"Lakefront and not Lakeview"
I stayed here for one night with a friend before catching a float plane to Lake Clark. I was expecting to have a view of Lake Spenard from my room but instead when I opened the frosted glass window on the ground floor, all I saw was the garbage and recycling area. The room was extremely spacious with big comfortable beds and a large shower room. My friend wanted a hair dryer but had to ring reception several times before one was brought. For one night though, the hotel was fine. There is a reasonable restaurant where we had breakfast which does look across to the Lake. I have to say that the reception area is like a Natural History Museum with glass cases containing Alaskan wildlife which once had lives before being shot and stuffed. Each case was labelled with the name of the hunter and taxidermist. This is not really my kind of thing as I prefer to see animals alive in their own habitat. However Alaska has a big hunting tradition and I was to see many more hotels with stuffed bears in their lobbies. The Lakefront is famous for hosting the annual Iditarod so there are archive photos of this famous sled race all over the walls of the lobby and a jar of dog biscuits on the counter. My favourite part of the stay was going for a walk by the Lake and meeting an ex-Iditarod dog called Guinness who kindly allowed me to pose for a photograph with her.
"2 night stay. Very Alaskan but overpriced"
The food is amazing. Staff is more then helpful. Free shuttle to airport and to downtown Anchorage. Lobby is huge and there is lots to see. The rooms on the other hand. The cost is through the roof! I can understand paying over $300 for a suite but it was just a normal, single king size bed room.
"Different, but not without pitfalls"
Stayed here just by accident, I did not choose the hotel but it was part of the business trip. The foyer and bar area is nice, gives an Alaska feel, wilderness feel, so it's spot on for that reason. Food not bad, for Alaska reasonable prices. Room however, hmmm, not impressed. We were "upgraded" to a downstairs suite. Large room, sofa, kitchen, the lot. But, not sure what type of room this is as the beds were fold out of the wall. I think these rooms double as "conference" rooms too. For a fold out bed the comfort was not unpleasant but the setup not the best as you still partially sleep in the "closet" so only one side table that is not fully reachable. Also no proper night lights to read a few lines by. Just a bit primitive really. I rather have a normal small room to be honest. Windows, a lot, but all frosted glass and once you see over it you understand why, they overlook just about nothing. Was not impressed by the repeated un scheduled wake up calls around 5 AM either! And, once a float plane takes off, it's like you are in it, very noisy, but only for the short period it flies past the opening in the buildings so the effect is dramatic, from no to full back to no sound....... Needless to say the sleep comfort in that room was not optimum.
Great views of the "comings and goings" of the numerous float planes on the lakeside of the [sprawling] building - pretty neat to watch; clean, spacious rooms; good restaurant and patio dining area to enjoy. Base for the Iditarod sled race and the lobby is adorned with preserved animals of the state; fairly unique for a lobby setting. Of the two establishments that we stayed in while visiting Anchorage, this is where we'll stay again when we return. Close to the airport; shuttle is provided to and from the hotel.
"Conference Center review not overnighting in hotel room"
Right off the bat I'm not going to describe my stay in one of the hotel rooms. I did not stay here but drove roundtrip to attend a conference. I want to let folks know that the conference room and other areas used where excellent. The conference room wasn't anything ornate but I don't go in for ornate. There was coffee and morning munchies available. The chairs were comfortable and the tables were the right height for writing or even resting my elbows on (oops, told on myself) when I was in much need of a break. Restrooms were close by and the lunch service was just fine. The waitstaff was very good. The front desk was very helpful when I first arrived asking the location of the conference and the parking was great. The only down side was that the elevators were as slow as molasses (left something in the car and I acknowledge I was therefore impatient) but I can understand that they are probably meant to stay open a bit longer to accomdate folks with suitcases, etc. Oh yes, one other thing to note, the speaker system used had a bit of feedback issues which caused just a little discomfort. By lunchtime the speakers had figured out where to stand to avoid the disturbing feedback issue. Not a bit deal but it was a pain in the patootie at times. All in all, I would attend a conference again here at the Lakefront.
