"Full Review on a Canucks game night"

   21-02-2017
I had seen the review stating the rooms were small and that the front desk people were nice but check in was slow and even that the elevators took a while. That being said, We pulled into the the temp spaces just outside the parking garage lot. There are only 4 spaces and we got the last one. So I went inside to check in and the lobby is full of people. At least 30 rooms waiting to check in. This is at 4:30pm the game doesn't start until 7pm. And I see 3 people manning the front desk, so how long could it take, right.? Try about 45 minutes. (It is not that hard to go through and pre-check in people so that the room keys are ready. You just swipe the card and get signatures right? nope not here) Then the clerk apologizes and says the room is not ready yet. Check in is at 4pm, this is now pushing 5:30pm and check out was at 11am. So the clerk finishes the paperwork except for the key and has me go to park the car. Thankfully there were 6 spaces left in their lot. 3 of those have huge SUVs parked over the line so I go 1 of the last 3 full spaces. Then I go to the elevator to go up to the lobby. Okay full 5 minute wait, could have been worse but really. Get up to the lobby wait maybe 2 minutes and the clerk hands me the card key, again apologizing. The lobby is now about half full. So again to the elevators but different ones. And we wait, and wait and once it came to the floor but was full because people had gotten into the elevator on different floors going DOWN because they were tired of waiting for the UP elevator. So after 10 minutes we finally get an elevator. YEAH up to the room, right? Not a chance the elevator stopped at the maid floor and would not move any further. Even one of the maids tried here key but it would not work. So we said screw it and took the stairs for 4 flights.1 poor lady was on the 10th floor, yeah she had the maid call the front desk from her radio. So we get to our room, and it is small but not hostel small. Queen bed with room on both sides and a desk. No drawers/chest but the closet was okay and surprise there was a mini fridge under the counter! The room was clean so okay lets try to relax for a minute but since it was almost 6pm we headed to the stairs to get to the game. Location is amazing for the hotel 2 blocks from Rogers and less for BC Place. And also just across from the Theater and CBC studios. After the game we tried the elevators again and after a 5 minute wait again just took the stairs. So we get into the room and notice the view because now it is dark and we see nothing but windows. We were on the alley side of the hotel and one of the Sandman towers, the YWCA hostel and another hotel all have windows facing each other. Needless to say we did not use natural lighting for the rest of the trip. If we would have had a street view it would have been spectacular. Bed was very firm, as in motel 6, almost a box spring firm. Could only hear people in the hall from in the bathroom not the bed. So next morning, shower pressure and temp were fine. We finally got to ride the elevator or squeezed in at least. There are 2 elevators for the tower we were in and we only managed to use it one and a half times. We actually checked out earlier than we planned just to go get breakfast and to not have to deal with getting back up to the room. The parking was good until 2pm which would have been nice to know from the website. Cost was under $95 US for the room and $23 CAN for parking. So needless to say it was a bargain for location and cost. If I could request the other tower facing Cambie St or no higher than the 4th floor but only on the street side I might consider coming back because the cost is so low compared to the surrounding hotels. But then I would only plan on using the stairs. But the check in length of time and the elevator waits were worse than Vegas on a major show/fight night. If they fix even 1 of these it might make me want to stay again.

"Convenient Location, Pleasant Staff"

   09-02-2017
We stayed here just one night for a downtown event. The hotel is less than a five minute walk to the stadium, arena, and Queen Elizabeth Theatre, very handy. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. We had a couple of special requests and they were filled quickly and without any fuss. Rooms are typical for this kind of hotel and were very clean.

"Good value and comfortable"

This is the third time I have stayed at the Sandman and this visit was the best I have experienced. Reception area hasn't changed much since my first visit 10 years ago. Guy on reception very friendly and welcoming and checked in to room 624. Lovely spacious room looks newly decorated, well maintained and clean, two double beds, flat screen TV, desk and office chair. Small wardrobe area but ok as only stayed a couple of nights, decent but smallish bathroom, clean though an old shower with unadjustable height setting. Good location just a short walk to Vancouver City Centre station with connections by skytrain to the airport. Easy walking distance to Gastown and Canada Place and the city's main shopping district. Behind the hotel is Robson Street with Tim Hortons and Starbucks for coffee and snacks as well as some convenience stores. Highly recommend eating at Moxie's in the hotel one thing the hotel still has not resolved however is the lifts which are not the most reliable.

"Worst hotel in my life!"

   04-02-2017
This is the worst hotel ever!!! Much worse than any motel you can think of and way more expensive! They gave us a room that has a hook instead of a closet and when we asked why our room was the smallest they said it was fully booked and that tomorrow they would change us to a bigger one (they cost the same). There is no safe in the room. And the worst: the heat is not working...we called and they sent someone with a heater washroom sized (or less) so we give it a go...for 30 minutes while we try to fall asleep freezing and I call again (now the tv remote control isn't working and the room is still freezing) so they say they'll send someone and again he comes with a miniature heater...so we connect both and try to fall asleep when the whole power goes out (turns out both heaters are too much).... so I call again and it takes more than 20 mins for someone to come up (in the meantime my husband goes down and asks to be changed of rooms and is told they're full) so when the handyman finally comes up I'm really upset and yell at him and so he says he'll change our room...now we're moving to another room that surely was available all the time...haven't been there so I can't yet comment on it (however I'm told it's the same shoe size). I hope this is helpful to other people looking for a room in downtown Vancouver...there are better options!

"Small , clean , convenient, good value."

   02-02-2017
I recently spent two nights at this hotel. The room had to be the smallest I have stayed in in quite some time. The room was clean and fairly up to date. Good water pressure in the shower . It is centrally located down town and a good value . Request to be far. From the elevator if you want to sleep. Doors lack soundproofing. I will go again .
