"Good location but needs upgrades and better food options"
We stayed at the Sheraton Kona for 5 nights. Great views of the bay! But the hotel looks a bit wore down, expect the lobby which is nice. Nice pool overlooking the ocean (keep in mind there is no beach access). We found the restaurant menus to be extremely limited and the food at the pool is blend (specially the fish tacos and fish sandwich have no taste). Drinks are pretty good. Good location.
"Not a good place"
I stayed in this hotel in January, escaping the cold weather of the East Coast. It takes on average 13-15 hours for a traveler from East Coast (or Midwest) to get there; obviously, people are tired, and many are already frustrated. The hotel staff was not friendly and understanding at all. I needed three attempts to find my room without much help; the building design is confusing and the elevators are well-hidden (no signs). The rooms are large but definitely outdated (maybe 70s?); bathrooms, carpets and furniture are not clean. Food is OK but definitely overpriced. To get basic things replaced in your room (toilet paper, towels, etc.), you need to call service desk. The most unpleasant surprise is car parking. The hotel website advertises charge of $15 per day plus tax. However, the hotel places additional $30 per day surcharge (it’s 200%!!!); so, get ready to pay $45 per day for parking.
First the positive...The grounds are very pretty, the location is good and the staff were always helpful and friendly. But.... This hotel needs some love and is way overdue for a renovation. We arrived late in the evening and the check-in was pretty busy, but the staff remained friendly to everyone. True to SPG, we were upgraded to an ocean view room, which was really a partial view, as we were back by the bar and had to look over the pool, but it was a view nonetheless. Our room was really big, which was great as we were staying for 5 nights, but the carpet looked dirty, the furniture had seen better days and the chair cushion was stained. Our bathroom was just so-so. It had poor lightening, a very low counter, no vanity mirror. and the shower curtain had that mildew smell The toilet was also extremely hard to flush. It also took about 5 minutes to heat up and then turned to scalding and we had to turn the handle all the way back down to not burn ourselves. I also think paying a parking fee and a resort fee is ridiculous, especially since the parking lot is quite large. In addition, we were always on the go – diving and site-seeing, so we didn’t use the resort amenities. If you plan to be always moving as well, you may want to consider a staying at a place that doesn’t charge all those fees. We only ate in the club lounge. It was ok. The actual lounge was closed and we were in a big room on the main floor. That may have been done because there were so many families paying extra for the lounge. If you are SPG and used to a nice lounge, don't expect much from this one. Breakfast consisted of scrambled eggs, oatmeal, some fruit and yogurt and so-so pastries. One morning we didn't come down until after 8 and it was a zoo. It was also hard for the staff to keep up, so we had to wait for coffee and the food to be refilled. Again, the staff did the best they could, but the hotel management should have prepared better for the holiday crush and perhaps thought through a better strategy to better serve the families that took advantage of this offer as well as their members. The lounge had also seen better days and is also in need of a refresh. If we get a chance to go back to Kona we will probably stay elsewhere....
"Get the ocean view"
So based on other reviews we booked the ocean view. Glad we did. Every evening we returned to our hotel to see boats floating in the illuminated water watching the Manta Rays. Our room was nice and spacious. We could hear the waves crashing on the rocks at night. We chose to have breakfast included which was a gorgeous view every morning. (Rays on the Bay overlooks the water.) Hotel location is nice and quiet and the pool/jacuzzi are amazing. Theres also a cool waterslide. This hotel has no beach access but the pool makes up for it and the beach is nearby. And in the midst of the possible “missile attack†that was looming while we were there, my husband and I thought, “Well at least we are in paradise!â€
Great hotel, lack of service or ALOHA from staff. Hotel needs to be updated, need a better selection of food for guest. Spent 5 days 4 nights at this resort, spent most of our time at the pool. For for eat was a paper menu and on that menu just the burger and salad was great that’s about all had on the menu and sorts of taco. Pool service should be given to all by the pool and not just certain people. Staff walking around don’t show the aloha spirit, passed staff every day non of them said aloha nor have a great day or even how your doing? We are paying guest paying your salary, their should be service and aloha spirit all over the resort. Other then that family had a great time had great rooms facing the pool and ocean, but when the waves crashed against the cliffs, our sliding doors would rattle and make big noise. Notified maintenance no one showed up the whole time we were there.
