"Family vacation "

Had to wait until I got home and relaxed to write a review. From the moment you get to the resort you are greeted with warm and welcoming smiles from those at the front desk, both Damion Rowe and Nikiesha Soares were amazing and helpful as well as the others at the front desk. The property is slightly older but we'll kept; hats off to the "behind the scenes" people who keep up the property. I also can't forget the many smiling staff of the restaurants(good food by the way) and side shops such as Brianna at the crepe shop, and Sasha at Neptune's. I have so many wonderful people that made my family's visit amazing. From Jason at the swim up bar and Najee at the Venetian, to Chevy at the burger joint(can't remember the name of the place). Also Anthony at Le Parisian, and last but not least both Raymond and Presley; amazing staff!!! I look forward to returning to Beaches!!!

"Family Vacation"

Was there from June 17-24 with 14 family members. 7 adults and 7 kids from 9-15 years old. Fabulous time. Service was excellent. Accomodations excellents. Food was great. Would go again in a heartbeat! Watch out for the prices on the photos. Very expensive. Just ignore the photo folks. OR don't buy any of their photos. Otherwise, was a fantastic time. The facilities were first rate. Raymond was out of this world as a waiter. Rshane was great with the activities. All the service folks were first rate. Ignore the comments from others about this resort being "dated", it is first class. Lots to do. Drinks were wonderful. Couldn't be happier. Just don't buy their expensive photos.

"Needs major updates"

Beaches and Sandals always market themselves as the best in the all-inclusive business, but from what I have seen on my recent trip, Beaches Ocho Rios needs to make some serious improvements in order to maintain this title. I'll start with the good about this property...the staff. They are all amazing, energetic and just fun to be around. They take their entertainment seriously, and are proud of what they offer. They should be. The pool area is also nice, but it can get quite crowded, but there never seems to be a the standard jockeying for chairs in the morning. Now for the areas that need improvement...the buildings themselves. Much of this property looks to be falling apart and concrete building resemble more of a Jamaican prison than the do a luxury resort. The food is average, at best. For the amount of money you spend at an all-inclusive resort, one would expect a multitude of options and care for the food, but every steak, chicken or seafood you order will come out over cooked. Just know it and expect it. We have stayed at other Sandals resorts, and other all-inclusive resorts (Excellence, Ibererostar and others), and this one just lacked a care for how they prepared food. The menus at the restaurant were all limited, and the variety was not what I had hoped for. While the pool is nice, as is the water park, the beach itself is lacking. The sand is hard with rocks all over the place. The water is filled with seaweed so if you are expecting crystal clear Caribbean water, don't come here. The beach itself is small...maybe 150 yards of sand that you can walk on. Lastly, if your package includes a free catamaran and Dunns River tour, you MUST book it when you check in. We were never told this and tried too book on our 2nd day of the week long trip, but were then told it was sold out. They offered no help or apology to find a way to make it work, or offer another tour in its place. Needless to say, but it would take a lot of changes to have me come back here.

"Perfect wedding and wonderful staff!"

