"Golden Eagle, November, 2017"
This review is based on my experience at the Golden Eagle in November of 2017. Staff members were polite and courteous. The room I stayed in (224 of the Alpine section) was large and bed was extremely comfortable. It was also nice being able to swim in the indoor pool until 9pm. Bathroom was somewhat run down, and some of the tiles in the indoor pool were cracked, loose, or missing. I figured that a nightly rate of $130 was slightly high, but not completely unreasonable for Stowe, if the resort was a nice place. When calling to reserve the room, I was told that the grand total for 2 nights was $322, when I thought the price would be around $286. ($130 x 2= $260 + 10% tax= $286). The difference was due to a 'resort surcharge.' They told me about this fee, but not until I was JUST about to give them the credit card information to hold the room. Breakfast was also not included in the rate. Overall, the Golden Eagle was a pretty nice place, but although it is not THE most expensive hotel in Stowe, it is still quite expensive.
"Needs improvement "
We stayed at fireside apartments #140, across the street from the main resort, we need drive to use the pool, breakfast etc... big apartment full kitchen 2 bedrooms king size bed and 2 twin and a sofa bed in the living room. Kitchen from the 70s with painted cabinets, with dishwasher (that was full of dirty dishes when we arrive )the heat/ac from the living room loud sounds like we have a generator going in the living room, the bedrooms are nice size and updated, but again the heat/ac from master room sounds like a generator going in the our bedroom very loud! The bathroom in the 2nd level is some how updated but was some peeling painting, stain wallpaper, and stain between the tiles in the shower (gross), and we found a bugger in one of the twin bed sheet right under the pillow, and one of the blankets was dirty with some stain(so room service is not done very often). But overall huge apartment with fire place and access from grilling 1st level porch. We were very disappointed to find the dirty stuff when we arrived. The main resort was under renovation that’s why they sent us across the street, but we were not notified at the booking about that situation and we did not book the apartment.
"1 night stay "
Stayed 1 night while in town.. good location and very friendly staff!! Even though it’s an older resort, the grounds were very nicely maintained, my room was updated and spacious, and parking was right in front of the room.. the room was clean with a nice bed and good heating.. the bathroom was clean, but there was 1 towel folded in the corner by the sink that was very dusty as if it had been sitting there for a very long time... also my bathtub looked clean minus about five long black hairs that were there when I arrived.. otherwise all in all for the price I was happy with it.
"Good situation "
We stayed here in October and our room was in an annex at the back of the hotel. The room was fine but basic. We had a twin bedded room. It was a bit difficult getting our luggage to the room as we had to go down steps and then there was a gravel path. The hotel did not include breakfast but we brought our own cereals. The hotel indoor pool was lovely but no one around to ask about towels, lockers etc. The hotel was about a 10 minute walk to Stowe which is a lovely place. Unfortunately we only stayed one night which wasn’t really enough to explore the area ( blame our tour operator for that). There were pots of coffee in reception but not all the time. Most of the hotels we stayed at did have a constant supply of coffee. The WiFi was free. One slight niggle got home (UK) to find they had charged us $8 for something. No idea what as they said we were all paid up as we left!!! Possibly if we come back here we would get a better room.
After the massive storm that cut power all over Stowe we werer without power or water while staying in Stowe Hollow. Lisa very generously let us use the Golden Eagle's Spa showers, despite damage to their facilities. Since this kind action represents how the Eagle cares for their customers (potential and actual) and the facilities were clean and extensive in the Spa, we have no hesitation in recommending it. Thank you Lisa.
