Over Royal Lahaina Resort

Our favorite

"Dated. Visited for brother's wedding."

A little dated. Here for family member's wedding. Gazebo seems to be permanently assembled, sat 30 easily (looks like can seat 2-3x that outdoors) at lawn. Standard wedding time seems to be 4pm, which for us was hottest part of day with no cloud cover. Stayed in cottages - they're spread out widely, so keep that in mind for large groups. Some have kitchens, others don't. Ours had a kitchen and stovetop, but no oven. Safeway is only 3 miles away, and Costco is near the airport, if you plan ahead (airport and Lahaina are 30-45 minutes apart). Breakfast buffet had nice choices (eggs Benedict were good), but pricey - $25 per person, kids 5 and under eat free with paying adult. Self-park is added $15 a day. They'll valet for you at $15 the first night, then $20 each night after. You might think not that much more expensive for valet, but if you go in/out a few times during the day, and you feel weird not tipping a couple of dollars each time they get the car for you, it adds up to quite a bit more than the $15 self rate. There is beach access, but no beach activities here - Kaanapali is nearest beach (less than a mile away) to do catamaran dinner cruises, parasailing, shore scuba diving. Fitness center is small - 2 treadmills, some weights, etc. Remember that many visitors are from the mainland, meaning there are surprisingly a lot of people awake at 6 and 7am wanting to work out. You may want to plan on an afternoon session if you don't want it to be crowded. There are a lot of people at the luau, but they tell you when to go get food and they have 6 lines to get food. The show was great and one of the best fire dancers I've seen. The MC was some blend of Wayne Newton and Don Ho, but it worked

"Tired and dated"

We stayed in the cottages, which were tired and run down with extremely noisy, old air conditioning. It was so noisy we had to ask for a portable fan to be brought to the room so we could use that at night instead. The food was very average and expensive. The pool area had no atmosphere and no shade whatsoever. The hotel is also a little out of the way, requiring a 15 minute walk to the whalers village area, or free trolley ride into town. The one thing going for the hotel was the beautiful beach and snorkeling at its doorstep. However if travelling to Maui again I would definitely choose a different hotel

This was not my first time attending a luau and I can can say my first experience was much more eventful. The dancers were good but.... the male dancers appeared to be very young and small framed. The food was excellent and of course we enjoyed the open bar. They did show us a pig but that's about it it was very quick no presentation. The sunset was beautiful. Had I not had a different experience years ago I would have given it a better rating. Oh I must say the fire dancing was AWESOME....

"Beautiful beach, a bit away from the action"

We stayed at the Royal Lahaina and really enjoyed our stay. The rates were very reasonable, staff was friendly and room was clean. The staff at the onsite restaurant wasn't very friendly and the pool was less than desirable for a family. It's way too small and in an awkward location right in front of the outdoor restaurant diners. We did not end up using the pool at all, fortunately the beautiful ocean was perfect for our family. The hotel is situated out of the action so the beach actually ends up being a perfect spot with plenty of room to enjoy beach fun. There is a nice walking path along the beach and golf course that we enjoyed each morning along with many other walkers and joggers.

"Decent for a budget stay"

Came here with a friend for a grad trip. We wanted to visit Maui but definitely were not going to stay at any of the finer options Maui has to offer. Royal Lahaina fit the bill. Nice because it is on Kaanapali Beach. The resort is clean and seems to be recently redone. The lanai's (decks) are boast gorgeous views. Even partial views are incredible. The rooms are a nice size, with good bathrooms. The pool has no shade. Kaanapali beach is pretty harsh in terms of lighting. I would definitely pay to rent an umbrella if you are planning on spending more than an hour on the beach. Staff is pretty friendly. I booked a 'double' room and was told that only meant it guaranteed double occupancy. Ended up with a king bed. Not particularly happy about this, but ended up working out. The restaurant on the property is not good, but is convenient. We ate there for lunch one day. If you have not visited Maui before, I would highly recommend thinking about staying in the Wailea/Makena/Kihei area!! I found that every single day my friend and I were making the hour long trek to that part of the island. In summary, this resort is nothing special but works well as a base for an incredible vacation to Maui. The rooms are clean and spacious, with beautiful deck views!
