Over The Fairmont Palliser
Naturally.

The Fairmont Palliser ligt centraal gelegen in Calagary.

The room was gorgeous! The spa was gorgeous and the front desk people were welcoming! Food in the restaurant was a little overpriced for what you got. The chicken burgers were dry but service was great!
"Royal Wedding Inspired High Tea at the Palliser"
The Fairmont Palliser has been a major part of the story of Calgary for nearly 100 years. It is a grand railroad hotel one of several spread across Canada. So it was with some anticipation that we looked forward to having a classic English high tea there recently. After all, another Fairmont hotel, The Empress, in Victoria BC, is world famous for its afternoon tea service. Having been a frequent visitor to London I can state with some confidence that this British tradition is well known to me. Well, the Palliser was a major, very expensive disappointment. The price was C$55 each and if you wanted the "Markle" sparkler cocktail (basically a Bellini) that would set you back $14. We were seated in the hotel lobby not a dining room at a small table with large, uncomfortable chairs. The waitress showed us the teas available (nine) a small selection, and they were presented in a dog eared cellophane wrapper. Selections were made and the tea arrived quickly; no surprise, we were the only ones there. My daughter's cup had a hole in it and thus leaked. The china looked cheap. The 3 tiered food arrived plus an ordinary plate with the same stuff on it (the 3 tiered piece was too small...normally you get two). This is where I, as the one who was paying, started to get a little peeved. As I said, English afternoon tea is something I know about and I know what I have paid for it. The food we received was second rate what there was of it. Cucumber sandwiches? Yes. These were made with whole slices open faced. Scones? Not warm and the jam was stuck on the lowest plate making it hard to retrieve. I will guess that the entire serving of food provided to the three of us was worth maybe $15 to $20; the tea maybe $2 per pot; the cocktail? In most bars Bellinis, good ones, go for about $9. The total here was perhaps $40. The bill was $165 plus $14. The Palliser is a fine hotel and I have many memories, good memories visiting it over the years. This was a major letdown. They had an opportunity to do something really special here; after all the Queen has stayed at this hotel more than once. This was not an English afternoon tea; it was an attempt to capitalize on the royal connection and the wedding that dominates the news. I would not be writing this review if the price had been more reasonable. There is a hotel in London, which I will not name but where I have stayed, that is ranked in the top five in that city. Afternoon tea at that hotel, for which it is renowned, cost less than the offering from the Palliser and that included one glass of champagne each. The service was impeccable of course and the tea was presented in actual jars with about 25 varieties. When the scones ran out more arrived at no extra cost. I could go on. Most British hotels, and cruise lines like Cunard, make a big deal about afternoon tea. If you have a chance, by all means find out what all the fuss is about. I would not recommend the Fairmont Palliser's afternoon tea service.
"Amazing and breath taking"
Nothing but fabulous as soon as we arrived on the front steps of the hotel. From the moment we arrive until we left the staff was amazing, the room was wonderful. Everyone involved with the Fairmount went out of their way to be the upmost polite and made sure we were always taken care of.
"Another comfortable stay"
I know when I get to the Fairmont, I will have a good sleep and an enjoyable stay. The location is great as there are many restaurants around, plus a Goodlife fitness. Staff is always friendly and my room is always clean!
We've stayed at the Fairmont Palliser numerous times over the years and it never disappoints. The Gold Floor is one of the best, with lots of light and views of the city and mountains. I love the historical details of the hotel, and the location is central and walkable to Calgary's many inner city neighbourhoods and attractions.
