Over Sol Palmeras

Our favorite

"We want to go back..."

   23-03-2017
The trip to Cuba was awesome, one of our best trips. So, about the hotel, we do not regret the choice, we loved it. To have in mind that it is Cuba and because of the embargo it is normal that the feed-stock is very expensive and because of that they try to maintain the structures the best they can. This is valid for all the hotels. Anyway, some things could be better like the bathroom door structure, the patch was not well made, but in general we can't complain. We loved the room, it was near the pool with a good space to sit and read or to smoke. The areas in the hotel were always clean, unless some guest choose to leave the plastic cups on the sand or in any other place, but that it is the guest fault and the lack of respect to others. So the room was always well clean, everyday, 100% good! We loved the beach, the water, the sand, the birds and fishes. The entertainment is spectacular, everyday, during the day and during the night, the team is very good. For the restaurants and since my wife is celiac, we had our options limited. We have visited the Steak House at the pool area and the buffet. We loved the food and the variety. The drinks are also very good with a lot of variety too. At the buffet (La Panchita) we have to thank to Jorge Enrique and Ada Nerys, they were AWESOME, always kind and very professional, they have made a difference in our stay, definitely. We also have to thank to Whiskhelms (hope to have written the name right) and Mabel also from the buffet (La Panchita) and Ernesto from the Cubitas bar. In general the staff is very kind and professional. Only one note about the dishes, not always were very well washed (I think they wash everything by hand, and that can be a problem there is always a lot o people) but nothing like to change it to another. A bad thing goes for some shops inside the hotel, the prices should be visible with the products since we bought a product with one price one day and we asked for the same product the next day (different person) and the price was different. A sugestion: The hotel could have a list in the buffet area with the information about the allergens in the foods, such has milk, eggs, gluten, seafood, etc. Overall, we loved our stay and hope to get back one day! Hints: We have made the trip to Colonial Havana, was awesome, and Cayo Blanco, very beautiful.

"Front desk individualized care"

   21-03-2017
My wife and I traveled throughout Cuba this month, using a rental car. After an exhaustive trip around the island, visiting relatives in Pinar Del Rio, birding the Vinales region, we decided to spend our last 2 days before returning to the USA relaxing at SP, enjoying the food, ocean, pool, etc. I messed up BIG. I made the reservation online, with my US CC, but did not read the fine print, saying we still needed to pay upon arrival in CUC's since we are from the US. We were pretty much tapped out of cash at this point. Zemaira checked us in, reviewed the fine print showing us the CC just HELD our reservation. After a 17.5 hour day starting in Vinales, with hiking, birding in the preserves, then dropping our guide off south of Habana, and finally arriving at sol P at 1030 PM, my wife was about to melt. Zemaira took charge, said she would work on this overnight, handing it off to Eliz Rozenti (another wonderful front desk manager) in the morning, who would communicate with the Spain home office to facilitate. They allowed us to stay the night in our room for the night, eat breakfast, and come back for the answer. The charges went through, as an exception, with the advice to read all future small print, especially if from the US; don't mess up like i did! But you may be lucky to run into two exceptional employees who went over and beyond to help us. The resort had it all: friendly staff in all departments, tasty food, excellent mojitos, helpful beach and pool staff. In addition, there were more species of birds to see on site. Easy to get to from Habana.

"Great Service!"

My family and I stayed March 11-18 in a bungalow. This is my sixth time in Cuba with a number of visits to each Mexico and Jamaica for comparison. As resort amenities go, Sol Palmeras is pretty standard - nice and well maintained but nothing that stands out. It is divided into two adjoining compounds: the main hotel and pool area and an expansive collection of cabanas, which are essentially semi-detatched villas with suite arrangements. We were lucky enough to stay in an ocean-front one, albeit almost at the far end of the resort. The cabanas are numerous and make up a kind of tidy village that reminded me of the artificial towns built by the US during the Cold War to test nuclear weapons in Nevada. The grounds are very tidy and well maintained but there aren't many people walking about which makes it kind of creepy. I think it's the product of a concept design that was built without really thinking it through - I'm sure the artist renditions showed people all over the place socializing in a lively kind of way. But again, well maintained and pretty. Our cabana was very outdated, notably the bathroom. But we didn't care since the place was so clean and well maintained. One thing to note: the cabana we stayed in is rated for three people but we are a family of four. This led to little hitches like finding only three beach towels when we got there, and absolutely no space for a fourth suitcase or clothing. No storage except for a closet in the bedroom. Again, not a big deal. The food was variable, largely in keeping with Cuba's reputation for mediocrity. There are a number of a-la-carte restaurants and unlike other resorts we've stayed in we had NO trouble getting all the reservations we wanted. These are pretty unremarkable. The steak house was totally abismal - the food was terrible and the so called sirloin steak was a cheap cut tenderized with a knife to the point of being hamburger. Kitchen service was slow and the food came cold. Not the waiter's fault. The others were just ok. I'm not sure anybody goes to Cuba resorts for the food experience so no huge disappointment. The main cafeteria had mostly repetitive food options that although varied were pretty bland. Grill cooked fish with no taste or even lemons, the usual breakfast fare, etc. It struck me that they consistently had a hard time keeping up with demand - fruit and things like juice glasses would run out. But the staff were very friendly and accommodating. Highlights? The beach - simply beautiful and very clean. Lots of stuff to do. And the service. Simply great, notably based on our past Cuban resort experiences. Staff were consistently friendly and eager to help. This is what makes Sol Palmeras stand out in my opinion. For example, my 14 yr old son works out with me - he's fit and muscular but the resort gym prohibits anybody younger than 18 from using it. We were looking forward to this father-son experience. The resort manager did not hesitate to make an exception for us. No doubt he'll recognize this example from last week. Thanks! From a service perspective there was only one irritant - we paid for an extended check-out since our flight left late and we wanted to use the day efficiently instead of packing up at noon and then waiting at the end of the day for a common shower room. The front desk clerk charged us, which was fine, but then asked for a 10 CUC per towel deposit, which made absolutely no sense. There was no deposit to begin with and we were told by somebody else just to leave them in the room, which we did. But because we didn't leave the deposit the first front desk lady didn't renew our room cards which meant having to go to the front desk when we were trying to pack up and leave. The towel deposit makes no sense. Manager? You should change this. Other than that the front desk consistently lacked 1CUC bills which made it challenging to tip for routine things like drinks - this should be fixed as it's only the staff that lose out. Other than these things our experience was great, largely owing to the customer service.

