Over Santa Isabel Hotel

"I gave this hotel a four star as compared with other hotels in Havana."

My wife and I stayed here last week, and generally had a good experience. You have to temper your expectations in Cuba, so knowing that this was a good experience. The room was large, clean and had a view over Plaza das Armas. The hotel had excellent doors on the patio which blocked any noise. There were problems with the hotel that are representative of the condition of Cuba - light fixtures did not work, the hair dryer was broken and took two days to fix. The breakfast was great - you could order what you wanted off a menu but the service is slow. The hotel is well located if you want to be in Old Havana. I would recommend this hotel.

"The perfect place to stay in Old Havana"

Hotel Santa Isabel is well-located, luxurious, historic and staffed by professionals with remarkable courtesy and attention to detail. We upgraded our room (for only 20 CUC per night) to include a terrace with a view of the plaza that was breathtaking. Welcome drinks were offered at the sophisticated, indoor bar. A lovely breakfast was served al fresco accented by music of a strolling trio and with a view of the neighboring castillo.

"Be open minded."

The Hotel Santa Isabel has perhaps the best location in the old city. On the Plaza de las Armas, the second-floor rooms have French doors and stained glass windows that lead out to balconies over the square, giving views of the locals, the tourists, and the bookseller stalls that line the plaza every day. Just a few blocks from the Museo de la Revoluccion, the cathedral, and the main tourist drag of Obispo, it's right in the heart of the old city. Converted from an 18th-century mansion into a hotel, its elegant courtyard and 20-foot-ceilinged rooms exude the luxury of former centuries. However, its dim lighting and electricity, the fairly hot water, and the 1950s mattress feel just plain old, and none too luxurious. The lack of carpeting throughout means you're likely to hear the occasional bang or shout. And oh yeah, the dogs barking in the Plaza are charming, but not at 2:00 am. So it depends what you want: if you need bright lighting, a gym, and the usual American amenities, the new Sheraton out in Miramar may be your best bet, even though it's like staying in Queens. But if you want the Times Square experience (at about a Times Square price), try the Santa Isabel.

"Beautiful building but terrible staff "

This hotel was a disappointment from the moment we arrived and it's a shame as It looked so lovely from the outside ! The rooms were ok (2 star) although hotel rated itself 5 but we were on the top floor and the elevator broken. The phone to reception didn't work and neither did the safe. We could have put up with this ( it is Cuba after all) except that the Staff were totally unhelpful and dismissive from the moment we arrived. When we tipped the bellboy one peso for taking our bag 20 yards he looked grumpy and demanded 3 - we then had to carry our bags up and down stairs as no one helped us and the elevator was broken. When asked about the safe not working the receptionist shrugged her shoulders- the concierge seemed to always be looking at her phone and when asked where a restaurant was seemed annoyed to be disturbed and said she didn't know ( even though we found out later it was a block away and was famous - The breakfast staff were unbelievably dismissive never waiting for an answer and throwing plates down in front of us and the breakfast itself was very very bad. Other guests we spoke to all said the same thing. The final straw for us was on the last day we requested a late check out 1pm as opposed to the usual 12 . The desk in the morning said ok and that it would be 10 pesos to which we agreed. When he went down at exactly 1pm as planned a new person behind the desk literally screamed at us in front of fellow guests saying how dare we check out late and then to add insult to injury demanded 20 pesos ! We were shocked by the attitude of the man and felt almost verbally abused. There are much nicer hotels to stay in Havana that are just as quaint and historic so don't waste your time booking this one.

"Wonderful old hotel in Havana Vieja"

We spent a week at Santa Isabel in January 2017. We had expected shabby with few amenities but were pleasantly surprised. We had a suite overlooking the Plaza des Armes with a sunny stained glass window in the door opening onto the Plaza. The bathroom toiletries were wonderful, as was the jacuzzi tub and bidet. The furnishings were old but the bed was comfortable. Our only complaint is cleaniliness: the carpet was dirty and didn't seem to be cleaned while we were there, and there was a biting bug -- a spider? -- in the bed. Breakfast was terrific, with lots of options. And the location is outstanding!
