Over Moana Surfrider, a Westin Resort & Spa

"Perfect start to our Hawaiian Adventure"
I surprised my girlfriend with a trip to Hawaii - what she didn't know is that she would soon become my fiancé. I had booked this hotel based on its classic and timeless look as well as location and reviews. Whilst it 'may' not be billed as the best hotel in Waikiki I certainly think it is. I had booked a standard room but on arrival they upgraded us to the partial sea view room in the new refurbished tower block. After seeing the basic rooms in the traditional main building part of the hotel I'm so glad we had the newer rooms due to the modern amenities and sheer size, not to mention huge balcony with a very clear view of the sea, not only partial! The bed was amazing as was the daily housekeeping - the room was perfectly spotless every day. The hotel restaurant offers a great selection of food for evening dinners as does the beach bar/grill. The pool is small-average size however due to the type of hotel it is, there are a lot of couples or older adults. Whilst we are not opposed to kids, we didn't see many of them around the pool or hotel so it has a calm atmosphere. We were bowled over by the lobby area, its simply stunning with views out to the sea as soon as you enter the front doors. It has a central location on the Waikiki beach strip and isn't far from great restaurants or local activities. Hats off to the concierge team, they arranged some great excursions for us which we felt were reasonably priced too. I am looking to return to Hawaii in a few years with my parents and I will definitely choose the Moana Surfrider again - a jewel in the crown that is Hawaii.
The Moana Surfrider is a beautiful hotel in a fantastic location but does not provide value for money. The room we had was very small and while marketed as city view, the only window was located in the bathroom and even then only provided a narrow view of the street if you were 7 feet tall. The outside bar area is in a great location and provides plenty of shelter from the sun. The hotel is located right on the beach. The pool is small and was even closed one morning for water aerobics while kids looked on enviously but were not allowed in. Also the whole pool area is small and unless you are up early forget about getting a lounge which are reserved all day by guests putting towels on them and then not being seen for hours at a time. Staff are not interested in moving towels, despite signage to the contrary. On a positive note the outdoor dining area is a great place to eat and watch the sunset and the rocking chairs on the front deck and out the back are a great place to relax and watch the world go by.
"Historic Moana Surfrider Hotel "
When I first looked at the prices for The Moana Surfrider Hotel, I honestly can say that it was above my budget. I thought long and hard about spending so much money for a Hotel room. After acouple days I said, to hell with it, we work so hard and deserve to be pampered! With one click of the mouse we had our reservation set and were about to take a vacation of a lifetime! Just remember that you are not just getting a place to lay your head, you are booking an beautiful, amazing resort. Right on the beach at Waikiki, The Moana Surfrider Hotel is an Historical site that first opened in 1901. When the hotel first opened there were houses, taro flelds and rice patties all around. A stark difference to the breathtaking beauty of the area today. Please look up the history of The Moana Surfrider Hotel and you will really fall in love with this Beautiful hotel. Located directly on the beach at Waikiki, we were able to walk to all of the bars, shops and restaurants that we wanted to visit. The only time we used our rental car was to drive to different areas on Oahu. Like Lahina for a Luau and the Kohola Ranch for horseback riding. Also to Pearl Harbor. The restraunt and beach bar at the hotel have great choices to offer. We had breakfast one morning and just shared a plate and it was plenty for both of us. Our room was beautiful, even though we decided on a room with a city view, at night the lights and palm trees were pretty. The shower in our bathroom was great and there was a small refrigerator in room to keep our beverages cold. We look forward to our next visit to The Moana Surfrider Hotel, next time I plan to visit the pool bar more!!
"Historic hotel in the centre of Waikiki"
Having never been to Hawaii before, all of my friends independently said to stay here. I guess having my expectations set so high I was probably a touch disappointed. Having said that, you could not fault the Moana Surfrider. From the moment you walk in you can see the history dripping everywhere. The place is beautiful! We stayed in a tower wing room with a diamond head and ocean view. The view was simply amazing and if you can afford this I would highly recommend. The rooms were only of a medium appointment with everything you need, but in comparison to other high end hotels (including other Westin resorts) it was only average. The history of the beach bar under the historic banyan tree with the direct access to Waikiki beach, combined with the central proximity to all the shopping and dining the area has to offer makes this hotel fantastic. We only ate at the beach bar for lunches and a few cocktails, otherwise the breakfast queues were between 15 and 30 minutes to two days we tried, plus twice as much as neighbouring buffets (I can't comment on the difference in quality though as I didn't eat here). The food at the beach bar was acceptable, but the menu seemed tired. The drinks were well priced at happy hour between 3 and 5 PM. The pool is only average, but when you have the beach so close, who needs the pool. The gym was clean and well equipped and suits most holiday-maker's gym routine. The lady on the tour desk seemed disinterested in trying to help although she provided us with brochures.
The best thing about the Moana Surfrider is their staff who go out of their way to make sure you have a great stay. The hotel is on the beach with many public areas to sit and relax. It's in the middle of the shopping strip with restaurants and cafes close by. I enjoyed the meal at the verandah restaurant too. I would have given 5 stars but for the very thin walls between rooms in the tower wing. Conversations in the room next door were easily heard in my room.
