"Great location, wonderful setting"

   22-03-2017
Our flight arrived a day earlier than planned, so we needed an extra night's stay on the island. We booked this hotel and were very pleased. The historical setting is wonderful (incredible attention to detail in restoring and preserving the area) and our room was very large. We were just steps from the Queen Emma bridge. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was clean, and the pools were both nice. The on-site restaurant was disappointing, but there are plenty of nearby places to eat. We enjoyed our stay and would consider returning.

"Terrific location"

   21-03-2017
The property of this hotel in very interesting, the location is excellent, and I liked the size of our room (we had the resort deluxe room), but I can only give them 3 stars overall and here’s why. Our room was very large and had many windows, but there was only the view of walls or roofs of other buildings. There wasn’t a balcony or patio, so we used a table in the laneway to sit outside. The Wi-Fi service in the room was terrible, I basically pulled a chair up to the door in order to get a connection. The housekeeping staff’s attention to their duties was hit and miss. As an example, I folded the towels and hung them in order to save the laundry and reuse them, however, the staff took the towels and didn’t replace them. We drank the coffee that was there and no replacement packets were added for the next morning. Most days they would forget something and we had to go to the front office to request towels, washcloths, shampoo, coffee and soap. The bed was nicely made every day and the room looked tidy however, they really need to address more ‘deep cleaning’ on an ongoing basis as the dust bunnies on the top of the baseboards was out of control and the dirt on the window louvers was very bad. We only ate dinner at the main restaurant once because the food wasn’t very good, the beef was tough, the chicken chewy, and they only served us our appetizers; after what seemed like an eternity I asked about our main – whoops, they forgot to give the cook the order. We didn’t take the breakfast plan and I’m glad we didn’t. After just one breakfast we realized it was very expensive for a very lack luster buffet and didn’t go back again. We did eat at the museum restaurant once, the server was lovely and the food was much better, but at $37 US for two sandwiches and 2 club sodas seemed very expensive to me, however, it tasted very good. The slave museum was very interesting, the content over all was excellent and I highly recommend you visit, but make sure you allow yourselves time to really explore it because we spent 2.25 hours reading the articles, stories and viewing the artifacts. The management should consider allotting some of the entrance fees to be put toward the upkeep and maintenance of the exhibits because some of them need to be freshened up as the sun, salt air, and dust have left their mark. We didn’t use the pools, but my husband enjoyed the sauna. We also used the business center to print out our boarding passes and that was convenient too. I did find that of the staff employed with the hotel, the people at the front desk were the most helpful and friendly overall, having arranged car rentals, taxis, and our return to the airport efficiently and effectively. Overall I think the humidity and salt air does take its toll on the buildings, many in the complex had a lot of peeling plaster, but Kura Hulanda’s grand old buildings are “owning it” and wearing their age with pride. It is a nice quiet spot so close to the busy downtown.

"Unique concept, but superior rooms below average 3 star quality"

   02-03-2017
I booked a superior room with breakfast at this village because I wanted to visit Willemstad before I would get to Wespunt. I loved the idea of staying in a part of the old city that was restored to become a Hotel. Dining or having a cocktail on the central patio felt like going back in time, truly amazing. I did spend a lot of time just walking through the alleys, gardens and pools. Remarkable, really. The village also hosts a museum, but there is an entrance fee, even for guests staying there. The problem with such a project is the constant need of investment it requires, and it does show the (unfortunate) lack of it. This is a bit like having a ferrari but no money for gas. My superior room was simply average and in my opinion not worth the over 200 euros I paid for it. But it did have a nice terrace. Do not make the same mistake I did, book a suite without breakfast, the cost is probably the same and they do look special, like they should, in such an amazing place. Breakfast was good, but had to wait for most items to be replenished. Also had dinner there but found the quality to be a bit average, specially when we found an amazing restaurant round the corner - using the museum exit - with great food, amazing views of Punda and paid half the price. I do suggest having a cocktail at Jacob's Terrace (main patio) and simply relax... and these are fairly priced! Wifi worked great and staff was friendly. Location is perfect for visiting Otrabanda and Punda. Do stay here, but not on a superior room, and skip breakfast.

