"Just An OK Experience"

I would officially rate this property as a 3.5, just a tad above average. However, I would stay there again at the price point per night ($280) because I didn't see any other hotel that looked any better. (Except, of course the Four Seasons at $1200/night). I stayed here in a "ocean front" room for five days in February 2017. My main gripe is with my ocean front room I was expecting awesome views of the ocean. Unfortunately, my second floor room view was blocked by a tree. I did have around a 10% unobstructed view of the pacific. The pool was also between the ocean and balcony which was very loud from 7:00am to 8 pm. This wasn't a problem for me because I was out of the room during those hours but it could be annoying for some. Ask for a ocean front view away from the pool on a higher floor (4th floor is the highest). If room 3230 is the only option, I would downgrade to an ocean view room to move away from the pool and trees. Another less than average experience was with the gentleman who checked me in. Not a pleasant person. I did enjoy the coffee and employees at the coffee shop on the property. I ate two meals on the property. I would recommend the arugula/mixed green salad at the pool side grill. Pros Nice views of the Pacific Huge pool The coffee shop coffee Adequate 24/7 gym The balconies to the rooms are spacious Cons The property is becoming tired Less than helpful staff Reasons stated above

"Not your typical Starwood service and property"

I am not a platinum/top tier member but an SPG gold. I've been to several SPG properties and expected the Aloha spirit considering I checked-in late but didn't get it. The next day, our room did not get housekeeping service and I had to call to get fresh towels and all the necessities. Oh, did I mention there was a cockroach in our room that I had to ask housekeeping to vacuum? I've traveled extensively to tropical place and this is a first to see a cockroach that was barely alive in the room - even the housekeeping personnel was surprised. I am here for another two nights and I am hoping to get better service and experience to turn it around. We'll see.

"Quite a Bit Better Than We Expected"

* Pools and chairs were ALWAYS available, even though the hotel was full * Great ocean front views; the hotel is perched 10-20 foot lava cliffs pounded by the sea * Lots of Hawaiian decor in the public areas Be Aware: * No beach whatsoever * Nowhere to walk, really (or only very short walks) * Disorienting modern layout makes it hard to find your room * Hotel restaurant is not open for lunch * We had a large room, but with a kind of utilitarian feel to it * Drive up the hill to Sam Choy's for great, cheaper food with plenty of ocean view * Slightly mildewy in our room due to the constant oceanfront moisture * Huge lanai patio, but water from above units poured down through the ceiling unexpectedly! So don't stand under the ceiling drain... TIP: Especially good deals for SPG Platinums: Executive Lounge has the best views of all (though LAME food offering) and is open 24 hours; close-in self-parking; free champagne at Ray's; half-off at the pig-trough-shove-fest buffet)

The wife and I stayed at the Kona Sheraton for 8 nights. The grounds are beautiful, but the rooms and especially the beds are in need of updating. We had the Ocean-front and it has an awesome view, but we were near the restaurant/bar. The band would play loud until 9:30pm keeping us awake. The buffet was nearly $30 and the omelette bar was only open 2 mornings. The only juice available was orange. We are in Hawaii, where is the papaya juice? The food at Rays on the Bay was way over priced and not a very good selection. The $15 parking is a joke, we are already paying a lot of money for the resort and their fees. The staff was very friendly and this is the reason I will give it an extra star.

"Lovely property, Wonderful Service"

All of the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. We took advantage of the many extras this hotel offers. Be sure to take the Trolley into Kona, the relaxing trip is the perfect way to see the coastal area between the hotel and Kona. I loved making leis with Aunty Tutu, she is such an amazing ambassador for Hawaii, her love for her people and land is so evident. The pools are very family friendly and also perfect for couples who want a quiet area (we rented snorkel equipment at the pools). The beautiful grounds are definitely worth walking each morning. We loved watching for Manta Rays on the observation deck within the Restaurant "Rays on the Bay" (no need to eat there, you are welcome to walk through the restaurant). We did however, enjoy a fabulous fish meal at Rays one evening, one of our favourites! Our room was a partial ocean view on the sixth floor. It was very quiet in room 4664 we had many restful nights!
