"Our first Sandals Experience. Very Good, not Great!"

My fiance and I decided to take a trip for March break this year. It was a compromise, because I personally don't enjoy all inclusive resorts all that much. The main reason, is that I'm a huge foodie, and find that all-inclusive food is never great. Anyhow, my fiance loves all inclusive resorts. They are her favorite type of trip. Don't ask me why ;). So we decided that we should spend a bit more money on this trip, and try a luxury all-inclusive resort, where hopefully we can both be happy. We heard good things about the Sandals brand, specifically Sandals South Coast and were sold. So we booked 7 days at the resort. Our trip started after clearing customs at the airport in Montego Bay. We got to stay in the Sandals lounge at the airport. Where we could get beer, soft drinks, and snacks while we waited for transportation. It was a great perk, and a good start to the trip. The trip to the resort is a bit long, so packing some beer in our carry on bag was a good idea for the trip. Especially since our driver was driving like he'd just robbed a bank. Throwing caution to the wind Everytime he'd blindly pass anyone on the long two-lane highway we used to get to the resort. We didn't see most of it, because we were in the back of the van, and had people in front of us. But the people in the front were terrified the whole trip, and we caught glimpses of why. One of the couples sitting up front made a joke of it, saying that the entire trip felt like an amusement park ride. Our advise. Make sure you pack some liquid courage for the trip. When we got there the staff was super friendly, as they took us on a tour of the grounds before showing us to our rooms. It's definitely a top notch property. From it's beautiful gardens, inviting pool areas, loads of restaurants, scenic over water lounge areas, and top notch fitness facilities, the grounds are very impressive. We were staying in the French Village, and the rooms there were surprisingly small, and very outdated. The balcony was tiny, and the bathroom was very tight to use for 2 people. We asked to be upgraded and were quoted $100 to upgrade to the Dutch village. But there was nothing available at the time. We decided to wait it out, and a bad/good??? stroke of Fortune had us upgraded to the Italian Village later on in the trip. The Italian Village is the newest renovated area of the resort, and also the area closest to the main pool, the cabaret, and most of the restaurants. The rooms in the Italian Village are fantastic. Very well updated, bigger balconies, and a lot bigger bathrooms, with a soaking tub. They stock these rooms with beer and alcohol as well, something the French village doesn't offer. It was a very generous upgrade indeed. However, the reason we got the upgrade was because my fiance stepped on a sea urchin on the beach at the hotel. And when we turned to the hotel to help, the nurse on-site wouldn't even look at her foot, and immediately said that they'd need to bring the doctor in. She didn't offer any suggestions about treating the foot or anything. The doctor would cost us $300 just to show up, and then he would assess additional costs when he saw the foot. We decided to take care of the foot ourselves after doing some research... (Soaking the foot in vinegar, and using tweezers and pins did the trick to get the spines out). Before that however we pleaded for an hour with hotel management to pay for the doctor's bill. After all they should warn people about constant sea urchin problems at their facility. Apparently it is an ongoing problem with their beach, and we only learned this after talking to people on the resort, who had similar experiences, some this trips, some on previous trips to this resort. Anyhow, the hotel said that they couldn't take care of the doctors bill but could upgrade our room. It was a generous gesture, as we got to spend the last 3 nights of our stay in the Italian Village for free, and it would've been a $200 / night upgrade otherwise. The service at this resort is outstanding. By far the best service I've ever experienced in an all-inclusive setting. From the hotel entertainment staff, the servers, the bartenders, everyone had smile on their face while serving you, and never made us seem like an inconvenience, in fact, most of the staff went above and beyond what we expected of them. I was nervous about the restaurant food quality, as im a bit of a self admitted food snob sometimes. It's not that I'm a picky eater. I like all foods, and virtually any dish out there, but I really love great food, and it's usually the thing that stands out most in a trip for me. Well I was pleasantly surprised. For once, an all inclusive resort has impressed me with its food! Kudos to Sandals. All 9 restaurants have very good menus, with excellent selection! And the food was really good in most restaurants we ate at as well. (side from the Cannelloni at Guiseppes) The Sushi restaurant by the sea was exceptionally good, and so was Schooners seafood restaurant. We loved The Jerk Shack, and ate it for lunch almost everyday on the trip. And the Paris cafe was our go-to spot for breakfast. Where they made us specialty coffees, pastries, and a delicious breakfast crepe every morning. I could eat there everyday of my life, with no worries at all! The entertainment was good as well. They had a Bob Marley night, a Dance hall night, and a St. Pattys night, which were all good fun. There is also a piano bar at night, that turns into a niteclub / martini bar until 1am every night. So plenty to do in the evening. The big knock on this hotel is the beach area. While it's a big beach area, with amazing facilities, including overwater gazebos, with glass bottoms, and an overwater bar called latitudes, that sits in the open air, surrounded by the sea... Very cool place to have a drink. The beach itself isn't the best. It has a lot of sea weed growing along the the sea bed. It makes it very uncomfortable to swim in the water there, and impossible to see where you're stepping (beware of sea urchins). I really don't want to harp too much about the beach though, as there is a ton to do at this resort to keep your mind off of the beach, and all in all we had a wonderful trip. We would definitely recommend Sandals South Coast, and look forward to our next Sandals vacation. I can see why so many people come back to the Sandals brand... They have many loyal fans.

