"Great location - window bed room is a must"
The hotel is located right across Lake/Whacker from the Chicago River and only a couple of blocks from the L (most lines, about 4 blocks from the Blue Line) and therefore is a prime location. There are a lot of great restaurants nearby including Fisk & Co in the lobby/storefront of the hotel. The hotel offers valet and there is a structure nearby but who drives in the loop? Needless to say it's expensive to park so don't do it. I can't say how expensive the room was as I used points. My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights for fun and it was great. The rooms with window boxes have views of the river and are highly recommended as it's quite a delight to sit in the window and people watch, or read a book, etc. The hotel isn't modern by any stretch of the imagination but it is funky and fun. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom spacious enough but nothing special. The floor we stayed on was quiet. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful in recommending places to eat, etc. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
"We can't wait to go back"
This was my first trip to Chicago. We decided to take the kids for a long weekend to see Hamilton and I had no idea what to expect. Everything was perfect. Our room was adorable and comfortable and quiet other than the occasional distant siren. The location is ideal. We walked to the theater, to the Navy Pier, to the Aquarium and to the shops. The staff was so polite and friendly. The wine hour in the lobby is a nice perk too! We called a couple times asking for items we forgot and they were brought up immediately. The only problem is that this hotel has spoiled me for any others in Chicago. We are already planning our trip for next year.
Very good location, friendly staff, and that's about it. I have stayed at a few Kimpton hotels in other cities and always find their rooms beautifully and uniquely decorated. I booked this hotel with the same expectation in mind, and was really disappointed. The decor of our room (we had a two queen beds room) is not up to par with any Kimpton I had stayed at. It was dated and lack of character. The bathroom had a really small vanity top (see photo). There was no room to put our personal toiletries and makeup. Every morning/night my friend and I had to take turns doing our skincare/makeup routines and pack everything up when we finished. There were four small bottles of toiletries in the bathroom when we arrived - a shampoo, a hair conditioner, two shower gel, and no body lotion. Careless. We had to leave a note for the housekeeper who left us with a few the next day. Like all other Kimpton hotels I stayed at, they do not put a coffeemaker in your room unless you request one. First night we called to request one, and naturally tipped the staff who brought us a Keurig with coffee pods, sugar, creamer, and paper cups. The coffee pods and paper cups were not replenished the next day when they made the room, so we had to call and request. The staff brought cups and coffee pods with about 20-30 packs of sugars but no creamer. On the third day we called to request some creamer, and the staff brought a whole new set of coffeemaker and everything. Everybody was confused. So for a three-night stay we had to call them three times and tip them three times. Not impressed. People may say we didn't have to tip if we're not happy but we felt it might not be the staff's fault - they were probably given too much work to do their job properly. The first night we were there, the people in the next room(s) were having a party and made loud noise till about 1:30 a.m. I don't think the hotel patrolled our floor in that three-hour span, if at all. Just like other Kimptons, this hotel doesn't give you free bottled water. They put $7 bottled water in your room. We didn't touch them and bought a gallon jug from a nearby 7-Eleven instead. When I checked out, I told the front desk clerk that I did not use any bottled water. He told me everything was fine, and printed me a receipt for the room charges. A few days later I checked my credit card activities and found a separate $7 charge posted to my card two days after I checked out. I contacted Kimpton and they acknowledged it was likely a mistake and reversed the charge. Interesting enough, when I checked out of the Kimpton in Boston last time they also tried to charge me $7 for a bottle of water which was never there to being with (I showed them a video of the room I took when I first arrived, showing there was only one bottle of water, not two). I think for me, if I were to stay at another Kimpton again, I would request that they remove all the bottled water first so that there would not be any dispute.
8 rooms booked for a stay with friends. Great service and lovely rooms. Situated close to the L train line and close to most attractions. Would definitely recommend this hotel. Very reasonable price too.
"good hotel downtown"
I was in Chicago for business and wanted a hotel downtown. This hotel is in a great location and close to many great steak houses. I think there is a little up charge for a river view, but I think it is worth it. The rooms tend to run a little small. I don't think they are close to the advertised 300+ sqft. I think they are more like 200 to 250 sqft. Overall, it is a very nice hotel for the money and for shorter stays. One thing that didn't go well is their Wi-Fi. For some reason, I had no luck.
