Casa Granda

Over Casa Granda

"Awesome Hotel! Amazing views!"

We arrived in Santiago de Cuba on 03/14/17 from the ship Adonia. We had only ONE day in the city. I had read other reviews from World Travelers about sitting on the roof terrace of the hotel that over looked the city. After reading other reviews I knew this was something we had to do! We had a group of ten plus our tour guide Yuri Arcaya Borrego, from Cubaguider.com. Yuri was the best! He helped us with translations. Our group included seven adults and three teenagers. We arrived at the Hotel on foot and walked the stairway to the roof top. Reception at the lobby and front desk was excellent. The kids loved it! The views were amazing! Our staff from the roof top bar that waited on us were GREAT people and fun to be with! They even let us take pics and selfies with them. We had an awesome time and a band had just started to play in the afternoon as we were leaving. This trip to the Hotel is something I would highly recommend for everyone! We did not have time to stay overnight at the Hotel but I feel that we would do so on a return trip. One thing is for sure, we needed more time at the Hotel and seeing more of the historic places in the city. This was our first trip to Cuba and we will be going back for sure! A big thank-you to all of the staff at the Hotel Casa Granda that made us feel welcomed in their country.

"Casa (used to be) Granda"

So here's the thing... To get the very most out of this historic old gem, you need to see everything at the Casa Granda through rose tinted spectacles. I have tried really hard to justify giving this hotel an extra star! But where they shone in a couple of areas, they were really poor in others. Ok let's start with the issues. The bedrooms were really poor - more like 2 star to be honest. But you can see how, once upon a time, they used to be grand. The service was very hit and miss. And many of the resident areas where dirty and unsightly. Reception staff were really unfriendly. A few of the restaurant staff shone at times, but again, overall they only just seemed to care. There was one shining star amount the staff - the gentleman who made my omelettes at breakfast time. He was the only person in 4 days who ever asked me how I was. He was polite, attentive and made great omelettes. The other aspects that shone, were the two main bar areas. The wonderfully historic and atmospheric front terrace. At any time of the day it was a wonderful place to sit and watch the world go by. The roof terrace was also a wonderful spot for sundowners or to escape the intense heat and catch a breeze as you looked out over the best view in town.

"Excellent location - pretty poor rooms"

Cuban hotels are really not the best - you are better to stay in a Casa as the overall quality and value for money is superior. That said it's pretty hit an miss so do some research before booking anything! Casa Granda is in a fabulous location. The staff are pretty surly, and the food and drinks are average but the rooftop bar has a fantastic view and is great for an evening drink. Stick to Rum or beer though as the cocktails are not all that. I preferred the bar downstairs later on as its better for people watching and SDC is great for that! The rooms are poor - we had to ask to be moved as our room smelt of sewage - this they finally did - but it took a bit of persuasion in my terrible Spanish.

"The "real" Cuban hotel"

When you want to judge an hotel, you need always to consider where you are. So, you do not expect the "western standard" in Santiago de Cuba PRO - The location is excellent, just walking distance from almost everywhere, including the Moncada and the harbor - The atmosphere. As I said you can't expect the best comfort, but at least you can feel a bit of the Cuban spirit, that you can't find in a big seaside resort - The terrace is a plus. Nice view of the city and the harbor. The right place for an aperitif CONTRA - Mixed feelings for the room. Spacious, but as expected quite filthy and smelling - The staff is not very friendly, but this is common in big hotels in Cuba - The breakfast is served in anonymous large (6-8 people) tables, so that if you wanted a bit of privacy, there is no way to get it. Quantity of food decent, quality medium-low Overall a typical Cuban hotel, not better or worst that any other "top" hotels in the island. I see that not all the tourists or voyageurs, are considering where you are when you stop in Santiago. For sure far from the Caribbean resorts.

"Hotel Casa Granda - Rooftop Restaurant"

I visited the rooftop restaurant of this hotel this month during a day visit to Santiago de Cuba. My visit did not meet expectations in terms of decor which was more like a cafeteria visit than a rooftop restaurant in say, Venice ... Although the fare was good and plentiful, the service was dour and the first request was for what was the equivalent of a steep cover charge as we were the first to arrive out of a group of 5. The "cover charge" demand was dropped after we placed our orders but the cost was 60 CUC for 5 including gratuities. A bit steep for Cuba. Otherwise, the property is worth a visit, particularly the view from the top. To summarize, the restaurant is a clip joint for tourist bus clients or day trippers from other resorts. Not recommended. Have a drink a the hotel bar at the entrance level of the hotel. Much more interesting.
