"Old fashioned hotel in a great location"

I just spent two nights at the Carmel by the Sea and actually found the experience very enjoyable. I'm a frequent visitor to Santa Monica and have mostly stayed in some of its very nice luxury hotels - Fairmont, Viceroy, Oceana Beach Club, etc. so the Carmel was obviously a far less luxurious choice and I worried a little based on some of the reviews here but quite frankly, I was very happy with my choice, and this review is a "4+" rather than a 4-. Now let's be clear, what other reviewers do not like is understandable. The room décor obviously feels very 1980s in style and some smell a bit "old", but they are very clean, of a decent size, and comfortable with very good beds. I was first given a room towards the back. Some people will prefer them because they are far more quiet, but I prefer more light so asked and changed to a room on the street the next day. They are noisier and don't expect any 'view' per se, but you get more of a sense of lively Santa Monica which is what I wanted and I was tired enough to sleep well anyway. The reception staff were all absolutely lovely. All young women in their 20s, in St Patrick party mood which was fun to see, nice, trying their best to help and very apologetic when they could not (for instance on the first evening when no street side room was available, or when they said no late check out was possible due to the Marathon). I think that they are a great asset to the hotel and contribute to a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The bathrooms are totally fine for the hotel category. Don't expect marble separate showers, but you'll have a regular US shallow acrylic tub with shower attachment, decent toiletries, sufficient towels, and cleanliness. In terms of the room itself, as mentioned, I found the beds really comfortable, wifi is free and works well, and cable tv is fine for those who want it. I'm really surprised to read so many reviews complaining about the morning coffee service. With due respect, I think people should get a grip. At the Viceroy, you pay a $31 'resort fee' that gives you wifi and morning coffee in the lobby and that's pretty much it. At the Carmel, you pay nothing at all and get the same plus orange juice, Danish, muffins, some sort of biscuits (and on the morning of the marathon there were bananas and bottles of water too for all - runners and non runners alike - to enjoy. The quality of the pastries is average, but quite frankly, for a free offer I thought this was great. Despite some reviewers saying that there was nothing left when they went down, on both mornings I was there, the pastry cabinet was replenished regularly and in fact had more choice when I came back from my morning meetings around 10 than when I went down to help myself at 6.30. And of course, given the location, if this is not to your liking, you have literally dozens of choices on your doorstep including rather good coffee at Café Cielo 30 seconds walk away (liked their cold brew). The location remains indeed the hotel's best asset. Broadway and 2nd is right in the middle of everything. Even better in some way than many of Santa Monica's top end choices. The TripAdvisor rating system is always relative. This is of course not the 'best hotel' in Santa Monica in terms of rooms, etc. The comments on décor etc are of course well founded and you can find larger, prettier rooms with great views in various other hotels - at a price. In that sense, it would be a bit of a stretch if I gave Carmel a "5" that suggested that it was the best hotel in town so a 4 makes sense here. However, if TripAdvisor had sub-categories and I were to rate Carmel in terms of its friendliness, location, and value for money as a Santa Monica mid-range hotel at affordable prices, I would give it a 5 without hesitation, and in fact, within that category, I am pretty sure that it is not too far from being the best choice in town.

"Pleasant hotel"

Smooth check in. Funny smell in rooms but very clean. Old decor but no issues. Rooms were quite basic, no coffee facilities but these are offered in the reception in the morning. Close proximity to the beach and surrounding shopping area. Hotel is faced with lots of homeless people in the surrounding streets during certain times of the day. Internet worked fine. Room cleaning was excellent.

"Poor Hotel"

This is a very bad service hotel. Even though located at the prime location, I wouldnt recommand to anyone. The receptionist is very rude and no smile at all when answering questions. They even talk very rude when answer the phone. The electricity black out suddenly too.

"Very good location"

My grandaughter and me stayed here twice in February. We had one night in a standard room with two queen beds and one night in a suite, also with two qeens. The hotel is somewhat worn, and would benefit from some upgrading. It is clean and friendly. The location of the hotel is ideal, with two blocks to the oceandrive/beach/Highway 1, and one block to downtown with a very nice shopping district with no cars. The area is full of life and friendly restaurants.

"Standard hotel but a nice price in Santa Monica"

Why I am giving Carmel a very good rate? Reason is first it's location, it is in the hart of Santa Mónica. If you have been to Sant Mónica you would know the location is great. Second the price. Although Carmel it's not certainly a luxury hotel it fulfills what you could ask for it. Clean rooms (not big but ok), nice staff that is helpful and also they serve a mini breakfast in the morning. We arrived very early in the morning and they were able to give us the room already what was really great and also they allow us to have breakfast although we were still not checked in that day in the morning. Our checking time was that same day during the afternoon. So, if you are looking for a place to stay in Santa Monica for affordable prices this could be your place. Very important peace of advise: if you have a car and are thinking of using the valet parking, don't do it. There is a public parking just50 meter from the hotel in the same street. You can go and park your car for the first two hours without cost. That would mean that if you are taking the car in an out several times during the day you would end up not paying for the whole day of parking. After that, if you want to leave it for the night is 17,5 tops. We did that and we were able to save some money for other stuff. Cheers, Sebas