"Great vacation"

We stayed at Sol Palmeras in the end of February. Although we booked accidentally (long story) we did not regret. The service is great. Staff is friendly. Food is good. This is our second time in Cuba. Being a vegan family of 3 we are always concerned when we travel if we find enough food choices in a resort. Sol Palmeras did not disappoint - fresh smoothies available in the morning and till late afternoon, pasta, fruits, veggies, fries...

"Excellent service staff. Good resort and vacation with a few things needing improvement."

My two teenage boys (17 and 15) visited March 9 - March 16. We chose this resort as my mother visited their many years ago and I have been to many other resorts in Cuba so thought we would try something different. To the point - Good points -beach -food servers and bars staff everywhere were amazing. I have visited Cuba over 11 times and had stayed at various resorts, I found the service/friendliness of the bartenders and waiter/waitresses to be the best ever. Even the serving staff at the main lobby area...you are all amazing and sorry I didn't personally get all your names...but kudos to you all for always going above and beyond; Nexos rep - you are the sweetest lady ever and this job was your calling.....you were amazing!! A La carte restaurants - Chinese Restaurant - best ever a la carte for us anyway at this resort. Mexican was our 2nd favorite, followed by Steak house. Italian not bad...didn't try seafood so can't rate that. Buffet - average - servers of course were above average Cons Stayed in 1 BDR Bungalow and they really need upgrading. Bathrooms very dated and floors were softer to sleep on than the beds. Pillows were hard as rock. The location was good for us, closer to lobby and walking is always a good thing so no issues on location. As they note, bar only stocked 1 X per week. I would suggest they re-visit this and stock daily. Not just water, but would have been nice to have coffee or tea in the room as well daily. They say if you stay in 1 BDR bungalow you have late check out if available, what they forget to tell you is it cost $$$. We had to pay $7.00 CUC per hour after noon, but that's ok,...it was worth it, I just suggest that they should advertise the cost ahead of time. There was also no private check in or check out as noted for this room category as well so don't expect preferred check in and outs......Also ensure you have $10.00 CUC each each a towel is needed after check out...they give you the deposit back, but trust me it wasn't with incident....They need to do a better job tracking who returns. They told us we didn't need any slips, front desk said we need a slip, finally after 20 min and 3 employees we got out deposits back. I did have a copy of my receipt that I paid, but that didn't matter to them. I suggest you keep the receipt and make the towel person write down on your receipt the # of towels returned and time returned. (if no towel slip/ticket given) They claim Sunwing doesn't give tickets.... Front desk staff - Horrible...you really need to be trained on customer service. Had to wait every time, even with no one else in line, yet 2-3 people along the front desk working. It's like they were WAY more important so we had to wait until they finished talking amongst themselves about their weekend. Now for the topper of Con's....the resorts store on the bottom level. The store that serves the alcohol as there are a few and I didn't get the names. THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF ...... Always check your change back and prices. I went there and the bottle I was going to buy was $32.00 CUC. I went back later that night, they said it was $42.00CUC and no price tag was on there now. The 3 of us clearly saw the earlier price. However, We wanted something for our room so I gave $45.00 CUC and then they said they had no change..being nice, I said keep it. I did ask the next day about the price, they said they had no clue...I did not want to argue, just want to ensure the hotel knows the issue. Then, went a bought a lighter...$1.00 CUC... 2 days later, got another for for a souvenir, she says $2.00 CUC. I said I bought one 2 nights ago for $1.00 CUC and she says it most likely was another type. It was the same lighter....I gave her $5.00 CUC - she gives me back 4 coins. 2 are $1.00 CUC and 2 are $0.25. They try to scam with with giving you quarters vs. the $0.50 coins...we didn't look until well after that we actually only got back $2.50 vs. $3.00. Seems like small change, but that's not the point...the point is she was very untrusting and who knows how many people she cheated out for coins here and there...she needs to be talked to. Overall - the resort was ok...I wouldn't visit it again as I am sure there are nicer resorts, including the other 11 I previously stayed at.
