"A Magical Time"
My wife and I travel to Quebec quite often and although we have experienced many nice hotels in Quebec, this was our first time staying at the Chateau Frontenac. I can tell you, without a doubt, this is the best hotel in the city. Our room was very spacious with a king bed and many windows with an amazing view overlooking the beautiful St. Lawrence river. We found the bed to be very comfortable. Something I always look for is how comfortable the pillows are and ours were very good, I would rate them 9 out of 10. Like some other reviewers have pointed out, the bathroom was a tad small, however it was clean and tastefully appointed. My wife found the body lotion included in the bathroom amenities to be amazing. If you visit the Chateau Frontenac I highly recommend you try the buffet breakfast at the Place Dufferin. This isn't just an ordinary breakfast, it's an experience. My wife and I have had many hotel buffet breakfasts over the years, but nothing compares to this. It had everything from standard fare like eggs and bacon to an amazing assortment of fruits and deli meats. The pastries were especially delicious, quite possibly the best I have ever eaten. Lastly I would like to mention the excellent service we received. Everyone from the from the front desk to the parking attendant were polite and courteous. Neither my wife or I speak French, but we always felt welcomed and, unlike some other reviewers, we never had any issues regarding language whatsoever. Overall we had the best stay ever in our many visits to Quebec and we will definitely stay here again if we get the chance.
"Parker says, "Classy old hotel in a landmark building. Perfectly situated.""
This landmark couldn't be in a better spot.....right in the center of Old Quebec City. The lobby is smaller than you'd expect, with not a lot of space to sit, but it's very tastefully decorated. Our room was small, as is often the case with these old landmark hotels, but again, tastefully decorated and very clean. We were situated in one of the small dormers on a mid-level floor, overlooking the inner courtyard. I'm sure there are better views for people with more Fairmont points, but I wasn't there for the view!!! If you're a Harry Potter fan, this IS Hogwarts, so go up to the top floors and take some pictures. Warning: If you bring a car and leave it with them, it takes forever for them to retrieve it, so add in some extra time.
"An expensive let down"
Overall, we were disappointed with our stay. My husband and I came from the East coast on an Easter getaway, and decided to splurge to stay one night in Quebec City, and we chose the chateau because of its popularity. The service was great but for such a large amount of money, I was expecting more. I had built up what it would be like in my mind, and it didn't meet my expectations. Check in - chaotic. No real signs directing where to go/park. We ended up in the taxi line and were yelled at by two different people in french. When we finally go around the taxi line, the valet area was chaos with so many people coming and going and so little space. Eventually we got noticed and a valet took care of us. Checking in took about 20 minutes as there were several people waiting and only two people working the check in desk. Room - we had a run-of-the-house standard room. It had a king bed and a sitting area with 2 chairs. It was large, but from the reviews it sounds like one of the unrenovated rooms. It was clean but the decor was old for sure. The bed was very firm and the mattress at the end of its lifespan. The bathroom was very small. In fact, so small that the rack for the extra towels/toilet paper etc was actually INSIDE the shower. We had to remove everything each time we showered so that it didn't get wet. The view was the most disappointing part of the entire trip. It was an inside view, and consisted of venting and air conditioning machines. I knew that we wouldn't get an amazing view unless we booked a $$$ rate, however, I was expecting more than a dirty air conditioner. Pool - small for such a large hotel. We didn't use it as it was full of children, and there are only 2 days a week in which there are designated adult-only swim times. That was unfortunate. Restaurants - we did not go to any, however, it seems if you do want a view of the river, the only place to get it from was the restaurants. I had assumed there would be a lounge or some type of lookout area to offer the view of the river to the guests. Disappointed that this was not the case. Location - lovely spot in terms of walkability. We were able to leave the hotel and walk around easily. Service - the service was great. We requested turndown service and were pleased with the complimentary slippers and refreshments. There were no robes in our room but I called to request, and within 10 minutes, someone had them to our door. The bell desk also had umbrellas for guests which was handy as it was raining during our visit. Tip - join the presidents club online - it is free, and it will allow for free wifi (which is normally $16/day) and a speedier check in. Another tip - try to find private parking if possible as parking at the hotel is $36/day!
We had a room on the Gold Level. We booked ahead of time and got a great deal. There is a great lounge for the Gold Level. The free Gold Level Lounge breakfast bar offers enough for a great full breakfast. The appetizers offered beginning at 5pm is delicious, and gives you enough food to satisfy dinner. The amount of money paid for upgrading to Gold Level is saved by not purchasing food.
"Wonderful location, lots of history and character "
An absolutely amazing hotel. It is beautiful and luxurious. You cannot be in a better location for exploring Quebec City: shops, cafes, waterfront churches are all within walking distance. This is a hotel with a lot of history. This is not an average hotel.
