"The Best Mai Tai You Will EVER Have"
Overall, the resort met expectations. There was a hard-core Hawaii-touristy feel, so the setting met expectations; we got exactly what the brochure was selling. It was a good thing. The pool with the rock waterfall was nice and added to the ambiance; the water slide was fun too. The shoreline path was great for views and leisurely strolls. But the greatest feature of all was, by far, the mai tais at Ray's on the Bay bar/restaurant were the best I've ever had, anywhere. Apparently, the make them with sugarcane as a substitute for the more traditional coconut juice. And the results were - amazing!!!! Yum. Ray's on the Bay's food was generally good but the menu was limited. The buffet breakfast, for the price, was no value at all. I don't think it would be a bad ideal to put in a waffle maker or have a couple of chefs offering made-to-order omelets. That would at least make me feel like we got some value for the price. The coffee wasn't very good and the toaster only toasted half my bread. And you'd think that coffee in Kona would rock. The staff was pretty good overall. The two most memorable standouts were at the pool bar. The male bartender was attentive and friendly. However, the young thin female bartender presented an appearance that she just couldn't be bothered with customers and was very aloof. I will say that the young lady pushing water cart around the pool and offering water to the guests was very friendly and engaged all the guests; very pleasant.
We had a great time! Friendly staff, and the place is clean. In response to other elements of other reviews I saw.... First, we're Starwood preferred guests. We reserved a mountain view room and got not only a very quiet room at the far end of a wing (a good thing in my book) but we had a partial ocean view. I think belonging to rewards programs really helps with these kinds of things. Second, yes the decor is a little dated and worn. I did notice some of the glass tables by the pool were cracked. As a Sheraton you'd think this is an easy replacement. But for me, old and worn isn't a problem if things are clean, which they were! Even the bathroom really leaves something to be desired in terms of modernness, but it was clean. The property is gorgeous. Sitting at Rays on the Bay for food/drinks watching the sunset or just enjoying watching the waves at breakfast is amazing. The bed was very comfortable with incredibly soft sheets. There was a business center, a pro shop, water activity rental, and other activities. Fitness center looked nice but we didn't use it; didn't check out the spa. There's a coffee shop, but if you don't like the prices there's a shopping center a very short drive away (we bought snacks and bottled water for the room). There's also a free shuttle into Kona. Overall we had a wonderful stay. Only giving four instead of five stars because most Sheratons are more up-to-date.
"Big Island Fun @ the Sheraton Kona Resort"
What a great stay and big thanks to the wonderful staff! The hotel was clean and the grounds were well manicured. Jill was wonderful in setting us up at the pool, with our awesome cabana, and arranging our rentals for our beach excursions. She remembered our names the next day and took care of us. Chuck served us pool side and did wonderful job in keeping the drinks and food flowing. Lastly, we had a late check out and Debora did a great job in setting us up so we could enjoy our last day in Kona. My family and I will be back and we will stay here again! Be sure to check out the Mantas!!
"Relaxing place to stay"
Manager upgraded us to an ocean-view room, as our room was not ready after checking in at 12:30 a.m., partly due to the out-going flight crew leaving late as our flight was two hours late arriving. We greatly appreciated the manager and staff efforts to get us checked in comfortably after a long day. Water-slide or the falls in the two connected pools, one inside hotel complex and one facing out to the ocean, appear to be strategically placed to drown out noisy children so you can relax in their lounge-chair in the sun. I enjoyed the warm hot-tub which helped me recover from my morning runs. The first afternoon at the pool we were able to view four different whales in the ocean from our chairs by the pool. The room was large with large dresser to organize clothes, fridge to keep refreshments cold and large desk for laptop & camera. Great to have a safe to store passport, extra credit cards and cash. Washrooms are dated but overall room was comfortable. The bed was very good and the hotel was typically quiet for a person to catch up on rest during the day. Entertainment in the evening, such on Friday can be noisy, but usually, things were quiet by 10:00 p.m. Eating at the hotel is not affordable, but the Keahou Shopping Centre provides nourishment options when one is not travelling around Kona. My brother has stayed at this location ten time and I can see myself returning again to the hotel.
"Old and tired"
Spent 4 nights at the Sheraton kona resort found it to be old, tired and dirty. The room was medium sized, smelled like cleaning solvent, carpets spotted and frayed, deck was dirty with two chairs one with a cushion and one without, the chair without the cushion had a wasps nest attached to it but no wasps. Included in the rate was 2 bottles of water each night but we didn't get them on our last night, asked for a refilled lotion bottle 3 times before receiving it. The fourth floor had built-in planter boxes all around the walk way but only one plant the others had died. The location is the last resort to the south. The only bright spot was the coffee bar, the staff was very friendly and coffee was excellent.
