Een bezoekje aan het magnifieke Casa Dupont; men kan er tegenwoordig verrukkelijk dineren of van een drankje en het uitzicht genieten in de bar.

Meliá Las Americas

Uiterst sfeervol resort hotel.

Over Meliá Las Americas

Shows en entertainment. Winkeltjes, 24-uurs roomservice, beautysalon.

"The best we've found in Cuba"

   14-01-2018
Let me begin my review of Melia Las Americas in Varadero Cuba as I do all my reviews of Cuba. Please consider Cuba as you would a single mother raising 3 kids without support from anyone. She does the best she can with what she has and does it with all the love she can offer. Our vacation provider was WestJet Vacations. Our flight was uneventful in both directions. The WestJet Staff in Cuba were well organized with activities, airport transfers, and relevant information necessary to have a worry-free vacation. Resort – We have been to Cuba 8 times in the past few years. And this resort is the first one that my wife has unequivocally stated that she would come back to. It is fresh, modern, well managed and well maintained for a Cuban resort. We have been to other resorts in Varadero, others in Cayo Santa Maria, and some in Cayo Coco, and this was by far the best. Most importantly (to us) is that it is truly adults only. We arrived in the afternoon as our flight was delayed by 2-hours due to inclement weather in Toronto. Our room was ready, as was our son’s. Check-in was standard, forms to fill out with name, address, contact info (likely for marketing purposes I suspect), show your passport, read the rules, sign the form, get a wristband and a property map. We walked to our room (did not use the Bellboy that was offered) and found it by following the signage. Our package included a bungalow at Melia Las Americas. It was a little more expensive but in my opinion worth it for the 10 days we were there. Our original room was modern for Cuba, recently renovated. Tile floor, updated bathroom, separate living room with TV, walk-in type closet, programmable safe, ironing board and iron. Lots of standard clothes hangers for my shirts and my wife’s evening dresses. More hooks and the like to hang towels and bathing suits as necessary. A nice spot to put your suitcases so you’re not tripping over them. The bedroom had a king size bed with a comfortable mattress as well as another TV. The bathroom had a double sink countertop, standard toilet and a walk-in shower with a rain shower head and hand wand. There was a balcony (as we were in a second-level bungalow) that was accessed from either the living room or the bedroom with two chairs and table. It was facing the poolside bar/cantina. We did have some problems in our first room. The AC didn’t function, then the hot water didn’t run hot, the shower did not produce hot water (all the cold water you wanted), and lastly the electricity cut out. After explaining I wanted the less Authentic Cuba experience, they moved us to another bungalow. The second bungalow was AMAZING. It appeared to have been renovated the week before we arrived. The fixtures were fresh, the amenities pristine, everything worked, hot water was hot, AC was cool. Fantastic. Note: If you are unhappy with something, tell them. They want you to enjoy yourself but keep in mind my opening statement about Cuba. The lobby and property are also very modern and fresh. The pools are cleaned daily, there are lots of beach chairs poolside. Some have folding sections to relax your knees, you can ask for a beach mattress to go on top of the beach chair for more comfort, or you can jump into one of the many palapas (covered outdoor mattresses that comfortably hold 2 – 3 people) that are scattered throughout the property. We did not partake in the daily activities or the evening shows. Having been to Cuba as many times as we have, while entertaining we just enjoyed quiet evenings in our own company. The buffet restaurant was adequate. Not the best one we have experienced but suitable. My wife is dairy-free and gluten-free, and this can be a challenge to say the least. Firstly, she brought a loaf of gluten-free bread with her, so she could have a sandwich at breakfast or dinner. The buffet did have alternatives like soy-milk. At the buffet you will find an assortment of foods and you have to treat each offering as an ingredient for a complete meal. For example, I grabbed some steamed cauliflower took it to the pasta bar and had them do some shrimp in garlic oil with some hot peppers, then use the cauliflower as my “pasta” base. At other resorts they seem to rotate meal offerings from one day to the next (which add variety). We found that this was not the case at this resort. They seem to have a strict meal plan and don’t stray from him very far. New Years Eve was a special event with lots of treats, fresh fruits (apples and grapes), lots of special desserts. My only suggestion to them would be to adopt some variety or themes for the daily dinners (fajitas, wings, Mexican, Chinese, etc.). To stress my point, the food was good, it was just the same every day. Service was hit or miss in all fairness. Sometimes the service was so stellar you couldn’t possibly expect more, and other times it was desperately absent. The staff work in shifts. For 6 days they work the breakfast & lunch seating, and then rotate to do the dinner seating in the evening through the night. In the buffet section after a few meals, we settled on Katy who was quiet but attentive to our table and always had a smile on her face. Her counterparts for the opposite seating was Enrique and Dany. All three of them were very good at ensuring our plates were cleared, that our cups were full, and greeted us each day with a smile and warmth that I’ve come to expect from the Cuban people. Service at the poolside bar near our bungalow was not as good, nor was it as good at the pool side restaurant. The lobby bar is fully stocked. Lots of mint for Mojitos, espresso coffees aplenty. In the evening there was table service, but this only seemed to be the case in the evening. It would be great if there was table service throughout the day. Melia Las Americas has money exchange at the front desk, and despite what you might hear on the bus ride to the resort, the exchange is as good as any place. Certainly, more convenient than going to Plaza de Las Americas and waiting in line for 20 – 60 minutes to change money. The resort does offer WiFi (pronounced WeeFee). The access cards are $1.50CUC for 1-hour of service. It is only available in the lobby area and can be very slow or hard to connect depending on the number of people trying to use it. When it works, it’s fine for emails or news. Skype, Google Voice, and other VoIP type services have been blocked, likely to manage available bandwidth. Melia Las Americas is in a great spot of Varadero. It is next to Plaza de Las Americas (about 5-minute walk). It is 30 – 40 minutes from the airport. It is serviced by the hop-on / hop-off bus route which is $5CUC for the day per person, which will take you into the heart of Varadero for more restaurants, the market, and the city itself. Plaza de Las Americas has many shops (Liquor, Tobacco, some bars and restaurants, clothing, and a fully stocked grocery store). All in all, it was the best resort we’ve been to in Cuba in our many many visits. We are very likely to return.

