"Great stay at Sheraton Kona"
My wife and I stayed in an ocean view Ohana suite earlier this month. The suite was great with comfortable bed/furniture and clean bathrooms. Based on some of the other reviews, it seems like we lucked out got one of the renovated suites. I travel quite a bit for work and have SPG platinum status. So, that might have helped. The best part of our suite was the balcony which had a spectacular view of the sunset each night. We would go back and stay here just for that. The hotel gardens and the shoreline walk are also highlights of the property. The staff was really nice everywhere and highly responsive for any requests we had. Couple of things we did not like (and the reason for the 4 stars): 1) They have a $30 resort fee and $20 parking fee ($25 for valet) which is not included in the room price. I would rather they include these in the room price vs. charge separately. However, I realize this is fairly common across resorts in Hawaii 2) The breakfast buffet is not worth the $30 they charge. It is very basic continental breakfast which you get for free in most Marriott properties and they served the exact same thing every single day for the 6 days we stayed here
"First trip, definitely not our last to the Sheraton"
We just returned from a 7 day stay at the Sheraton Kona. We were warmly greeted by Sally, who was very sweet and professional, at the front desk. We informed her that we were celebrating our 10th Anniversary and asked for a room with a great view. She went above and beyond and gave us room 1232 which met every expectation. It was a very large room, very clean, and had an amazing balcony which overlooked the bay and the ocean. The beds were very comfortable. The housekeeping staff did an incredible job. The Valet staff were very knowledgeable, friendly, fun and provided directions to different venues. George, the bartender at Ray’s restaurant had a great sense of humor and mixed us some amazing drinks. Rolinda was extremely knowledgeable about Hawaiian history and I highly recommend her history tour. Her Ukulele class was really fun and she was very patient and kind helping me while I fumbled with the cords. The Manta Ray presentation was amazing and I highly suggest watching them feed at night. We would stay here again in a heartbeat. I understand that next year the hotel will be renovated and I pray they keep it a hotel instead of timeshares.
I have not been here yet but I am already disappointed. Due to the volcano and half of our Vacation being on that side of the island, we chose to cancel and go to Maui. The BNB we were staying at on the Hilo side, actually told us to cancel and said we were doing the right thing and graciously refunded our money. I have tried to call Sheraton many times to cancel and get my money back, but they refuse, they are rude and insist things are fine and business as usual. Let's be honest, I'm not stupid. I have read the forums, looked at the Vog models, weather reports, the NPS website, Civil Defense website, and looked at the webcams on all the beaches daily. It is not fine, the air quality is horrible and you are lying to your clients. It's ridiculous. I even tried to transfer my money to the Sheraton in Maui. No help from anyone.. stealing people's hard earned money when a natural disaster is on your doorstep. (Yes I know it is 100 miles away and don't need you to educate me, I can read a map) But the effects are real. Very unsettling how they are treating consumers. Never again...Thank you Sheraton Kona for stealing my hard earned money.
"A little overused, but great location"
I read a lot of negative reviews about this hotel before we left. Yes we found it a bit overused, but it was clean, in a good location, and good amenities. Pools were nice, both poolside bar and hotel restaurant has good food.
"would not come back"
We stayed at the Sheraton in May 2018 room 2223. First let me start by saying I think the staff is doing an excellent job, they are probably just faced with a management team that's primary focus is maximizing profits just my opinion. Most people will say when they read reviews that you will always find someone that you cannot please. I believe this is true I have stayed at resorts with poor reviews and found them to be nice places, this is not one of them. I believe when you stay at a resort you come to expect certain things, this is the reason I book them. One is robes in the rooms. When I travel to a resort like this I try and book an ocean front room when available, so me and my wife can go out on the deck and enjoy watching the waves wile having a cup of coffee and decide where we will have breakfast. There are no robes in the room or at least this one. the other thing the coffee maker supplied in the room looks like something you would find in a dollar store. I am not expecting anything fancy but I have seen better ones in a motel 6 not kidding. when we first got to the room the handle on the slider was almost falling off and the door was hard to open . again the staff did a great job of coming to fix right away. The room itself was large enough, the bed really needs to be replaced along with the furniture. The one dresser drawer would not stay closed, my wife had to place a folded up piece of paper in it to keep it closed when her clothes where in it. The bathroom smelled musty, given the hotels ;location I know it can be hard to keep this from happening but I have stayed at other resorts that have done a far better job. I think the toilet in the bathroom was the biggest joke it looked like something you would expect to see in a rest stop along the interstate. The AC in the room didn't work very well either really hot in the room or very cold. We probably could have complained more to the front desk about our room and people that read this would probably ask why we did not. The simple answer is we did not want to deal with packing up and moving to another room, only to find it not being much better then the room we were in or worse. We were there to enjoy our vacation that is what I expected and what I paid for!
