Over Lago Mar Beach Resort & Club

We booked this hotel for our 25th anniversary for 2 nights at the conclusion to a cruise out of Miami. We wanted to stay on the beach before our flight back home, which was out of FLL, so did a lot of research and this hotel fit the bill perfectly. What I didn't know at the time of booking, how truly wonderful our stay was going to be. We arrived relatively early in the day using Uber from the Port of Miami to the hotel. I believe Eric Paul was the gentleman that checked us in and that was the beginning of a most amazing stay in Fort Lauderdale. We were upgraded to a beautiful suite on a 5th floor corner unit without a wait. The view from the balcony was most amazing! The room was spotless and meticulously maintained. It had all the touches that made a hotel very special: robes in the closet, wonderful mattresses, bedding, linens and toiletries, a lighted make up mirror, sheers plus blackout crutains, in room safe, Kuerig coffee maker with all the fixings, small but useful fridge, microwave, ample balcony seating, etc. There were also flat screen tvs in the bedroom and living room areas as well as complimentary wifi. I could not say enough great things about our suite, which had a balcony that made for the most wonderful place to enjoy a morning cup of coffee or an afternoon glass of wine with cheese and crackers while listening to the music from the bar below and watching the sun rise over the ocean or the cruise ships sailing in / out of nearby Port Everglades. The grounds of the property are also wonderfully landscaped and maintained making it a perfect for families, a group of friends or a romantic getaway. There is something at this hotel that would please any and everybody. They not only had a beautiful pool area for everyone to enjoy, that wrapped around a cute little island in the middle, but also an adults only quiet pool. There was a ping pong table, a kids play ground area, lounges and tables on the beach, shuffleboard, mini golf, basketball, volley ball, giant chess, you name it ... it was there. The lounge chairs were strategically set up so you could get sun or shade, depending on your liking. The hotel is also located directly on a beautiful stretch of a nicely groomed beach. There was also a fabulous boutique, spa and wine bar, as well as a gorgeous restaurant, a great bar in the middle of the resort with a menu to choose from up until 5 PM, I believe, a to go food venue right at the entrance of the beach. Room service was also available for what I consider to be very reasonable prices. Only club members or registered guests could patronize these venues, which made it so nice as they never became too crowded for the guests to enjoy their meals or cocktails. There was a wine bar happy hour offered from 5-7 on weeknights and live music playing at the bar outside on weekend nights. While it may be tempting for some guests to go offsite for a tour or their meals, we never found the need to do so. This hotel had it all. And, the food was really good, so why go elsewhere? But, the most awesome feature of this hotel was the entire staff that went out of their way to ensure their guests had a most wonderful stay. Everyone there almost seemed like family, not only to each other but also to their guests. You just cannot replicate that in one of the larger, more impersonal hotels and it is obvious why they have such a following with repeat patronage. Michael, a manager at the property, stopped by to make sure our stay was perfect .. well, he succeeded! If I could give this hotel more than 5 stars on this review, I most certainly would! It is by far, the nicest experience we've ever had of any hotel in which we've stayed. I only wish I lived closer so I could pop down for a weekend stay more often. Sheer perfection that exceeded every expectation! Thank you all for the wonderful stay!
"The most wonderful experience at Lago Mar"
My husband and I planned his 70th birthday celebration at this especially family friendly resort. We spent a week here with our son and daughter and their families. The staff was especially attentive to our needs - with a single phone call to the front desk, someone was at our room within minutes and resolving each issue very quickly. The service could not be better. There is plenty to do right on the grounds to keep children entertained. Our grandkids played mini golf, shuffle board, relaxed on the hammocks, played in the playground, swam in the pool and enjoyed the private beach. We also enjoyed a photo shoot with the photographer right here on the property. Our pictures were ready within a few hours - what a beautiful memory for a fabulous vacation! Michael was wonderful with the children and was extremely patient, even with a 2 year old who was not always cooperative. We Love Lago Mar Resort!
