"Nice Lodge - Close to Yosemite"
We stayed here two nights in February 2018. Overall, we had a great experience. Check in was a bit slow but we arrived at a busy time (right after sunset). Our room was ready and warm - important since it was below 30ºF in Yosemite Valley. The room was very spacious and clean and the beds were very comfortable. The gas fireplace added more heat and a nice ambiance and the shower lots of hot water. We used the kitchenette to cook breakfast and the large fridge froze our blue ice. The best thing about the room was the veranda overlooking the Merced River. Even in February it was possible to bask in the sun in the afternoon. The place is only a 15 minute drive from Yosemite Valley and is quite a bit less expensive than the accommodations in the Valley, plus it is on the lowest elevation highway into the park so it's the last to close due to snow - which is rare. We will definitely stay here next trip.
"A great room with a View"
This lodge is steps outside (okay a few miles) of Yosemite National Park. You can't get closer without being in the park. We had a great room with a spectualar view of the Merced River. We opened the sliding glass door to hear the rushing river flow right outside the door. It is a huge complex of multiple buildings. But the room and bathroom were a great size and well outfitted. I would encourage you to bring snacks and food - because there is a workable kitchen with stove, and fridge. The restaurants are not great and usually a long wait. The town of El Portal is very small with a general store but little else. If you are looking for location, great view and nice room - this place checks all those boxes.
"Great location but plan ahead!"
The lodge itself is pretty nice. It’s right up against the river and has private views from your room. Only a few miles from the park, you can save a little money by staying outside of the park. The room had a fully stocked kitchenette which was a nice surprise. There was a microwave and a stovetop along with serving dishes and pots and pans. The downside: the WiFi is not included and is quite pricey. If you have Verizon it’s not to big of a deal in the park but other carriers don’t work that well. We have Verizon and didn’t have any service at the hotel. The restaurant was extremely overpriced and the quality was pretty disappointing. I highly recommend bringing food with you and cooking in your room or eating lunch and dinner in the park.
"Don’t waste your money"
This hotel is dreadful. Our room was filthy—fingerprints all over the sliding glass doors to our balcony, and the carpet was old and musty. As were the linens, sheets, and pillows. We just returned, so our visit was in February—there is no heater in the bathroom and we had no hot water. The wall-mounted hair dryer was broken and lying n the counter. The “fireplace†—which was one of the reasons we rented this place—is a fake electric one attached to the wall. We were misled into renting this place because we thought it was run by the Park Service, a misconception caused by the fact that you must rent it off the Yosemite website. However, it is NOT part of the National Park—there are only 2 lodges that are, and they are both wonderful. The Majestic (formerly the Ah-Wah-Nee) is quite pricey, but the other one, the Yosemite Valley Lodge, was priced more than half of the Valley View, which was a total waste of money. The nastiest hotel I have ever stayed in.
We stayed here for 2 nights and it's proximity to the park is great. The receptionist suggested we pay an extra $30 per night for a river view - we were so delighted that we did. The bedroom is fine; the bath/shower was a little high if one has mobility issues. There was a cooker, microwave and fridge, there is a shop on site if you want to cater for yourself. We dined in the adjacent restaurant both nights and the food was fine and the service excellent: we also had breakfast there one morning. We were delighted with the pool and spa after hiking. Recommended as a budget hotel for touring the valley.
