Saint Gilles les Bains is een dorpje gelegen langs de westkust van La Réunion en is zeker een bezoek waard tijdens uw vakantie La Réunion, het is namelijk de meest populaire badplaats van het hele eiland. Hier kunt u uitstekend surfen bij de surfplekken Boucan Canot en Roches Noires.
I went to Reunion Island last year for work and stayed at Lux Saint Gilles. I had a whole day off to enjoy the hotel. The pool area is nice and spacious. I also enjoyed the huge breakfast that they serve. The rooms are nice and spacious as well. The beach is nice and clean but there is not alot of space to swim. The coral is very close to the beach, I actually cut my foot just 5 meters into the water. The glass bottom canoe and stand up paddle boarding was fun, albeit expensive at 20 Euros for half an house to rent. Will be back soon.
The hotel consists of several buildings so spreading over a large piece of land. The bedrooms are specifically located in separate two-floor villas. That containing the bedroom I was allocated consists of ten bedrooms, five on the ground floor and five on the first floor. They are not sound-proof. Therefore one can hear the noise stemming from the other rooms of the same villa. Thatâ€™s particularly the case as regards doors slams whose occurrence depends upon the kind of people who fall to one as neighbours. Unfortunately, among the ones I had as such there was a lady with her children occupying two different rooms respectively and every time that she went from one room to the other I had to endure the noise caused by the relevant door slam. Such a low level of education and of community spirit seems to be very common among the hotel customers. The room I had was supposed to be a â€œdeluxeâ€ one. Albeit it wasnâ€™t very spacious it had everything necessary as far as comfort is concerned. The bed for instance is very comfortable particularly thanks to its tough mattress, very adequate for people suffering from back problems. The rest of the elements were good as well as those of the bathroom. The hotel facilities are very appropriate. The swimming pool is large and its water is usually clean. In general itâ€™s properly maintained. Though whenever I bathed I went to the beach I could passing by realize how clean the swimming pool is. The three hotel restaurants are also good and the service that one can get there is excellent. I liked particularly the decoration of that called â€œLa Plageâ€ thanks mainly to the lively red colour of the bottles and glasses on white tablecloths. Lâ€™Orangine is also a good restaurant. If there were no music in them everything would be even better. The breakfast is superior. Everything available for that repast is of a high quality, especially the tropical sweet fruits. There are always fruits of that kind: papaya or mango or both and they are very tasty. Unfortunately one has to stomach owful music also at breakfast time thus disturbing the customers who would prefer to hear the birds singing. The staff members are in general very kind and helpful save a fat lady working at the front desk who was very disinterested in welcoming the undersigned and so unenthusiastic. Apart from that, one always gets from them the necessary directions to go around either inside or outside the hotel. In this sense already a short time after my arrival at the hotel a lady working at the concierge desk explained to me very thoroughly and accurately how I could go by bus to St. Gilles and informed me about the restaurants existing in the area. Everything went quite smooth thanks to her explanations. The other concierges are also very diligent and polite. The same applies to the staff working at the front desk with the aforesaid exception. The room maids perform their job adequately though sometimes they are a bit absentminded. One day one of them left a dust cloth on my suitcase and a scourer in the bathroom. I had to call them so that they took those implements away. At least they usually comply with the principle whereby just the towels left on the floor or in the bath tube have to be removed. The gym is very adequate. There is in it all the necessary equipment to get plenty of exercise; particularly the presence of mats deserves to be outlined. This is of course a necessary element which gyms shouldnâ€™t lack to be considered as such. Itâ€™s a walled premises so that mosquitoes donâ€™t come in and bother the people while they try to improve in health through physical exercise. Most of time there is a person engaged by the hotel to ensure that everything is in order and help the customers to the pertinent extent. Wifi does not always works as one should desire. On such occasions however the hotel doesnâ€™t hesitate to let the customers as far as possible use one of their computers at the hotel lobby. Under the hotel beach sea water there are many rocks. Thatâ€™s why itâ€™s advisable to wear special shoes whenever going to swim there, otherwise one runs the risk of hurting his feet. By an large therefore itâ€™s a good hotel; I shouldnâ€™t dare say â€œvery goodâ€ owing to the few flaws pointed out above. At any rate, taking the quality of the other hotels in Reunion Island into consideration, I shouldnâ€™t fail to try to lodge again in it whenever I return to that island.
"LUX ST GILLES IS THE BEST ON THE ISLAND"
I really enjoyed the 2.5 very action packed days I spent at the Lux Hotel St Gilles. It's a good moderate / standard 5* hotel on the west coast on a nice beach. My bedroom was very comfortable with a super patio overlooking the garden and palms and beach. The hotel restaurants were good and I loved the ice cream bar on the beach. The service was good most of the time. in one or two instances slightly slower - but perhaps that's island living pace! The architecture is appealing and all the facilities good. I love the LUX brand in Reunion and on Mauritius in fact. I think Reunion is going to really take of tourism wise and this will make the hotel offer even more services and facilities.
"Excellent staff, nice hotel, but not 5 stars"
The outstanding asset of this hotel is it's staff who were all friendly, helpful, and polite - at reception, the concierges, waiters, gym, cleaners - everybody. The architecture and layout are also good with lots of space in a well laid out area. The food was generally of a high standard especially in Orangine and the buffet in the main restaurant was varied and plentiful. They also make an effort to vary the offerings so that it is not the same night after night. The other asset is the pool which is of a very decent size. On the down side - the dreaded plastic mattress cover which has all but disappeared in the Metropole. The rooms are adequate though nothing special - a superior room at a 3 star Mercure. One hand basin, combined shower and bath, one armchair, one plastic chair. Lots of peeling paint on the outside of the room blocks - some money needs to be spent. A few minor gripes - the sun beds are totally crammed together both on the beach and by the pool. By the pool is more understandable but why on the beach? There appears to be only one umbrella for four beds which means that two couples have to share each one, and there is no flexibility to move them around to get in or out of the sun. The gym is good overall but the exercise mats are dirty and tired. Once again some investment is needed. Finally - the wine. No half bottles and only three wines by the glass - red,white and rose. I was assured in Orangine that this was all that was available though I did see later in the main restaurant that there were two of each on the wine list though maybe they were not available. But if there is only one option why have Syrah ? (Shiraz here as it comes from SA.) Surely a blend would be much more welcome, but if you have to have an unblended wine have a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Pinot Noir or even a Merlot. Overall a nice hotel - but if it didn't claim to be five star a lot of the minor irritations would be easier to overlook.
"Overrated and extremely disappointing stay"
unfortunately our stay was very disappointing from the moment of check in - the staff were very disinterested in welcoming us. just sat us down and left us - then escorted us to our room quite a long way away from reception without one word, until we get to the room and everything is shown to us as though we were youngsters!!!! The beach bar was our saving grace, they told us to quickly make a booking to eat at the beach restaurant that night which was enjoyable. there is also a dress code at all the restaurants of long pants. the pool area was very pleasant, however, the coral beach was quite difficult to navigate down to the lagoon - empty deck chairs etc. close together and reserved with towels as is the pool chairs. Gardens and buildings tired and unkept paint peeling from lots of the outside room walls - as mentioned in a previous review, which I wish we had read this more seriously and then chosen not to stay at this property. some of the comments are so very different from our experience, it is as though we stayed at a completely different hotel ----and we travel extensively. this hotel has a 5 star reception/lobby area only!!! we checked out early. needless to say it was too expensive for what was offered.
