"Lovely location and facilities"
My daughter and I went to Tanque Verde Ranch the week after the Christmas holidays to have some special time together. We are both riders, and we wanted the experience of riding in the desert, and the pictures for this resort looked lovely. The resort is very much as the pictures portray. The grounds are well-maintained, and the accommodations are spacious with views of the surrounding mountains and valley. We were initially placed in a room in the Roadrunner Ridge area, but we moved to the Rincon Vista area because the rooms in the Roadrunner Ridge area don't have bathtubs, and we wanted to be able to soak in a tub after riding during the day. The new room was lovely--high ceilings, fireplace, jacuzzi-type tub, and refrigerator, with a beautiful view of the Rincon Mountains from our porch. The food was also very good. Not too gourmet, but also not too "kid"-oriented. There were many selections to choose from at both lunch and dinner, and we really enjoyed the meals a lot. There was always a salad bar and buffet available for lunch and dinner in addition to menu items, and breakfast always had many choices on a buffet, with the option to order specific items as well. The Nature Center is a real bonus to the resort. It is staffed by naturalists who have a wealth of knowledge and are passionate about the natural surroundings of the area. We learned so much from both Marsha and Rick, and were very appreciative of their passion and depth. Very nice! We spent most of our time riding, and didn't go to the spa or use the pools (it was a bit chilly while we were there). Riding program--needs some work. There weren't enough wranglers for the number of horses and guests. When we arrived, the place was really busy, but by the end of our time there, it wasn't very full--and the wranglers were still stretched. Some of the walk rides had up to 16 people in them with one wrangler. We had a lope ride with 12 people on it, which just is too many people on that kind of ride for just one wrangler to properly supervise and keep an eye on everyone. This is the first ranch we've attended where guests are not assigned a horse based upon their ability; we had a different horse for each ride every day. I got so frustrated by the third day that I told one of the older wranglers that I was going to stop riding. Fortunately, that wrangler found a good horse for me to ride that day, and I was able to request the same horse for another ride. My daughter was just as frustrated as me in this regard. During the busy times, the riding program has an "assembly line" feel to it. The ranch is very big, and there are a lot of horses, so if you go there for riding, you need to be aware of this in advance. In order to have "smaller" rides, we paid for a private ride with a wrangler and we did two sunset rides, which were an additional charge. Doing this added a great deal more expense to our bill. One other point I will mention is that it rained (hard) for a couple days before we arrived at the ranch. As a result, the corral area was very muddy and the horses were coated in mud. I understand you can't groom 150+ horses, but the horses were still filthy after almost a week, when the corral area had mostly dried up. As a result, our clothes, boots, and outerwear also became filthy. This may seem like a small detail, but it made me wonder about the care and attention the horses receive in this environment. The horses all seemed to be good in their weight, and their feet were all well maintained, so the essentials were obviously covered. During the time we were in Tuscon, we visited two other ranches, and we noticed that their horses had been cleaned up after a couple of days. The riding on the trails was lovely-- the saguaro cacti are impressive and the landscape was, at times, just breathtaking. We did the half day mountain adventure ride, which was a highlight of our time at the ranch. I think the bottom line is that Tanque Verde is a lovely place with many great amenities. However, if your main reason for going is to ride, you may want to consider alternatives.
"A little bit of heaven..."
Our family (ages 18-88) spent a week at the Tanque Verde just after Christmas what a joy! The riders among us raved about the lope rides, one who started out as a non-rider felt the lessons moved her to a level that allowed her to enjoy the more adventurous trails. The nature program was a treat for those of us who prefer to travel on our own two feet. There are several different naturalists, each with different points of view and information. Rick in particular was a great storyteller, not only providing information about the desert and the ranch, but about local history. His presentation is terrific, he could be on stage! The staff in general is incredible! The dining staff went out of their way to make life better, and we certainly kept them running. There was always a smile to greet us! They went out of their way to try to satisfy special requests...at the lunch barbecue the cooks patiently put my hotdog back n the grill (I like it very well done) and similarly made sure that my steak was cooked just the way I like it! The food in general is good, the fresh salad tastes as though it was picked the same day...awesome! Breakfast bacon can be had delightfully crisp! Don't miss the pancakes, especially those cooked up at the homestead after a hike or ride. The rooms are large with fabulous views. I was too tired after a full day to make a fire, but loved sitting in the large comfy chair in the Kate afternoon reading or just looking out at the mountain. Tanque Verde borders Saguaro National Park. As a hiker it was a great place to spend a couple of hours, good trails for a walk or run. Let's not forget the biking (my son loves it) or the tennis! (I swear, next year I'm playing tennis). We had nine folks under 30, they were busy with pickleball, basketball and swimming when not riding! Great place for the whole family! We will be back!
"Best Dude ranch ever!"
Great view, service, food. Met really cool and interesting people. Staff was so helpful especially to city slickers like myself. I will definitely go back. It is a fantastic place for families, business, girls weekend and even solo. Even off season there was plenty to do if the weather didn't cooperate. I love this place.
"Beautiful Location and Friendly Wranglers Make this Ranch Amazing!"
This was our 2nd visit to Tanque Verde. We spent a week there over the Christmas holidays (with my 3 teenage girls, my parents, my sister and her daughter). The rooms are only ok, but you hardly spend any time indoors, so who cares? The food is EXCELLENT and plentiful (both super healthy and not healthy choices, so good for all tastes!). The staff is friendly and efficient. The grounds are clean and picturesque. The ranch was very crowded (xmas week!) and that caused some bottle-necking when going on rides. They should have made guests ride in smaller groups, especially for lessons and lope checks. But other than that (and one overly bossy wrangler), this place is amazing. We also hiked and mountain-biked -- beautiful area! Great family destination -- kids used the pool, did yoga, snuck apples to the horses! I can't wait to go again!
