"OMG IT WAS AWESOME !!!"

   22-11-2017
Stayed for one night two days, wish it was longer, the property was beautiful, workers were real nice, the food was excellent, they had enough activities daily to keep you busy. More than enough restaurants to choose from. All rooms have ocean view. All the bars had top shelf liquor.. the over the water bar was my fave. I cant wait to go back.

"Can't wait to come back!!!"

My husband and I just returned from this resort this past weekend, we visited for our honeymoon. It was the 1st time that we had ever done an all inclusive resort. We had such an amazing experience we have decided to make it a yearly trip to do a tropical all inclusive. We stayed in the Dutch village which was the quiet village it was very central. Quiet like we liked it to sleep and relax on the beach. When we wanted to have fun at the pool we visited the French pool where they had music playing and their was always a fun group of people. Then, we were also very close to the over water bar with the hammocks to hangout in. And there was one of our favorite bar tenders, Hyatt. He was awesome he kept the bar so clean to help keep the bees away for his guest. He also was very social and helped learn some of the different drinks. Whenever we didn't know what drink we wanted we would just got to Hyatt and say we are in the mood for this flavor and he would whip something right up. on the topic of bartenders we had 2 other phenomenal bar tenders Glendon and Roshane. Both of these guys were awesome and social and helped us have a great time. Roshane was at the main pool bar and he made awesome drinks! He was such a sweet guy he really made my husband and I feel welcome and then he would connect guests together so it was like one big party. Then Glendon was the bartender we always went to in the evening after dinner where the party was. He was awesome! He really knew how to get people hyped up. The food at the resort was absolutely awesome. Breakfast Lunch and Dinner their were so many options you never got sick of what they had. It was very high quality food, worth every penny spent. The alcohol they use is also high quality alcohol not just cheap unknown brands. Then the cherry on top of the trip was the entertainment staff Doblin was new to the facility and he helped make our trip the absolute best. He really made us feel at home. He took us to lunch and helped share some of his information on the Jamaican culture and where he comes from. I plan to keep in contact with him because my husband and I want to go back so that we can visit him! He was so entertaining reminded me of Kevin Hart. The beaches were absolutely beautiful but that's seen in the pictures.

"4 Couples and one heckuva great time!"

   21-11-2017
Just got back from SSC and had a great time. Love the layout of this resort. It has character. The staff is very nice and they are everywhere! Sometimes it seemed like there were more staff than guests. Sunrises over the mountains and sunsets over the water were gorgeous. Shout outs to some of our favorite staff like Nelson, Randy, Koil and Tevar and Shemisha. So many things we worried about before the trip just didn't turn out to be a big deal. I think some mountains are made out of molehills. For example, for a couple of days they were replacing the tile around the French pool's hot tub. If you want a nice place to stay it needs to be kept up on a regular basis. No big deal. We had a few meals where the food got mixed up. Not really worth getting excited about. In my opinion if you want the absolute best service you don't go to an all-inclusive property. My expectation was for "really good" service and food and that's what we got. It was wonderful. Another example is the drive to get there. I've read a lot of complaints about it. We loved it. We felt like it was an excursion in itself. We got to see the natural beauty of the mountains of Jamaica and an up close look at how the people live, shop, dine and interact. It was just another amazing part of the trip to us. Visiting this resort was a great experience for the 8 of us.

"Wonderful location and lovely people"

