Woke up this morning and the resort does not have any water. Cannot shower, flush toilet. Brushing teeth with bottled water. Our Board meeting should be very aromatic. Five star resort to no stars. Looking for alternative accommodations.
"4 star resort with 1 star service"
We arrived to celebrate my friends 43 bday. It's my second time at this resort since my husband works with a local winery, but it's my first time actually relaxing at the resort. When we arrived the staff went above and beyond to make my friend feel special on her 43rd. They delivered cake, wished her happy birthday and even offered champagne at dinner. Sadly that's where the good stuff ended. Our first room had a problem with the shower and it smelled so badly of sulfur when you ran it that one of us opted not to shower. They offered to move our room. After a long day of travel this wasn't ideal but I prefer that to no showers. We asked for a quiet room or near roads or cars. The first room they suggested was directly behind the parking lot, and the one we moved to was facing the road. Not a very relaxing wake up. Next morning we found bugs in the bathtub. I had a small accident hiking in the morning so I asked for a bag of ice. It was never delivered. The pool service is in need of major help. The spa pool has no attendant so you are on your own to lay your towels, get a drink offered etc. The main pool is even worse. A lovely couple offered us their chairs facing the ocean. We waited and waited and waited for someone to clear their towels and old food. We asked many times and finally on the third try a server picked their stuff up so we could sit down. A 20 minute process. It took us to go to the at to get food service . The server was very sweet but the food came with no serverware and that was another 15 minutes of food siting out before someone brought us some. Another three times asking to get a bill. I could go on but you get the point. The hotel is quaint but be ready to serve yourself! When you are on vacation you want to be taken care of a bit .. relax, not chase for service. This just doesn't fit the bill
"Very comfortable, oceanfront resort"
I stayed here for 3 nights on a business trip with some industry colleagues. The facility is very nice, clean, and well-appointed with pools, ping pong, and spa. I also really enjoyed the walking path along the beach and looping back around to the hotel - very California and nice for a quick walk. The resort carried several parties over the weekend which added to the vibe, otherwise it is quite quiet during the days, for better or worse. I found the room to be sizable, newly renovated, well-furnished, and the bed comfortable. Wifi was excellent throughout the property. For my group rate, the price seemed about right. There are some places to eat on site, and I had several good but pricey meals at the Bistro. I preferred the casual outdoor atmosphere at Bistro to Angel Oak which is more expensive and fancier. I would stay here again, and I look forward to it. Next time I plan to bring my family. Look forward to finding out more about what's available for pre-teen children to do on property.
"Quick business trip."
I was there for a quick business trip. Given the opportunity and correct pricing I would definitely go back as the hotel itself feels luxurious and is stunning to look at. The resort has a nice, clean layout that feels village like and semi private. Pool areas are wide open and clear, however the beach is gross compared to what I like. The beach is extremely buggy, tar and difficult to walk on because of the rocks. I am a big natural light person and the room I was assigned was built into the hill, which in theory is cool but depressing and icky. The only natural light that comes in is from the main doors and to have the light means you have to allow people walking up and down the hills and full view into you and whatever you are doing. I am sure the other rooms are stunning just the luck of the draw I guess. I was shocked at the amount of dogs onsite. The big restaurant, sorry I cannot remember the name, was slightly disappointing. Again, the location was great, but the service and food was average at best. I had much better meals in down with my colleagues and was actually grateful to be able to eat off the property.
"Service falls short "
The facility is beautiful and well maintained, but the service culture at Bacara doesn't live up to the rest of the property. Exhibit A: At midnight, my toddler woke up with a 104 degree fever. Next stop: emergency room. We called the front desk to ask for a golf cart to pick us up (the property is spread out) and for the valet to bring our car around. We told the front desk we were going to the emergency room. 10 minutes later, no golf cart. So we started walking towards the main lobby building ourselves, carrying a crying feverish toddler. A golf-cart-driving employee met us halfway and apologized for being late. We got into his cart and asked what the holdup had been. He explained that the reason for the delay was that valet team was unfamiliar with our Tesla Model S. At a 5-star resort. In California. Anyway, when I asked what a delay with our car has to do with a delay bringing a golf cart to our room, he had no answer. Just then, the golf cart's battery died, and we walked the rest of the way to the main building. When we arrived in front of the building, our car was parked there, but no valet employee was in sight. Locating the employee who had my key was another exercise. So what should have been a 5 minute exercise to get out of the hotel and over to the ER took 20 instead. We had a couple of other disappointing service experiences in the restaurant, but nothing noteworthy. This was. I don't think I have ever encountered such incompetence at any hotel, much less one charging $600/night. At checkout, I mentioned what had happened to the service manager on duty. He "empathized with me" and was "going to follow up with the appropriate team." Not good enough. Nobody asked how my son was doing either. Next time I'll stay at a hotel where the staff can execute on simple tasks in an emergency, and maybe show a little bit of compassion too.
