"5 stars is an understatement"

   20-02-2017
We have a time share with Anantara Resorts and the Royal Livingstone is part of that network. How lucky we were in landing here. This hotel exceeds high expectations in every area. The hotel manager, who is highly regarded by his staff runs a wonderfully staffed Hotel. Frankly thats what makes this Hotel a dont miss. Rooms are impeccable and serviced with tremendous care. The food, whether in the resturant or lounge is delicious and hard to comprehend its quality in such a remote location. Kudos to the Chef. The grounds are immaculate. The sunset deck is spectacular every night. The closeness of Zebras, giraffes and monkeys were surreal at first but after some days it was as common as seeing dogs, cats and sqirrels in NY. Loved our 2 week stay here and hope to come back VERY soon. Everyone of the staff is to be credited for the 5 stars and a wonderful Hotel manager at the helm. A true model for all hotels on how they should be run and managed. Thank you ROYAL LIVINGSTONE for making our vacation extrodinary.!!!

"American style hotel a short distance above Victoria Falls"

   17-02-2017
We went here to have a drink and a dessert on the veranda overlooking the Zambezi River. It is a very serene setting occasionally interrupted by the arrival and departure of small watercraft taking guests for a ride over closer to Victoria Falls. A small price to pay for the experience.

"Exceptional Service"

   17-02-2017
Where to begin? The Royal Livingstone Victoria Falls Zambia Hotel by Anantara has some of the highest service standards we have experienced in a long time. Made the reservation online with the hotel, and later cancelled and re-reserved on a discounted rate. Had an issue with being charged upfront, but was all sorted out by the hotel. Hotel does not offer airport transfers, but outsource them to Bushtracks Africa, who took around a week to confirm. Would have been good to be able to get the hotel to book, and charge to the room. However we had a water taxi transfer. You get driven from the airport to the water taxi jetty and then a 15-minute transfer by Safari Boat to the Royal Jetty at the Hotel. Cannot recommend this enough to anyone. It's the best way to arrive to the hotel. Check in was done in the lounge, which is an awe-inspiring room in itself. Cold towels, hand massage and iced tea made such a welcoming experience. Our luggage had been sent by road from the airport, and we were taken in a golf cart to our room. We had booked a corner room (difference from a standard room was that it had a netted verandah with a ceiling fan). Would recommend this room type, as you can sit outside without being bothered by insects (no insects really when we were there). Room is adequate size with a bathroom (separate shower and bathtub, and single vanity - the shower head sprayed everywhere). Molton Brown toiletries were welcomed. King size bed with exceptional linen and duvets. Loads of fluffy towels and bathrobes (would also be replaced at turn down service). Mini bar (and you could order anything from room service). Best of all was ice-cold air conditioning that would not go off if you left the room. This meant after a day of activities you could come back to such a welcoming cool room. Restaurants – You can dine either at the Royal Livingstone or next door at Avani. RL has the sun deck, Lounge, and main restaurant. Sundeck has a very limited menu – wish they had the Lounge menu available here. Lounge was burgers, salads, sandwiches, while the Restaurant was a more formal menu. Overall food was good, and very reasonably priced. The menu changed daily. I would say that the kitchen needs to refine the food a bit (i.e. getting the right temperatures on proteins. My medium rare steak came medium well, and salmon was served overcooked.). Breakfast was great. Combination of a buffet and dishes off the menu. The buffet did not have dishes labeled, so you had to keep asking the cooks standing around (who were not engaging). Many times they did not know what the smoothie was, juice, etc. Dishes off the menu would take up to 30 minutes, which is too long at breakfast. Food was good quality, and service was good. Activities – RL do not have any of their own activities. They have an activities desk that is manned by Bushtracks – a safari company. The staff were okay – not really explaining what each activity was, rather the price and time. Activities are not cheap. We had a River Safari on the first afternoon. Driven to the Bushtracks jetty, where we boarded a safari boat. There are not many animals to see, but good bird sightings, followed by sundowners on an island. Plenty to drink – white wine, beers, and soft drinks. Crew were good, and the food was excellent. Although the whole thing felt rushed i.e. fixed start and end times, which is not what we expect on safari. We were dropped off by boat at the RL jetty. We had booked a helicopter trip through United Charters before we had arrived. Had the RL website had more information on activities, etc., we would have booked through them. However for the Helicopter trip, we were picked up from the hotel, and driven 15 minutes to the helipad. Safety briefing and we were on board the Eurocopter. We had the two front seats, from where the views were incredible. The back passengers were 4 across. This trip was amazing. We got to see the falls so clearly – around a 15-minute journey. I would suggest you do this as your first activity, as it gives you a better idea of the falls, so when you do your other activities, you have a clearer perspective. From RL, you have free access to the Falls. It’s around a 20-minute walk, or you can get the shuttle to Avani, and then a 5-minute walk. The walk is great – get to see some giraffe, zebra, impala, monkeys and birds. We also paid one morning to go with a guide from Bushtracks. He explained the history of the falls, evolution, etc. For $13 pp it is a great 2 hours. He also brought ponchos and umbrellas. When checking in, would have been good if we were told that poncho’s were available at reception, and also advisable to carry water proofing for your cameras, phones, etc., and also to wear flip flops or water proof shoes, as you get soaked near the falls. David Livingstone Island is an island right on the edge of the falls, where you can either do the Devils Pool (dry season) or Angles Pool, which we did. Again Bushtracks did not really explain what it was just a trip for 2 hours with a meal and the price. The experience was incredible – on the edge of the Falls, and you actually get to get into the Zambezi River on the edge of the falls and experience the rush of the water, the thunder of the falls, and peer over the edge of the falls. We were served a good breakfast as well. We had a Monkey Tree dinner – booked online when we booked accommodation. Would not have know about this otherwise as there was no information at the hotel. This is a romantic riverside dining experience with a 5-course candlelit dinner. An incredible experience, with quality food and service. RL has a sommelier – young guy called Lucky. He is so passionate about his wines. There is a good climate controlled cellar, and a really good selection of wines – many not on the wine list. We really enjoyed our wine experience, and the bottles were reasonably priced. Service – the staff were so welcoming, genuine and warm. The service we experienced was understated five star. They anticipated needs, and were always on hand to explain and assist. I cannot say enough about the staff and how friendly yet professional they were. Spa – WOW. Had one of the best massages, and my wife had some great treatments. They use guest rooms temporarily while the spa bandas are built. It was nice that they were air-conditioned, and quiet. The staff were exceptional. We got to meet the GM near the jetty, and it was so refreshing to actually talk to a GM of a hotel, and feeling engaged. Credit to him for managing an exceptional team. Overall an exceptional property with outstanding service. I cannot recommend it enough. "The perfect begining for Africa! "

The hotel is like going to the past! Everything ...all the details are perfects in the room! The pool has the perfect view to The Falls, also you see zebras, girafes and vervet monkies aroun! You can walk to the Falls because the hotel is next to them!

"Comfortable and well located ....but..."

   16-02-2017
When we arrived and were shown to our (very comfortable) room I looked for the hotel information pack and for more details about the Victoria Falls and available tours etc. There was no information whatsoever. This seemed a strange omission but this is a hotel which misses out in many ways and is just not as good as it might be. The service is sloppy and sometimes surly too - much more staff training is clearly needed and probably more supervision as well. But the location on the banks of the Zambesi is wonderful, our room was well appointed and very comfortable - and of course the falls are spectacular.
