"poor service, don't expect too much"
-poor service of the staff when checked in , the lady was no smile and not welcome. She was so rude when gave me the passport ! -and other lady no smile and not helpful when i asked her where the shuttle bus stopped outside the hotel -Only the male staff was helpful -don't expect too much on the room but it was really hot , when I opened the window, someone was smoking outside -no kettle and TV in the room -Overall the washroom has been renovated before and good location near to lake louise -the restaurant was not bad and it was an alternative choice for dinner except The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Resort Hotel , the staff was nice.
"2 nights at Deer Lodge"
Pros - near to Lake Louise Cons - No kettle in the room. Only manage to have one the next day after 3 requests from the counter. Not a very friendly lady. Could hear footsteps and noises outside our room.
"We stayed for the lake not the hotel."
If you want to stay near Lake Louise accomodation options are limited. On the plus side Deer Lodge is perfectly located a short stroll from the lake and parking is therefore not a problem. The hotel looks quaint inside and out and is much cheaper than its large neighbour inappropriately sited on the lake shore. We wouldnt want to stop at Lake Louise for more than one night and so the 'hotel experience' isn't too important. On the minus side the hotel isn't cheap and our room needed extensive refurbishment including a new matress. It perhaps says a lot that this is the only hotel reception that I can recall which didn't ask us, on checking out, 'was everything satisfactory during your stay with us?'
The only reason that this hotel did not receive a terrible rating from me is due to the location, having the opportunity to take an early morning walk around the lake before the crowds descended and as the sun rose was a memory that will stay with me forever. The hotel is the only one along with the Fairmont that is close walking distance to the lake, the rest being located down in the lower part of town. Unless you plan to eat at the hotel or the more expensive Fairmont there are no restaurants within reasonable walking distance. One tip if you fancy fast food takeaway is to order pizza which is made at the off site staff quarters of the Fairmont hotel, we saved a delivery charge and walked the two minutes to order and collect it (expect to queue along with off duty youngsters) we had to wait quite a while though but it was cheap and delicious. Ask the receptionist for details as they aren't published at the hotel. We were informed a couple of days prior to arrival that our room had maintanence problems so had to take a lesser spec room (we were refunded the difference by our agent and offered breakfast due to this) but oh dear, this is quite possibly the worse room we have ever stayed in and well below par in comparison to all of the other Canadian hotels we stayed in on our trip. The room was small, dark and horrible brown bedding, the furniture cheap, old dark wood, the carpet worn and dirty. The bathroom had no windows and a small bath, which I can't imagine anyone wanting to use. The shower as others have reported was scalding hot, a warning notice is simply just not good enough for paying guests. The grout between the tiles on the floor was loose and we had to lay a towel on the floor to stop our feet from getting cut. There was no TV or drink making facilities. The rest of the hotel was dark and so very dated. The reception staff were friendly, we choose not to eat in the restaurant after receiving a poor service during the day when having drinks on the terrace (waiting far too long to be served and then to receive drinks). There is a large hot tub on the roof, but we were totally put off from using this after walking up the filthy staircase to get there. Luckily we were only staying here for one night otherwise I would have changed hotel. I do believe some rooms may be better than the one we had but the price you pay for this hotel is no where near what you would expect to receive for your money so this was not a case of paying for what you get. Deer Lodge could be so much more and an alternative to those who don't want to pay the costs of the Fairmont, but unless this hotel has a serious upgrade I would spend the extra down the road and probably get better overall value for money.
"Fish and Chips."
We had an evening meal in the bar of this hotel. There is a choice of bar or restaurant in which to eat. They both have their own menus although we were allowed to choose from the restaurant menu if we wanted, although we found it to be rather expensive. It was a midweek evening and fairly busy.We both had some homemade bread to start and then Fish and chips. No room for dessert as portions here and throughout Canada were large.Friendly service by Australian girl. At a weekend you would need to book a table.