"Great resort!"

The staff here is very friendly and all try to make your stay as pleasant as possible. The property is gorgeous with greenery, beautiful sandy beach, pools and lovely accommodations (all rooms are oceanfront!!) We had dinner they other night at the Italian restaurant and our waitress, Shellecia, was the best on the resort!! So pleasant and sweet!! We left the restaurant in such a great mood after her gracious service! I would highly recommend this resort! Not too big that you can't walk around unlike some resorts that are so big you need shuttles. Have thoroughly enjoyed our time here! We

"Perfect, Relaxing Getaway"

My husband and I just returned from a four night stay at this resort. From the moment we arrived until the minute we left, we received fantastic service and attention to detail. We stayed in the newly remodeled Italian Village and our room was beautiful. Our butlers were Jen and Omar. I cannot say enough good things about them. Their service was superb, often taking care of things or bringing drinks without even being asked. The food was excellent and we had a lot of fun with the available watersports. This was the most relaxing and worry free vacation I have ever had. We have already booked for next year!

"Very good but"

My wife and I are veterans of Sandals so a lot of this review is a comparison against the others . We booked last year to specifically be in the Carribean for Super Bowl , having watched the set up but having to depart . Arrival at the airport and ride were fine as was check in . We were told we were first arrivals and walked to our room , without luggage , we were told it would be momentarily . We waited 45 minutes , didn't show , so we went and had lunch . An hour and half for a burger and salad , still no luggage . Two phone calls later and it showed . The good points of South Coast were , the beach was real nice and clean , the food at all the restaurants was its usual great . Latitudes bar is awesome with awesome staff . Staff at the night time restaurants were all very good. The not so good ........ Other than Latitudes , some of the staff at the other bars would flat out ignore you . We had some incredibly long wait times for our food . One lunch took so long ,as was the table next to us , they started chanting " we want our food" then only half our order showed up . One night we waited an hour and half and decided to leave without food, only to be tracked down next door in the bakery and told our food arrived . We had a credit for a massage . After filling all the paperwork and paying for whatever extra , we were walked to the room . On the way I was told because I've had cancer within five years , I can't have a massage but I could have a facial . Had I been told during the paperwork I wouldn't have continued . So at 57 I had my first facial . I was the prettiest at the pool that day . This is not a beach swimming resort , it's like walking in a lake . The water sports guy gave no instruction . I could have had my life vest on my head and my paddle board upside down , it didn't matter . There seems to be a big divide between VIP's and us regulars . All the good spots at the beach and pool locked up by butlers . The worst instance of this was at the Super Bowl viewing . The staff did a phenomenal job of setting up the pool area for the game , it looked great . The the rain came . So it was moved inside . We went in about 45 minutes early to get seats . We were on a nice chair and a folding chair . Because everything was being moved in from outside , there was no food or drink but no big deal , we were happy waiting for the game to start . Ten minutes before game time we were told to "get up " . With that our chairs were moved and a big couch was put down in its place and four people sat down . Then a small couch was put down off to the side of where we were for us . I couldn't believe what was just done and neither could people in the area , one man offered to move his seat and sit next to him . I was even questioned the next day at the pool . The VIP's wanted that spot . It'd be like getting to a movie early , getting your five pounds of popcorn and gallon of coke , getting two aisle seats , watching twenty minutes of previews and just when the lights go down four people tell you to move over ,not excuse me to get to seats beyond us , MOVE OVER . It wasn't right . We didn't book a Sandals for next year . We've started thinking of other options . P.S We were there for our thirtieth anniversary , which we were asked three times . We got a nice duck towel on our bed . P.S.S We did have a great time with friends we had booked with and we met two really nice people from Massachusetts ( you know who you are ! )

"Amazing vacation, Can't wait to go back"

We just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary at Sandals South Coast. The whole experience was exceptional! We felt catered to from the moment we walked off the bus and my husband was told to "step away from the luggage". They handle everything. Shantelle wisked us away for our private tour of the facilities, which is part of the Club Sandals elite service. Her smile was so warm and inviting that we felt welcomed from the moment we arrived. Leon and Jermaine in the Club Concierge office were there to answer our numerous questions and help us make the most of our 6 days there. Their friendly and warm personalities made us feel like part of the family. Toni, aka Happy Feet, and Nelson provided us with many hours of entertainment. Boy can those two dance! Sandals South Coast is a true gem and I recommend it for anyone who wants to have a relaxing getaway and feel pampered.
