Casa Granda

Over Casa Granda

"The roof bar is a great place for a drink ."

We did not stay at the hotel but after roaming the busy , noisy , diesel fumed streets around Parque Cesperdes it was great to get the lift up to the roof bar of the Casa Granda for a cocktail & snack at reasonable prices with suprisingly good service .

"Cafe = great! Tourist desk not so great."

So this isn't going to be a proper review as I was never a guest of this hotel. Instead I stayed at another hotel around the corner (Hotel Imperial e - same company). The imperial lacks WiFi which the Casa Granda does not, hence my multiple visits! I really enjoyed the open air cafe on the terrace. It was very nice to be able to use the WiFi and have a bit more privacy than simply sitting on the square. Since it was in the hotel, people weren't coming up to you. The pineapple drinks were fresh and sweet. I drank a lot of them. And No-jitos too. (Mojito with no alcohol). I ate dinner there a few times too. It was nice to have a simple pizza once in a while after more adventurous foods (I with a tour group and some of our visits included stops in remote locations). And flan. They have flan and I really like flan. The service I got was wonderful and I actually miss seeing the faces of those that helped me. I'd love to be able to just pop in again! I will definitely revisit again if I have the chance! On the other hand the tourist desk is a bit lacking. However I learned from the friendly lady at the front desk that the desk isn't actually staffed by hotel employees. I attempted to go diving one day and the website said that the tour desk at the hotel was also one of their central "dive center" locations that could organize scuba excursions. I tried to get in touch with them various times over the course of 2-3 days and even left my hotel number. I spoke to an intermediary who really had no business contacting me because they had no information to pass on at all. They promised they'd follow up but I never got a call again. So that ended up being very disappointing. (Nothing to do with the hotel directly but still, a service less than satisfactory that is offered by the venue). Anyway, I can't wait to return to Santiago one day. I'd probably try out this hotel for real too!

"Great loacation and lovely roof bar"

We stayed here on 2 separate occasions before and after our trip to Baracoa. The first time we had a room on the 2nd floor and as others have noted the once grand bedroom are now looking tired. The bed was comfortable enough, the bathroom functionaland the water hot. It was, however, extremely noisy as it overlooked the main square so take earplugs! On our return we had a room on the 4th floor which smelt damp and musty and we found the the loo did not work. It was repaired eventually . I did request a change of room but this was not immediately forthcoming; I was told that this would be offered if the repair could not be effected. OK - it was done reasonably promptly but to spend the first hour of our stay wanting a shower and not being able to use the bathroom was not ideal. The public areas are lovely, both the downstairs terrace and the roof top bar are good places to watch the world go by. (tho avoid the international cocktails - the margarita was undrinkable!) and the buffet breakfast was good. Generally the staff were pleasant tho less so at the terrace bar. . Overall this is a good hotel but like many in Cuba in need of serious investment to update the bedrooms and bathrooms.

"Perfect location"

This hotel was clearly grand once but our room was certainly tired. We had to put sticky tape on the light switch to keep the main light on and the curtains were very old and shabby. The a/c was so noisy - at first we thought there were workmen in the next room - that we had to turn it off. One evening there was no hot water in the shower. But the bed linen and pillows were nice and there was good lighting in the bathroom. We were pleased to have CNN but had to pay to use the safe. The breakfast buffet was very good and there's a very nice roof-top terrace with music in the evening and inexpensive drinks (particularly for a hotel). Get there early if you want a table overlooking the square. The location is very central and ideal for sightseeing in the city but be aware that there's loud night-time music which we certainly found disturbing.

"Short stay 2 nights"

Excellant location for this old hotel where the rooms are tired. Rooftop panorama and bar excellant location, breakfast good standard. Internet hotspot on ground bar/restaurant area or in adjacant square. Location justifies the rooms