Having had a not so good experience at Emerald Bay, and having read some of the reviews for SSC we were slightly concerned as to how our holiday would be. It was fantastic - so good for the first time in a long while we wanted to stay a few more days. The journey from MoBay is OK - the drivers do their best to make it as smooth as possible as it is a bit bumpy in places, but not all of it. Because of our flight times, it was dark on the way there but coming back we saw the scenery - quite dramatic. We stayed in the Dutch village which was so peaceful. The French village and the main pool are where all the main activities take place, but because of the way the resort is designed, you just don't hear it at the Dutch pool or on the beach around it. Thanks to all the crew and bar staff at the pool who were really friendly. We had a third floor room which had great views of the pool, beach and the sunsets. (we originally had a 2nd floor room which had an adjoining door (?) and it sounded like our neighbours were in with us! Concierge were very speedy and efficient at moving us ). Housekeeping staff were really good and kept us supplied in Tetley tea bags. Well done Sandals for at last providing a kettle in the room. So much better than trying to heat water in the coffee maker!! One of the really good things about this resort is that you don't have to book for any of the restaurants - and we never had any problems getting a table. The food was excellent. Special mention to Jasmine's and Roberto ( The beef satay and thai green curry are fantastic) , Schooners for the food and views and Eleanor's. We put off going to Eleanor's until the last night, as the descriptions on the menu put me off slighly (not sure why now) but we saw Trinidadian Lamb Curry on the menu, and gave it a go. Wish we had earlier - the food was amazing. Beautifully presented, with lovely glassware, and again great service (Talita I think). We ate outside and had the benefit of the violinist which really added to the atmosphere (all the live music was good). Bayside breakfast and lunch were excellent with a good variety. Never ate there in the evening as we don't like buffet meals in the evening. The beach is absolutely beautiful. The guys keep it really clean and there are always plenty of beds and shades. We had a few rainy days at the beginning of our trip which meant the sea was a bit churned up, but once the weather settled, it was so clear. Never saw a single sea urchin except on the reef and there are plenty of gaps to walk around the sea grass!! The staff are fantastic - very polite and friendly and always take the time to answer any questions. Couple of minor gripes The dress code - or lack of it in the evening. I really don't want to go to a bar in the evening and see people still in swim wear. But that's a personal thing. We are returning guests (6 Sandals holidays) but did not receive an invite to the dinner until we went in to query our points (also a mix-up but now finally sorted) and they mentioned it. However, we did go and it was extremely good - food was excellent and Adrian (GM) was a great table host - thank you. Now looking forward to Barbados :)

"Eight Great Nights"

