We arrived at around 4pm, later than we expected because of transportation problems. We’ve heard from other guests that this was a good thing as some of the early arrivals (9am)were kept waiting until 4pm for their rooms! The hotel was easy to find and we were able to park in front of it whilst I checked us in. Check in was smooth, the staff member was pleasant and most of the hotels amenities were pointed out to us. We left the car keys in reception so somebody could park our car ($25 daily plus tax!) and another member of the team took us to our room. Our bedroom was not in the main building but next door and as soon as we entered through the front door I could smell a deep stench of damp! This made me feel queasy and being asthmatic was probably not the best place for me to be sleeping! Our room was up a flight of stairs and through a door so we left 75% of the damp smell behind, but you could still smell it in the corridor. The room was compact, with a half height sized double wardrobe (dresses trailed on the floor) a king bed, one bedside table, one lamp, a desk and chair, an alarm clock, a sink, a safe and a TV. In the wardrobe was a small table-top ironing board and iron. The bathroom had a shower and toilet. Unfortunately there was no bath, second bedside table and lamp, coffee machine, fridge or kettle, I presume because breakfast was provided. The bed was reasonable and we slept comfortably, however there was only a very thin blanket on the bed, so I found it cold with the air conditioning on, so we had to switch it off to be able to sleep. We Brits are not used to air con and in the USA the air con is always really cold! ( despite changing the temp of it several times!) Breakfast was disappointing, loud music dominated the room and it was served in the same place as the damp stench! The food on offer was limited, bread/toast, jelly, (yes jello or jelly!) yogurt, preserves, processed meats in a buffet style, which is not my favourite. Not an impressive selection and so we only ate toast on the two mornings of our three there. (Didn’t bother on the last day, wanted something more than toast!) Towels were a decent size and plentiful in the rooms; beach towels could be signed out at reception. We bought two chairs and a beach umbrella locally as it was cheaper than hiring them on the beach. We left them for the hotel only to discover that they had a small stock of them that they will lend out..so ask before you buy! All in all an ok stay, because the room was ok, (clean and quiet), but would not stay again because of the stench, the extra parking costs (previous hotels on our holiday did not charge), the lack of a pool, and the lack of amenities in the room. Miami itself? Would not return and as a well-travelled person it’s not often I say that. It was loud, it was brash and everything was in your face. Drinks were over priced and nothing to me, was of quality. Art Deco buildings of yesteryear polluted by the noise of modern society.
"They are charging my credit card and I've been home over a week"
The hotel staff was friendly. Location was nice but why I'm being charged for others transportation when I'm checked out and home is a big question mark. Dispute w credit card company and closed card. More than one charge since I've been gone over a week. SMH. Not great all in all.
Spent a couple of days in South Beach, Miami. We stayed at the Ocean Five on beach drive. Location is good with easy access to the beach and for driving there. The hotel is made up of four smaller older hotels. The first room we were given was on the third floor and no elevators in the building. We had no view and the room had a lot of hidden mold. Within 15 minutes my sinuses were burning from breathing in mold spores. The included breakfast was cookies, small donuts, yogurt, and toast you had to make yourself. We went to the front desk and they moved us to another room. Rooms was fine, not great. Building was so old that the floors were sloping in some areas. Lots of upgrades and repairs needed here. Not worth the $200/night we paid. I give the hotel two stars only because of the close location to the beach and how quiet the area was at night. Would not recommend this hotel (at least the building we were in).
clean room; spacious, everyone very nice and helpful. Andy was very efficient and personable. We have stayed at Ocean five in the past and alway recommend it to anyone who stays on the beach. Just a relaxing place close to the beach away from the mayhem of partying sobe
"Great location and a place to sleep"
Andy at the front desk was fantastic as was Angel both professional and very helpful and friendly. It was a good start for our trip. We booked somewhat in the last minute kind of thing to go on a quick 2-day beach warmup trip from New Jersey with another couple. I use to live in Brickell and am very familiar with South Beach and the location is preferable to us as we always go to the beach at 2nd street. Its a locals area of the beach. Ocean 5 is South of 5th and anything South of 5th is good for me for location. Ocean Ave is walkable from here and you can get to Lincoln road as well. Staff was great at the hotel the room, however, was certainly average. Beds and mattresses show wear and age. The flooring in my 1st level room was in level and literally had a hill into the bathroom. The shower water pressure, well, let's just say there was none. The kitchenette was perfect and useful for our needs. Again the room was clean just showed its age a bit. when you open the shade I was greeted with an Alley that had piles of trash and a giant tank of nitrogen as well as a little break area for the workers next door I assumed. Stay here for the location it's really perfect for that for a few days. If your stay is longer than that I would recommend one of the larger properties in the area for accommodations.
