"Great Retro Hotel - Kids loved it!"
Loved it! 60/70's throwback Room decor with dial phones! Laundry. Very clean rooms. Typewriters for postcards. Small indoor pool with water slides - fun. Free bikes and skateboards - easy ride to harbor path. We rented a tandem bike! Easy VW Bus transport to town. Great breakfast. Great customer service. Kids loved it too.
"Not too old to be a Hipster!"
3 night stay. Funky colourful rooms. Clean, well appointed. Quirky and updated. Close to shopping and restaraunts. Great set up for a suite. Attentive staff with great amenities. Never ate at the hotel bit it was always full for breakfast. A heads up would have been nice for the road construction on Douglas directly outside the hotel...made entering and exiting with a vehicle a bit difficult.
"Funky motel with a great vibe and fantastic after-care"
The Zed is a basic motel painted in searing pop art colours, with old fashioned dial phones (and instructions), a laundromat, and two brightly coloured free shuttle buses to take you downtown. Reception has free coffee and lots of vinyl records with a player. And comics. They sell water bottles which say 'Rebels against the Ordinary'. I bought one and brought it back home, then left it on a train. When I emailed to ask if I could buy a replacement, they sent me a care package including a new bottle and lots of lovely Canadian treats. What smashing people. I will stay here again in a heartbeat.
"Inexpensive Clean comfortable"
This is a very simple hotel, inexpensive but clean and comfortable. It is located on a major road, the road noise is loud. Construction across the street is loud during the day. No coffee in the room but coffee/tea is available in the lobby.
We stayed one night at Hotel Zed. It was the first time we had tried it. We gave it a whirl due to both the reasonable price and the favourable Tripadvisor reviews. We were very pleased with our choice. The Hotel Zed is really fun. It's basic but bright and clean and the staff are very pleasant. Reception was friendly, helpful and welcoming. If you’re not sure where the check-in desk is, it shares a space with the restaurant (The Ruby). They informed us that free coffee and tea was available around the clock. What impressed me was the availability of a large refrigerated carton of actual cream for the coffee! We were informed about the other extras the hotel has: ping pong, bikes, free shuttle, pool and hot tub. The building is "old style motel", so balconies run along in front of the rooms. As the hotel fronts onto busy Douglas Street, if you need quiet, it would be best to book in the back. The room is described as compact, and it certainly is. But it is also functional. There were a number of lights, so it was possible to have good, bright lighting, a rarity in hotels. There was plenty of counter space for toiletries. The shower (no tub) had lots of hot water. The bed and bedding was comfortable. Everything was very clean. The heater work well to keep the room cozy on a chilly night. The one complaint was the noisiness of the heater as it switched off and on. We enjoyed the colourful decor and the quirky retro style, including the old fashioned rotary phone with directions for use. We loved the Buddha bible in the desk drawer, and the bulletin board with all the normal hotel literature posted is a good idea. The complimentary yo-yo was a hoot! Complimentary ear plugs were also provided! We would love to come back when it's warmer to take advantage of the complimentary bike rentals. The hotel is located a bit of a ways from downtown so we would recommend having a car but the hotel does offers free hourly shuttles. We would highly recommend this fun hotel!!
