"Amazing game reserve"
Could not fault anything on our 4 night stay at Kariega river lodge. Karen our ranger was absolutely brilliant & her knowledge of nature was first class. Her tracking skills were awesome and she explained footprints and other signs so that we also felt that we were tracking with her. We saw some amazing wildlife and even spotted a leopard tortoise after finding its footprints in the mud. We saw the Black Rhino which was special and even witnessed a kill by one of the lionesses, a rare thing to see. Karen ensured we were well looked after, was an excellent host & made sure she found us fantastic locations for photography opportunities. Also a big thank you to the lodge staff who were all very efficient, friendly & cheerful. They made us feel special and looked after our every need & we loved the greeting after the afternoon drive. I would have no hesitation in recommending river lodge, we have been home a week now and can't stop talking about it !
4 nights and first time safari for the children (12 and 10). Absolutely perfect for them with activities between drives, including trips to the beach and kayaking on the river. We saw plenty of wildlife - great viewings of the elephants and lions in particular. No leopard, but that's to be expected and having to go through gates between the different parts of the reserve is unfortunate, but, again to be expected on a private reserve in the Eastern Cape. Thomas, our guide was fantastic and gave great insight into the management of the reserve, how they protect the rhinos in particular and he managed to get us into some amazing viewing positions. The rangers worked together well to make sure you were generally the only vehicle viewing at any one time, or at least one of two with the other one leaving, or just arriving. We also had a good group which was lucky as you do drives, have breakfast, dinner and other activities together.
We had a 3 night safari to finish off our touring holiday in South Africa and had 6 game drives. Our guide was Thomas who was very knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions we had. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, we didn’t see the leopard so didn’t see the Big 5 but we saw so many other animals - lions, rhinos, giraffe, hippo, buffalo, zebra etc etc and lots of colourful birds. There were lots of highlights but favourites were following the rhinos as we headed back to the lodge one evening and seeing the elephants. On one occasion one was very close to me munching on the branches next to the jeep. We also saw two male elands fight to show who was boss which lasted a good 20 minutes before one of them gave up. We also enjoyed the break when we got out of the jeep to have a drink. It was amazing to think that you are so close to wild animals. The majority of the guests we shared our jeep with over the 6 drives were great and we met some lovely people although there was one couple who were a bit arrogant. Just one of those things when you’re in that situation. We were in one of the 3 lodges which were set apart from the main lodges and we had to use a golf buggy to travel between the buildings. That was quite an interesting experience! The buggy is left in the docking station to charge whilst you’re out and I would say that an improvement would be to have some lighting in this area at night to collect the buggy to travel back to your lodge. The lodge itself was large with everything required and the 3 lodges shared a small pool. Although we didn’t use this, it would be very welcoming if the weather was very hot. The food and wine was excellent during our stay. The staff would be there to welcome you back after your afternoon game drive with a drink before dinner. We had a barbecue one evening which was also great. This was our 3rd safari (another in South Africa and one in Kenya) and Kariega was our favourite.
"Wow Wow Wow....Awesome"
From the moment we drove into Kariega and were greeted and given direction to the main lodge until that same lady waved us off, we had an amazing time. I have always thought Safari Lodges are over priced and are abusing the tourist market, but I am converted . We stayed in a chalet (27) in the main lodge and it was spotless, very nice and had amazing views over Kudu ridge . Our guide (Jenny) made the trip for us, she was so friendly, knowledgeable and when we went out for our 6am game drive she did everything possible to make sure we were comfortable on a pretty cold morning. We only stayed for one night and we felt it was enough because we saw pretty much everything (except leopard), but I think that was down to Jenny and her determination to make our visit memorable. I don't think a longer stay would be overkill as there is plenty to do but it might be a bit tiring for young kids. I looked at plenty of nature reserves in the north and on the coast and I am delighted that we picked Kariega. The dinner was good and plenty to choose from, but it is a buffet so just align your expectation with that. Breakfast was great and you will really enjoy that after the 6 am game drive. One thing, kids meals needs to be ordered at check-in, we were not told this, but it was not an issue as there was plenty for them to eat in the buffet. I will definitely recommend Kariega and hope to be back one day.
"Once in a lifetime experience"
We arranged to spend the last 3 nights of our S African adventure at the Kariega River Lodge to end the holiday on a high, and that is exactly what we experienced. In fact it was even better than we could have expected. From the moment we arrived our car was whisked away to be parked, and our luggage disappeared to our lodge. Our lodge (7) was directly next to the main building which was a bonus as I have limited mobility and it was luxurious with a strong African influence and really tastefully and ergonomically laid out. We were given a meal as soon as we arrived at about 15.00, and then told we were about to experience our first safari, which was a bonus as we thought the adventure would start the following day. We were introduced to our guide for the 4 days, appropriately called JC. I will not go in to a full detailed report, but what followed was a 1st Class experience that included 5 safari's of approx. 3 hrs that were lead by the intrepid JC. We saw elephants, lions, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, and much much more, with stops for a glass of wine watching the sunset. We could not have asked for a better guide, very knowledgeable and made sure we were all safe and comfortable, and a sense of humour which is much appreciated at 05.00. The safaris were the best experience we have had for many years. This quality of service continued throughout the whole stay, the food was excellent, the service could not have been any better and nothing was too much trouble for any member of staff. In between safaris trips on the river were provided and guided walks with your guide. I have to admit to succumbing to an afternoon nap when the staff were not entertaining or feeding us. We were allocated to a party of 6 including us and our fellow group members were a very nice family from Sweden, Mum and Dad and their two teenage daughters who were really nice and we enjoyed their company immensely, although we could not keep up with them as they partook of every adventure provided, thank you Fredrick. To some up, if you are going to South Africa and intend including a Safari, we could not recommend Kariega enough, it really made the trip and we will never forget this part of Africa. Our thanks to JC who entertained us throughout, at dinner with his comprehensive knowledge, sense of humour, and magic skills!
