"Picturesque Winter Wonderland"
From the moment I booked, the staff were great! They accommodated our early arrival and on our last day, they allowed us an hour later check in so that we could sneak in one last morning hike! The people at the front desk were enthusiastic, welcoming, upbeat and ready to offer their own experience of the area to help with planning daytime activities. Snowshoes, skates, hockey, ice boccie ball, sleigh rides, dog sleds, and hiking trails are all just outside your front door. I had feared that the room might be tiny based on the limited photos on the website but it was perfect for a couple. With a large bathroom, a gas fireplace and an unbeatable view of the mountains and pyramid lake. There isn't much going on after dark here. So its best to plan on savoring some peace and quiet in the evening, or making plans to head into Jasper. The Pines Restaurant was the one disappointing aspect of our stay. We gave it a try for dinner one evening and were not impressed with the value for the food we received. I commend the menu for its local spin. However, the bison burger I ordered was burnt and overcooked all the way through. At breakfast the next morning, we were once again disappointed with the lack of value for our dollars spent. The staff in the restaurant were once again amazing. The food was just not what we were hoping for and surprisingly pricey since the resort itself was so affordable.
"Quiet, Scenic and Very Reasonable"
Pyramid Lake Resort is located a short distance away from the Jasper town site. If you’re not familiar with Jasper, Pyramid Lake Resort is actually “up†the mountain from the back of the town site so the easiest way to get there is to find “Pyramid Lake Road†which is off Jasper’s main strip road (Connaught Dr) by Bear’s Paw Bakery and follow it north all the way to the resort. As long as you’re moving “up†the mountain, you’ll end up at the resort (it’s about a 10 minute drive up the mountain). Pyramid Lake Resort is a series of condo style rooms located right on Pyramid Lake. This is an older resort so the rooms do show a bit of age but it’s not horrendous or unlivable. Far from it but if you are used to staying in high end, upscale rooms, this resort is not it. It’s geared towards folks who want to enjoy the outdoors so the resort is setup to be able go canoeing, biking and hiking right from your doorstep. The rooms are respectable and appear to be well kept. Our room had a kitchenette and a gas fireplace in it which worked quite well and most of the rooms face the lake so the view is spectacular. For a family with children, the kitchenette was fantastic for us. My one beef with the room was the sofa bed where the mattress was quite thin so not the most comfortable. The beds themselves seemed decent though so as long as you’re not the one who has to sleep on the sofa bed, you’re good. There is a main building (where you check-in) that has a restaurant and a small gift shop (not really that great). The common hot tub is also at the main building. It’s not overly large but will accommodate a good number of folks. There is no swimming pool at this resort. We had breakfast at the restaurant on one of the days and the food was quite decent. This resort is pet friendly so if you have a dog, you can bring them along. We brought both of our dogs on this trip and had no issues at all. The pet charge is very reasonable (extra $15 per night for pets). My family and I will definitely come back to this resort again. TIPS: 1. The hot tub is at the main building so if you’re in one of the rooms in the other buildings, it can be a bit of a walk back to the main building. In the summer, it’s not a big deal but if you’re there in the winter, it’s a bit of a pain so bring some comfy clothes for that walk back. 2. This resort is up the mountain away from the town site so plan your day. It’s a bit of a pain driving back and forth if you forgot something. 3. The drive up the mountain is a very winding road so don’t speed as it’s common to see folks walking on it. It’s also common to see wild life (we’ve seen elk and bears) on this road so don’t speed. 4. I frequently see rate deals on Groupon, Trivago or Tripadvisor for this resort so you should be able to find very decent deals. 5. Don’t be the one that has to sleep on the sofa bed.
""Peace & Quiet by the Lake""
Pyramid Lake Resort is a lovely place to stay. It is a little bit out of the town of Jasper (5mins by car) but the reward of a lovely lake & the peace & quiet is well worth it. Our room was a good size comfortable tidy & clean. Staff friendly. Did try the restaurant for breakfast a little pricey very nice but not dinner as it was rather expensive for us. Overall a lovely place to stay opposite a beautiful lake.
"Great Little Get Away"
We have heard previously from others about this resort. We chose it as we were looking for a quiet place in the mountains for hiking and snow shoeing, and accommodated pets. Lots of trails around the premises for this and great for our dog. Also available is cross country skiing trails and on the lake, kids also did some skating on the lake. Rentals are available at the resort for most of the winter activities. Only the one restaurant, we did not try, fairly pricey. It is a 10 to 15 minute drive to Jasper to find a restaurant, but did find pizza places that did deliver up there. We weren't sure what to expect for the kitchenette, but now know for next time what meals we can bring to prepare in house. Really liked the fact that I was able to get up in the morning to take the dog out and ending up doing a 2 hour hike on a trail right behind the cabin. All trails are will marked and did the loop right back to our door. We will be coming back next winter for sure, and maybe a summer trip to take advantage of the lake.
Pyramid Lake Resort in Jasper lacks some of the refinement of others in the town proper, but you can't beat the location. Sunrises over the lake in the morning, a short hike to loop from the resort around to Pyramid Island for picnics or great night-sky photography, and lake access right off the main entry. Parking is ample and even though we were there at full capacity the staff was pleasant and able to accommodate our questions quickly. We stayed during the Dark Sky Festival and the place was great for what we needed. Heat and cleanliness were the two biggest criticisms, especially the bathroom, but we spent so little time in the hotel itself it didn't really matter. Notable though was that the wireless internet was pretty much unusable. Good for the type of vacation we had, but might be a concern to others.
