast is truly bad, there are lots of unidentifiable items made from incredibly chewy meat, fresh fruit left open for the flies to share and I don't know what they serve as coffee but it really isn't coffee! I'm a well known greedy guts but I couldn't eat one of those breakfasts again. A great breakfast can be had for 3 CUC at La Luz which you'll find by turning left as you go out of the hotel main entrance and walking a short distance. There is a salsa bar in the hotel which was great fun and we couldn't hear any noise from our 2nd floor room. If you want a first world hotel in Havana I recommend the Iberostar Parque Central. If you want something a little more Cuban and can keep your sense of humour when faced with culture shock then Hotel Florida is in a fabulous location to explore Old Havana on foot. Lots of bars and restaurants nearby so you can eat well elsewhere.

"Needs better customer service!"

Location was great but thats where it stops. I could put up with the little nuances in the rooms like light switches and toilet flush occasionally not working and no ashtray supplied to be able to smoke on balcony but the customer service and food i cant. I was only acknowledged once in our 4 days there by a housemaid. The breakfast was terrible and like slush. Food was cold and unappealing and juice was warm. The wait staff scowled the whole time and once again no acknowledgement. Not sure of the doormans job but it obviously was not to greet guests. Cuba needs to realise thats its going to be the tourists that will bring money back into the country and act accordingly. This was not a cheap hotel and feel ripped off.

"Nice building terrible hotel,"

We arrived late at night, tried to purchase a roll from the piano bar, told we couldn't because they were for the staff only. Breakfast was just uneatable. Apart from the location and building its crap.
