"Little attention to detail in reno"
My family stayed in Le Meridien Delfina for two nights. At first glance, the hotel is recently renovated and models a hip vibe. But upon closer inspection, it's clear that they skimped a bit on the renovation and left some shabbiness behind. Using our Platinum SPG status, we requested a suite for the stay out of our seven guaranteed free upgrades per year promo. Having been upgraded to a suite when available many times, we were disappointed with what we got. It was a long, oblong single room with no partitioning of the bedroom from the "living" area (which was a bit disappointing) and with a "handicapped accessible" bathroom (though given the lip on shower I don't see how a handicapped individual could have used it). It's hard to complain about a free upgrade, but this is one of the weaker "suites" that we've stayed in. The room decor was cool; it some funky art and modern wall coverings, and the bathroom was upgraded with granite sinks and marble tile. Despite the cool vibe, there were a few obvious flaws with the recent renovation. There was a huge crack in our sink and one of the handles was clearly broken. Our shower was really short, and I was barely able to fit under the shower head despite only being 5'2. The drain to the tub was one of the cruddy flat rubber stoppers you buy for .99 at the drug store, and the drain to the shower was sunken in such a way that you weren't able to stand directly under the shower head without standing on the hole in the tile. The basket to hold the toiletries in the shower was broken, so when you put the bottles in the basket they slid right onto the floor. Some of the old vent coverings weren't replaced and were really dusty and/or discolored. We were also surprised by the lack of storage space/dressers in the large room--we didn't have an obvious place to put most our clothes! In addition, we were put off by the fact that when we arrived in our room, there was a bottle of champagne sitting on the table with a welcome note. We thought it was strange, but assumed that it was perhaps our welcome gift. Luckily, we didn't dig in, because and a few minutes later someone showed up to take it away. Apparently it was intended to be delivered to someone else and they somehow did't figure that out until after we'd settled into the room. It just felt weird. We ended up on a lower floor and were disappointed to find that the view was largely obstructed by some structural building elements. In addition, our proximity to the road made for very noisy nights--the glass did little to stop the honking or screeching of speeding cars. We also thought the resort fee was strange given the lack of stand-out amenities. The pool was underwhelming at best, and the gym was fine...nothing to write home about. We determined that the fee really covered the "free" valet parking. I say just call a spade a spade and charge for parking...this is not a resort hotel! A bit perk was the location, given the proximity to the beach and town center. In retrospect, I wish we had asked for a different room. Perhaps other rooms were better taken care of, and a higher floor would have deceased the traffic noise we encountered. All in all, our stay was fine but nothing special.
Let's start with the good. The location is great. You can walk to the beach and some restaurants and stores. The hotel offers a shuttle and a car to drive you locally (within 2 miles) but not always available. The golf cart like shuttle is run by a different company so get their cell and you can text them when you want a pick up. Something I did not find out until almost our last day. The hotel also rents beach bikes and helmets for free. The staff is very friendly and courteous. Richard the concierge was very helpful every time I called or stopped by. The food is very good but pricey. The view was nicer than expected. Although not listed as an Ocean view we did have a pretty good view of the Ocean. Keep in mind the hotel sits across from a high school. Luckily for us it was Spring Break so there was no kids and no noise. Some issues we had was our room was not ready because we were told a lot of guests had a late check out. But they did give us a $50 voucher. The rooms have only 3 small draws so pack accordingly. My biggest issue was the AC. The first 2 nights it was hot. We asked that someone come and look at it but they did not come until the 4th day. They fixed it and it was cool. The 5th night it was not working again. A different technician came up and he fixed it on the 6th night. The 7th night it was not working again. Another tech came up and tried to fix it but it did not work. Opening the patio door didn't help to cool the room because it was on the other side of the room. When I checked out I told them what had happened. The person at the front desk was very nice and took off 2 breakfasts and 2 lunches that we had eaten in the hotel. I appreciated that but told her to make a note to fix it for the next person. So hopefully that was resolved. All in all the hotel is nice and worth staying.
"Excellent Customer Service"
The hotel is stylish, smaller, and has an upscale feel. What impressed me most was the service. When I step off the elevator, I am greeted by name by the concierge (Hugo), and he and the rest of the staff went out of their way to attend to my families needs. The hotel has about 50 bicycles for the exclusive use of their guests. The bicycles are free of charge, and we used them everyday, for the short ride to the beach or Santa Monica pier. Overall, we had a fantastic vacation. I highly recommend this hotel.
"Difficult to rate..."
We stayed as a family with two young children, my husband having stayed here before on business and loved it. Plus points: 1. Location, although a little out of town, was good for us, Walk straight down the road and you are at Shutters on the Beach. Five minutes west and you are at the centre of town with lots of restaurants and shops to wander around. 2. Room - a unique V-shaped suite meant that you felt as if you almost had two rooms and had some degree of privacy from the children. Mini-fridge and two TVs. 3. Staff - very welcoming, helpful and eager to please. And the negatives... 1. The room was a little tired - cracked sink, tap not quite working and no view to speak of. Coffee makers were only available on request (we found out by looking at other Tripadvisor reviews). Coffee was available in the lobby each morning, which necessitated a visit to bring it back to the room. 2. The pool was ridiculously small for the size of the hotel - more like an extra large plunge pool - and deep throughout, so not suitable for children. On one of the days that we were there, there were insufficient sunbeds and the pool was filled with about 30 people. The pool area itself is shaded and is a little like sitting in a wind tunnel. 3. The lobby, restaurant and bar area are one and the same. The entrance door opens automatically whenever anyone comes in and the pool door is at the opposite end, which means that it is cold and draughty drinking or eating in the hotel. 4. A very high service charge for things that many families with children cannot use (wifi is included for gold members anyway so not a bonus for us) Would we stay here again? The location and staff made it an enjoyable stay but I think it is better suited to business travellers than families and expensive for what you get.
"Family vacation "
A very nice place to stay. Great service, comfortable rooms. The best part was the valet parking, so prompt and professional, we felt like movie stars! I loved the bed, but it was too soft for husband. I would have given it 5 stars, except for the very uninspired view from our balcony - of the apartments next door.
