"Hotel or dog kennel?"
If you're not a dog person (like me), then this isn't the place for you. Everywhere I turned, there was a dog!! I wish I had known before I booked. It just wasn't for me. The staff were nice, the rooms ok; and poolside bar staff were particularly awesome. I probably won't return next year.
"Like all Kimptons..."
Like all Kimpton hotels, I'm sure this place was nice when it first opened it's doors, but now shows heavy wear with little done to maintain appearances. It's mildly stylish in that overly giant loud prints sort of way and it boasts a fantastic location. Unfortunately, there are also so many little things that irritate. Like the fact that there is actually NO business center, although you rarely need one these days, but as it happened I did. Or the fact that the fixtures are cheap, the fitness center is meh, the soaps aren't refilled properly in rooms, no bags in the trash cans, and overall a general shabbiness to the common areas. They are clean common areas I should add, just worn out. The staff seem a bit under appreciated by the management but are all still helpful and kind. Very akin to the hotel Monaco in DC which suffers the same maintenance failings with louder decor (large prints are good at hiding filth.) I will try another Gas Lamp hotel when I return at the end of the summer I think. Just... OK All around just OK But seriously... Location, location, location.
This is our second time to this location, with the first being several years ago and overall pretty good. Unfortunately times have changed. While we are still just a few hours into our stay its thus far been disappointing. Hotel room is small, bathroom very dirty with hairs left by prior lodgers, they utilize cheap pumps for either near empty, empty or broken amenities and the general common areas (lobby, elevator, pool, etc) are worn and dirty. We are hopeful that they can rectify bathroom/room cleanliness situation. We will see (and update post accordingly)...
"Red bull air races and birthday weekend"
Had booked this hotel through hotwire in January, had been promised an upgrade as it was my husbands birthday celebration. When we got there, were told been downgraded back as it was a third party booking and hotel was now full for the night. We were very disappointed and a bit upset. Kayse at the desk was very helpful and did what she needed to to make it happen- thank you very much- we really appreciated your customer service at the Kimpton. One of the reasons we will be back is due to this service. The hotel happy hour was nice and though it was busy they made sure they had enough for all. The pool was really nice, the only thing that would have been better about the pool area was if I could have taken my coffee or my own club soda out there with me, instead of always having to buy from the bar. I have never been anywhere that you can't take your own drinks or snacks if they are in unbreakable containers to the pool. This would be the only thing that would give me pause about booking here again. Was great that the hotel had bikes which we used one day- took the ferry over to Coronado island and biked to the beach- great ride and easy. Hotel was in a great location to everything.
"Cool place - very fun to see so many dogs hanging around"
This place is right in the middle of the Gaslamp District which is great - you can walk anywhere safely and quickly - day or night. The hotel is also dog-friendly so I think literally everyone here had their pooches with them which was very fun. And the place never smelled like animals - also good ;) Biggest downside was the exorbitant parking fee to park at the hotel. They charge $49 a nigh - which is just flat out crazy. You can drop off your luggage and park one block away for $15 a day. I ain't a cheapskate, but I also don't love being bamboozled either. Charging that much for parking amounts to a 40% price increase for the night, considering we got the room for $125 a night. Otherwise, a great place. Great pool and nice bar menu and the rooms were well appointed as well.
