Over Fairmont Royal York Hotel

"Old world charm"

The rooms are clean, well furnished, and mainly quiet. A little more expensive than others, but it is right down town, across the street from Union Station -- Via Rail, Go Transit, and TTC Subway are all accessible from the concourse, without going outside. Shuttle from the Island Airport stops at the door -- at least for now. Restaurants within the hotel are expensive, but the food is very good. There are a plethora of restaurants within a block or two of the hotel, and the concourse has food courts that are open weekday office hours. Join the free Fairmont President's Club to get free Internet. Well worth the time to enroll. This is an elegant, old hotel, with modern renovated rooms and conveniences, without loosing her regal stature. Both the Queen and Prince Philip stay here when in town.

"Gold Floor never disappoints!"

My husband and I visit the Gold Floor twice a year or so and recently stayed for our anniversary. As always, our arrival Friday night was a breeze-- drop the car off at the valet, meander through the regal foyer as though dropping into a fairytale, hang a right at the clock and spiral staircase and zoom up to the 12th floor on the readily available Express elevator. The concierge is expecting us and after a brief exchange to provide credit card information we are whisked away to our room. Many of the rooms have been renovated and are just beautiful-- royal-looking, still, but with a modern twist of blue and silver-- but this stay we are in a traditionally appointed room of golden brocade and red velvet overlooking the CN tower (or rather, the CN tower is overlooking our room). We open the door to the lights glowing softly, classical music playing in the background, and Moet on ice alongside chocolate strawberries (brownie points to my husband, for arranging). Ahhhhhhh, relaxation. The Gold Floor takes your visit to the Royal York up a notch with access to a lounge that offers a delightful ambience, breakfast, hors d'oeuvres and desserts at set times as well as coffee, tea, and alcohol for purchase. It is WELL worth the added cost if you are looking for access to a lounging space other than your room. The gold floor concierge team aims to make your stay memorable, flawless, and convenient. Rejean was particularly wonderful to us this visit, inquiring about our plans and then going above and beyond to get us last minute reservations at STK (something I couldn't manage even 2 weeks in advance!). He was passionate about us having a fantastic dining experience and was eager to do what he could to give us just that, even going so far as to surprise us by covering our first round of drinks at dinner. We honestly could have cried, we felt so well looked after, and we weren't even IN the Royal York at the time. BIG thank you to Rejean for this added special gesture and for helping make our weekend stay one for the memory books. We will definitely be back again soon!

"First time at the Royal York"

We booked into the Gold level room with access to the Gold lounge. The rooms are nice and comfortable. Of course, the staff were charming and helpful upon check in. The Royal York is such a beautiful building and its history is what brought me to stay. The only part of the stay which was less than stellar was the restaurant in the lower level of the hotel. The food was just okay, and the staff could have been more attentive. I suppose most people only go there for drinks. As a Fairmont member, you get free wifi.

"Royal York re visited"

Consistently professional and upstanding service. We chose in room dining as it is presented in such a fashion as to make it as special as dining out...but in the comfort of your own suite, including flowers! Unfortunately the pool and hot tub always seem too busy for a relaxing swim, though. We missed the white robes in our suite as well. Hope it was just an oversight and not a new norm.

"Not the place for a peaceful stay"

The good: The Fairmont Royal York has a prime location across the street from Union Station (where the commuter GO Trains, national VIA trains, and the airport train UPX arrive/depart). It's also on top of a TTC subway station and connected to the city's extensive PATH system (you can walk all the way up to the Eaton Centre without ever going outside). The historic hotel also has a beautiful lobby. The bad: Most of the rooms, whether classic or renovated, are small. Only a few have nice views. The walls are paper-thin so be prepared to hear everything from your neighbours -- from talking and TV sounds to showering and flushing. During our stay there was also a lot of noise in the hallways at all hours. There are express checkout options but checking in can be time-consuming depending on the time of day (we waited about 10 minutes in the line-up). The Royal York also charges approx. $16 a day for WiFi access, which is ridiculous and outdated. (If you join the Fairmont Gold program, it's free.) Go across the street and use the free WiFi at Union Station.
