"Stay elsewhere if you need internet access"
I have stayed at the Sandman here before many times a few years ago, and I don't remember the internet being as bad as my recent stay. I have also stayed at teh Sandman in teh south off deerfoot, and don't remember teh internet that bad. It was worse than dial up.I don't know if the construction had anything todo with it, but it was horrible. I also paid a premium price not the $98 ($!80) so I did have higher expectation. Whether for business or as a tourist, you need to have decent internet. Even talking to their internet provider (who was condescending and rude) was painful and after complaining how bad the internet sucked, he fixed my problem....but didn't... the speed of teh internet still sucked. Also there is no Shaw Open WIfi nearby to make up for this, so , either bring your own internet or stay somewhere else if that is a requirement for you. My two star is simply for the internet, which made the value bad. the people working there were great and the rooms were clean. Beware the renos though as that is something else I didn't know before I booked.
Plus points Price - I guess there are different rates depending upon when and who you book with but I felt the price I paid for a 9 night stay was extremely good value for money Location - the hotels is situated in the downtown area and right on the C train line making most things accessible - for me who was attending a few Calgary Flames matches and visiting various theatres it was ideal. Food -there is both a Moxies Bar and Restaurant on site and the food/drink are reasonably priced and very nice, Staff - I found all staff to be helpful and accommodating. Rooms - these were spacious, well maintained, clean and well equipped. Negative points Noise - 4 of the rooms on each floor are next to the elevator which makes for consistent noise as the walls are fairly thin - my room was at the end of the corridor which negated this problem but when groups of people are in the corridor you can clearly hear every word spoken Elevator - this quite frankly was shambolic with extremely long waits on frequent occasions. Business Centre - nice room but only 1 computer available. Renovations - these were disruptive in terms of noise and the fact that the pool and hot tub were out of action and I was not made aware of this at the time of booking - however this I assume was the fault of Expedia and not the hotel. The renovations which still have some way to go should address some of these problems. Overall this is a clean friendly and attractively priced hotel which I would recommend.
"Construction chaos "
When I booked I wasn’t made aware there was ongoing construction which meant the pool and related amenities were shut down. I specifically booked a hotel with a pool because I wanted to use it. The construction meant a noisy, cluttered lobby and getting elevators was a pain as the crews had them tied up. I understand upgrades happen but this seems highly disorganized and chaotic with little thought to guest comfort. And I will repeat, I wasn’t made aware of the construction when I booked, which was only a few weeks earlier. The rooms themselves were average, nothing I haven’t experienced in hotels at lower rates. All in all it was a bad stay. The one bright part was the bar was pretty good. I hope the upgrades bring about a lot of changes because in my opinion this place needs extensive overhauling.
"GREAT IMPROVEMENTS... "
I recently was on abusiness trip for 3 days with a 2-night stay. 99% I usually stay in the higher end hotels when I am here in Calgary, however due to circumstances, not of my choice, I was booked at the Sandman Hotel. I loathed the fact that I was staying here, however upon arrival I could see lots of construction is being done in the foyer and lobby. I immediately asked the front desk “Guest Service Manager†if there was newly renovated suite and if so, I’d like to upgrade. She said certainly and it was not an issue. The long and short, I had a brand-new room on the 18th floor; corner view of Southwest Calgary, and let’s be honest in the dead of winter, there wasn’t a lot to look out at. The bottom line, the room; a king bed; bed sheets; bathroom; carpets and even baseboards were COMPLETELY renovated. I will give credit when credit is due, this hotel and its staff DESERVE a five-star rating for the much needed improvements from when I stayed here in 1988 during the Calgary Olympics. Lastly, they have underground parking and they have an attached restaurant called Moxies, which is a great pub and restaurant.
I’m sure this is a nice hotel most of the time. However they’re doing A TON of construction right now. The pool area is closed. Gym smells & tastes like drywall dust. Noise on lower lvls is obnoxious!
