"Arkansas family vacation group of 24"
We were a large group but had a good experience when we checked in on Oahu. Sheraton Kona was a completely different experience, chaos. Prior to our vacation we had made arrangements for our rooms and had paid in full. My nephew a family of 4. was given rooms that were already occupied, 3 times. They even tried to put them in my mothers room. she had also already been moved twice. By that time my mother was in tears and my nephew said no. Your not moving my grandmother again. That was the first day. So no hot water for approximately 3 days the remainder of our stay. My nephew was locked out of his room twice, that I know of. Rays on the Bay was going through renovations. I was communicating with group sales before arriving and was not told of the closure. When in line waiting our turn to speak to someone at the front desk. we were ignored. They bypassed us and took the next group who were airline employees. I can say that my sister and I spent a large sum for a week stay we expected common curtesy, at the very least. I must say the bellman/valets were very accommodating and knowledgeable. The hotel does have a trolley that has limited service. Rent a car and do it before you leave home unless you want to spend time standing in line waiting for an hour to be told come back on Tuesday and you arrived on Saturday. Not their fault mine. I should have researched more. Places and things to do are spread out. You do need transportation. Rental cars are not always available. The maid service was adequate others in our group described it as Poor. I was happy with the view from our room. We had our family pictures taken on Sheraton grounds, with the lava and ocean as the background they turned out great. They do have washer and dryer for guests, I can't remember the cost. The kids were enjoying the pool while some of us were doing laundry. They do offer some family activities. We did not do any of these we had already had some group tours scheduled. So customer service overall I found lacking everyone has a bad day, but for us they were to numerous to count. Did it take away from our trip ? I don't think so. We all had a good time regardless. would I stay there again no. Would I recommend Kona Sheraton? Based on our experience no.
As I understand it this hotel is being bought by Marriott so things will get updated. The views from this hotel are spectacular! The pools are very nice. No swimming in the ocean as it if full of lava rocks but beautiful. There is a trolley to carry you downtown and it has many stops. The rooms are big ours had a ocean front view. The bathroom...well it's well worn out. Safe in the room. There are cats. Even joined us in the dining room one night. Birds in the dining room for breakfast. Interesting. But I would stay here again. Actually I'm here now!
Have stayed here annually for years. Not sure will return. Pool is about only thing still favorable. Check-in -- in a hurry although small line. Room nowhere near area requested 3 weeks earlier. Rays closed - website said would reopen in July - now August. NO ADVANCE NOTICE. Property warn and in need of updating throughout. (See attached picture of patio ceiling) Do NOT find this to be a 4 star property
"Great Location, lovely pool, beautiful yoga on the lawns"
I really liked this resort. Beautiful gardens in lava rock right on the edge of the sea near a historic site. The hotel has a beautiful lounge area, pool area - astounding for kids actually as it has several areas and a waterside and bar....all lovely. There was yoga a few times a week and a lovely gym area. You can book a luau at the hotel and also they have an area where you can book trips out. I love the restaurant area as you can watch the manta rays and even dive with them. Kona is the best part of Big Island for the most modern centre as it has restaurants and lots of nice places to go. The rooms were ok, very modern and hotel like - the rest of the hotel sort of made up for them being on the smaller side, but we spent so much time outside that we didnt care. I would come back here.
"Unfortunate visit "
Went to have a drink at rays on the bar, unfortunately they were renovating. We ended up going to the bar near the pool. We waited close to 20 minutes to be served and the tables around us had food on them that the local cats had a good meal from. Walked up to the bar to try to get service the bar staff seemed uninterested and walked away, had to call a staff over for service, the bar tender didn't even acknowledge or talk to us when we ordered a couple of drinks. Probably the worst service we have had on our trip to Hawaii. Has put us off staying or visiting any Sheraton hotels in the future.
