"It doesn't get any better...mostly."
I'm a pretty picky traveler and have spent many years in the hotel industry. Let's talk about all of the amazing things at Tanque Verde first. The atmosphere is one for relaxing, reconnecting with loved ones (or yourself) and full of ways to get some good exercise, without feeling like you're exercising:) Our family participated in horseback riding lessons and trails, fishing, hiking, evening cookout, hiking. The expansive ranch is perfect for connecting with nature and really take time to disconnect from our electronics for a while. Speaking of electronics, when we entered our suite, my 11 year old freaked out because there was no TV. Even my husband was upset by that one! But, the way the activities are structured, we didn't miss it one bit and found that we connected together as a family much easier without that distraction. The suites were beautifully rustic with quality linens and it was a perfect set up for a family with a second bed in the living room area off the patio. There were buffet options at breakfast and lunches/dinners. They were well done with quality food and many choices. NO one went away hungry...even our picky 11 year old! The staff was friendly enough...but the communication between departments is severely lacking. That is the only non-A+ thing I have to say. As an example, we arrived late on a Friday and inquired to the Front Desk prior to our arrival if we needed reservations in the dining room. He said that because we had the "package" that it wouldn't matter and we didn't need to bother. So, after we arrived late (and very hungry) we threw our bags in the room and walked to the dining room. In the dining room, we were greeted promptly. And then the hostess asked: "Do you have a reservation this evening?" Of course we told her "no" and that the front desk advised us it wasn't necessary. Well, she stated she wasn't sure why they would say that and proceeded to tell us that we needed to "wait" in the front area of the restaurant and someone would get to us as quickly as they could...so nearly 20 minutes passed (the restaurant was only half full at this point, with lots of open tables) and then she came and got us. Odd right? The other thing that I'd recommend for this hotel is an interactive map of the resort on their WiFi. The WiFi was a great feature. But, that paper map was not detailed enough for us to even figure out (without lots of effort) where the activities and other areas are. We found ourselves walking back to the front office to confirm which direction we needed to walk in order to find the pond, etc. As nothing is easily marked on property. There you have it! Even with the lack of communication, I still rated this stay a 5 because the natural beauty of the ranch and the quality of the food/amenities was excellent.
How can I describe a very special place. we have been coming to the ranch for overy 40 years. The food is fabulous, the accomodations great, horseback riding is magic surrounded with the cactus. It is great for families, couples or everyone.
"Hit and miss"
We visited the ranch for a family vacation earlier this month. With 6 of us - 2 kids and 4 adults, the large adjoining rooms made for a comfortable stay. The boys, ages 9 and 11, enjoyed the kids activities as well as hanging out at the pool, mountain biking and going for nature hikes. The ranch is close enough to Tucson, that renting a car and visiting places like the Pima Air Museum and the Arizona Desert Museum are easy outings. The staff that picked us up at the airport were gracious and shared their knowledge of the area. The staff handling riding, biking, hiking, nature walks, etc. were all pleasant and helpful. Now the reason behind the low rating. The hotel and restaurant staff were clearly an unhappy bunch. I suspect that department is understaffed. We were at the ranch for 9 days. We had to ask multiple times for clean water glasses and coffee cups in our room. Most staff in the saloon and dining room must be part time as there were very few folks we saw more than once or twice during our stay. Then, the evening there was a banquet, the staffing was so sparse it took 45 minutes to get drinks before dinner and 1 1/4 hours to get dinner. The excuse for poor service was that one server failed to show up for work that evening. We also had to keep the phone in the room unplugged as we could not get the 0430 wake up calls to stop. It does not take many miscues when you are paying first class prices to leave you disappointed with the experience.
"Great Family Trip"
Our family had a great trip, Tanque Verde Ranch has lots to offer everyone in the family. The kids club for my 7 and 10 year old girls was a huge hit and my wife and I were able to join on the morning breakfast ride. Besides horseback riding, enjoyed mountain bike ride and 3 hour hike, both great workouts.
"A must for all city slickers"
My wife and I had not been horse riding before and were a bit nervous of this adventure, there was no need, the staff were very professional and helpful. We had a lesson on how to ride a horse, then a walk through rough terrain in the desert, as an all inclusive package we could have been out all day. The highlight for us was the early morning ride for about an hour to a chuck house up in the hills, serving breakfast then back to base. There was an evening barbecue where we had a chance to meet others. Our only slight problem was the evening in their Dog house bar where a local “Tom†was giving us songs poems and stories, this was disrupted by others coming in a playing pool with no respect to the performer, it would help if no other activities were allowed! Still We would recommend this to everyone, food was good, staff great and accommation excellent.