We chose this resort from the reviews, when you only have a couple days to get away you don’t want to make a mistake. On arrival we were offered the junior suite for an extra $20. Turned out to be a great upgrade. Room was clean and while not perfectly maintained it was well worth it. We had our own huge veranda with sun beds, table and chairs. The cleaning staff were pleasant but not very thorough. We had a couple of surprises. “Did you clip your toenails?” “No” “Well what’s that on the floor then? It wasn’t there this morning!” “Not mine!” Yikes! Food was ok... more hit and miss actually. Nothing stellar. The outside BBQ was my least favourite. I learned to stay away from the pasta and that fish is always good and beef is the best. You has to try the Japanese restaurant, it’s fun! The Mediterranean restaurant was nice and relaxing. Drinks were not as liberally served as I would have liked. On the plus side, no one was drunk but I would have loved being served while relaxing on the beach or by the pool but that honestly isn’t really going to happen there. Swim up bar? Not a hope. The entire staff there are very pleasant, great attitudes! Iran was the best - so serious. The busboys were all amazing. Every evening there were living statues with hi class entertainment. The manager and entertainment manager both will visit you each day at dinner, I believe the manager can speak any language fluently. The beach is nice! The best around the area actually. Mosquitoes? If you like them you won’t be disappointed, they visit in the evening and I would guess they might get pretty bad during high season. During our stay we got a couple bites but it wasn’t a big deal. In all the location is perfect, secluded enough to relax outside of town, close enough to Havana and the town to explore easily... Not sure if we’ll be back because there’s so much to see in Cuba but I’m super happy I got a chance to stay there. PS: if you’re wondering whether to stay here or next door at the other Melia, stay here, I visited next door and was so happy I made the right choice.

