"Historia / Great hotel"

We stayed in the Hotel Nacional for 3 nights and this hotel is simply beautiful, full of history... Right opposite El Malecon which you can walk during the day until Havana Vieja. Front Desk ladies need to smile a little more, but everyone was efficient overall. Breakfast buffet (La Veranda) gets busy after 8.30am, but there were decent choices every morning and we enjoyed it. The F&B teams do a good job for dinner in La Barraca (Cuban menu) and in Comedor de Aguiar (local and international fine dining). Their mojitos are amazing! The room was spacious enough with a lovely view. Internet is pretty slow, but the Concierge will give you a free WIFI card with log-in codes during your stay. We already miss the place and the feel!!! Hasta siempre Cuba!!!

This is a review on staff and accommodations. While in Cuba my partner and I stood in an Air B&B but we wanted some Wifi so off to the Hotel National we went. The staff was so friendly and accommodating they guided us up to the business center where we can buy internet cards (which are 5 CUC a little pricey). Then we found out that you can actually use the pool for $25 CUC, which seemed outrageous at first. But Maria the lady helping us explained that it was pretty much a $20 Food credit and $5 to use the pool we stood there all day until our dinner reservation at 6. I would recommend beautiful views, nice pool, fresh mojitos, and lovely staff.

"A piece of history!"

We stayed here one night to experience a piece of history. The hotel contains a small museum of pictures of notable individuals who have stayed at the hotel and there have been quite a few from a variety of countries. The hotel itself is quite spectacular, a large, well maintained building across from the ocean (and Malecon). The interior lobby area is small and narrow, however well maintained. Check in took quite some time and while the receptionists were not friendly, neither were they rude. It was clear that this was just a job and they didn’t really care if you were there or not. But again we were there for the history. Check-in time is 4pm, but there is a place to store luggage and our rooms were ready for us to check in at 3:30. We booked two rooms and the two rooms were on two different floors. Not sure if there was any attempt to give us two rooms together, or not, but what we got was fine. One room had a very nice marble floor and the other a carpet that was in fairly good shape. Both rooms had small bathrooms and both had some mold and the bathtubs looked like they were either stained or maybe discolored in sections due to quite a bit of use. But, none of this was bad enough to make a difference. In the back of the hotel is a garden, two bars, a small café and plenty of seating space from which you can look at the ocean and the garden area. Musicians sometimes play. Further in the garden are tunnels/bunkers that are opened in the day. The tunnels run under the hotel yard. This is worth the 10 minutes to check out and when we went, the worker walked with us through the tunnel, explaining what we saw – a scope from the 60s, the place where guns would be placed, etc. The cost was free, but we gave the guide a tip. The hotel also has 2 pools, a shop where you can buy necessities, for example, one of us forgot a toothbrush, a café, the museum I had mentioned and a couple of dining rooms. We had the breakfast buffet with our rooms and it was excellent. It contained a very large number of choices – eggs cooked multiple ways, cheese/meat, breads, fruits, cereals, pastries and Cuban food. If you didn’t see what you wanted, the chef could make it for you to order. Money exchange was simple and this hotel gave the same rate as the banks. (The airport/hotels/banks are all supposed to give the same rate, as they are all govn controlled. However, we went to 2 hotels which gave less than the bank rate.) However, look at the paper showing how much money you should receive and/or do the math yourself. In one case, I was to receive, let’s say 789.68 CUCs. I was only given 789. That’s not bad. Some other hotel shorted me 32.00 CUCs. In both cases, I spoke up and received the correct amount. When you check out, you are given a slip of paper from the receptionist. Be sure to keep that handy as the security guard doesn’t let you leave with your suitcases unless you have that paper.

"way past its days of glory"

Once listed as a great hotel, sadly, it has fallen into not so good times. For one, the rooms have a dinghy look and are often unkempt. Too much is crammed in small rooms with a stinking carpet and loo to boot. One gets the feeling of being cramped in there. Food was generally okay but the travel desk left much to be desired. We had booked a tour of Santa Clara and Trinidad and paid the full amount in advance. Sadly, the tour was canceled a day before and no alternative was provided. Tye staff was a tad arrogant thinking that they were still living in the years of glory of the Hotel. Views from the Hotel are remarkable.

"This place is great"

Stayed here for a few nights on the way back , oozes character, grand high walls , lavishly tiled floors and attentive staff. We didn't eat here as we wanted to get into Havana for the last two nights. Really centrally located, a must experience