   19-11-2017
Eight Great Nights First, a shout-out to our amazing travel agent – Nancy Finn at Island Getaways (reach out to us if you can't find her online). This woman knows her Sandals and is an amazing resource! She is right in our own backyard, but I know she works with folks from all over the world. The GM and the Loyalty Manager at South Coast both had really nice things to say about her as well. We stayed at Sandals South Coast for 8 nights in October. We have been visiting Sandals for over 20 years, with 14 trips to Jamaica. Previously we spend many nights at Dunn’s River prior to its closing. This was our first visit to South Coast. It was recommended to us by friends who had recently stayed there. Airport arrivals and ride to resort: We chose to use Club MoBay for both arrival and departure. If you arrive on a large flight or when many flights are arriving, you will want to take advantage of the expedited processing they offer, otherwise you may be waiting up to an hour in line for immigration. Also, if this is your first time traveling internationally, they will walk you through the entire process, from immigration to baggage claim to customs. When you are waiting for your transportation, they will also serve you a cool beverage and some snacks. The ride to the resort is an hour and a half, with narrow roads that can be pretty bumpy. We arranged for a private car service through Sandals, as we heard many horror stories. The private car was very nice and probably saved us about a half hour of waiting for additional bus passengers. Our driver, Kavier, had a cooler with beer, wine and soda along with a plate of snacks for us. It was a very nice trip in a very nice car. We felt it was worth the cost to save some wait time. The road is a little rough as you get up into the hills, but even if you take the bus, the drivers are all very good and you do not need to worry about your safety. Resort arrival: We were greeted with a cool towel and whisked away to the Club Sandals lounge (so fast that I missed my welcome champagne :). Our butler quickly arrived to show us to our room. We booked a butler level room on the fourth floor of the Italian Village. We were checked in quickly in our room (I believe that is a benefit of being Diamond level members). Room: The rooms in the Italian Village have been recently remodeled, so our suite was beautiful. A separate living area with a gorgeous view of the ocean from the patio. The bedroom was well appointed and the bed very comfortable. We never watch TV while on vacation, but there were two new, large flat screen TVs in the suite. The bathroom was also brand new with a giant soaking tub and a separate shower with multiple shower heads. If you view the pictures of this room on the Sandals website, it appears that the tub is right in the middle of the bedroom. This is not the case – the bathroom is well separated from both the living room and the bedroom. The only minor complaint we had is that there are very few places to hang a towel or anywhere to stow toiletries in the bathroom. Butler Service: We choose the butler rooms for two reasons: they have the best ocean views and we enjoy the butler service. I like having someone take care of everything, so we can just relax. Our butlers Romaine and Claudius were awesome. Always had a smile (and usually a beverage!). Whatever we asked for, they took care of. They even packed us a cooler the day we went on an excursion. Beach and Pools: We prefer to spend our time on the beach, but we did spend some time in the pools. There are three large pools on the property – two with swim up pool bars and one quiet pool with no bar (but there is a small bar just outside the pool area). The pools were always clean and well maintained and the temperature in pool was quite comfortable. It was really too hot to go into any of the hot tubs, but they also looked very nice. It seems that most people want to spend time in the pools, but there always seemed to be chairs available. The beach is about 1.5 miles long, but because of the construction of the over the water bungalows, the furthest third is blocked off so that you cannot walk the whole stretch. The beach is very nice and wide. The beach and ocean here are not like the white sand/blue water beaches of Emerald Bay in Great Exuma. The beach is more of a beige sand and the water is a little more gray. The water is also not very clear, but it is very warm. The beach does have sea grass but they clean it up every morning. Because the water is a little murky and there is sea grass in the ocean, you definitely need to bring water shoes. As other reviews mentioned – there are sea urchins. There are signs all over the property explaining this, yet we still met several people that had stepped on sea urchins barefoot. You can buy water shoes at the resort if you forget them, so you have no excuse. Near the main dock and the water sports area the ocean floor is really inconsistent, with big holes and drops. As you move further down the beach toward the over the water bungalows, the floor improves and smooths out. Water Sports: The team does a great job accommodating requests for water-skiing, tubing (go on it with four people – it is more fun than two), sailing. There is plenty of equipment like kayaks and paddle boards available. A special shout out to Randy from Watersports, who took me out on a Hobie cat ride when my husband was not feeling well. He gave me a great trip to see the bungalows under construction and even made a ‘bar run’ stop on the beach so that I could jump off and get a beverage! Grounds: Beautiful! Great for walking along the beach or along all the pathways throughout the property. Lovely fountains and flowers everywhere. Yes, the main piazza is all tile – so you do need to watch your step if it is wet. Also, the cats. Lots of them. But they are all pretty friendly and mostly stay out of your way unless you invite them over to be petted. Even though these are feral cats, they are very friendly – especially if you have a treat for them. Mostly they play their cat games and stay out of the way of people. The sports area has new tennis courts, a fitness center, squash courts (?) and a half basketball court. Spa: Only did one small treatment. The spa is small but nicely appointed. Food: Breakfast buffet has a great selection, as well as a juice bar and omelet stations (hint: there are actually multiple omelet stations – everyone tends to wait at the first one ). If you sit outside, watch out for the birds – they will jump on your table and take food right off your plate! Eleanor’s serves a sit-down breakfast as well – the menu is rather limited but it is nice if you like to have someone serve you. If you have a room that provides room service, the room service breakfast is also very good. For lunch, there are three ala-carte options and one buffet at Bayside. We did not eat at Bayside for lunch, but the buffet looked really good. Schooners has bar-type food: burgers, quesadillas, hot