"Truly a delight😊💕"

   01-03-2017
Ever since this hotel opened I thought about staying there if I were ever in Curacao🇨🇼. Needless to say that my expectations were met and what made it truly wonderful were the employees at the front desk, and the girls working at Jacob's Terrace. Scarlett gave me very useful tips for my next trip to Curacao. I also need to give a shout out to your security officer Kenneth👮🏽. Who just made my day when my tour bus forgot to pick me up😔. The hotel itself can be described as a small village with all these little houses 🏘which are actually the rooms. Each room is furnished with antique furniture, making anyone feeI royalty-like👸🏼. All rooms have a small fridge, coffee pot (coffee incl.), hair dryer, and even a small sewing kit. There are two pools, if you prefer the beach 🌊 though the hotel provides a shuttle. Room service is available, and if you need to print there's a computer and printer available in the business center free of charge. Location wise it's 👌🏼. Located in Otrabanda there are plenty of shops to choose from, if that's your thing. Otherwise head over to 'the swinging lady', and you will be in Punda in no time. Specials: every Sunday there an Indian buffet, Wednesday's Creole buffet, and Happy Hour on Friday (band incl.) Last, thank you Kura Hulanda for having. 😘 Vivienne

"Attractive and historical"

   01-03-2017
I picked the hotel because it was part of a Jet Blue getaway package to Curaçao. The pictures were OK but the actual hotel was much nicer and more attractive in person. It is more of a compound with courtyards and paths and and trees and bushes and various rooms scattered throughout. It took me several days to discover all the nooks and crannies, sculpture gardens and little building with historical artifacts Tables were scattered everywhere. The word "hotel" did not do the place justice. It is very well-designed, especially if you want privacy. Apparently this place was designed in 1855 and added on and developed throughout the years The centerpiece is a courtyard with many tables where you can sit and order drinks and lunches dinners or late night snacks. There is a separate adjacent building which houses a breakfast bar ($18 a pop, one reason I gave the hotel only 4 stars) there is also a bar near the entrance which is open at 10AM and partly intended for visitors to the Slave Museum..also on the hotel grounds. There is also a spa, fitness room, and business center. My favorite feature was a small two-level swimming pool with a boulder motif and an actual waterfall you could swim up to and get a water massage. The staff was unfailingly polite, friendly and helpful. I saw and participated in many conversations with wait staff....mostly young women and a few young men and as they became familiar with you and vice versa it felt easy. Wait time might have been longer at times than ideal but hey.......this is island time. Relax and look at a palm tree. However, as a solo traveler, I have to admit I didn't find the same friendliness among the guests. Perhaps it was the layout, perhaps it was the fact that most people were Dutch, but I have been in other places where intermingling happened more, was even facilitated by management. But even though the layout should have led to informality I got in few conversations with other guests nor went on activities with any. In this respect it really felt like a "hotel." The desk staff, while friendly and responsive if you asked them questions, pretty must just booked excursions, told you about rental car deals, etc. Some information was good; some wasn't. Not really complaining....I guess I am comparing it to more of an informal B&B. I don't like feeling so clearly like a "tourist" with social stratification, and an assumption that I am there to spend big bucks, but that is just a fact and I imagine most people who stay there are fine with that. And the prices of hotel food were quite expensive I thought. And the food was decent but that's all. Really just a nice way of not having to go out and deal with a restaurant. One other minus was WiFi didn't work in my room. One final plus for me was the hotel felt totally protectedbut was just steps from the main square and the teeming life of real island people. As well as tourists. A playground for kids, street food stands, Batidos.... it was all there 30 seconds after you left the hotel. All in all a recommendation!
