Over Carlton Hotel

"One night in Frisco"
A very welcoming staff, very helpful and friendly, only there for one night as moving on. The staff were very helpful in telling where we could go and what to do in such a short stay. There with friend there helpfulness for such a short stay made it for us
Based on our stay, I may have to reconsider my decorating style. Really beautiful. It's an old building in a convenient location with helpful staff and the perfect little lounge/restaurant. Our room wasn't huge, but it was tasteful and clean and we fell in love with the colors. No view, but we were fine with that. Kuerig coffee maker, hair dryer and iron in the rooms. Simple but comfortable. Lots to choose from when picking a hotel room, but we'd probably stay here again. The only thing we'd recommend is working out a deal for passes with Live Fit gym down the street.
"Quaint Eclectic Hotel"
Chose this hotel for a 2 night stay having stayed here a couple of years ago Located a little out of the city centre in Lower Nob Hill, but in our opinion that a good thing The hotel staff are always friendly and full of useful tips for visitors Each evening around 5:00 pm there is a complimentary wine reception in the front lobby usually with a local musical providing the entertainment giving guests a chance to meet each other and to chill out before going to dinner The hotel has recently open an on-site restaurant, but as we had already made dinner plans for our 2 night stay did not try it There are two lifts covering all floors and the rooms are large and well equipped with free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee and in-room safe The beds are very comfortable with the décor quirky and interesting A great place for a short stay
"Helpful, friendly staff and lovely rooms"
Trip: Second week of December, weekdays; 5D/4N; six adults. Staff: Front desk people were friendly and helpful from the get-go. We did not encounter any problems checking in even though we were a couple of hours early, although it being a weekday could have been why. After we checked in, they assisted us with directions and helped arrange for a bus tour around the city. Upon checkout, they also set us up with transportation to the airport as we were having trouble getting a cheaper ride. Any staff we encountered (maintenance guys, cleaning ladies, etc.) were all smiles and ready with their greetings. Rooms: We booked three rooms, which were luckily right next to each other. Because we made the reservation through a third party, we were under the impression that only two adults were allowed per room. The rooms we got had two queen beds each and could have fit four people. The beds were very comfortable. The bathrooms had modern fixtures and were quite clean. The shampoo/conditioner and soap were already in dispensers (No freebies to take home, guys!). Basic amenities were provided in the room - coffee machine, safe, towels, etc; roomy closet, several hangers provided, and plenty of drawers. No bottled water, though. A pitcher was provided, and there's a water dispenser on the floor above ours (not sure where others are located). Only con I found was the doors are loud. You definitely know when someone comes out of/into the rooms nearby. General sounds from the hallway carry - knocking, normal conversations. Also, we could hear noise from outside. We were on the 8th floor, and traffic and shouts from outside could still be heard. It's just a bit unnerving when you're trying to sleep and there are people yelling in the streets and ambulances and fire trucks pass by. This took one star off of this review. Maybe management could improve the soundproofing. Miscellaneous: The hotel offers free wine for guests at 5:30 every night while local musicians serenade the guests. My brothers and husband took advantage of this every chance they got (haha!). It's a good time to mingle with the other guests and hear local talent. Location: Union Square and Chinatown are walking distance from the hotel. Union Sq is about 10 blocks away, and Chinatown, a bit farther, but you can definitely walk to these locations. I would advise it anyhow, so you can better see and enjoy the city. The staff will offer directions/maps, so no need to worry. They will also point out the seedy parts to avoid. No hotel parking, but again, you can walk to places, and there's always Uber/Lyft (even locals recommend them). Overall, we were happy with our stay at Hotel Carlton, well worth the price, although discounts would be more than welcome :)
"*The* place to stay in downtown SF"
I almost didn't book this because of all of the fretting on-line about safety in this neighbourhood. Don't listen to that. There is a masjid about a block away - you can see its patrons milling around on Friday and Saturday nights after the evening service when the weather is good (and if this is why you were concerned for your safety, on-line reviewers, then shame on you). So, not a whole lot of liquor shops nearby, which in part explains the relative dearth of vagrants in the immediate vicinity of this hotel. There is, furthermore, a Yemeni restaurant across the street from the hotel, which I strongly recommend visiting - awesome flatbreads and hummus. The hotel itself feels nothing like Yemen on the inside, however, as there is funky dance music blaring in the lobby every evening (can't hear it in your room - I was just above the lobby, too), often with a live DJ, and the decor features an abundance of Buddha heads and African wicker baskets. My room was more tastefully appointed, and immaculately clean. My only complaint was that my closet, while impressively large and furnished with a small safe, had a very strong and unpleasant smell to it, a bit like mothballs. I asked the cleaning staff to do something about it, and for the rest of the week, it smelled of mothballs and that stuff that hotels try to mask the odour of cigarettes with. Didn't work on mothballs. Anyway, hang your clothes in the washroom and stay here. This is one of those rare examples of an old but well-refurbished hotel that preserves the charm that only old hotels seem to have now. I will definitely book here on my next trip to downtown SF. The free wifi worked great, too, by the way.