We stayed at Beaches for 5 nights for our wedding and then moved over to Sandals Ochi for our honeymoon. Overall the trip and wedding was amazing! I'll give a thorough review for those interested including some small critiques. Our travel agent bought the Club Mobay for us, and that truly was a nice gift. We were greeted at the airport and taken right to the front of the line like VIP. It made us feel really special and was a nice treat. We had others in our crowd that didn't have the Club Mobay and it took them about an hour to get through immigration. We waited for them in the Sandals lounge and had snacks and Red Stripe, so it wasn't a problem. After that we were ushered to an air conditioned bus and taken to the resort. We made a restroom stop on the way. It took almost two hours for us to get to the resort, but we looked at the scenery and talked with the driver. We were greeted immediately upon getting out of the bus and they took our luggage and walked us to the front desk. They seated us for check in and brought us champagne. I had booked the cheapest room, and we knew we would get an upgrade with our wedding package, but we got was a nice surprise - an ocean front concierge room! It had a beautiful view. They also upgraded our family (4 people) to an ocean front room next to us, but they gave them a king bed instead of two doubles and a pull out couch. They said we had booked a king room for them, but we definitely booked two doubles. With that said, my family was perfectly happy with ocean front, so we asked if they could bring cots for the two kids and that worked out just fine. The cots were basically twin beds, and the room was plenty large. Both rooms were in French building, and we enjoyed the location and view. It is loud at night as some other reviewers have commented, but I don't think any room on the resort could escape that. Luckily these rooms did have a second door to close off between the stairs and bedroom, and that helped tone down the noise. The concierge does come with a stocked refrigerator, access for a concierge to plan your trip, and room service, but we didn't utilize those services much. We really got special treatment with having our wedding there. We received some type of surprise in our room every day including fresh fruit, chocolates, champagne, rose petals, towel animals, and a beach bag as a wedding gift. All of the food was very good. We ate at the French restaurant, Italian Restaurant, rehearsal dinner, and reception for the dinners. Everything was delicious. My family also ate at Neptunes after we left and said that was their favorite restaurant. Lunch was the BBQ place or buffet and everything was good at those places as well. We had a 12 year old and 14 year old in our group, and they chose not to participate in the kids camps because they would have been in separate camps. They mostly swam at the pool, beach, or waterpark. They also tried out the Xbox lounge and glass bottom boat and enjoyed those activities. The staff was amazing at Beaches. There was bar (we referred to as "the cool bar") above the pier and away from the crowds, and we really enjoyed talking to the bartender, Chris, there. My wedding planner, Audie, and the rest of the wedding crew did a really wonderful job with our wedding. Shantal did my hair and makeup, and she did an outstanding job. One theme I noticed when I called, moved from Beaches to Sandals, booking excursions, confirming excursions, honeymoon dinner, etc, was that the Sandals organizational ability is not great. Their actual execution is fantastic, but finding your reservation (or literally whatever it is you might be dealing with electronically) is a bit of a mess. We encountered this with literally every single electronic transaction with the exception of check out from Sandals on our last day. It's like their systems aren't connected. So, if you book one thing through a wedding group or sandals registry, they may have trouble finding it in another system. So, I will say this, get everything in writing with a confirmation or they may have trouble finding it. I also wouldn't utilize a travel agent again. Don't get me wrong, my travel agent did a great job. I just wouldn't use one because I felt it was easier for them to find everything if I booked it straight through them. Lastly, I'll talk about the wedding for those of you considering it. I only have three complaints. The first is that we were told we would have our choice of the wedding locations because they only held one event at a time, and that turned out not to be the case. The second is that my wedding coordinator had not received a lot of my pre-planning documents from the wedding planner such as our reception planning document, ceremony wording, and seating chart. Luckily I had emailed all of that stuff to my phone before going on the trip and I was able to forward it while there, but I would have been pretty upset had that not been the case. Last, I was told I would be able to arrange and pay for transportation from my Sandals guests to Beaches for the day of the wedding, and we were unable to do that. Honestly, I had my doubts about how the wedding would go based on those things. It also rained the entire day of the wedding, so we had to change locations. I asked that it still be partially outdoors and we use umbrellas going down the aisle, and they were able to accommodate that. Despite my doubts and the rain, the wedding and reception could not have been better. Everything was perfect. We had a violinist for the music and it sounded great, and we used a DJ at the reception. That also turned out great. The photographer also did a wonderful job. Honestly, I have no complaints about the execution of the wedding and reception. Based on that, I would absolutely recommend a wedding there. Your family and friends will probably give you a hard time because it is costly for those attending, but if you decide on destination wedding, it was pretty perfect. Just a few comments on the difference between Beaches and Sandals Ochi...The service was a lot better at Beaches. I don't know why that would be the case, but it was a very noticeable difference. The service wasn't bad at Sandals, it was just another level at Beaches. With that said, we actually liked Sandals better. The grounds were so beautiful and lush. The food was also better at Sandals. Again, the service isn't bad at either and the scenery is beautiful either way you go, but if I were to go back, it would most likely be to Sandals. I also think Sandals had prettier wedding spots, but you can't go wrong either way. We chose Beaches because we wanted family to be able to come, and I think that was the right choice for us.

"Great family vacation!!!"

We just returned from a great trip to Beaches in Ocho Rios! Our family included my wife and I and two teenage boys (ages 14 and 18). We went primarily because both of the boys wanted to learn to scuba dive. I can not say enough positive things about the staff of the Aqua Center. Patrick, Mervyl, Brian, Yogi, Wayne and Cpt. Roger were amazing! From the introductory class experience with Mervyl, the staff were attentive with the boys and worked hard to ensure that they had a great first experience. On our second dive Yogi took both boys and I on our own private swim around the reef while the other people on the boat went as a group. What can you say about service like that! Cpt. Roger went out of his way to make sure that the boys and I got on each "student dive" at 11:30 regardless of how many new students were getting trained that day. One day they even added an extra dive trip to accommodate us! ... and the diving was great ... coral, fish, turtles, barracuda, lobster, cuttle fish, skates, etc. On to the other things important to teenage boys ... the water park was great. We spent a lot of time trying to match the distance on that viral video of the guy shooting out of the green slide. None of us made it to the far edge of the pool. The boys had the technique but not the weight. I had the weight but not the technique :-) The staff at the park were great too. They knew the boys by the second day and we had a great time bantering with them! And ... the group activities! There were a couple of guys whose names I unfortunately did not catch who spent all day organizing water polo and volleyball games in the main pool which both of my boys thoroughly enjoyed. Food ... the whole family enjoyed the food scene. The morning buffet accommodated early divers and late risers with a daily omelette station. A couple of tips ... corn fritters are only served on Saturdays ... load up! Plantains are only available when the local farmers have them ... if you see them, eat a lot :-) Both were favorites of the boys. The sit down restaurants were all great. Our favorites were the Out of the Blue "pop up" restaurant (best views and evening breezes) which had great Caribbean fare and the French restaurant. Again, the staff make this resort something special. The La Parisienne staff including Chris, Anthony, and especially Laceyon (I hope your party went well) were outstanding! Finally ... teenage boys can eat ... and eat ... and eat. Kimberly in the Creperie kept them filled up after diving, in between meals, and late at night! I wish I could remember the name of the woman who made the smoothies in the Creperie ... they were the best! The ginger root is a winner :-) I read a LOT of reviews before we went here. To be honest, I read a lot more of the negative reviews than the positive ones because I wanted to know what people didn't like. The biggest complaints in my opinion revolved around people's expectations and orientation on life (glass half full or glass half empty). If you are looking for something that could be better I'll bet you can find it. For example, if you read some of these reviews I would agree ... Jamaica might not be the place to order a steak ... try some jerk chicken or seafood! On the other hand, if you are on vacation and looking to find sunshine even while it is raining in Jamaica you will have "no problem" doing so :-) To all the staff at Beaches ... THANK YOU for making our week something special that we will always remember!
