"Glad we stayed here"

   12-12-2017
We only stayed here three nights then went to Varadero for four nights but on reflection would have far preferred to stay at the Nacional another few nights to continue to explore the intriguing history and a little more of fascinating Havana. The hotel is located away (10 mins by car) from Old Havana but there is no issue at all with quick taxi journeys (or classic car journeys if you desire). Definitely take the free hotel history tour they offer to guests. If you have Aelean (sorry not sure about spelling) as your guide, you will have a wonderful experience. She is warm and informative. We could not really believe there were only just a couple of people on the tour as it is fantastic! Definitely have a 'Caipirisma' out in the garden overlooking the Malecon - it's a twist on the Caipirinha that seems not to be on the menu but I read about it through someone else's post so ordered it and it was fab! The service is generally pretty slow in the main Gallery Bar and not particularly attentive in the bars generally. The snack offering is extremely limited to a few toasted sandwiches and sadly the only time we ate in the hotel was when we didnt have much time so that was it - hence we do not have any comments on the dining options. The hotel itself is five star but, like so many other people comment on this site, it is not 'exactly' five star. But forgive it for being a little rustic, lacking any sort of update and somewhat rough around the edges as that is all part of the experience. The rooms are definitely clean and a very good size, but basic. Definitely worth leaving daily tips for the maids - their notes of gratitude are lovely to receive. We stayed on the Executive Floor. The advertisement of snacks being available all day isn't true - there was never a snack in sight! I wouldn't actually have a clue what being on that level really gave us in the end. The 'special' check in on that level took an age on arrival with only one person on duty and many waiting - so it would have been quicker to check in on the ground level. Then when we got to our room it was a twin - for a married couple!!! It was then corrected promptly and with a smile, but I fail to see why the person would have allocated us that room type. After a long journey UK to Madrid to Havana, this was slightly irritating. It is also really not acceptable that you have a coffee machine in your room but then have to pay for each coffee capsule. Also, the hotel does not supply maps of the area or Old Havana, like just about every single other hotel in the world does for its guests! So that is irritating too, to have to buy one for CUC3. As a 'five star' hotel it should use ways like these to make itself worthy of being called 5 star - i.e. just a few little touches would be nice. On a positive note, money changing at the cashier was easy and very efficient every time and the rate seemed aokay to us. The doorman Jose was also very happy to help us arrange a classic car trip for 30 mins instead of the 'standard' 60 minutes given the limited time we had available, so that was much appreciated. So yes perhaps a few gripes but I would definitely suggest to people to experience this hotel as part of the historical aspect of their visit to Havana. On that note, be sure to go and look at the bar that has all the Hall of Fame photographs of famous guests etc.

"Seven Days was too long"

   11-12-2017
As everyone knows this is the Grand Hotel of Cuba. Lots of great history here. Our room was fairly large with two double beds and no dressers for storing clothes, and no couch or easy chairs, just two wicker rockers. The curtains were extremely shabby, falling off the hooks. However the A/C was excellent. The bathroom had a very old shower arrangement which flooded the floor and the sink was a pedestal with no place to put anything. The plan included breakfast which is in a rather dingy basement restaurant and was very limited and poorly organised. On the positive side the swimming pool and environs are excellent, and the two restaurants while pricey are very good by Cuban standards. Taxi into Old Havana was about 10 to 15 CUC's one way which can add up if you want to go into town every day. We found lots of smaller restaurants and bars within walking distance of the hotel. They were very Cuban in dilapidated old houses. There were two main shows at the hotel, the Parisien Cabaret and the 1930 club. Both expensive and OK, not great, particularly if you don't speak Spanish. The hotel staff were extremely friendly and a joy to deal with as are all Cubans we met. But we were supposed to receive information on our transfer back to Marti airport which was never done and we were told we had to pay for their telephone call to get this information from AIr Canada Vacations!! We were also not informed of the 100 CUC limit on the guest service cards which led to some embarrassment.. Four days was probably enough at the hotel. Drinks are quite pricey too.

"Diving in Cuban past"

   11-12-2017
We spent 2 nights in this hotel, first step of our trip of 10 days in Cuba Very beautiful architecture that take you back to the early 20th century Just imagine that for 150$ you sleep in the same room as Eva GARDNER used to..... We enjoyed the nice garden and its bar and terrace - The breakfast was also at the ggod level with plenty of choices And the view on the ocean and the Malecon is just magic at the early morning All this make you forget the old facilities ;-)

"Beautiful architecture, nice outdoor area for drinks and cigars, old facilities"

   10-12-2017
Architecture is beautiful, with lots of history to learn from guided tours, which can be done without staying in the hotel. Conservation of facilities could be better, although no critical issues, just be aware that the hotel dates back to 1930. If you like this vibe you're all good here. Enjoy the nice outdoor area and view of the ocean with drinks and cigars, specially at the end of a long day of walk. The location is a bit far from the center and other most visited place by tourists, but taxi and coco-taxis were all available easily outside the main entrance. Negotiate to get better rates, trips to midtown range from 6-8 cuc. In my opinion, the good part of my review can be enjoyed without staying in the hotel by dropping by in any given day. Guided tours and outdoor area are open to non-customers. I believe you might get a better value (rooms, food and location) for your money in another hotel closer to the center. Staff was pleasant.

"Grand old hotel, not everything works"

   08-12-2017
We spent 2 nights at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba in December. Many nice architectural details in this old hotel. We had 110V outlets so didn’t need a transformer to convert from US. Desk downstairs to convert currency to CUCs. A standing lamp worked the first night but then not again. Temperature in room difficult to control. Was freezing cold the first night. Elevator would only arrive to go up if you pressed the down button. Beautiful grassy courtyard overlooking the ocean. Free Mojito welcome cocktail which was horrible. Friendly staff. New TV in room.
