"Not impressed anymore"

On August 31, 2016 I travelled with my friend to Curacao. We had our Jazz tickets in hand and all excited. I had to see Level 42 for the third time :) We got in a bit late (what is new with Insel-Air?) but not that late to be in a bad mood. We checked in with a young lady that to my feeling wasn't really listening or could care less. We went to the room and to my surprise got a king bed while I booked double beds. Back at the Front-desk the young lady informed me that their system does not recognize bed categories?!? I could have booked that but it does not mean that I am getting that? The next day she could check and see if they perhaps had another room available for us but for the night my friend could go on a cot or sleep next to me. I had just paid the full bill upfront so leaving was not an option. Plus with Curacao being busy with the Jazz Festival I doubt it would have been an easy task at that time of day to get another suitable hotel. All in all it took us 45 minutes to get to this result; a cot. (My friend had a bad night of course, as she suffers from her back). The next day we had to wait till after 3PM for a room change. The steps going up to the first floor is broken, the telephone isn't working and the door to the room does not lock/close properly. Maintenance came to check the door and showed us how to manipulate to get it closed. Going in was no problem but I really had no desire to go and deal with the reception again. The surroundings really needed some TLC (tender loving care). It wasn't WAW like before.

"Underrated beauty"

The photos of this place do not give justice to the wonderful atmosphere and romantic ambience of the hotel. Look past the slightly shabby interior and exterior and you start to feel the history of Curacao within the village style complex. Around each corner is another little gem, pool, fountain or statue. We came to Willemstad to get married in a typically beautiful hotel by the beach, but planned to stay in the Kura Hulanda for our first 3 nights, just to experience being in the centre of the town. We fell in love with the hotel and stayed an extra night. The hotel isn't perfect and I believe it is currently being maintained in parts, though part of its charm is the rustic unmodernised buildings and we had fun peering into undeveloped and seemingly derelict rooms. Apart from the previously mentioned beauty, the staff were all very nice and friendly. On top of all this we also had the absolute pleasure of meeting Gina! Gina wears the largest smile behind the reception desk, her knowledge of the island and town is second to none and despite our wedding not being at her hotel, Gina gave us loads of help and advice on where we can find the best deals for everything. We were also very lucky in that we had our last 2 nights in one of the suites, again it had its rustic outdated charm but it was very comfy, spacious and if it had not been too late to change we would have loved to have had our wedding at the Kura Hulanda. One thing I almost forgot, they put on a free bus from the Kura Hulanda in the town to their sister hotel in west punt so that you can spend a day on their beautiful beach there. The next time we come to Curacao we will certainly be staying at the Kura Hulanda and hope that Gina is still there.

"Gorgeous property, fantastic service"

This was the perfect location for our large group to stay. We had 12 people in town for a destination wedding. Each room was different and equally beautiful- antique claw foot tubs, vaulted ceilings, 4 post beds, armoires. Charming restored historic property. The museum on site was fascinating, and I was thrilled to learn so much about the rich history of this island by staying there. The entire property is covered in treasures- statues, historic relics, cobblestone roads, and well-kept gardens and pools. The highlight of staying there was the delightful staff. From the front desk, to the maintenance people, and especially the restaurant/bar/breakfast staff- every need of our group was met in a timely and enthusiastic manner. We had a couple small issues (gas smell in our room when the generator was filled, lightbulb needed changing, wifi was spotty the first day), but the staff's rush to resolve the issues within minutes (even in the middle of the night) quickly eclipsed the concerns. Several nights a week, they offered themed dinners (mongolian wok, indian buffet) with live entertainment in the courtyard. If not for the beauty and history of the island, and the plethora of restaurants and sights within walking distance, you could stay a week here without leaving the hotel. A highlight was Michael Anthony & his drummer, who played everything from Caribbean classics to Motown to modern hits. Michael serenaded us with his saxophone and best Louis Armstrong when he heard we were getting married, and even gifted us a CD of love songs he made for his wife. They also offer a free shuttle to their other property on the beach, which is also gorgeous and well worth the day trip. We did not experience problems with electricity or accessibility that some reviews mention, but I highly recommend giving the professionals that work there the opportunity to address any concerns that may arise. We were made to feel that our comfort and happiness was their pleasure.

"Historic and beautiful place"

Full of details, we take a big room, with a beautiful old wood floor, nice antique bathtub, big wood Windows, and a really nice balcony, it's a big property very well located, because you can go on foot to town trough the bridge, The attention is good, the food is ok

"Dreadful; neglected, tired, unloved & actually somewhat scary! "

I hoped this place would live up to its reviews and claims. It does not! Straight off- not for families with children or anybody with infirmities. Not because of the quaint cobble streets or staircases to some accommodations but because of the outright dangerous and neglected facilities in the complex. Broken tiles, dilapidated staircases, holes in footpaths, dodgy electricity system...need I continue? If your interested in this place for authenticity you'll be disappointed & angry. If you're interested in the museum, stay elsewhere and give up a couple of hours on your visit to Willemsted. This may have been something exciting in its day & the place has so much potential but it's just going back to the mess it was. Discounts for a reason guys! I can give you more information if you need it but - really- why? Oh, ok! Pool out of service whole time. Electricity out - evening and morning. Fitness 'suite' a load of crap...poor, poor service. Kids hiding on the grounds and jumping the fence. Dodgy security guys with tired old dog. Views of bricked up buildings and constant waves of diesel fumes poisoning the air from massive container ships parked opposite. 2 stars- One for the position near town & one for Gina the receptionist.
