Over Zion Lodge

Our favorite

"Big Disappointment"

Room was a glorified Quality Inn but at a Hyatt price. Free Wifi is like a time warp back to 1998 dial up, do not count on it as the lodge would lead you to believe. I actually got better service from cellular which was spotty at best. Parking permit we thought was a selling point, but staff didn't properly prepare us for the fact that it was essentially meaningless for our stay since the park opened up to all vehicles the same day we checked in. Bummer, nature that looked like an interstate. Furthermore their café closed for the season. Again, no warning until we showed up. Staff wasn't pleasant, my wife used the word condescending. Guess that's the attitude you get when you have a monopoly. TV wasn't in HD with only basic channels. If we had wifi it wouldn't have mattered... nothing like relaxing to the weather channel after a long day of hiking. Shower had zero pressure and the head was made for someone under 6 feet tall. Tired sore muscles, I guess just stay sore. Queen beds were more doubles than queens...so my wife and I got our own beds. Construction with no apology or discount. Springdale has much better access to after hiking activity, with nearly the same access to trails, same great star gazing and backdrop and more overall value. What a shame...this should easily be the best place to be!

"Magnificient setting"

two nights at the lodge in Zion Park, humbling experience in the canyon. Great star gazing. Wonderful accommodations with balcony with great views. Visited nightly by Mule deer. If you can get into the lodge, or cabins, do so

"Great access to trails and the best location in Zion"

Location was excellent and the views from our room and the main lodge were amazing. There were deer on the lawn every morning and evening. We hiked The Narrows the first day and Angel's Landing the second day and while both were rated strenuous we had enough energy to do shorter hikes near the lodge in the afternoons. It was so convenient to come back to the room, rest, shower and then head out for another hike or to dinner. Added bonus was the ability to drive into the park. Staff was friendly. Room was basic but clean and comfortable. Food was OK.

"Acceptable accommodations with excellent access to trails"

The accommodations are adequate -- spacious and comfortable, but dirty (as in not cleaned well at all) and not at all soundproof (as in you'll hope you have quiet neighbors who go to bed early). The great thing is that you don't have to worry about getting in and out of the park, because it's all right there at your doorstep. The food in the lodge is overpriced and bland. If you're vegetarian, be prepared to pay extra, and don't even think about having a great salad.

"Awesome "

With our 8 year old we decided against a typical beach vacation and headed west to Utah to explore the beautiful southern Utah national parks. We stayed in Park City which is a vibrant artsy town for a few days and enjoyed going to he socks Store, High West and rode the vertical incline and a host of pretty cool local places. But our eyes were on Zion National Park. We had wanted to balloon over Park City but a bogus claim of "weather" made by the balloon company cancelled the trip. I'm thinking PC Balloons didn't have enough reservations to make it profitable and cancelled. So we headed south through Provo and down to Springdale UT where we had booked a great room at the Desert Pearl (definitely recommend a river suite room). It's a quirky little town but the parking inside the Park is limited so it's much easier to stay here and park on the street and take the free and frequent shuttle busses into Zion. The hotel has a nice outdoor pool and jacuzzi but no restaurant. Also to get essentials (beer and wine) you have to go to a store called Switchback- it's the only place in town. The next day we were staying at a cabin in Zion National Park. In the Summer you can't drive too far into the park unless you're staying at the Lodge. So with reservations at the Lodge we zipped right in. I had booked our cabin just 2 weeks prior to our trip and was surprised to get it. It was not as rustic as I had envisioned and the whole cabin experience was good. The food at the lodge was also good and they have friendly and quick service staffers. We took the shuttle to the narrows- which is a must and hiked up about 2 miles. Be sure to get the special hiking shoes and a walking stick at Zion Outfitters- I thought it was a gimmick until a family from Amsterdam told me in the jacuzzi at the Pearl the day before how absolutely necessary the equipment was- they were right. We took an hour horseback ride at the lodge which was fun. Dusty but fun. Our cowboy was a Mormon from Bryce, his name was Talon. Do the Emerald Pools Hikes, enjoy the stunning scenery and watch out for tarantulas.