dogs, wings. Pretty good. Neptune’s also offers wraps and paninis. I especially liked the gyro wrap. They also have curly fries. Giuseppe’s has good pizza and it is a nice break from the heat to eat indoors. You can also order your pizza to go to take to the beach or pool. There is also the jerk shack – where the jerk chicken is really good – get the hottest sauce. For dinner, we tried most of the restaurants. I will run through them from our favorites on down: Sushi on the Sand: By far our favorite restaurant. Great appetizers, soups and rolls. The service is excellent – very quick (probably because they are always so busy). The restaurant manager (I am so sorry, I forgot his name) is excellent. Jasmines: Pan-Asian cuisine. Also a top favorite. Once again, the general manager, Roberto was key to the restaurant. The first evening we dined there, they were a little busy and he rolled up his sleeves and helped deliver meals and make sure everyone was happy. Neptune’s/Schooners: Both are seafood focused and have great outdoor seating. All the food was good. Schooners has a good grilled lobster tail as well. Eleanor’s: This one seems to be a favorite of other reviewers, but it just didn’t really wow us. Nothing wrong, just was not one of our favorites. We did not dine at Bayside, as we do not care for the Caribbean version of French food. Our experience at Giuseppe’s for dinner was unfortunate. It was our last evening and we decided to give it a try. After waiting nearly an hour to be served our soup (which was barely tepid), we looked around and noticed most of the other people in the restaurant had not yet been served their main courses. The couple next to us said ‘oh, yeah, they are kind of slow here’. Maybe we were spoiled by the service at the sushi and Asian restaurants, but after an hour of waiting we walked out. Maybe just a bad day for them, but not a great experience for us. Our butler came to the rescue with some sandwiches and then we went out to the sushi restaurant for some ‘desert’ rolls. The manager did call that evening to try to apologize, but claimed we had only been waiting a half hour, which was not correct, but it still seems kind of long, doesn’t it? Beverage and bars. They have a decent selection of call and top shelf liquors available, but they do not have everything at every bar. I am a wine drinker, and the wines have improved very much. They are not going to please a wine snob, but they are much better than when we first started going to Sandals. If there is a top shelf liquor you absolutely must have, pick some up in duty free on your way to Jamaica. Especially if you want a nice bottle of champagne – the prices for sparkling wine are a little higher than what you would expect in a restaurant. The wines on the managers wine list are a bit pricier than you would see in a restaurant in the States, but that is to be expected . Latitudes bar: A great concept, but the execution needs work. This is a beautiful bar on the water with hammocks over the water and fire pits along the pier. Every time we visited, it felt under stocked and understaffed. Our first night we wanted to stop for a cocktail before dinner, and they had an extremely limited selection of better and gin and vodka for martinis. When we tried to stop for an after dinner drink, there was very little selection. This bar has the potential to really be a fantastic signature bar (if anyone remembers the tree bar at Dunn’s River and the amazing bartender who worked there – Uton), but they need to step it up and make it more of a cocktail bar in the evening. Pool bar service: This would be my one major complaint at this property. My husband and I both waited tables and bar-tended through college, so we know what good service is. We also recognize that it is a slower pace in Jamaica and the bartenders are probably not encouraged to serve drinks too rapidly to avoid over-serving. However, our experience has been that if you are older than about 30 or 35, you are pretty much invisible to the staff. They also do not seem to have an understanding of serving people in the order they approach the bar, not just serving the people who are directly in front of them. Here is the perfect example. Mid-afternoon at the main pool bar. It wasn’t terribly crowded and when we arrive almost everyone had a cocktail in front of them. There were two bartenders, a girl and a guy. They were both working on beverages at the front of the bar for the last remaining folks. We took two empty stools at the bar on the side and sat with our hands on the bar (no cups or drinks in our hands). We thought ‘great, after finishing those people, they will be able to serve us’. The bartenders definitely saw us, as they walked past several times to get ingredients. But they just stayed at the front of the bar and kept serving people that swam up after we had arrived. Finally, there was no one left to serve but us. The guy bartender went over to the sink to start washing glasses with a member of the entertainment staff – it looked like they were running low. The girl bartender walked up to us, looked at us (through us?), turned around, picked up an empty bottle of scotch and left the bar to get a new bottle (because apparently scotch is an extremely popular drink at 2:00 in the afternoon when it is 90 degrees). We did not get served until the male bartender finished washing the glasses. Similar experience at the other pool bar as well. Unless you stood directly in front of a bartender you could not get a drink. We remedied this by going to the bar that is just outside the quiet pool. It is set up so that you pretty much have to wait in line for service, but at least you get served in turn. The bar service at the bars near the restaurants was always good, so it was odd to see such a difference. Perhaps they train the new bartenders at the pool bars. Excursions: Since we have been to Jamaica a lot, we only did one excursion – that was the ATV tour. It was really fun and very well run. JamWest is the company that handles that tour and they have very nice, clean air conditioned transportation with a really lovely facility. There are other things you can do there like zip lining and water slides. The staff there was very friendly and accommodating. Just remember, non-Sandals staff expect to be tipped. No one was overtly demonstrative about it, but make sure to take that into account when going on an excursion. Loyalty desk: You really do get the very best deal if you pre-book with the Loyalty desk on property – 10 to 12% additional off of any published rates. We did our homework ahead of time and were pleasantly surprised that it is really a better deal. You also have tremendous flexibility with the booking. I would recommend going earlier in the week, as it gets busier as folks are getting near the end of their stays. Despite a couple of bumps, all in all it was a very good stay. It may very well be our new favorite Jamaican property (just wish there was golf nearby).
