"Great Location and Great staff!"
We stayed here over the Thanksgiving holiday. My son loved the pool and hot tub. All of the staff that we met were really nice and helpful. Service was prompt and came with a smile! Byron the shuttle driver was exceptional and quite timely. We really loved that the shuttle was free to many of the local venues--Sea World, Zoo, Old Town, etc. This was a great plus.
"Disaster Bugs in bed!"
My husband and I flew in from the east coast to attend a holiday party at The Handlery and decided to stay as there website looked nice and they offered a ‘special price’. We added two additional days on to our trip for local visits with family and friends. The hotel was a huge disappointment. First, they neglected to inform us that they were going through extensive renovation. Our building was clearly the last building on their list to be renovated. It was in the farthest corner of their complex and directly next to a building they were working on beginning at 7 AM in the morning. We even saw mattresses being thrown out the windows. Secondly, the room had an odd smell and was very outdated. They charge an outrageous amount of money to use the two bottles of water they left in the room. Additionally, the sheets and towels are poor quality and very thin. I also discovered blood stains on my bedspread. The hairdryer was at least 15 years old. Not all electrical outlets worked in the room. The final straw was the second night we stayed there. Upon awakening, I found bugs in the bed and I was bitten to the point where when I scratched the bite, (not knowing it was a bite), it bled. We were supposed to stay an additional two days, but I was so disgusted that we packed our bags and moved downtown to the Gaslamp District. I refused to pay the bill and after much discussion between low level staffers and the manager on staff, they agreed to waive all fees. It was not easy to get my money refunded, as they were not taking my issues seriously in my opinion. Their first offer was to take off one nights stay and refund the parking, which is $14 per night. I said that was unacceptable. Then they said they had to call management on Monday to which I replied they could call them immediately as this was urgent. Then they tried to say they would get a company in to inspect the room to see if it was bug infested. I said that would be fine, but I wanted to know whom they were calling, what kind of report they were providing and proof that the hotel paid an independent outside company to investigate the situation. I had to ask for all the managers names and took down the names of the people I was dealing with. I felt bad for the staff and reiterated to them that I knew they do not own the hotel and I do not hold them responsible. But I certainly hold the owners and management responsible for putting people in a building which is clearly marked for a renovation. Additionally, the hotel is on the freeway and you can hear the cars passing at all hours. The location is not great either as you must get in your car to go anywhere. Nothing is in walking distance. I dislike writing bad reviews but feel that until The Handlery complete their renovations, people should be very wary of staying there.
"A great Place to stay!"
I travel quite a bit and am pleased to share with you my thoughts regarding my stay at the Handlery Hotel in San Diego. Clean, comfortable, roomy and just overall wonderful rooms. I can't say enough about the staff. From the initial greeting at the registration desk to the restaurant and cocktail lounge everything was absolutely outstanding. The GM is to be commended for running such a fine organization. Tony C. Aguilar, Jr.
We stayed here in November for 6 nights with our 2 children aged 9 & 6. We cannot speak highly enough of all the staff, who went out of their way to help & look after us. Especially the breakfast & Dinner crew, amazing! The food was delicious! We will defintely stay here again! Thank you all for such an enjoyable stay.
"Wonderful Experiance at the Handlery Hotel in San Diego"
We stayed at the Handlery for 5 nights in November 2017, and really enjoyed our stay. The entire staff was most helpful and friendly. The restaurant offered great breakfasts and all the servers were great, including April and Juan. We had cats in the room with us and had plenty of room to move around. The beds were comfortable and very clean. The staff was very helpful and friendly at all times. Great stay all around! M S.
