"All we'd hoped for"
We had a wonderful experience on our first trip to Disney World. We stayed in a room with bunk beds, which allowed all four of us to sleep well and be ready for full days at the parks. The drive time to parks from Animal Kingdom Lodge usually took about 20-25 minutes each way. It was a lovely hotel, but next time we do WDW, we might stay at a less expensive hotel because we didn't spend much time in our room. We prefer spending our time at the parks.
"Worth the value"
Great hotel! Stayed here as we were very interested in the animal theme of the resort. The prices per night were fair and on the lower end of the spectrum as far as deluxe resorts go. As we didn't arrive to the hotel until after 6PM, it was a pleasant surprise to see that our room was automatically assigned to us already and we could head straight to our room and use our magic bands instead of having to wait in line for the check-in desk. Our room was nice, although we did not get the King bed we requested. Instead, we got a room with one queen and a bunk bed, which was a little strange because our party was just two adults. I'm not going to lie, I did climb to the top of the bunk bed to see how it felt, but decided to come back down in fear of breaking the bed. Ha ha.. I suppose the only negative during The our stay was that our luggage was not delivered to the lodge correctly as there was a miscommunication with bell services. We had to wait a while for our luggage to arrive as it was delivered to the wrong resort. Oh, and I should also mention that this resort is farther away from most of the theme parks than the other deluxe hotels (other than DAK of course). Other than that.. As far as the restaurants go, they were all great. We tried the Mara, Boma, and Sanaa and had no complaints. I would stay here again in the future.
"How to see the Animal Kingdom Lodge Animals for Free ( Secrets below )"
Secret #1 You are allowed to go here for free ( if you are eating at one of the restaurants or the cafe ). Tell the drive-up entrance guard that you are going to eat at "Mara" ( the cafe inside the hotel) then they will let you in. We usually eat at the Mara cafe. Park for free in the giant parking lot then walk up and into the front entrance of the hotel. Secret #2 Stop where they check people in and ask for an "Animal Viewing Guide" ( PS don't put on your Dumbo hat and tell them your not staying here at the hotel ) The Animal Viewing Guide is a checklist and information guide sheet of all the big the animals on the property. This guide is a great souvenir and its really fun for kids and adults to find the animals and check them off.. Secret #3 Next Walk strait back, down the steps and strait out the back of the hotel. Here you can immediately see many animals like: African Warthogs, Thompsons Gazelles, Giraffes, Water Buffalos, Ostrich, Wildebeast, Impalas, ( way to many to list here). I got a picture with a warthog in back of me. When you walk out back you will see guides ( dressed like forest rangers) These are genuine guides from Africa who know all the animals. They will answer questions and they will help you find animals to check off on your list ( if you ask them ). Secret #4 During the day go up the second level and you will see many, many animals out of the giant hall windows. Every so often they have balconies you can walk outside on. They have large chairs and you can sit and relax while you watch the animals. Special Note: At 5 PM to 5:30 PM they put out food for the animals in front of the balconies and picture windows. Dont miss it, this its amazing, you can get some really good pictures with African animals right behind you in the photo. If you come like 3-4 pm you can see and do everything. BTW The second best restaurant at Disney is here. its called Boma. and it is authentic African food. You will definitely need reservations. Secret #5 Nighttime Fireside Stories When you first walk outside the back of the hotel you will see a fire pit. Here at 7:30 PM a real storyteller from Africa tells stories around the campfire. Its an Experience, bring the kids ! We LOVE this place. So, You can get a room here for $275 to $2,700 per night or you can go use the tips above to see the animals for free. :)
"Family trip to Disneyworld"
From the moment you arrive at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, you will be amazed at the main reception area, which is simply stunning. (If you are looking for the hidden Mickeys, look up, just a small clue). The rooms are large enough for a family of four, two adults and two young children, but may be a bit of a squeeze for two adults and two teenagers, we booked two adjoining rooms, and were very pleased we did. Both were clean, and serviced every day. Each room comes with a large TV, fridge, hairdryer(in the bathroom), iron, ironing board and safe (all in the wardrobe). The resort also has two restaurants serving African fare, both of which get very, very busy, morning, noon and night, so pre booking is strongly advised. There is an additional quick service restaurant which can get busy around 8:30am and noon. This serves food such as waffles, chicken nuggets, burgers and fries. The pool area is fairly large, with a slide for the younger children. Family entertainment is provided around the pool most afternoons, from quizzes to dancing. There is also various shaded areas, access to toilets, baby changing area and showers available. Next to these is a games room for guests and a large pool bar to cater for most families needs. The resort also boasts an area that houses a selection of animals from the plains of Africa, that can be seen from selected rooms and various viewing areas. The main viewing area can be accessed from the main reception area, and includes a fire pit for the cooler evenings. This area is also usually manned by someone who can give you information about the animals on view. There is a shop that offers goods from traditional African art to Disney's own bespoke products. Lastly the resort offers free transport busses to each of the other parks, which generally run in 15 minute intervals. All in all, this is a great Disney resort to stay in, we have enjoyed staying here twice now, and are looking forward to a third time.
"First stay in Animal Kingdom Lodge"
This Disney family vacation was a gift from my parents. All 7 of us went (myself, my husband, our 3 boys and both of my parents). I have traveled to Kenya twice for work and love it so my mother wanted to splurge on rooms with a Savannah view so I would feel like I was in Africa. I will begin with some positives and say that the Savannah view exceeded all of our expectations! There were many animals to view and we were even given a guide booklet that described the animals we would see. The pool was very clean and there were always at least 3 lifeguards on duty at one time and there were fun interactive games and activities for the children certain times of the day. We were immensely disappointed upon arrival to learn that our guaranteed adjoining rooms were not available. We used a Disney agent from "Ears of Experience". We reiterated multiple times the importance of adjoining rooms and each time were assured we would have it. We did not get adjoining rooms and surprisingly, Disney did nothing for us to make up for this huge flaw. The rooms themselves were clean and comfortable. Our rooms had a queen bed and bunk beds. I was happy that bed rails were delivered to our room and installed. I expected a microwave and was disappointed that there wasn't one. I found the bathroom to be incredibly dark. I thought I was being extra particular, but all 4 adults on the trip mentioned the super dark bathroom at one point or the other. I found the hotel gift shop to be top notch. You can get everything from high end items, to a basic souvenir, to beer, wine, liquor and a wide variety of food items including frozen meals (hence my great disappointment at the lack of a microwave). Something I did not anticipate was the distance from AKL to the parks. We spent more time than I would have liked travelling in the bus to and from the parks.
