"Perfect service in Paradise"
Stayed in a deluxe room, very quiet, large balcony. Great breakfast. Relaxed atmosphere in the resort. We stayed most of the time at the beach because the wind loweres the temperature. Also great service there.
Had an opportunity to stay for around one month in this amazing hotel. My stay in Lux Saint Gilles made me feel the luxury and living in nature both. The hotel is in a beautiful setting on the shores of the Indian Ocean. The food at the hotel was very good - we ate at all 3 of the restaurants, over the weekend enjoyed to eat at the bar..was just awesome. Well-presented and varied menu, ad the staff were extremely helpful, polite and friendly. The sandy beach, the nice preserved garden and the whole ambience of the hotel helps to feel relaxed and pampered. The large and comfortable rooms, the quality of the bed worth all the money I have payed for.The ocean view made it spectacular. The staff are really friendly irrespective of the language barrier. Beautiful swimming pool and access to a wonderful beach. There are activities during the day for every age group for those who like to be busy. It really is an enjoyable, beautiful hotel.
Firstly, to be crystal clear - this hotel is not 5*, especially when compared to other LUX resorts. We stayed here 4 nights and were very underwhelmed by the experience. When we arrived we were delighted to be upgraded to a better room and had some nice touches in our room to recognise our honeymoon - great start. Unfortunately it didn't take long to go downhill. After over 24 hours of travelling, we were both knackered and went to bed early... which was lucky because at 5am the smoke detector in our room suddenly went off, waking both us an everyone else in our block up. No one came to the room (good job there wasn't actually a fire!) and so we went to reception. 10 minutes later someone arrived to find the fault and asked if we had been smoking to set it off! It did get fixed but put a real dampener on the rest of the day. The room itself was lovely although the shower was pretty weak and we did have a slight issue with ants most of the days. The cleaning service was great and we enjoyed the hammock that our upgraded room had. The buffet food was fine although not spectacular. As part of our package, we had a meal at L'orangine one night and it was truly incredible. The food was delicious and service fantastic. The biggest problem that this resort has is the level of service it offers. Specifically, because we don't speak French we really struggled to communicate with a number of staff and actually felt guilty for this with a small number who actually resented the fact they had to use their pigeon English to deal with us. To emphasise this point, one day we woke up late and missed breakfast so at 12pm wanted to order lunch to the room. Reception put me through to the Kitchen where I spoke to 4 different people (none of whom had remotely an adequate level of English) and after about 8 minutes of frustration, I gave up. To their credit, I wrote this in feedback to St Gilles and they acknowledged this poor service and said they were addressing it. Unfortunately it wasn't the only instance where being only English speaking was an issue. The lady at the bar (forget her name) and Patricia were exceptions to this and were really helpful during our stay. We also felt like we were not properly informed of what was going on throughout the hotel in terms of activities and again, felt like this wouldn't have been such an issue if we could have spoken French. We understand that this is a French territory however we didn't think it was satisfactory that at a 5* hotel the levels of English were so poor. St Gilles claim that 75% of their staff speak English however this was definitely not our experience and I suspect only a fraction of those staff are actually fluent. Overall, the resort is good for a retreat with nice facilities but it is not a 5* experience and the service has significant room for improvement. They could really learn a thing or two from their Mauritian resorts where exemplary service is provided. If we return to Reunion, we would give it another chance in the hope that the service would have improved.
"So great !!"
Very nice hotel, located in a tropical paradise, just before the lagoon!! The rooms are clean but so small for a hotel of this category. The food is quite good, but the staff doesn't speak English! (Restaurant the Cuisine) Thanks to Enzo who understood that I was allergic to gluten and immediately brought me gluten-free bread. The proposed excursions are expensive but worth it !! Thanks to the whole team !!
"Very enjoyable stay"
Stayed here along with another couple. There is no mistaking you are on a French department. The hotel is french colonial in style with an airy reception area, and the staff dressed in blue and red saris created a pleasant, relaxed ambiance on arrival. We were in adjacent rooms on the first floor of a block of wooden chalets, looking out toward the tennis courts. Rooms were nicely decorated and reasonably spacious. Bathroom small, but on the plus side, a separate toilet. Overall though they were all in need of a little TLC particularly as this is a 5* rated hotel. Staff were friendly enough. The buffet food was extremely good. Only criticism being our red wine tended to be served ice cold. The Piage was closed during our stay due to strong winds caused by an anti-cyclone off the coast of the island, so we ate twice in The Orangine. Friendly, efficient and informative staff with a limited but well thought out menu. Lovely atmosphere and the food was superb. Beach was pleasant to walk along. There's a small mall within a 10 minute walk from the hotel with a bakery/cafe, sports shop, a few boutique and gift shops, supermarket etc. We didnt use the pool or spa at the Lux as we spent 2 full days out and about on White Sands organised trips. Reunion is a wonderfully diverse mix of weather, landscape and geography. So glad we decided to visit before our onward trip to Mauritius.
