Sol Palmeras

Over Sol Palmeras

Our favorite

"Wonderful experience at Sol Palmeras"

   07-12-2016
I was a Sol Plameras from November 27 to December 5, 2016. Found the hotel very appealing. Suite was clean and attractive; Food was very good and above all the staff (to include from Managent to Reception) was friendly and professional. My experience has been nothing but excellent.

"Vegan friendly!"

Check in was so easy, course it was just my husband and I. We were on the top (4th floor). Very quiet, even at our bed time 9:30! The view was at the opposite site of the pool ( front side of hotel) as we got to enjoy our morning coffee and watched the traffic, there was a tree that kept us private, you can see the ocean too from there. The bed was so comfortable , very modern room. Breakfast I had their cereal with oats drie fruit and flakes with some hot water on top strawberry sauce , peanut butter and bananas so yummy! I also had some potatoes that were cooked in butter. But you can have their fresh fruits, which I also had which were so good! Lunch frys of course as well as white rice Chickpeas that melted in your mouth , corn cauliflower, salad, lots to choose from. Dinner was pretty much the same as lunch as well as fresh fruit and the chocolate from the fountain was amazing! We went to veradero that's always fun, we also went to Havana which I love, although it was quiet as we went 3 days after Fidel's passing in which they were in morning. No one but tourist were in the streets but all visitors and locals were uunble to play any sports which included their baseball , no dancing, could not by any alcohol, no smiling no music etc ...some private businesses were open but all government buildings were closed. Still our guide (bill) was just amazing, infact when we go back he is going to take us to a ball game! The hotel was amazing, first hotel I have been to in Cuba that the workers didn't have their hand out! But they worked hard to please and we tipped! Right by the pool was a basket ball/vallybayy court so the kids can play and the parents can sit by the pool and watch them, so that's convenient. We go to Cuba spring and fall every year so we pretty much know what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised with sol palmeras, extremely clean super friendly (they go above and beyond) Shout out to Maria in the dinning room and my favourite Able the security guard! Please if u can bring them a gift :)

"Good value"

   06-12-2016
The greatest strength of Sol Palmeras as a resort is its staff. Very patient, very friendly and very helpful. No easy feat when confronted with a bus load of impatient western tourists. Food-wise there is huge choice on offer. The buffet offers a range of different cuisines, many dishes cooked fresh in front of you. Naturally, as the resort caters for hundreds of guests many dishes are mass produced, so don't expect 5* cuisine at the buffet. The buffet is also in interesting cultural experience, if like me you aren't well acquainted with buffet style eating - some people seem to take it on as a challenge!! Aside from the buffet, there are several restaurants to chose from. For evening dining, you need to book a day ahead and you can chose from Chinese, Mexican, Grill or Seafood restaurants. Our favourite was the Mexican, least favourite was the seafood restaurant, largely because it offered a set menu that included a steak for main course - not ideal for pescatarians like me. Food at times can be a little bland, but not unpleasant. We took hot sauce with us as back up, after reading reviews of food in Cuba - it served us well. During the day you can grab a bite from the various food stands dotted around the place, including an ice-cream stand, beach bar, the buffet and our favourite, the hot tub bar. The hot tub bar was a late discovery. It was very quiet and offers freshly made, delicious tuna baguettes as well as burgers, chips and a few other snacks. The resort is clean and well maintained, albeit a little dated. The rooms are a good size and offer all the amenities you would expect. The pools are kept very clean, although there was often a shortage of sun-loungers at busy periods, which was a little frustrating. The pool walls are blue and the paint can rub off on swimwear - just be aware. Also, the music around the pool is very loud and very repetitive - if they played some quieter Cuban music it would be much more enjoyable, but only a small criticism. Bar-wise, there are plenty to chose from and a good selection of drinks. No known brands with the exception of the occasional beefeaters gin. The bar tenders are great - really friendly. Remember to tip - it may be all inclusive, but remember a couple of cucs goes a long way in Cuba. Entertainment at the resort can make it feel a little like a cruise ship. We tended to avoid such events. Instead we opted to stay at the bar, go off the resort, or go to the beach. I would recommend visiting the beach at night - the storms are incredible. On that note, the beach is stunning. Besides the staff, the beach is a highlight. This resort is great value for money, it isn't 5*, but we didn't pay through the nose for that, we got what we paid for and it was a very relaxing trip overall. The staff are great and the location is brilliant. Less than an hour from the airport and around 2 hours to Havana - perfect for a day or overnight trip.

"Disappointing - food and service makes it two star at best"

   05-12-2016
We stayed at the Melia Sol P for a few nights after 10 days travelling elsewhere in Western Cuba - after staying in Casas, private hotels, and government hotels of varying price points I thought we'd experienced a decent sampling of Cuban standard food and board and had prepared my expectations for the resort according. Unfortunately it seems I didn't lower them enough! The physical resort itself and the rooms are decent, by Cuban standards it's well maintained, clean, and put together and the facilities are good; unfortunately this is all negated when the appalling service and food are taken into account. The staff all seem to possess a demeanour of utter misery, I think we saw a single smile (from the ice cream stand lady) during our entire stay. You actually end up being outgoingly chipper just to see if you can get a smile or laugh out of them - to no avail - this obviously is the opposite of how the guest-staff interaction should be. After we were handed our keys and told nothing about the resort (maps, meal options, directions, services?) I went back to the front desk to ask for a quick explanation of the restaurants - I was dismissed with an eyeroll before the staff member picked up the phone mid-sentence, and didn't bother coming back to me. It would have been funny if we hadn't been paying so much. The buffet was relatively typical for what I would expect of a two star resort, this didn't particularly surprise or bother me - what WAS astonishing is how awful the A La Carte restaurants are. Notably worse than the buffet even. We ate at the Chinese and Mexican on different nights, the food quality was awful and the portions genuinely laughable - we had to go to the buffet after each dinner to actually have had enough to eat. Everything tasted as cheap and low quality as humanly possible, even buffet items that are surely hard to mess up (chicken nuggets?!) had the flavour of discarded cardboard. I notice unlike their other resorts Melia branding is almost completely absent from this resort despite their management and ownership - I can only assume this is because the standards are so low they don't want the association. If you want a resort holiday, go elsewhere. This is a two star resort at best and not worth the money.

"1st Time in Cuba, Great Vacation"

   05-12-2016
We were at the Sol Palmeras from Nov.17 to Dec.1, 2016 and enjoyed our 1st visit to Cuba. Great beach and pool area, excellent food, clean and comfortable rooms. The hotel staff were wonderful, especially Maria Ofela Dias Prendes, the Sales Manager, the staff at the Buffet Restaurant - Mabel, Wiskelmen, Diansy, Adys, Jorge Enrique, Ada Nerys, Frank Abel as well as the cooks and Claudia for the sandwiches. The bar staff in the lobby bar were great too. I highly recommend this resort.
