"A comfortable time warp"

   30-11-2016
This hotel has a lot going for it, and its inconsistencies can either be considered part of the quirky charms of present-day Cuba or an annoyance; I choose the former! This hotel is well maintained for the most part. Its elevators are somewhat slow and very temperamental - watch out for the "full" light when it illuminates and don't try to squeeze anyone else on! Unfortunately, the stairs are not an option as they are all exterior and the doors to the outside are locked, which is not very comforting when you think about the possibility of a fire. Its staff is helpful and friendly, with the exception of the Daiquiri Bar off the lobby, where they seem quite put out by the thought of having to wait on a guest! There is a large and extensive dinner and breakfast buffet which is well maintained for the most part; however, if you want fresh fruits and veggies you'd better go in the first hour after the buffet opens! Drink options are limited (in terms of wine) but inexpensive, which makes up for it to a certain extent. The live music is nice and not intrusive. The rooms are clean and while not luxurious or updated, they are very serviceable and not uncomfortable. The air conditioning works quite well, especially if you leave one room key in the central wall slot which will allow the AC to continue to run while you're out of the room. It is quiet, with little street noise. There are two lovely adult pools which seemed clean with a smaller pool for the kids, and an ample supply of beach chairs and towels available. There are other restaurant options, both fancier and more casual than the buffet, and there is an on-site currency exchange and several small stores in case you need some toiletries or clothing. The neighborhood is quite a mix, with traffic that makes walking an adventure, but it is worth it to venture out. A monument to Che Guevara is just across the street and makes for some good photo opportunities. This hotel does host large tour groups but for the most part they are handled efficiently and without causing chaos for other guests. While this might be considered a 5-star resort in Cuba, by US standards it is somewhat lower, but it is one of the best hotels we saw during 14 days in Cuba.

"Generally a good choice"

   24-11-2016
The hotel is modern and comfortable with good facilities and a very friendly staff. It is away from the centre of town but this is not a major problem. The bedrooms are large and well-equipped. There were some minor grumbles from members of our group - as was fairly common in Cuba some of the 'hot' food was almost cold, the lifts could be rather chaotic, access to the Internet was expensive, and the temperature of some of the showers was difficult to regulate. In general, however, we all enjoyed our stay here and would not hesitate to return.

"Excellent location"

Clean, good service, exchange service right out the doors. This place is hosts to various tour groups. Large breakfast buffet, a walk to many restaurants, great lounge area. Oh, cocktail hour does not exist at the main first floor lounge. It is at the pool!

"Still Quirky Cuba wrapped in a western style hotel"

   23-11-2016
Sitting in the lobby, enjoying our complementary arrival drinks I felt I could be in any hotel in the world in the 90's, which is kind of disappointing having travelled all the way to Cuba to immerse myself in culture, however, please don't think ill of me, I am not complaining, it's just an observation. The restaurants and pools are great, the roof top bar and terrace is stunning and the show in there is a fantastic delight (if a little slick). The redeeming factors for me were the oddities. 1. I tried to change some £50 notes sterling at reception, they informed me that they couldn't exchange them because they were too old (pre 2010 printing), so I tried my collection of £20 notes, and had the same response, desperate for CUC by now, I used my emergency Euro notes, which they happily exchanged. OK fairly dull story so far. But wait, it does get better. I mentioned this to our guide, saying that I needed to go to the exchange in town as the Hotel reception wouldn't exchange my sterling, she showed me that by the Hotel pool there is a state exchange bureau, they happily exchanged my £50 notes & gave me a better exchange rate, way to go reception, you could have told me eh!. Our second 'Cubanism' was, we reported that water was coming through the ceiling in our bathroom, via the extractor fan, which I didn't think was properly designed for the task. This was making our bathroom floor wet and slippy, so we had to lay our hotel towels on the floor. (I didn't want it to look like we were slobs, so I reported the problem to my friends at reception). When we returned in the evening, the bathroom was spotless with new towels & the addition of a bucket under the extractor fan, pure genius, thinking out of the box & fixing our slippy floor. Thank you Melia Santiago de Cuba for redeeming yourself from homogenised corporate and sterile hotel, to quirky Cuban hotel.

"4 night stay at a Cuba "5 star" hotel"

   22-11-2016
Our group of 25 enjoyed our stay at the Melia. We drove by our bus to different locations in Cuba each day returning here as the other locations were affected by the hurricane. This hotel has excellent, well-trained staff, which certainly equal American fine hotel standards. There are several restaurants including a very good breakfast buffet with a huge assortment of international selections that we enjoyed each morning. Don't miss Jose Rios, the pianist in the lounge in the evenings. He is classically trained at the Tchaikovsky Institute in Moscow and made a rather old piano come to life. Our rooms were comfortable and there were no problems.