"Not what we expected..."
We have stayed at Lago Mar many times and always loved it, but this time the problem started at the front desk at check in. It was a not very friendly front desk worker who checked us in. We have always had a very nice and warm welcome and this was something new for us at Lago mar, very loud speaking and not friendly at all. In our booking we had requsted a late checkout and we were told a large group were booked and that they stayed every year this time so it was impossible for us to have late check out.. The front desk worker told the other worker we had booked thru Expedia like it was a disease.... This "large groupe" seemed to be much more important than us, and we were told they could charge us one extra day for the room full price... when all we asked about was to stay a couple of hours... The resort was not full on the checkout day, but it was all about the money... Since last time we were there something has changed, the friendly atmoshere is gone and the resort is not at all what it was. Our room was quite tired and worn out, in the kitchen there were bugs running, dont know if it were some kind of ants? And the smoking around the pools, its 2017, please. There are other resort to try if Lago Mar not step up to what it was. The minigolf and the surroundings not at all so clean and beautiful like it use to be.
"Wonderful stay overall...some suggested changes"
My husband and I came for a few days with my infant daughter. The great experience actually started prior to us even stepping foot on the resort. I raised a question/concern with the General Manager, Michael, and without hesitation he helped us out. I was impressed by the level of customer service already. He took note of a few special requests, and when we arrived at the hotel, he came over to greet my family and I. He just made us feel extremely welcome. We spent time at the beautiful pool and beach (the property is lovely and very well maintained) and went back up to the room to change. An hour or so later the GM sent up wine and cheese and some breakfast vouchers which was very thoughtful. The good: -The outside property is beautiful and very well maintained. -The beach is private so it is not crowded at all. -Pool is beautiful and spacious, nicely heated. There is a quiet pool for those without kids. -Pool/beach bar is convenient and fun. -People are very nice and staff is extremely friendly. I’ve never stayed somewhere where everyone we talked to was just genuinely nice (Guests and staff included) this just made our stay really special -music in the evenings was a nice touch. -clean rooms, small kitchenette was great, bed very comfy, large bathroom with shower and tub. -a ton of tv channels. You aren’t coming here to watch TV, but if you’re traveling with a huge college football fan, this is a huge plus! What I would change if I could: -the rooms and property are a bit dated in terms of decor and could definitely use an upgrade. Maybe some paint and removing the giant window treatments. Again nbd, but noticeable. -drinks and other resort amenities are pricey. I know it’s a resort, but $9 for a seriously tiny milkshake of bryers ice cream at the soda shop is a ripoff. I hate when places do this because it feels like they are trying to take advantage of their Guests. I didn’t know the milkshake was $9 before I bought it. I could have ubered and gotten two milkshakes for that! -beach chairs are also dated (the ones you rent). We walked the beach and saw other resorts with much nicer looking comfortable chairs. They do have free chairs which are nice and can be placed wherever you wish. -not a great location if you don’t have a car and like to walk to things, and there is no resort shuttle. Uber was a good alternative as there was really no place close by to walk to in order to eat or purchase simple things aside from the soda shop for a hefty price tag. Coming from out of town this was a bit of a challenge. We decided to uber and eat on Las Olas Blvd which was nice. -we didn’t realize at the time there was the option of ocean view versus ocean front. Our room was ocean view but you really can’t see the ocean from our room. Still a beautiful view into the pool area, but definitely thought we were getting (and paying for) a true view of the ocean. Overall I am glad we stayed here. Quiet, not pretentious, and a relaxing enjoyable stay overall. Small changes would really have taken our stay to the next level, but nothing was a deal breaker for us. I think we would return and if we do not it would be to find a hotel within walking distance to more things :-)
"Clean but feels like I am visiting Grandma's house."
So based on the good reviews, I was expecting a nice place. The location is great. Right on the beach. The rooms are surprisingly average and old. It smells old, looks old and hasn't been remodeled since the early eighties. Not what I expected for $250 per night. Won't stay here again.
