Over Iberostar Grand Trinidad

Our favorite

"Luxury in a wonderful old town"

Trinidad is a fascinating town, and the Iberostar is a five star experience. The hotel is right by the square and a short walk into the main part of the old town. The hotel is well furnished and rooms are large and comfortable. We had no complaints about any part of our stay here and recommend the hotel unreservedly. The restaurant is decent and the breakfast was very enjoyable - a wide buffet spread. The hotel has wi-fi in the bar area although like most places you will need to buy time. (One tip - the cards bought here will probably not work elsewhere and certainly not at other hotels. Each hotel seems to like to sell it's own cards for access to its wif-fi). The hotel also has a cigar smoking room for those who want to enjoy one of Cuba's specialities. Two other tips - for Cuba generally rather than this hotel - take mozzie bite cream. The little beggars are persistent and not necessarily deterred by repellents unless you keep topping them up. And - keep some money in reserve just in case. We knew that Cuba is still largely a cash culture with credit cards only being accepted in some restaurants and hotels. At a five star hotel we felt safe on this front and indeed, the Iberostar does accept cards. Unfortunately on the day we checked out, the link for card payments was not working and they could only accept cash. We had heard varied reports on the reliability of the local ATMs so it was good we had kept some cash back to pay for a week of putting the odd rum etc onto the room charge. All in all, this is a lovely hotel and Trinidad is certainly worth a few days of your time in Cuba.

"Probably the Best Hotel in Cuba"

We stayed for two nights and were extremely impressed by the hotel and quality of service. To see the hotel manager at breakfast and dinner is rare in this day and age. He had a friendly word for both guests and staff (more hotels should try this approach - it was wonderful). Lovely notes left by chamber maids, in English, they obviously checked the nationality of the guest. Food was excellent as was the service - what more can one ask for!

"Nothing short of a miracle "

It has been a few months since I stayed there. Life is busy but I just feel this urge to share my experience. Because considering how little they had to work with, what my partner and I experienced during our stay @ Iberostar Grand Trinidad was nothing short of a miracle. Travel date: 8/1/18-10/1/18 First impression: 4/5 The first interaction with this property was through emails - I wanted to arrange a pick up from Santa Clara Airport. Anyone who has been to Cuba or has tried to deal with Cuba knows how difficult and flaky communication can be. I also had my reservations to begin with. But my skepticism soon disappeared when I received a prompt reply from Yunasy- she was helpful and professional- she really put my mind at ease regarding the quality of hospitality in Trinidad. Even though our flight was delayed for 2 hours, the driver was still patiently waiting for us when we arrived and safely got us to the hotel. As we arrived at almost midnight, even in the dark I could tell that this property is definitely the best in town. The bellboy took over the luggage and we quickly checked in. I could’ve experienced the same in any other major city. I enjoyed the water feature in the atrium. Room: 4/5 A room on 1st floor with a nice balcony facing Plaza Carrillo. The room was spacious and clean. The furniture looked a bit dated but everything was working well. The bathroom was nice and clean. Water pressure, however, left something to be desired. I really liked the balcony (see attached) it was a nice place to watch people go by. Services: 5/5 It wasn’t as smooth and seamless as Ritz London, it wasn’t warm and bending back-and-forwards like Peninsula Tokyo, but I could tell that all of the people at Iberostar Grand Trinidad really tried their best. And that’s a really beautiful thing. Don’t expect unlimited wifi- you need to get purchase scratch card for very patchy services. Each scratch card gives you a code for 1 hour access- our room came with 6 hours of complementary internet time. Which surprisingly was more than enough! I hate to sound condescending but one simply can’t expect to receive in Cuba the same level of hospitality they would in the rest of world. The front desk was efficient. The concierge service was warm and helpful- it was a treat to finally meet Yunasy in person. The housekeeping was just as competent as anywhere else in the world- with their own cuteness. My towels were made into shape of an elephant (see attached). It was something corny that happens often on a cruise ship, still I enjoyed it. Location: 5/5 Its situated by the second largest plaza KM the city and only about 10 min walk from the main plaza. Trinidad is a small place and it’s easy access to everything. Restaurant: 4/5 I loved the decor of the main dining room- I especially adored the big pineapple chandelier- it just adds so much colonial vibe. The bar does really mean Mojito- and so cheap! The breakfast buffet is reasonable and to be honest, quite respectable considering the lack of resource in Cuba. The spread is pretty impressive, but the quality, well, all I can say is they really don’t have much to work with. Even tropical fruits, which should be abundant, seem to fall flat in terms of taste. Dinner service was decent. Food was once again a bit bland but once again they tried the best they can. My partner and I both enjoyed the quartet band that played during dinner. It was truly like a dinner experience from the movies in the 50s’. I can’t remember their name but they played beautifully. If you are reading this review, please remember to bring some CUC down with you for dinner and buy their CD, my partner and I still regret not doing so. Overall: 5/5 The reason I feel so compelled to write a review on this property is because I believe Iberostar Grand Trinidad deserves to be acknowledged. In a place where all basic resources in life are scarce, what this hotel has achieved is quite amazing. Considering they are running a monopoly on the luxury hospitality market in Trinidad, I commend their ongoing effort- it seemed to me that they really take pride in what they do. It is by no means perfect, but I believe that people should continue to support them and give them a chance to thrive. A few tips: 1. Request a room with balcony. 2. Leave all the first world attitude behind. Experience this property as it is- you will start to develop respect for Cuban people.

"The best place to stay in town"

More precise, the only reasonable place to stay at this old historic, charming, but very poor town. It’s good to stay in an island for comfort, away of this poor environment the local people have to life in. Poor, poor, poor. The clock stopped there 70 years ago.

"Best Hotel in Trinidad"

Step back into time as you enter the lobby just off the main square. Beautifully appointed, excellent service, friendly staff and charming decor. Stop by the cigar lounge or wander across the street to sample local food vendors and mingle with the locals in the square. And they have cheap Wifi which is unheard of un Cuba!
