"Beautiful location but better resorts elsewhere"

   03-12-2016
We went for a few days with great expectations but sadly it just didn't live up to them. I think the concept of 'good service' just interrupts the staffs day! We stayed in an Ocean View Studio in one of the Pacific Trail Units. Clearly in need of a renovation. Coffee table badly beaten up, Kitchen appliances not fitting properly and cupboards scratched. (this place isn't cheap but in fairness not super expensive either) The poor design has you laying in bed gazing at the stove and kitchen where in reality more careful planning could have given you a direct ocean view. The shower button was finicky at best and regularly didn't stay on. We had read there was only limited housekeeping in the Trail Suites (interrupts the staff's day?) but would you believe you had to make your own bed and sweep your own floor? Is this actually a hotel? I've stayed elsewhere for half the price and had more complete service. A visit to the hot tub found it smelling strongly of chlorine and covered in a thick foamy scum...lovely. The Spa was excellent as was the restaurant and bar. However, on our 3rd morning I was showering at 9am when all of a sudden the water ceased. Phone calls to the front desk said they had to turn off the water. They were sorry!! No notice, no offer of alternative accommodation, no showers, no toilets, no coffee or tea. It would appear to have been a localized problem so most of the resort was OK but as the plumber was working outside the Unit immediately the water went off they clearly had time to warn us before the plumber actually arrived. I spoke to the front desk clerk who was totally unaware that this was unacceptable service. Of course they had to deal with the repair but they had no concept of the impact on their customers and nor did they care. We have choices as to where we stay for weekends away and sadly it wont be Black Rock in the future.

"A great getaway for the four-day weekend."

We went to Ucluelet from Seattle, which is a day's trip. First we stayed in Tsawwassen overnight, then took ferry across to Nanaimo. It's 3 hours drive from Nanaimo. Once we got there, they gave a room with a gorgeous view. There's also a little kitchenette with refrigerator. There's also a gas fireplace. IT's a very peaceful environment as it poured all day one day so we had to stay in. There's also a workout room that's open 24/7. Since it was a weekend, there was no opening for spa. If you want spa service, call ahead.

"Celebration of our 50th Wedding Anniversary"

Warm, welcoming, very comfortable studio suite. Enjoyed fine dining on our first evening and also had a delightful conversation with their fine Chef David, who will be adding some Peruvian (his home country) delicacies to his next menu. Enjoyed the luxurious spa and massage...very professional. Spectacular views from the bar facility....but disappointing food. This was our second visit and would return again with family as we did on our first visit.

"Weekend stay"

   22-11-2016
We stayed over a weekend for a wedding. The location is very nice a bit of a drive from the airport but worth it. On paper this resort is amazing views and amazing reviews, but I personally found it was a lot of modern touches at a cheap quality touches. The key at check in didn't work to the room, when going back to the main lodge it was almost a brush off to the issue. The toilet button was broken, the shower switch to rain shower wouldn't stay on so it required a one hand shower while holding the button the dish washer was broken (we didn't use) but you could tell the door was bent and the frame around it was displaced. there was an odd red splatter on the wall by the bed (dont think it was blood but either way it was unsettling). The coffee maker was not sealed properly and the second you touched it as it finished brewing the pressure of the steam that built up in the machine released it self towards the person resulting in a light burn, the hot tub and pool it seems beyond neglected with brown water, i understand it is an outdoor facility but i am not sure when the last time it was cleaned as it was foam layer on top of one of the hot tubs with tree branches and leafs floating in the water for all three days we were there and again brown water. The only highlight of the weekend was the lounge staff which were fun to deal with and very welcoming. The food was very good i will give it that much. but as this is a review of the hotel it felt short on most items. The stuff in and around the hotel were very cold and uninviting. There was an issue with the spa which i was charged for, which is fine... but when i asked to speak to the manager of the day she didn't bother of coming out of the office but left the girl with relaying a msg to me of "you need to call the spa manager she is off till Monday". The management seem to lack connection to their guests and leaving the poor front line staff dealing with the guests. As i travel quite a bit i understand certain things might be missed or overlooked. but the one thing you can control is customer service which fell short on all account besides of passing the buck around, to this day no follow up from the spa or hotel management happened. To be fair to an extent, if the above items don't bother you, its a good location to stay as it is right on the water.

"Mini honeymoon"

   21-11-2016
My husband and I got married in May. We really didn't know where we wanted to go for our honeymoon so we finally decided to visit Tofino and Ucluelet. The Black Rock resort in Ucluelet came highly recommended by a lot of friends. Our room was not bad-not directly on the water, but there is a view. There is the main hotel building and kind of condos off the building. I think we may have been in one of the farthest condos from the main building but it's not a bad walk (about 5 mins). The restaurant in the hotel is called Fetch and it's a bit pricy but the food is ok. Really nice area to stay and I wouldn't hesitate to come back.
