"Absolutely fantastic Honeymoon at the Lux St Gilles!"
Amazing stay for our Honeymoon! First of all, apologies that there has been such a delay in leaving this review. There have been distractions every time we think of writing it! Before anything else, we think it is important to point out that some of the reviews posted here are completely unfair, and probably written by extremely picky people and/or snobs. We have nothing but good things to say about the Lux St Gilles, and the staff. There were unfair reviews about staff not speaking English too; although we are French speakers, staff did realise we were English and a couple of times did speak English to us. Their English was absolutely perfect, no issues at all. Remember – you’re in a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean; not All Inclusive in Tenerife! Allowances do need to be made. All staff were helpful & friendly at all times, including (as has been said before) Patricia the concierge who is very helpful & knowledgeable when it comes to things to see & do on the Island. We came to La Réunion Sept/Oct 2017 for our Honeymoon, as it had so much appeal to us as a couple. The hotel as a whole is amazing, comfortable, well-decorated, clean; we could go on. This goes for the rooms as well (certainly our room anyway). Upon arrival, rooms were not ready straight away. This was to be expected as we did arrive in the morning, and the rooms were not due to be available until 2pm. However, the extremely friendly and helpful staff did their best to get our room ready for us as soon as they possibly could. During this time we were offered complimentary refreshments and the opportunity to have a shower if we so wished. We took this moment to explore the grounds of the hotel, and the amazing picturesque beach & lagoon. Before long, our room was ready for us; way before 2pm! Our room and bed were decorated with fresh petals and a fragrant aroma, then later that day we were brought a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine – a lovely touch for the start of our honeymoon! Later in the trip we were invited to a Cocktail Evening with the Hotel Director, this would appear to be a weekly thing that guests are invited to. A nice touch nonetheless. Whilst we were there, the Director approached us and congratulated us, seemingly aware that we were on our honeymoon. We had not told her, nor anyone else prior to that moment. Again – a lovely, personal touch. She was lovely and spent some time talking to us, as did a couple of other staff members thereafter. Food is great here; we’d recommend trying all the restaurants in the hotel. Sometimes they aren’t all open, but if you’re staying half-board then there are always half-board options in the other restaurants available even if the main buffet restaurant isn’t open. The only thing we would say about the Hotel is that drinks and food can be expensive. But remember this is a 5 star hotel, and it is an overseas department. Generally, things are more expensive on the Island than on the Mainland anyway. So just be prepared to pay a bit more for things overall. However, the service at the hotel is so great (drinks brought to your sunbeds whether on the beach or by the pool) that we didn’t mind paying that bit extra. Also, for the picky ones amongst you; remember that 5 Star is a vast rating at the top of the ‘Star ladder’ for want of a better term. So if you’re expecting the Ritz then you’ll probably be disappointed; but we would agree that this does deserve its 5 Star rating nevertheless (even if it might be at the lower end of the scale for some). For us, it really did tick all the boxes and we’d highly recommend it for anyone wanting to go somewhere slightly different. The Island is beautiful, the weather is great (end of Sept/Beginning Oct it was circa 28 degrees most days), and there is plenty to see and do (helicopter trip is a must!). Dan & Jason
"Beautiful Hotel; Horrible bathroom and Internet; Average Service"
LUX hotel is decorated like a Créole house. Its beautiful, and lovely. It has a beach that is like heaven, and a great - very deep - swimming pool. We stayed in a Deluxe Room. The Hotel is currently a bit shabby and needs maintenance (tiles missing on the pool, paint coming out the ceiling, partially obstructed shower, and the tiniest bathroom I have ever seen in my tourist life for a 5 star, and more). Food in the Hotel is amazing; the Orangine restaurant is delicious. The buffets are great and breakfast is a dream. The croissants, oh God, are the best. The music at dinner time on the Cuisine restaurant is awesome. Service is not so good. You have to scream for a waiter on the beach and on the pool. Many times I phoned reception and no one picks up the phone. To leave on my last day I had to take the bags to the car myself. The TV guide says CNN is channel 9 but in fact there is no english speaking channel, and channel nine is just an obscure french channel. There are a few chinese channels but no english! Location of the Hotel is perfect. Wifi in my room (94) was a nightmare; comes and goes, its not charged but doesnt work at all!
I suppose the first thing to say is that this isn’t a 5* hotel in my humble opinion. We stayed for 3 nights on the half board basis. Room. We had a superior room; it was adequate and no more. Comfortable bed and decent air conditioning but the bathroom was a puzzle and far too cramped. The shower was feeble and there was no plug for the sink (wasting water in a hotel that claimed to champion the environment - they had paper pens but still used plastic drinking straws and plastic on the cotton ear buds) The outside of our block was in urgent need of redecoration with heavily peeling paint. This wasn’t the only sign of shabbiness with water leaking through the roof of the bar. Beach - fine Pool - this was very good Restaurants. There are supposedly 4 restaurants but there’s always at least one closed. For two of the 3 nights we stayed two restaurants were closed for private functions and the only choice was between the main buffet area and the Orangery - a ‘fine dining experience’ with prices to match that we didn’t need in our relatively brief stay. On one night we couldn’t get into the main restaurant as it was full - there’s only a 2 hour serving period between 7.30-9.30 and no booking system in place. We had a bit of an exchange of views with the catering manager and did get to eat but the restaurant was over-full and the food poor. Staff - they mean well but too many of them are inefficient and it didn’t take long to work out that there were management flaws. I’ve commented above on their environmental claims. The other thing to add is something I’m finding increasingly common. They give you the ‘towels in bath’ and ‘put the star on the bed’ options for changing towels and sheets - then go ahead and change them regardless! We had a couple of other niggly episodes while we were there and left disappointed. It could be so much better than this.
"outstanding beach resort with service to match"
My partner and I spent a week at the LUX resort and enjoyed it thoroughly. Good rooms, beautiful facilities (beach, pool, gym, gardens, parking), and many restaurants. Food is excellent, and buffet provides a wide choice to suit the most difficult vegetarians. The service is of a very high standard. Nothing is too much for the dedicated staff. Lux is well positioned on the East of the island (the driest part - i.e. much less rain than St Denis). The 2 heliports (Helilagon and Coral) are about 5 to 10 minutes drive. A helicopter tour of the island is a definite must
We enjoyed staying one week at the Lux* in La Réunion around New Year. We were impressed by the colonial feel of the hotel, and easily felt at home by the welcoming staff. The food is excellent in all three restaurants, especially in the local Créole cuisine seaside restaurant La Plage; the buffet restaurant La Cuisine is serving a wide variety of options aswell. L’Orangine will be appreciated by many guests but we were less compelled to the fine dining options on a hot Summer night on an African island. During the day food is served by the pool and we especially appreciated the excellent coffee from the barrista’s at Café Lux. Special kuddo’s to the experienced hotel staff for hosting excellent New Year’s Eve dinner and dance celebrations; the event was carefully planned and seamlessly led us into the New Year fireworks on the beach. The property is well maintained and spotlessly clean; we also enjoyed the little local surprises we found each day in our room giving us a taste of beautiful Réunion. Wifi is not the strongest point of the hotel; wifi reached the hotel room and the pool but was often very slow...but why bother if you’re on holiday...you might want to enjoy a digital detox whilst staying here :-)! One comment we read below and agree is annoying is regarding the stray cats begging for food from the hotel guests at the buffet restaurant. We also noted groups of birds waiting around the buffet restaurant until no one is around to fly into the buffet and pick from the bread ...that hotel guests will eat later...we abstained from eating any bread after noting this :-) We would recommend staying at Lux* in Réunion, especially for families with kids.