Worst weather... BEST experience at Melia Las Americas. For anyone who has recently travelled to the Caribbean (Cuba, Dominican Republic, Bahamas and even Florida), you are well aware of the unfortunate weather pattern that affected these places this past week. If not for the Melia L.A. we would have had a miserable stay. To further explain, our holiday got off to a VERY negative start... not because of the weather, but due to the experience we had on our 1st night at ANOTHER resort. It was so dirty and run down that my husband and I contacted our Sunwing rep, paid extra, and upgraded to Melia Las Americas the very next day. The Melia L.A. customer service was impeccable! Both Zahily and Isabel went out of their way to welcome us and make sure we were happy. About the hotel: -It is super clean, and although the rooms are basic, we were very comfortable. -The lobby is very cozy and inviting with nightly quality musicians. -The pools and beach are great, especially the famous Cuban aquamarine ocean . -The buffet, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner had a good selection, especially considering that in Cuba it is often difficult to get certain foods. We thoroughly enjoyed the grilled meats, poultry, fish and shell fish freshly grilled on the spot. The only thing we missed was a better choice of vegetables and fruits. -There are 4 A La Carte restaurants with a good variety of dishes and it is obvious that there was a lot of effort put into every restaurant's decor and ambiance making each one unique... definitely not chintzy! -For you golf lovers, the hotel is a 2 min. walk from the Varadero 18 hole golf course. We've golfed on many islands and we were pleasantly surprised by the condition of the fairways and greens, not to mention some spectacular ocean views on the back 9. One of the reasons we went on holidays, besides the sun and surf was to take advantage of Sunwing' s Hotel/Golf pkg: free green fees >cart extra. The first hotel we chose had this pkg. as well. Unfortunately when we switched to Melia L.A. Sunwing refused to extend the golf pkg. even though Sunwing offered this pkg. with this hotel as well. We were told that it was only included with a 7 night stay! It didn't seem to matter that we had already stayed 1 night at another Sunwing Vacation hotel... we were not impressed. Here's another example of how accommodating Melia L.A. was: After speaking with Melia's golf rep, she contacted her manager and the HOTEL , not Sunwing, honoured the golf package, saving us a ton of money! On a final note, we would especially like to thank Zahily and Isabel for their genuine caring and friendliness. They went out of their way to help us out....when we had issues with our phone charger , Zahily offered hers... several times! When we go back to Cuba, we will definitely book the Adults Only, Melia Las Americas. If our experience was this good with bad weather , we can only imagine how great it would be with a week of warm weather and sunshine. Many thanks, lol Marianne and Michael Love

"Fantastic Vacation!"

My family of four (Son 24- Daughter-20), went to this fabulous resort from Dec 21-28 and couldn't have been more pleased. From check-in to check-out; the excellent service from the maids to the chefs, to the bartenders, to the customer service personnel, to the entertainers, all were friendly and professional. Partially due, I think, to the ever present general manager Bernard Mayer, a gem of man, and an obviously great hotel manager! We opted for an ocean view room, though I think all the rooms seemed to have good views. The beach was great, and large enough so the if you wanted peace and quiet you could have it, or you could stay closer and have more action (pool, volleyball, music, etc) - Having a golf course, and a good one with great staff, was a huge plus for my son and I. When I wanted to take my daughter across the island to Scuba dive in the Bay of Pigs, and had to go on the following day, customer service called and called until they found us on an outfit to take us! The massage beachside that my wife and daughter got was one of the best they've had. And even though Cuba is not renowned for their food, we were quite happy with the selections...My daughter being both gluten and dairy free even met with the chef who made arrangements for her to have gluten free pasta! If you're considering going and have any questions, please feel free to email me at mettlinger@rogers.com - this being one of the few resorts that I and my family would be happy to return to! Thank you Bernard and your entire team!
