Over Deer Lodge Lake Louise

"Rustic - for some that's great others not so much"
We arrived at Deer Lodge in the middle of our Canadian odyssey. It is not like any other accomodation we stayed in. As this was our first trip after retirement is was a 4 - t star hour journey and Deer Lodge is advertised as 3 star which is not accurate either. The problem for our party was it was not what we were expecting. Al this said we loved 3 of 4 of us loved the place, 1 characterised it as a dump. Deer Lodge is as original to its original heritage as it can be whilst still operating just down the road form a 5 star facility of some fame. It has the views and is comfortable right down to the hot spa on the roof. The common lounge area with big fire and even bigger armchairs to relax in is fantastic. The staff are plentiful and young and very helpful and professional. The rooms are basic with a bed, wardrobe a table and a toilet/shower, no tv and fairly small, on some cases very small. There is no lift so if you get a third floor room you have to hand carry your gear up, however they do offer porters who are more than willing to do the lifting. The stairs are original and creak and groan, the rooms are for from soundproof. The restaurants on site are ok. The lack of tv didn't bother 3 of us at all. Our one team member that called it a dump over thought the downs discussed above. Had we been told what the place was like before we arrived I doubt it would have been a problem, it was more the surprise after luxury accomodation every where else. As long as you are happy with rustic accomodation you will have no problems with Deer Lodge. If you want 5 star, go to the Lake Louise Fairmont and pay the $700 a night (the views over the lake are better). I would stay there again and I would look forward to the experience.
"Gourmet Mountain Getaway Package"
I'll start with the good. You are in Lake Louise and close to the lake, the Lodge has the old world charm, the roof top hot tub has a great view at night. We stayed in a king bed room so we were in the "newer" section of the lodge. The room was clean and the bathroom was modern (except it would be nice to have a fan in there). We had supper included in our package and we were very pleased with our waiter Tim and the food options. For the cons, staff couldn't answer some basic questions about the property at the front desk, such as, "Are there lockers in the change rooms for the hot tub?" The rooms are very basic compared to their sister properties and the breakfast buffet was a huge disappointment with everything looking like they were heated up from the day before (go elsewhere or order a la carte). While we were there, another couple came in, lifted the lid of each chaffing dish, gathered their belongings and left. Even though the buffet staff seemed uninterested in doing their jobs, at least they didn't use they hands to move buffet refills from the transport dish to the chaffing dish, which we saw happening at Buffalo Mountain Lodge. Finally, the hot tub lacks reasonable jets. When you push the button it starts to move the water around, but you'll only notice if you are sitting in front of a jet. Next time I would spend the extra $200 and go to the Fairmont up the road. I'm happy we went but we wouldn't go back.
"Quaint, period lodge - great Lakeside location"
Stayed at the Lodge for one night last week. The communal lounge area was particularly cosy with a roaring fire to keep out the chill, having walked half way round the frozen Lake Louise (that was still stunning). I have sympathy with some of the negative comments about the corridors (reminded me of student accommodation ) but our room was absolutely first class (Heritage room). Lovely decor with good quality furnishings and toiletries. Breakfast was delicious and all the staff we came into contact with were very pleasant and helpful. Fantastic proximity to the Lake, not so good for the village unless you have a car.
I have just come back from a trip to Canada/Alaska, Deer Lodge would not be top of my list of places to stay, food expensive, not good at all, very basic hotel. people are very nice, if you have health problems this is not the hotel for you.
