Vancouver, de Gateway van de Pacific, is een van de populairste steden ter wereld. En niet voor niets. Vancouver is tevens uitvalsbasis voor een (auto-)reis door het westen van Canada of voor een uitstapje naar Vancouver Island.

When we arrived at this hotel our first impressions were not very favourable. The room we were allocated looked as though it could do with refurbishment. We left the cases in the room and decided to find somewhere for a coffee to think about what to do next. On walking out of the hotel, we noticed there were a lot of people sleeping rough which did initially shock us. We went to the hotel reception and voiced our misgivings about the room and the area and the duty manager (Justin) was called. He told us that Vancouver has a homeless problem - he did upgrade us to a better room on a higher floor which was much better. To be fair, there are some good restaurants around and the inhouse restaurant (Moxies) was excellent - a great atmosphere and the food and service was very good. Thanks again to Justin for his help and understanding our initial apprehensions.

"Solid place to stay"

The hotel is just like every high rise hotel on the planet. The best thing about it is the great neighborhood in the heart of the West End. Close to the water, plenty of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops nearby.

"Good Service"

We had booked a queen bed apartment which we upgraded to a King bed apartment with a pullout for an extra $30 per night- we were booked in for four nights- . I wasn't that impressed as I didn't find it that clean. Dirty marks on the fridge, floor, dirty paintwork and wall paper old and stained. I could actually cope with all that until I spent a night trying to sleep on the pullout. The mattress was so thin I could feel the metal bars through it. I tried everything and ended up trying to sleep on the cushions. Needless to say I had very little sleep. Well, without sleep and very grumpy next day it was unfortunate for the Duty Manager to be in the lift with me. I was very polite but told him how disgusted I was with the whole booking. He asked me to leave it with him and he would see what he could do. On checking back with him (Roberto) later, found he had upgraded us to a suite on the 23rd floor. What a change! Clean, parquetry flooring and a decent mattress on the couch. He also advised me that they would not charge me the upgrade fee for the first night of the stay. I was so impressed with this level of service and I highly commend Roberto for his handling of the issue. It made our stay so much more pleasant and certainly put a more positive slant on our stay at The Sandman suites. It is situated in Davie Street, surrounded by lots of eating places and bars. Jodie's bar next door had fairly good food and apply hour every afternoon between 3-6pm. It was only a $10 taxi ride to Canada place and the Wharves and around $40 to the airport. It was good to have an apartment where we could prepare our own breakfasts and it wasn't until we were leaving that I discovered a washer/dryer in the cupboard that I could have used. I hope that the Sandman continues to upgrade its suites- if so I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel. And again, I would like to commend the Duty Manager Roberto on his dealing with our issues.

"Didn't meet expectations"

Utterly disappointed in this hotel. Refurb is greatly needed, the whole place felt tired and unclean. And it wasn't unclean as in untidy or dusty, it was more that the age and overall wear and tear of the place really showed itself so there were markings on walls, dirt in the windowframes, old worn out carpets etc. The room layout was unsuitable for us as a family with older teenagers. The bathroom made me sad to enter as the beige was overwhelming and you could barely turn around to get in the shower. For a couple or a young family the bedroom + sofa bed might be fine, but for us it wasn't helpful at all. The sofa bed is also small and uncomfortable and not easy to sleep in. Speaking of sleep, we didn't get all that much due to the vibrant location plus poor sound proofing. Perhaps if you're from a city you'd be used to drunken voices and ambulance sirens in the early hours, but if not then you're in for a long night. The room did have a balcony, which was appreciated, but again the floor paint was peeling and the railings were rusty and like the rest of the hotel needs a revamp. I'd also add that the wifi signal is very poor in the hotel rooms. We started in a room on the 9th floor which had issues connecting, we moved to the 12th floor and still the connection dropped frequently and it took several minutes to load even the google homepage. The location had its pros and cons. It is fairly central to most touristy things in Vancouver and there are a number of nice bakeries / grocers / cafes on the street. However it should be really stressed that this is a main area for late nightlife in Vancouver and it does get noisy and rowdy as the hours go on to the extent I questioned its safety. The staff were the only redeeming feature of this place, they went to the trouble of trying to make the best of a bad situation and were genuinely helpful people.

"Satisfactory stay "

The hotel is in a slightly run down street and the entrance is quite small and unassuming. The hotel is of average standard, a little worn in places but it is clean. The room was dated but clean. We did have a fab view of the city from the room.
