Came up for a long weekend with friends. Pros: Nice. Clean. Comfortable beds. Higher end bathroom amenities. Walking/next door to some good restaurants, shops. Cons: My room was near the laundry room and was noisy in the evening. Horrible highway construction on both sides of the entrance to the hotel (not hotels fault/project). Weird bar area. Pro/con: Very pet friendly and saw several dogs in the pool area. Near downtown Carmel- could walk but probably a mile or so. Would stay here again.
"Going downhill fast....."
Have stayed here several times over the years, 2 yrs ago the hotel was in prime condition, clean, floors in lounge shined to high gloss, attentive friendly staff, excellent food, guests recognized and upgraded. What a shock this year, the place is rundown, dining room breakfast greeter seemed more interested in talking to another staff member than being attentative to other guests. Carpet in some rooms stained, the first room we checked into had an awful order as did the area where we parked our car. People had eaten dinner by the pool last night and this morning on the way to breakfast the trash and dirty dishes were still there. Over cleanliness and food quality has really gone downhill as well as public areas and staff. I would stay some place else like the Normandy inn or other cute boutique hotels in town, this once beautiful hotel is showing obvious signs of neglect!
Hotel has been nicely updated, rooms were very clean. Location was excellent as it was only 15-20 mins from Monterey and located right off Hwy 1. Number of restaurants located within walking distance. Only an hour from Big Sur. Was great value for the money and would definitely stay at this hotel again.
Man I really wanted to love this place. Jose Ortega ruined this entire experience for my daughter & I. The rest of the staff was incredible. We stop in Carmel often. I am a single mom with a 6yo child. I have some health stuff going on so I am really careful about things like cleanliness & food. I was too sick to go on our Spring Break vacation so we decided to try for a night in Carmel. I read the reviews carefully and decided to stay here over the Hyatt because it looked like it would get more sun (that is true, it is above the fog belt). The cleanliness was not great, my room rug had a squishy feel, the drapes had ketchup all over them, the tv was 19" (yes! hilarious I know), the pool was warm & crowded, the stairs - no elevator (I carried my cooler and bags in 3 trips) were LOUD ALL NIGHT, the poolside area needs repainting and a deep clean, lots of little gross things. (The flowers by the pool were gorgeous though). My folio was sent via email. My credit card charge was different (I rarely match these things so make are you check if you stay here). I emailed them 2 weeks later. I got a reply stating I had opened two water bottles. 1 minute later a new folio appeared in my email. Suspicious much? Clearly I didn't drink the water bottles, I had brought all that food & water knowing they had no poolside service and that with a 6yo I would be stuck at the pool for a large part of the day. I emailed back to say they were mistaken. And you know what Mr Ortega said? That I absolutely opened the bottles and refilled them. Really? This is the same Jose Ortega that the front desk assured me would get back to me about my car suffering $800 worth of damages in the parking lot from a drunk person coming back late (the spots are TINY); he never did. But he DID get back to me to insist I am lying about drinking his water bottles and to send a new folio. Unreal actually. The stress of my car being dinged, the sheer lack of security & attention to cleanliness &now having a human being in customer service insist that I am lying (after I wrenched my wrist carrying that cooler up and down the stairs with no help) is so outrageous it would be funny if it didn't cause me stress. Luckily my credit card company believes me and took care of the $8 charge. I think the rule of thumb here is that it is a person operating under FRAUD that would declare another person a liar. Otherwise for $8 wouldn't it be better as a customer service business to offer the client the benefit of doubt, instead of replying guns blazing we had opened two water bottles & refilled them and then suddenly send an updated folio? hmmmm. Sad. Given we stay down there often it could have been the start of a great relationship. Your loss Mgr Jose Ortega.
"Friendly and Accommodating Staff"
I stayed here for a cousin's wedding. I arrived late, but the employees at this establishment were sympathetic and adaptive. The breakfast staff was very attentive to my needs. Thanks, Carmel Mission Inn!
