"great location"

The location of this hotel is excellent for the beach, pier and shopping.Reception staff were friendly and informative about local transport and events. The room was clean and bathroom towels soft and fluffy. The coffee and free pastries in the morning an added bonus. The only negative was the hum of the air con plant that our room backed on to but once you got used to it the bed was large, comfortable and sleep quality good.

"Saved by its Location"

As other reviewers have commented, the location of the hotel is its greatest asset, being within easy walking distance of everything you would want on a seaside break away from the main LA beaches. The promenade is quite well laid out but is separated from the sea by a busy road, though the beach is extensive once you get there and the pier offers lots of interest for all age groups. The Carmel is really historic, having hosted many greats of the silent movies in the 1920s, although it does mean it's now rather old-fashioned and dated inside. The morning refreshments are just enough to give you the strength to look for further sustenance, for which you need go no further than the excellent café Cielo a few doors along 2nd Street. Our room faced the rear and was exposed to the miniature nuclear power plant in the back yard, roaring away 24/7 and not compatible with a good sleep. The room was nevertheless a reasonable size and clean, with good storage space and a welcome bathtub, and would have represented reasonable value for money had it not been so noisy. The staff were pleasant and helpful and the $20 valet parking service was efficient and convenient.

"Amazing location and great for the price"

I am a bit split regarding this hotel. It is true, it is in an absolutely amazing location, the price is right, staff very friendly, cheap valet parking at $20 per day, you get free breakfast service (danishes, muffins, coffee and tea) and a daily paper delivered to your door. They also have free wifi that is just great! But then there is also the ONE elevator for the entire block of 3 floors of rooms. I recommend the stairs unless you like waiting at busy times. The rooms are clean but dated. It is also the only place where I have ever seen plastic tiles. But it works, and that is the main thing. The big downside for me though is the really, really noisy air conditioning unit that is in the yard, so if you have a room facing the yard, you have more noise there then at LAX 24 hours per day. I would recommend you ask for a room facing the street. At least the street noise dies down at the later hours. Also be mindful that the second floor is a smokers floor with smoking rooms. Again, location is great. Starbucks around the corner, hop on hop off buses a block away, grocery store 10 minutes walk up Broadway and Santa Monica Pier just a short walk away. Its perfect for your stay in Santa Monica and I would probably be back.

"No complaints! Amazing location"

This hotel had a great location and that is what is the best part about it! The rooms are average and dated but clean. It had everything necessary that you needed. You do have to pay for parking at 20.00 a day. We arrived Thursday afternoon and left Saturday at check out and was charged for 2 days. They always had our car ready quickly. They have good coffee and danishes in the morning as well as a paper each day which was a nice addition. Staff was very helpful and accomodating. Be sure to get a coupon for Jinky's cafe next door! Overall, the location hands down can't be beat. You are in walking distance to 3rd Street Promonade, Santa Monica Pier and restaurants, shopping and bars.

"Good location if you get a quiet room"

Valet was good as Santa Monica is a-nightmare to drive around, it was on 2nd street not broadway which caused some confusion. The check in was quick and friendly but the room/hotel was extremely dated and had an old worn out feeling to it, however the housekeeping did a good job of keeping it clean. the quiet room requested had a fan from hell blowing 24/7 directly outside of the window which was disturbing. We had a view of the inner guts of the building which for the cost of the room was disappointing but the saving grace was the location. There was no fridge or coffee making facilities and this was only available at reception in the morning between 6 and 10. 5 minute walk to the pier...I'm struggling to think of anything good to say really, very basic with very little thought on quality.
