"Sets the standard for all hotels"
The best way to approach the hotel is by water and the V2V ferry, itself a pleasurable travel experience, runs from Vancouver daily. This was a grand building, visited by royalty and the rich and famous, which has been lovingly and beautifully restored to allow guests to step back in time, but with modern conveniences. The staff are unfailingly polite and helpful, right up to the doorman who thanked us for staying at the hotel as we left. Afternoon tea, which is actually served from lunchtime, is a must. It’s known as a speciality of the hotel for very good reason. We had a suite which, whilst spacious, wasn’t laid out to best effect, a problem, I suspect, with having to work with existing spaces, rather than starting from scratch. Having said that, it was superbly decorated and finished and is a small negative on what was a memorable stay. My only regret is that it took so long for us to stay there. A real gem.
"Great Location and a Classy Historic Building"
We flew in by seaplane for 3 nights and found this location perfect for easy access to everything. The concierge was extremely helpful with reservations for restaurants and a recommendation on whale watching. (Went with BC Whale Watching and it was great). We had a lovely lunch on the terrace overlooking the harbor. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant and was quite pleased with the chef’s creations. However, the service was very slow. Slow service again for breakfast. After that we went to the Belville for breakfast where service was fast and the food half the price.
The Empress is the perfect location to explore Victoria. Luxurious, great service, the Empress is within walkable distance to many Victoria attractions. Busses, water taxi and tours are available within steps of the hotel. The spa and pool are lovely. The famous Empress high tea is pricey.....but if elegant tea is your thing, it's worth the price. The Q restaurant was expensive, average service, very average food....
"A special night's accommodation"
From the moment we walked in the door we were treated so well. The staff are exceptional and the interior of this hotel is just gorgeous. The rooms have recently undergone a renovation and ours was very classy. The only criticism I could make is that free wifi is not provided. After checking out, we had a whole day in Victoria before our late afternoon float plane flight back to Vancouver. The hotel were very happy to store our luggage for us, which was most appreciated. It was also a real treat to discover their bee hives, which are lovingly tended. The honey produced here is used in their restaurant. We were made very welcome when we wandered up to the garden and found the beekeeper at work - he was obviously very proud of what he was doing for the environment.
We stayed here at the start of our two week Canadian holiday. The hotel is stunning from the outside and they have done a great job renovating the foyer etc. the rooms are ok, I believe they are quite basic considering the money we were paying. Over A$600 for a pretty small room with one of the smallest bathrooms I have ever seen and not even a bottle of water or anything complimentary. Minibar has been removed and although housekeeping will bring a bottle of water if you ask (this is not advertised anywhere) it’s not chilled and only a tiny 300ml
