"Wonderful character and history - but so worn out!"

   04-12-2016
We wanted to stay at this old historic hotel and were prepared of its flaws. We stayed here twice, the first time on the third floor in a room towards the sea. This room was dark and smelled of mold. The air condition leaked so the carpet was wet. We had to put the waste basket under it. It was positive though that when the staff saw this, they sent up a man directly to fix it. The second time we had a room on the second historic floor which was much nicer. No wall-to-wall-carpet and not smelly. This room overlooked the entrance and was a lot brighter and nicer. Even so we found a cockroach in the bathroom. The areas are really great (but old), both indoors and outdoors. So much history and the guided free tour was really interesting. Breakfast was crowded and even though they offered a lot of choices it wasn´t that great. It is easy to get a taxi to old town Havana. I enjoyed my stay despite the shortcomings of this hotel. I wouldn´t miss it for the world. The history is truly amazing! I am glad though that we travelled with a travelling company that gets better prices than if you book as a individual, because Hotel Nacional is expensive compared to standard. I believe that it is only a matter of time before it will be renovated and the prices rise even more.

"Disappointing ..."

   03-12-2016
We visited the Hotel Nacional prior to an evening show. The interior of the hotel looked tired and the lobby area was packed with non residents, like us there for an evening show. The meal we had was poor, even accepting that Cuba has logistical issues. For instance we were expecting a Smoked Salmon first course and a Prawn Salad arrived. The menu was in English, so there was no confusion there. Plus the portion sizes were tiny. In summary if you are there as a non resident, I recommend you just stick to a single pre-show drink on the busy outside terrace, which we thought lacked the wow factor.

"Prerevolutionary grandeur, complete with bunker and trenches"

This hotel gives some sense of what life was like for tourists pre-revolution and how the culture is now trying to embrace the influx of tourists while staying true to revolutionary ideals, which is a tricky balancing act. So - you have a gorgeous, ornate and relatively well-maintained property (especially by Cuban standards, where things are often held together with baling wire and bubble gum) that coexists with several large portraits of Fidel Castro in the lobby, and it has retained the artillery, trenches, and bunker out in the garden area overlooking the Malecon as a reminder of the 1962 missile crisis. The elevators are slow but reliable, while the plumbing is a bit more temperamental. Expect to have problems with flushing your toilet but the maintenance staff is quick and efficient. Housekeeping service is adequate if slow. The breakfast and dinner buffets are large but sometimes crowded, but there are plenty of choices. The wait staff at the buffets are friendly if somewhat overwhelmed, so patience and a smile will get you that coffee refill quicker than being demanding. There is also a more casual restaurant on the lower level with great soup and huge sandwiches, as well as a fancier gourmet restaurant that we never tried. Don't miss the bar tucked into one corner off the lobby that is a throwback to pre-revolutionary days and has a gallery of all the celebrities who've had a mojito there. There are two outside bars, one just outside the lobby and another at the far end of the grounds overlooking the sea and malecon - both have good drinks at reasonable prices. We particularly liked the outside restaurant, La Barraca, which serves "criollo" food - typical Cuban food. Really liked the ropa vieja (shredded roast beef) and the pork dishes. The servers might try to push you into more expensive entrees (the only time we experienced this in Cuba, by the way) but don't bite! There is also a decent cigar store on the lower level with a good selection of cigars and also accessories.

"Disappointing "

   29-11-2016
I was hugely disappointed with the hotel nacional. I would definitely recommend visiting the gardens for a drink but don't stay here. It's horrendously overpriced. The room smells damp, we had no hot water. We had to bring our bags into the hotel ourselves (which I don't mind but the people working there were really rude and unhelpful- maybe because we were young). Internet is 7CUC an hour which was the most expensive we saw throughout Cuba. The breakfast wasn't great - average. Cuba is a hard one. The hotels are expensive and for a 5 star hotel I expected more. It was more like a 2/3 star experience. I far preferred the hotel Sevilla mercure where the staff were friendly and there was a fun vibe. Hotel nacional relies on its name to get people in but it was a rip off.

"A grand old lady on the Malecon"

   27-11-2016
The hotel Nacional oozes tons of charm AND it has a pleasant outside garden bar where you can have a drink not even for an outrageous price (think CUC 2,50 for a beer). Also it sports a good alternative to the expensive Tropicana cabaret, the Cabaret Parisien. We walked the Malecon (seafront boulevard) from the Paseo to the Nacional, about an hour walk, and had some drinks and admired the historic hotel. Then we took an old American Chevy 55 taxi back to Havana Vieja for CUC 12. It was great fun!
