"Looks fancy but does not really deliver"
Stayed there a week for a corporate event. While the hotel looks nice from the outside, it struggles to deliver on expectations. The rating of 2 reflects the value / cost ratio. There are several issues which a traveler should be aware of - Gasoline smell. If you like the smell of gasoline in the morning, this is a good place. Somehow, depending on the time and where the wind is blowing, you can smell gas, in the room and outside. There are oil rigs along the coast which may explain it. I lived once close to a refinery and this is the same effect. - Service. I was asked if I wanted a journal. Never saw one during the stay (not a big deal). What is more annoying is to have staff come in to service the room while the privacy sign is on the door, trying to tidy my stuff and losing small items in the process (and removing the privacy sign). - Noise. I requested a quiet room. I ended up next to the machinery room which went on every 15 mins (with staff leaving the machinery room door open despite me closing it often). After complaining, I was supposed to receive an update from the manager about a room change but never heard back. - Privacy. The 1st floor rooms have direct access to the grounds. Windows and doors face directly paths with foot traffic. In other words, 1st floor rooms are like fishbowls. You end up closing the shades and curtains all the time, which defeats the purpose of being in a nice resort. I am sure there are better rooms available. Some staff members were helpful, the lobby looks nice, meeting rooms are ok and restaurants are fine. But if you are looking for a high end resort experience for vacation, I would pass. There are better places (e.g. Pelican Hill).
"an ideal destination for R&R"
The Bacara sets the bar high. The location is gorgeous and we awoke each morning to the sounds of the ocean waves. The service is exceptional - friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The rooms are elegant and well-appointed with Fresh brand bath products for the shower. It's family-friendly, so if you want to sit poolside in peace, there is an adult-only pool next to the spa where you can retreat to a chaise lounge to read your book. They have Peerless coffee in the restaurants and pods in the rooms. If you like strong coffee, you're going to have a very happy morning. I'm trying to figure out how to replicate the iced espresso smoothie from the Bistro restaurant, which was my favorite start to the morning. It's a great destination for a special event or event a weekend getaway.
Don't know where to begin praising this property. i guess check-in with Ashley's delightful personality will do for a start. Michael W. went out of his way assisting us & assigning 2 wonderful rooms for my husband and I and our kids in honor of my husband's monumental Birthday celebration. Our partial ocean view rooms could not have been more beautiful or comfortable. Thank you Michael!!! The manicured, landscaped grounds along with the buildings' architecture completes the beauty. The staff at the pools, restaurants, front desk and in all departments make certain you are treated with the best possible service. Everyone is so attentive. The property is over 70 acres so the resort furnishes carts for transportation. All cart drivers were informative and so cordial. Two stand out for us - a Stephen & a Joey. I had read some negative comments re: the rocky beach and the tar. We must have lucked out with little tar. Please do not miss the beach because of these comments. It is a rocky beach with compacted sand which is great for walks which we did early every morning, either walking over the rocks a short distance or walking the path to the beach. It reminded me of some of the east coast beaches - very picturesque and romantic. We actually spent some time on the beach in the hotel's chairs watching our granddaughters kayak and ride the boogie boards. One comment for management...we are aware that the hotel guests do not seem to utilize the beach as much as the lovely pools but The Beach House is forgotten in the equation. You should employ the same type of help as the rest of the resort by providing a trained beach boy or two to hand out chairs, towels and more than one flimsy, cheap, dime store umbrella that kept falling over. The hotel name should be proudly displayed on all items. And for goodness sake, when the main person needs to step away do not leave someone in charge who speaks no English. We found the food in all the restaurants excellent, just portions that were too large for us. The coffee at breakfast was so, so strong every morning. The only snafu in the 4 days was a couple dents in the passenger side of our car. The Security Manager, Huber, addressed the problem in a most professional manner. He notified us of the dents and he then made certain we were well taken care of. He also helped us when we discovered we had left a travel garment bag full of clothes in our room after we checked out. We gave him our FedEx number and requested the package be sent to our home. Arrangements did not go as smoothly as possible but we did finally receive our package a day later than we had scheduled. I can honestly say "Help, where is our package?" did not overshadow the most enjoyable 4 days at this gorgeous, 5 star property we had the pleasure of experiencing!
"Nice resort near Santa Barbara"
The slick and efficient greeting by the valets and front desk staff was excellent. We were then whisked off to our suites in a golf buggy with a glass of champagne. So far so good! The rooms were really lovely, the open bathrooms were a novelty (shutters can be pulled together for privacy!). Nice to sit on our small terrace and look out at the sea and people down at the pools. We are a family of 6 so were split across two rooms. We discovered we could quickly dash between each room from our terraces which saved us going 'the long way round'!. We dined at the bistro on our first evening. A total of 4 waitresses came over and introduced themselves and said they'd be looking after us, which was a little bizarre! Then we sat and waited about 15 minutes for someone to come back and take our drinks order! It felt as if they had a lot of new staff, half-trained, struggling to speak English. It slowed the service down, especially in the Bistro. We can speak Spanish and started chatted to the waiter at the pool bar who said he was there for 3 months work experience. I wonder if this is the case for a lot of the staff? The manager saw us waiting and apologised and a waitress was speedily dispatched! Food was ok, expensive but California seemed expensive in general. The pool area is lovely and no lack of sun beds or towels. Attentive pool staff. The floor and sun beds are very dirty though. The floor around the pool really needs to be jet washed. The beach is narrow, rocky and covered in tar. The tar is then brought back to the hotel and I think that's what leads to areas being dirty. Overall, we liked Bacara and it is a beautiful resort, but if you've stayed in a 5 star in somewhere like Dubai, it's not quite at that level (although it's good enough for Michael Jordan who was staying there when we were there!!)
"Good resort! Eat somewhere else!"
We spent 3 nights at this resort earlier this summer. The hotel itself is very nice, the location beautiful, although its a beach resort that you can't use the beach!!! They have black tar oozing out of the sand. Its so bad that they have special wipes in every room so you can remove the tar from your feet. The rooms are specious, clean and well equipped. No complaints there. But the food in their restaurant (the one they serve breakfast in) is atrocious. Everything taste the same, which is to say flavorless!! The service is also very spotty, haphazard at best if you are lucky to get some.
