Over Delta Sydney

Our favorite

"Very poor wifi experience"

We are travelling with kids and in our world wifi is an important tool to reload movies for them and to check email and social media. Unfortunately, the Holiday Inn advertises high speed wifi, but we experienced choppy, slow wifi and could not download from Netflix. We spoke to others and they had the same issues, so the issue isn't unique to us. (It's actually amazing how frustrating this can be.) The pools was nice and the rooms are reasonable. Nonetheless, I couldn't recommend this hotel.

"A bit expensive, but beautiful setting, friendly and helpful staff."

PROS: The property is in very good condition. We paid an upcharge for a room with a waterfront view, and it was gorgeous. We were fortunate to have beautiful sunsets each of the two nights of our stay. The room was well fitted out and the furniture showed no undue signs of wear. The mattress was very comfortable – A- on our International Mattress Quality scale (an A+ is almost unheard-of in non-luxury hotels). The air conditioning was quiet and very effective. The toiletries were of very good quality. The indoor pool is chlorine-free and has a beautiful view through a “wall” of plate glass over the Sydney River. There is a very nice river walk that runs directly in back of the hotel and is easily accessed. The staff was unfailingly obliging and helpful. There were an adequate number of luggage carts with no pressure to use a bellhop instead (although actually, I don’t think there are any bellhops, in case you are in need of one). The wi-fi is included in the room rate and worked fine. CONS: Rather expensive for what is delivered. COMMENTS: Be aware that there is a $5 / night parking fee, and there are no good alternatives. We paid a modest extra sum for a river / harbor view and found it well worthwhile. In the winter it would probably be less worthwhile due to the short days. Breakfast options in the immediate vicinity are limited. We prepaid $7.50 apiece per day for breakfast. This was less than half the cost of their cheapest breakfast and a third of the cost of their typical breakfasts. It is impossible to order, say, just a muffin, or toast, etc. WOULD WE STAY AGAIN?: Yes. WOULD WE RECOMMEND? Yes, but with the caveat that the hotel is costly for what it is – cannot truly defend the price / value relationship.

"Great location, clean"

We love staying here for business and now it was a family trip that brought us to Cape Breton. Clean, bright hotel, water slide pool, water view rooms, breakfast included. We like to pack a lunch/snacks to have during our excursions- room had a mini fridge which made this possible.

"Not too friendly staff... mistake in booking"

The front desk folks are slow and not too friendly. I called to request more towels and was told "okay... I'll see what I can do" which is an odd reply. Rooms are nice... standard HI rooms, nothing special, but I requested waterfront view and got mostly parking lot. My booking should've come with breakfast as well... but was told it didn't here.

"Too expensive for mediocrity"

As a platinum member, I was not acknowledged as a member. When I mentioned this, I was dismissed. The hotel is worn and shows significant areas of neglect. On the positive side, the view is great. The hotel is not in an attractive area. For the price, I would have expected much better. Holiday Inn Express more welcoming and accommodating than this place.
