"Great Starwood hotel four blocks from the beach."
We really enjoyed this hotel. We chose it because it's a Starwood. The décor was casual but classy. Room was clean as was the bathroom. The rooms are quite small so if you're with the family (as we were), just don't plan to hang in the room that much. We had a lovely view of the ocean (even if it's a few blocks away.) The staff was all very friendly and helpful. Jimmy, one of the concierges was so helpful and just fun to speak to. The gentleman in charge of the Starwood breakfast was also great. The kids enjoyed the pool, although it's quite small. One drawback is that there is NO hot tub. There's a courtesy car that can take you places which is helpful, but be warned, the traffic getting down to Santa Monica Pier is RI-DICULOUS! Sometimes it's just easier to walk. Also the pier is fun to see but it's wall-to-wall people, so head down to Manhattan or Hermosa beach if you want some sand to yourself. This hotel is close to the 3rd street promenade which we walked to several times. Lots of restaurants / shops, but they're also (like everything else in SM) super BUSY! I really like the Meridian brand and this hotel was a great choice. You avoid the crowds of the beachfront hotels and it has a nice, relaxing vibe.
"Stay Somewhere Else"
I checked out today after two nights. As there are so many other choices in Santa Monica, I will not be returning. The positive: the front desk staff and housekeeping. The negatives: Valet run by a third party. Very disorganized. The shuttle we were told about was never available. No SPG floor or lounge. No continental breakfast for Gold or Platinum members. I needed a room with two queen beds and none were available. I was charged $25 per night for a rollaway. That should not have happened. No coffee in room. Finally, the glass of wine I wanted was $18 per glass and the free drink voucher only allowed for a beverage up to $15 per gallon. No opportunity to pay the difference. Lucky for us we did not spend much time at the hotel. The $28 per day added fee was not worth it. No news papers available. Do yourself a favor and stay elsewhere. This hotel is way below SPG and Marriott standards.
"Pros & cons, a good hotel but slightly disappointing given the claimed status"
It all started with the reservation. Was assigned a kings bed when I looked for a queens one. Called the hotel the day before, asked for the change, which seemed possible after an availability check. When we arrived at the hotel, car service was prompt and efficient. A good point. Front desk not so busy, yet the welcome greeting seemed a little bit rude even though it proposed a welcome drink! First surprise. The second one was that the room change had not been performed, and that despite arriving at 4PM, the room was not ready! Nice... As no option available apart from waiting in the lobby, with no clear timing on the room availability, we took the chance to take some of the bikes and go ride along the Santa Monica & Venice beach. A good point, given the fact that the hotel is not directly on the sea side. When we came back, 8PM, the room was ready, but luggages had not been brought in... kind of disappointing! Room was ok, not huge but acceptable. As mentioned in one of the reviews, no vanity kit at all. In some three stars, you sometimes have more than what is offered here! No opinion on the breakfast, as we preferred to go on the beach and have one there, just sitting in front of the ocean and watching Santa Monica beach wake-up! Check out was efficient, and a little bit more caring given my remarks on the check in experience. A final good point thus. Overall a good stay yet not exceptional. The hotel is clearly relying on its position in Santa Monica to attract enough customers...
"Lots of things wrong with this hotel"
It was not the first time I stayed in the Merideien but as it is reasonably central and "relatively" affordable I booked again. With affordable I mean $350 ex tax plus resort fee so not really affordable. Next time I will pay more and stay somewhere else. Check in went quick but problem one started quick afterwards. Only one elevator was working and till I left it still wasn't working so people queing all the time. At check out even 30 min. Instead of taking elevator I walked the emergency exit stairs but that was because I was on floor 2, usually I prefer high floors but luckilly this time I wasn't. Room is not big but had balcony with view over pool and a little bit of sea in distance. Bed was comfortable. I don't understand why this hotel charges a resort fee as it is no resort. Yes you get a glass of bubbly at arrival but I can do without that. The pool is small and not very inviting, WIFI i have allready as i am gold member. Only reason is maybe the bikes, but mine was not a very good one. The saddle started to move all direction after cycling a bit on it and no gears and breaks not working very well.. The pool is another let down. Small, full of screaming children so no use at all. Lobby is not very inviting, does look a bit dated. For me no Meridien Santa Monica anymore.
"Good but Check your credit card on return !"
Great hotel booked via Hotwire for £113 per night which was a bargain and prepaid for in advance . We choose this as it wasn't far to travel to the airport . Pool lovely , check in great , free parking . One coffee voucher so the day of checkout there was no free coffee. The only problem I had was once back home in the uk a charge of two amount of $ 57.10 and $0.25 appeared. I know there was a resort fee which was something like $27 per room per night , but this doesn't explain the other charges . I never charged anything to my card and I'm yet to receive a reply for these unknown charges
